EXPERIENCING
DETACHMENT
FROM ALLAH DURING
INTERVALS BETWEEN
THE 5 DAILY PRAYERS
The ‘abd (of Allah) experiences times of heedlessness,
detachment (from Allah), hardening of the heart,
disregarding mistakes, and disposes towards sinning
during the intervals between the ve daily prayers. This
deplorable change takes him away from his Lord and
prevents him from being near to Him and alienates him
from his position as the (true) ‘abd of Allah. Even worse,
he may willingly deliver himself to his enemy (i.e. Satan)
who captures him, puts him in chains and locks him in
the prison of his base-desires, causing him to experience
nothing but anxiety, grief, sorrow, and regret while being
unaware of the reason behind his wretched condition. It

comprehensive act of worship made up of diverse phases
and formats; each phase and format corresponds to the
different actions he committed and conditions he
experienced outside the salah. More so, it is designed so
that the goodness and benet he acquires from each
phase is in a measure proportionate to his needs, as this
act of worship (i.e. salah) is prescribed to demonstrate
his servitude to Allah.

DISCUSSION
ON WUDU
Wudu is the prescribed ritual whereby dirt and lth are
cleansed and removed so Allah’s believing slave may
stand pure in His presence. The effect of wudu that
manifests itself outwardly is the cleansing of the body
and the limbs used in the act of worship (salah). The
inward effect on the other hand, is subtle, as it has to do
with the purication of the heart from its sins through
repentance. The two aspects of wudu are inscribed in the
statement of Allah, Most High: “Indeed, Allah loves those
who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify
themselves.” (Al-Baqarah 2:222).
He links repentance with purity, and the statement of the
Prophet (SAW): “O Allah, make me among those who
turn to You in repentance and make me among those
who are puried.”
Allah prescribed for us to supplicate to be among the
cleansed and among the repentant ones.
Allah therefore, perfected for His believing ‘abd degree
and layers of purity and servitude (to Him); inwardly and
outwardly at every stratum; bearing witness that there is
no ilah worthy of worship except Allah and that
Muhammad is His Messenger puries him from disbelief
and polytheism, turning to Him in repentance puries
him from sins, and using water in wudu puries him from
visible lth.

AWESOME
QURAN FACTS:
PROPHET
MUHAMMAD (SAW)
AT MADINA
1. MIGRATION TO MADINA
The deaths of the Prophet’s wife
Khadija and his uncle in the 10th
year of prophethood encouraged
the enemy to persecute him.
Nevertheless, the Prophet (SAW)
continued to successfully convey
the message of Islam. This
infuriated the Quraysh, for Islam
was now also taking root in
Madina. Determined to crush the
movement at all costs, they nally
resolved to kill the Prophet. But
before that, Allah, having a
d i f f e r e n t p l a n f o r h i m ,
commanded him to leave for
Madina. The Prophet (SAW),
therefore, accompanied by Abu
Bakr, left Makkah for Madina in the
13th year of prophethood.
2. A WARM WELCOME
AT MADINA
As the Prophet and Abu Bakr
approached Madina, the people
gathered, eager to greet them.
Everyone wanted the Prophet to be
his guest. Finally, at Allah’s behest,
he stayed with Abu Ayyub Ansari.
Here, the Prophet spoke not of
revenge, but spreading peace,
love and humanity. Those who
accompanied him, the Muhajir,
were treated as brothers and
sisters by the muslims of Madina,
the Ansar, who even shared their
possessions with them. The
Prophet’s journey from Makkah to
Madina - the Hijrah, or migration -
was the rst real step towards the
worldwide spread of Islam.
3. BATTLES AT MADINA
The Prophet’s (SAW) departure to
Madina made the Quraysh much
angrier. They did not want them to
work in peaceful conditions. They
now saw that the muslims were all
gathering in one place, and
becoming increasingly stronger in
the process, and so they resolved
to wage war and crush them
altogether. Consequently, they
fought several battles with the
muslims during this short period of
time. Most prominent of the battles
of them were Badr, Uhud and the
Trench.

VISION URGENTLY
NEEDS YOU!!!
TO SPONSOR ADVERTISING SPACE
Ever since we candidly let it be known to our readers and
supporters that although demand for our magazine is
increasing, the budget for this Advertiser is very limited.
However, we have been overwhelmed by the generous
and kind contributions made by our sisters and brothers
in Islam over the past 30 years. It is obvious should more
people sponsor advertising space in our monthly
publication, then a larger number of the Vision
Advertiser can be made available to meet the demand.
We, as a children’s home, regret not being able to
express our gratitude to you for your generous support,
separately and individually, as we do not have the full
details of many of our contributors, namely those who
have preferred to remain anonymous, and it would be
impossible for us to cope with the volume of work
involved. It is with this in mind that Vision Child and
Youth Care Center extends our sincere appreciation to
all those who have contributed to making this
publication possible. So, whoever you are and wherever
you may be, we want to thank you for your much needed
support of the past, and trust you will again be as
generous in the future. By now you must have realized
that we cannot do without community support, it sure
means more to our residents than you can ever tell.
Remember, caring for children is everybody’s business.
May Allah reward us all with His mercy at our side. We
extend our warm greetings to all our readers.

HOSTING
PARENTS
REQUIRED
Vision Child and Youth Care Centre is in dire need of suitable hosting parents
to host our young residents over weekends, public holidays, school holidays as
well as over the two Eids. Day hosting will also be appreciated.
Hosting means external life to our residents and would be an advantage as
most of them lack that experience. This would mean finding meaning in life
regardless of their age. Hosting is an opportunity to positively affect the child
by being part of their growth and development. It allows those that are
orphaned and those without any close relatives to have an opportunity to
experience and see how other families function. You are given the opportunity
to make others happy so that you may benefit from the atmosphere of
happiness and joy. We all have a responsibility towards the children in our
communities and this would be your golden opportunity to give back and bring
much joy and meaning to young lives.

THE MOST
IMPORTANT
QUALITY OF
A PERSON
Here we come to the most
important quality or characteristic
of an individual. For many people in
today’s world, the most important
characteristic of a person is the
colour of his skin, whether he is
black, white or brown. For others, it
is his economic, social or political
situation - whether his is rich or
poor, whether he is ruler or ruled,
oppressor or oppressed. For some
people, the most important fact
about a person is his place of birth
and the language he speaks, his
nation or his “tribe”. For others, a
person’s main characteristic is his
social standing - whether he is
regarded as an aristocrat, a
middle-class bourgeois, or a
working class individual. The most
important characteristic of a
person, however, is none of these.
In Islam a person’s language or
colour, has no social, economic, or
political signicance. They are
merely signs of the creative power
of God to enable people to
recognise one another. The most
important characteristic of a person
is whether he is a believer in God or
not. Confronted with the full reality
of existence, a person in complete
k n o w l e d g e a n d a w a r e n e s s
acknowledges his dependence on
the Creator for life and guidance.
Such a person is described as a
believer in God. The Arabic word
for belief is “Imaan”. It literally
means “to know”, “to believe”, “to
be convinced beyond the least
shadow of a doubt”. It does not
mean blind, irrational belief. The
Arabic word for believer is
“Mu’min”. A Mu’min is one who
knows and reposes unshakeable
belief in the unity of God, in His
attributes, in His law and guidance
revealed to the prophets and in the
Divine code of just recompense, of
reward and punishment. Without
Imaan there can be no true and
complete Islam. On the other hand,
a p e r s o n w h o r e f u s e s t o
acknowledge his dependence on
the Creator or indeed the existence
of a Creator is described as a
disbeliever, or a Kaar (concealer).
To disbelieve is to be unnatural and
unreasonable. This leads to the
most important statement in Islam,
the Shahaadah.

TRIBUTE TO THE
LATE IMAM
GOOLAM PARKER
With heavy hearts we share the passing of Imam Goolam
Parkar, whose life illuminated the corridors of Habibia
Sooe Masjid in Rylands Estate, Cape Town. Imam
Goolam was not just a Khalifa of Quran or an Imam but
he was a beacon of light guiding the community through
both spiritual and worldly challenges.
In his tenure at Habibia Sooe Masjid, Imam Goolam
has embodied the essence of compassion, wisdom, and
unwavering faith. His dedication to serving the
community Muslim and Non- Muslim knew no bounds.
Whether it was leading prayers, imparting spiritual
guidance, or extending a helping hand to those in need,
Imam Goolam's presence was synonymous with solace
and support.
Beyond the walls of the masjid, Imam Goolam's impact
rippled throughout the community. He was a pillar of
strength, offering counsel and comfort to all who sought
his wisdom. His seless acts of kindness touched
countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of
those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Imam Goolam's legacy is not measured solely by the
years he spent amongst us but by the lives he touched
and the hearts he uplifted. Imam Goolam is the son of
the late Imam Baboo (RA) whose maqam neighbours the
Mazaar of Hazrat Moulana Abdul Latief Qazi Siddiqui
(RA). Imam Goolam leaves us with the prophetic
teachings of love, tolerance, and service to others.
May Allah grant Imam Goolam Parkar Jannatul Firdous

At Vision We Have Heart, Hope And Happiness
ALLAH HEARS THE
ONE WHO PRAISES HIM
Keeping this in perspective it is evident that it is actually
He who praises Himself on the tongue of His slaves,
because when a person praises Him it is only due to His
permission that such praise is uttered by their tongues,
and is established in their heart through his permission.
Truly, to Him is all the praise and to Him belongs
everything; in His Hand lies all goodness; He is the
absolute controller of everything, all that is apparent or
hidden.
This is only a brief glimpse of the countless aspects of
servitude to Allah included in this statement al-hamd, it
is only a drop of water out of the ocean of the knowledge
of what servitude to Allah comprises and entails.
From among the implications of being a true ‘abd to
Allah is to realise that the act of praising Him for a bounty
that He bestowed upon you is itself worthy of praising
Him again for it (i.e. praising Him) necessitates praising
Him (again) for facilitating His praise on the tongue of his
‘abd perpetually. In reality, if a person were to devote
every single one of his breaths toward praising his Lord
for even a single bounty of His numerous blessings that
He bestowed upon him, it would not be enough - this is
because no one is capable of praising Him enough. And
even if he does not praise Him for any of His graces upon
him, he should praise Him for preventing harm from him
(at least). Furthermore, he should praise Him for guiding
him to praise Him.

Al-Awza’i said: I heard someone say: “All praise is due to
Allah; if not for a grace He bestowed, it is for a harm He
prevented.”
Another aspect of servitude to Allah in “al-hamd” is that
it connotes an acknowledgement that were it not for
Allah’s guidance that inspired and enabled the ‘abd of
Allah to praise Him, he would be incapable of praising
Him. He is therefore praised for it because He inspired
his tongue and heart to praise Him; indeed no one would
be guided if Allah did not permit it.
From the other aspects of servitude to Allah found in “alhamd”
is that it encompasses even the minutiae of the
circumstances and state of affairs of the ‘abd (of Allah);
the hidden and the known, the loved and the despised. It
even covers the details of the circumstances and
conditions of mankind in its entirety; the righteous and
the evil ones, the dignied ones and the abased ones. In
reality He is to be praised for all of that, even if His slaves
are unable to comprehend the wisdom behind it or
realise the magnitude of praise He deserves for all of
that. To praise Allah is a manifestation of guidance that
Allah inspires in His slaves; some indulge in praising Him
abundantly whereas there are others whose share is
minimal, dependent on the level of knowledge one has
about his Lord. The Prophet (SAW) said, “And then He will
inspire me to praise Him with such praises as I do not
know (now), I will praise Him with those praises and will
fall down, prostrating before Him.”

1. To gaze or peep at strangers of
the opposite sex.
2. To gaze at beardless boys.
3. To peep into another’s house.
4. To climb unnecessarily onto
high places like the roof of
one’s house as this would
inconvenience the womenfolk
of the neighbourhood over
the question and violation of
Purdah. However, when
there’s genuine need to
ascend heights, then some
children should be sent
around to alert all the
neighbours.
5. For the male relatives of the
bridegroom to view the bride
if they are not her mahram.
The Islamic law prohibiting a
male stranger from looking at
females, also applies to the
bridegroom’s relatives for
whom it would be sinful to see
the new bride if they are not
her mahram.

THE DESIRE FOR
NAME OR FAME
When a person desires name, fame and exaltation. for
himself, he is sure to be Jealous and envious of the
popularity and praise of others and is pleased to hear ill
and disgrace of others. This is a major sin to wish ill for
others.
There is another evil in it that offer popularity or fame
and is gained by unfair and dishonest means i.e. one
spends extravagantly in marriages and other ceremonies
just for the sake of name. Money is also collected by
unfair means, such as, bribe, smuggling etc or by loan on
interest. The worldly loss of this evil is that ‘such persons
makes many enemies who are Jealous and even remain
in search of an opportunity to defame and humiliate him.
A remedy to get rid of this evil is to realise and believe
that the praised and those who praise shall, not live in
this world for ever. All have to die and after sometime no
one will remember either of them. Then why should one
desire a baseless and temporary thing. It is sheer
foolishness.
Another remedy is that one should not act against
Shariat though he may be humiliated in the public-eye
due to that.

HAJJ - THE GREATEST
GATHERING OF
MANKIND
Hajj is the pilgrimage to the “House of God” in Makkah which
is compulsory on every adult muslim in any part of the world
who has means to undertake the journey. Hajj is the fth pillar
of Islam and brings together yearly what may justly be
described as the greatest gathering of mankind.
Hajj is, above all, a journey of individual self-renewal inspired
by piety and devotion to God.
In this quest, the individual is strengthened by the knowledge
that thousands of human beings from all over the world,
regardless of their worldly status, language or race, are in
pursuit of the same goal - the pleasure of their Creator. Many
of the rites of the Hajj go back to the Prophet Ibrahim
(Abraham) and there is a sense of history, of going along the
same straight way that has been the way of the prophets of
God and those who followed them. There is also a natural
feeling of cosmic identity on the part of the pilgrim as he goes
anti-clockwise around the cube-like structure of the Ka’bah
clothed in the simple garments of the state of Ihraam, or as he
stands soul-shaken on the plain of Arafat from noon till the sun
sinks below the horizon. Some of the powerful emotions
experienced during this great act of worship is described in the
account below:
Michel Jansen (USA) - “I have deep roots in America. Some of
my father’s forbears migrated to the Virginia Colony is 1609,

and on my mother’s side are ancestors who fought with
Washington and Lincoln, and a great grandfather who
was a Pony Express rider. Until I was sixteen, I myself had
had an upbringing generally regarded as typically
American, Midwestern, middle class and Protestant. I
grew up in Bay City, Michigan, belonged to the Episcopal
Church, went to Sunday School and sang in the church
choir. At sixteen however, I discovered the Qur’an. These
words (of the rst chapter), simple, and direct, so
impressed me that I immediately set out to memorize
them. Indeed they drew me into Islam, an example
perhaps of Prophet Muhammad’s assertion that
everyone is born a Muslim and made a Jew or a Christian
by his parents.
From that time forward I charted my life in the direction
of Mecca... Before I embarked on the Pilgrimage, its
rituals seemed to me just so many curious exercises. But
as I participated in the event of the Pilgrimage, the
meaning of these rites unfolded, my understanding of
Islam was deepened and I learned more fully what it
meant to be a muslim. Indeed, this is why God had
commanded Muhammad to issue the call for the
pilgrimage: “That they (the pilgrims) may witness things
that are of benet to them...” (The Qur’an, 22:28)
(For example, towards the end of the Hajj when the time
of making the Sacrice came), I began to feel uneasy.
Since I have not completely outgrown the tenderheartedness
I had known as a child, I had balked at the
idea of the Sacrice long before being confronted with it
and now the time had come to do it. What was I to do? As
a girl I had cared for lost dogs or stray cats, adopting any
edgling that had fallen from its nest, splinting a bird’s
broken leg with matchstick and feeding injured
butteries on sugar syrup. But a companion had been
adamant. “You must do the sacrice.”
Back at our building in Mina I turned to the Qur’an. I
found that the Sacrice has many meanings: it
commemorates Abraham’s offering of his son’s life and
God’s rejection of this sacrice in exhchange for
Abraham’s submission to God’s will; it marks the end of
idolatry among Arabs; it is an offering of thanksgiving to
the God of Creation Who has been so benevolent to
mankind; and it teaches the well-to-do to share their
blessings to “eat thereof (the Sacrice) and feed the
beggar and the suppliant”. (22:36)
As I pondered what I had read, a great weight was lifted
from my conscience. I suddenly saw that the Sacrice
upholds the sacredness of life, that it, in fact, constitutes
a pledge by the pilgrim that he will slay for sustenance
only. And where I had felt reluctance before, I now felt
eagerness to full all the requirements of my pilgrimage.

ESSENTIALS OF
EFFECTIVE MEETINGS
PURPOSE - There should be a direct
focus on the purpose of the meeting.
A written agenda must be passed out
ahead of time. There should always
be a period at the end for open
discussion. Questions or arguments
that are not relevant to the item under
discussion can be postponed to this
period.
MEETING ENVIRONMENT - Physical
arrangement of the room is critical to
the meeting’s success. As for size, the
r o o m s h o u l d c o m f o r t a b l y
accomodate the anticipated number
of people. It should be neither too
large or too small, although it is
prudent for motivational meetings to
use a slightly smaller room since
physical closeness will help generate
a feeling of greater solidarity among
the participants. The temperature
should be comfortable and the room
well lit, especially if decision making
is expected. Seating arrangements
are important. A speaker in front of
rows of people tends to create a
psychological barrier between
himself and the audience. We should
avoid this when possible since it
inhibits participation. The room
should be free of distractions such as
excessive noise or inappropriate
decorations.
Even if we don’t know how many will
come, our knowledge and experience
should help us choose the size that
may be the most proper. Select the
best from the classic seating
arrangements: Theater Style,
Classroom Style, Conference Style,
Banquet Style. Before the meeting,
check the acoustics, lighting and
temperature control of the room so as
to keep people comfortable. Plan on
making more space in a crowded
meeting room. Get things in writing
from the facility manager.
TIME - It is very important to start on
time, to get to the point of the
meeting, and to end it on time; this
adds an organized appearance to a
meeting, leaves a good impression
on the participants, and helps get
work done in an orderly and efcient
manner. It is harmful to drag the
meeting on by allowing discussions to
go off on tangents. Socialising can
occur after the meeting.
CHAIRMAN - The authority of the
chairman must be well-established if
he is to run the meeting effectively.
When introducing him, we must stress
the chairman’s credentials and
qualications to chair the meeting.
This promotes an acceptance of his
a u t h o r i t y. T h e c h a i r m a n ’ s
appearance and manner of speaking
must project him well. He should be
neutral when controversial points are
discussed. He should keep the
thinking of the group focussed on the
agenda item. He should not ask :
“Well, what do you think we should
do?” Instead, he should summarise
opportunities and alternatives as
fairly as possible.
PARTICIPATION - Participation is of
the utmost importance. If one person
does all the talking, others are turned
off and the meeting becomes dull for
them. We can plan participation
ahead of time by asking different
people to present various items on
the agenda. Such involvement helps
build and maintain an active and
interested group. When we make the
participants feel they are part of the
focus of the meeting, we enhance
their motivation to contribute and
accept assignments for work.
To get shy participants to open up, we
can use any number of “ice breakers”
that will get the meeting off to a
friendly start. To keep it that way, we
should make attractive and legible
name tags available, and encourage
the participants to wear them.

HOW TO SHARE QUR’BAAN MEAT
It is better to distribute the meat equally among three
groups:
1. One part for your household use (drying the meat for
keeping biltong is allowed)
2. One part as a gift for relatives, neighbours and friends
3. One part for the needy and poor
Offal and Hide - The hide of the Qur’baan could also be
sold and the money distributed, but it need not be sold if
one desires it for personal use. Offal and the hide, if not
used, should be given in charity for the needy, not thrown
away or buried. As related by his cousin Ibn-Abbas, the Holy
Prophet did not allow burying even a dead animal’s hide
when he saw the servant of Maymoonah burying a sheep.
He told her: “Why don’t you skin it and use it (the skin).”
When the servant replied that the sheep had died, the
Prophet (SAW) said: “The eating of it (the esh) is
forbidden,” (meaning not its by-products).
Bukhari records that the Holy Prophet (SAW) appointed Ali
to supervise the Qur’baan, who said: “He ordered me to
distribute the meat, then he ordered me and I distributed
their covering and their skins.”
It is not allowed to give part of the Qur’baan meat, offal or
hide as payment for the butcher.
Innovation such as burying offal, hide or de-boned carcass
are un-Islamic acts and against the Holy Prophet’s orders.
(The same qualication of animals and distribution of
shares as in Qur’baan apply to Aqueeqah.)
On Behalf Of Others - It is permissible to offer sacrice on
behalf of one’s deceased parents, relatives, friends and
persons whom we hold in esteem.
The spirit of Qur’baan covers many things. Those who
cannot afford to sacrice animals could prove their love and
sincerity to Almighty Allah in other ways: sacricing our
base desires, which is the ‘animal in man’.
The object of Qur’baan is that its meat should be shared by
one’s family, friends and the needy. Therefore, people on
Pilgrimage may authorise their families to perform the
ritual of Qur’baan on their behalf in their hometowns.
Sacricing merely for the ritual of it does not serve the true
object of Qur’baan.
Modern conditions and accommodation restrictions may
make it difcult to slay animals in one’s locality. However, if
proper arrangements are made with the authorities, this
can be overcome. Qur’baan could be arranged at special
sites at the Abattoirs. Contact your nearest Imaam for
guidance
Celebrating Eid-ul-Adha - “... and celebrate the name of
Allah, during the days appointed, over the cattle which He
has provided for them (for sacrice): then eat ye thereof
and feed those that are distressed, needy.” (Surah Al-Haj,
Verse 28)

THE SECRET &
ESSENCE OF SALAH
The secret and essence of salah lies
in the inclination of the heart
towards Allah alone and focusing
attention on Him while praying.
Consider the case of a person
whose heart is engaged in one’s
own thoughts and worldly affairs;
he is like a person who visits the
King intending to apologise for his
own mistakes and shortcomings,
beseeching rain from the clouds of
His Generosity and Mercy to
nourish his heart enough so it can
be at His service. However as soon
as he arrives at His doorstep and is
one the verge of calling upon Him,
he turns away from the King and
instead starts to busy himself with
things that are most disliked and
disparaged by the King. Even as his
heart is inclined toward trivial
matters, he still sends forth his
servants (i.e. limbs) to serve Him on
his behalf and to excuse and
compensate for the absence of his
heart. But despite that, the
Generosity and Benevolence of the
King refuses to dismiss the servants
of his slaves without granting their
master (i.e. slave of Allah) a portion
of His Mercy. But there is a big
difference between the ones who
win and earns the trophy and those
given a consolation prize out of
Compassion and Mercy. Allah said:
“And for all there will be ranks from
what they do, that He may pay them
for their deeds! And they will not be
wronged.” (Al-Ahqaf 46:19). Allah
created mankind solely to worship
Him, and He created everything
else to be at mankind’s service. It is
related in a hadith qudsi that Allah
said: “O son of Adam, I created you
to worship Me and created
everything else for you. So, by My
rights upon you, do not indulge in
matters other than what I created
you for.” In another narration: “O
son of Adam, I created you to
worship Me, so do not play (i.e. do
not be involved in idle pleasures); I
guaranteed your provision in this
life so do not tire yourself (i.e. seek
your provision but do not make it a
concern because provisions are
already decreed). O son of Adam,
whenever you seek Me, you shall
nd Me. And, whenever you nd
Me, you shall nd everything. But, if
you were to lose Me, you would lose
everything. Verily, I ought to be
most beloved One to your heart.”
This is why Allah, Most High, made
the salah the means through which
people can be near Him, invoke
Him, earn His love and enjoy His
Company.

UNIQUE METHOD OF
REFRAINING FROM
BACKBITING
Whenever we want to speak of
another person, it’s best to envision
that he is present, so that we avoid
saying things that would hurt him.
Hence, Sayyidina Abu Talib Makki
(RA) has stated, “A pious person has
stated that whenever someone was
mentioned before me, I assumed
that the person was sitting right in
front of me & I only said the things
about him that he would like.”
(Qut-tul Qulub, vol. 1, pp. 349).
S i m i l a r l y , a n o t h e r p i o u s
predecessor said, “When someone
is mentioned before me, I picture
him mentally and I only say those
things about him, that I would like
to be said about me.” (Qut-ul-
Qulub, vol. 1, pp. 349)

THE MANNER OF
EATING OF HUZOOR
AQDAS (SAW)
ADORN YOUR EID WITH TAKBIR
Before eating Huzoor (SAW) would
wash his hands. he would eat with his
right hand and from the food directly
in front of him.
Huzoor (SAW) would never lean
against anything whilst eating.
He would eat in different postures;
sometimes he would sit in a kneeling
position, on both his feet, with the
upper part (instep) of his feet on the
oor (like in tashahhud). Sometimes
he would sit like this, but with one foot
raised, with the knee touching the
chest. Sometimes he would squat on
his heels, with his knees and feet
together, and the heels and bottom of
the feet (soles) lying at on the oor.
This manner was the posture in which
Huzoor (SAW) would sit most often.
Huzoor (SAW) did not eat on a table
or whilst sitting on a chair. He used to
spread a dastarkhan (a sheet of
leather or cloth) on the oor and have
his meals on this.
Usually Huzoor (SAW) would eat with
three ngers - the thumb, shahadat
(index) nger and the middle nger. If
the food was thin, then he would use
the next (ring) nger as well.
After Huzoor (SAW) nished eating,
he would put his ngers to his mouth
and lick them clean. He would start
with the middle nger and nish with
the thumb.
If the food was arranged in a manner,
that it covered the centre of the dish,
then Huzoor (SAW) would not start
eating (or dish) from the centre, but
from the part in front of him and from
the bottom, and Huzoor (SAW) said
that the Barkat (blessings) of the food
descends in the centre.
Huzoor (SAW) did not like to have a
large amount of small dishes, such as
the excessive condiments served by
the rich.
Huzoor (SAW) used to especially like
halwa (sweetmeats), honey, vinegar,
dates, sweet melon, cucumber and
marrow.
Huzoor (SAW) used to especially like
meat of the shoulder , neck and loin
of the animal.
Sometimes Huzoor (SAW) would eat
in pairs; sweet melon and dates
together, sometimes cucumber and
dates, or roti and dates, or sesame
seeds and dates.
If Huzoor (SAW) did not like some type
of food, he would never say anything
bad about it.

When you start to learn, you
realise how little you know, and
when you realise how little you
know, the more you want to learn
to know.
You can break someone’s bones,
but soon it will start to heal. But if
you break someone’s heart, there
will always be sorrow and sadness
he’ll feel.
Do not be discouraged if your
fortunes are small and few,
remember that the mighty oak tree
was once a nut like you.
Do not be covetous of others’
possessions, afuence and wealth,
rather pray and thank the Almighty
for the good food you enjoy, but
more so, good health.
One noble thing which all of
humanity must learn, is to be kind
to your neighbours and friends;
expecting nothing in return.
Travelling by bus, seeing an old
lady standing. Kindly get up and
offer her your seat.
Maybe one day you’ll nd that
same lady greeting you.
Smilingly coming down the street.
Now that you have acquired
fortunes and fame,
While not so long ago you had
little, feeling sad and ashamed.
Now you are haughty and proud,
but remember the Almighty in the
wink of an eye,
Remove your fortunes, and no one
else but yourself to be blamed.

MAAF, A BIG WORD
TO USE, A SMALL
WORD TO SPELL
I have been a male resident in the area of Penlyn Estate
for the past ve years. I recently had my 24 year old
cousin from Worcester over for the weekend. Whilst
watching our favourite TV show in the lounge area, two
Vision residents knocked on the door, with a school
collecting list. For the life of me, I don’t know what had
gotten into me, but I treated them to those immortal
South African words. The two children were so surprised
with my ugly behaviour and immediately left.
After their departure my cousin had no hesitation in
questioning my ugly behaviour towards the children. He
suggested I visit the Vision Children’s home and
apologise. I was in the school by my cousin and was
severely reprimanded by my cousin and wife. In that, I
saw the light. It was agreed that I write a note to the
Vision residents, and that is what I did.
From the bottom of my heart, to the two girls of Vision,
please accept my sincere maaf. I recently had emerged
from a prolonged battle with clinical depression. I was in
debt. My wife had just given birth to our rst child, and I
am unemployed, having just been retrenched after
serving the company for six years.
With all that being said, I beg you to accept my maaf, as
this caused me some sleepless nights. Once again,
please accept my maaf.

Do Not Spread False Rumours About Children’s Homes
HAJJ BEFORE HAJJ
THE ZAMZAM WELL
Beer-Zamzam is the well of Zamzam from where the
holiest water on Earth is owing. This well existed since
the time of Sayidatinaa Haajar (RA) when she placed her
infant baby there and went to look for water while
running from between the hill of Safwa and the hill of
Marwah. When she nished seven times of running she
heard a voice and went to her baby and saw that Jibreel
was digging with his wing and water started owing from
this place. She was scared that the water will simply
disappear into the hot and dry sand of the desert thus she
surrounded it with a barrier of sand. The Prophet (SAW)
said: If she did not try with her hands to preserve it, the
water of Zamzam would have owed like a fountain. It
has also been said that the water got its name Zamzam
from the sound it made when it came gushing out of the
earth. Others say that it got its name because Haajar
when she saw the water gushing from the well, she said:
“Zum yaa maa, zum yaa maa. Accumulate and remain
together o water” because she feared that the will simply
disappear. Zamzam also has other names such as
Shab’baa’ah, Mur ’wiy ’yah, Naa’ah, Aayah,
Maymoonah, Bar’rah, Kaayah, Mu’theebah, Shifaa’u,
Suk’min and Haz’matu Jib’reel. The well of Zamzam was
for about 500 years closed, a person by the name of Am’r
Ib’n Al-Haarith buried therein two golden gazelles and
seven golden swords. As the time went by, no one knew
where the well of Zamzam was until Abdul-Mut’talib, the
grandfather of the Prophet (SAW) discovered it. Today
the people consume about 10,000 cubic meters of
Zamzam daily and about 765 cubic meters are pumped
per hour out of the well. There are taps outside the
Haram from where people can get their Zamzam water.
Inside the Haram, cold Zamzam water can be found in
large plastic containers and there is also Zamzam water
at its normal temperature at different parts of the Haram.
Plastic glasses are used but once and are also supplied at
all Zamzam depots.

EMPOWERING CAREGIVERS:
YOUTH DAY INITIATIVE AT VISION
CHILD AND YOUTH CARE CENTRE
Youth Day at Vision Child and Youth Care Centre isn't just
about celebrating the resilience of young people; it's also
about empowering those caring for them. A recent
workshop held at Kirstenbosch Gardens, hosted by Light
from Africa, focused on a crucial aspect of caregiving:
the wellbeing of caregivers themselves. Designed
specically for carers working with children, this
workshop aimed to address the overlooked issue of
emotional burnout and secondary trauma. Surrounded
by the beauty of nature, attendees learned valuable
strategies for self-care and stress management. The
workshop emphasized the importance of caregivers
prioritizing their own wellbeing, recognizing that they
cannot effectively support others without supporting
themselves. This initiative perfectly aligns with the Youth
Day ethos of ensuring that carers' glasses are never
empty, enabling them to continue pouring into the lives
of the children they serve. Vision Child and Youth Care
Centre is not only investing in the wellbeing of its staff,
but also enhancing the quality of care provided to the
children and youth in its care. As we reect on the
signicance of Youth Day, let us not forget the vital role
that caregivers play in shaping the lives of young people.
Through initiatives like the workshop hosted at
Kirstenbosch Gardens, Vision Child and Youth Care
Centre continues to demonstrate its unwavering
commitment to the holistic wellbeing of all those under
its care.

MY SHOCKING
EXPERIENCE
I am a 14 year old grade 9 learner at a popular high
school in the northern suburbs. I was informed that this
school is over 35 years old, and has produced top quality
learners over the years.
I hereby wish to inform of my shocking experience to as
many young learners as possible. I honestly do not know
in what direction my young life will go. Please rest
assured that it is a school I do not want to be at. My heart
is saddened by the fact that the school staff are unable to
control our learners. The respect has been thrown out
the window. The amount of dagga smoking is so
frightening, the smell is prevalent everywhere.
I was shocked to see a grade 10 learner approach our
maths teacher for a lighter. He refused to oblige and the
student hit him over the head with a broomstick after
chasing him down the staircase. Later, 3 students
punctured 3 of his car’s tires. The teacher was so
traumatized that he took off from school for a week.
Then there are the teenage pregnancies. I counted the
number of pregnant girls and I hope I counted correctly,
but seven girls are now pregnant. They were boasting
about their pregnancies. It will be of no surprise should
one of these girls (future mothers) pop at school.
It is my wish to move to another school next year, God
willing, but I have this fear of what my condition will be if
the same thing will occur at my new school. I came from a
traumatised situation and I am being traumatised even
further. Please have mercy on me.

MAY ALLAH GIVE VICTORY TO ALL
THE MUJAHIDEEN AROUND THE WORLD
FREEDOM
FROM HUNGER
It is scandalous that millions of
people should live in abject
poverty, that millions should starve
and die in a world where there’s no
s h o r t a g e o f f o o d . F o o d i s
stockpiled, dumped and wasted in
huge quantities in some parts of
the world to maintain prots and
price levels while babies die on
their mother’s breasts too dry to
provide life-giving sustenance.
“Spread peace and distribute
food” was the rst instruction of the
noble Prophet (SAW) on reaching
Madina after the historic Hijrah
journey. Throughout his career he
sought to ensure that those in need
had sustenance even though he
and his family often had to go
hungry. He constantly emphasised
the link between belief and caring
for people by such statements as:
“He is not a true believer who eats
his ll while his neighbour goes
hungry.” Cutting off supplies of
food is not allowed in order to
bring people into submission.
During the time of the Prophet
(SAW), a new and ardent muslim,
Thumaamah ibn Uthaal, vowed
that “no grain of wheat or any
produce” should reach the
Quraysh in Makkah “until they
follow Muhammad.” The boycott
was stringently applied by his
people. Prices of food rose in
Makkah. Hunger began to bite and
there was even fear of death
among the Quraysh. When this
was brought to the attention of the
Prophet, he immediately instructed
Thumaamah to lift the boycott and
r e s u m e s u p p l i e s . To a v o i d
dependency and starvation,
societies should strive to be
independent in food production as
a primary goal. The practice of
giving over land almost exclusively
to the production of cash crops like
sugar cane, cotton and worst of all,
tobacco, for the main benet of
foreign multinational companies
should be abandoned. The
Prophets encouraged agricultural
production and linked it with
rewards in the Hereafter. Anyone
who plants a tree or sows a crop for
people, animals and birds to eat of
its produce merits reward,
according to the noble Prophet.
The contributions, however small,
of individuals is important.
Compassion must be translated
into practical help.

MUBARAK FOR EID-UL-ADHA
WHAT IS QUR’BAAN?
The practice of sacricing edible animals in the name of
Allah & distributing their meat among the needy, was
started by Prophet Ibraheem (known among nonmuslims
as Prophet Abraham). Prophet Ibraheem
founded the Ka’baah at Makkah & dedicated it as a
House of Worship for Allah. He asked his people to give
up worshipping idols, guiding them in the Belief of
Allah’s Oneness. He suffered a lot of hardship for the
sake of his Beliefs, but continued preaching the Truth.
Almighty Allah refers to him in the Holy Quran as
“Khaleel”, meaning “Friend”. He delivered Allah’s
Message many centuries before Prophet Moses, Prophet
Jesus & Prophet Muhammad (SAW).
THE TEST - Once Prophet Ibraheem dreamt that
Almighty Allah wanted him to sacrice his only beloved
son Ismaeel. He could not refuse the Call of The Lord, no
matter how dear the sacrice. He told his son about it.
The obedient young boy offered to fulll his father’s
dream. Allah was only testing the sincerity of His friend,
& when the friend passed the test by his willingness to
sacrice his son, Allah commanded him to slay a sheep,
instead. Thus, muslims mark this occasion on the 10th of
Thil-Haj by offering Qur’baan - sacrice - on the day of
Eidul-Adha - & celebrate the annual Pilgrimage at
Makkah.
PAGAN PRACTICE - Before the advent of our Prophet,
the ritual sacrice was abused. Animals were sacriced
in the name of idols & other mortals. Islam prohibited this
and commanded all sacrices only for the sake of Allah,
and its meat to be shared with the needy. The gesture of
sacrice is symbolic as the Holy Quran describes in Surah
Haj, verse 37: “...It is not their meat nor their blood that
reaches Allah. It is your Piety that reaches Him...”
The Holy Prophet (SAW) has ordered us to offer Qurbaan
- to sacrice animals - for the sake of Allah every year, if
we can afford it.
WHO MUST OFFER QUR’BAAN? - Every male or
female who has the means.
WHICH ANIMAL? - A sheep at least six months old, or a
goat at least a year old , covers one person. An ox, cow,
buffalo or camel can cover up to seven people, provided
each bear the cost equally, and its distribution is shared
fairly and equally. An ox, buffalo or a cow should be at
least two years old, and a camel ve years and over.
ANIMALS NOT ALLOWED - Physically defective
animals - blind, semi-blind, cock-eyed, disease-ridden,
cripple, extremely lean, very old or weak or those whose
tail, horns, or ears have half or more parts missing - are
not allowed for Qur’baan.
ALLOWED - An animal “born” without a horn, or a sheep
or goat that is castigated or if half of its teeth are missing,
is allowed.
SPECIFIED TIME LIMIT - The time of slaying starts from
the morning of 10th Thil-Haj after the Eid prayer, until
the last day of Ay-yaame-tashreeq up to the time the As’r
prayers end (The period of Ay-yaame-tashreeq is from
the 10th of Thil-Haj, until the 12th of Thil-Haj according
to Hanafee, and until the 13th of Thil-Haj according to
Sha’fa’ie).
SLAYING - People living in areas where the
Congregational Prayer of Eid is held should slay the
animal after Eid Prayers. Those not living in such places
should slay any time within the “specied” period. It is
better if the person offering the sacrice himself slays the
animal, though it’s not a must. With a “Joint-sacrice”,
the slayer should mention the names of the others in his
Niyyah.
