Dear Colleagues,
It is very obvious that the Turkish metal casting industry has made significant
progress in recent years and has a great potential. Although our final
figures for 2023 have not yet been finalised, while the production of 3.1 million
tonnes we achieved in 2022 and the production value of this production
of 8.5 billion Euros and export figures of 6.5 billion Euros are records for
our industry, we can say that we will maintain our position with the figures
of 2023 and that our industry will continue to grow in the medium and long
term. We provide approximately 22 % of the total 14.5 million tonnes casting
production in Europe. These figures reveal the high competitiveness and
quality of the Turkish metal casting industry in the world market.
In the last few years, our foundries have been making significant investments
to meet the demand for castings, especially from abroad, and new,
higher quality criterias. The use of new technology, high quality production
capabilities and compliance with international standards by our foundries,
which have rapidly adapted to the emerging conjuncture, has made our
country a competitive power in the field of castings.
Again, the high rate of export of our production and the levels reached by
our production capacity are of great importance in the future of our foundry
industry. When we look at the last five months of 2023 and 2024, we see
that our foundries have further diversified their export activities to foreign
markets. The product quality of our metal casting industry has also made
our country a preferred destination for international customers.
We believe that the Turkish foundry industry has the potential to grow in
2024 as it did in the previous period. As Turkish Foundry Association, we
will continue to endeavour to ensure the sustainable development of our
industry by making the best use of this potential.

As TÜDÖKSAD, we contribute to the promotion and thus the growth of the
Turkish Metal Casting Industry by taking part in or supporting organisations
related to the sector in the local and global arenas. Trade fair organisations
are also an important tool of this mission. In 2024, we will gather at the
internationally organised Ankiros-Turkcast fairs, which will bring together
the entire metallurgical sector. We are happy to come together again at
the CastForge fair, the first of which was held in 2018 and which has made
significant progress in its third organisation, in which TÜDÖKSAD also took
part. It makes us happy that our members also take a strong place in this
fair, where our country has an important participation.
TÜDÖKSAD, which has the mission of promoting and representing our
members and our industry in national and international markets, will continue
this mission at CastForge. I wish a successful fair to all our members
and our industry who will attend and visit the fair.

Turkey's Metal Casting Production
Exceeded 3 Million Tons in 2022
Turkish metal casting industry produces a wide range of parts for dozens of sectors,
from construction to automotive, from mining to aerospace, from parts as light as 1 gram
to parts as heavy as 300 tons.
The sector has recently achieved
record levels of production and exports,
taking advantage of opportunities
such as increased demand in
the European market and declining
production in competitor countries.
In 2021, total production increased
by 36.5% to 2.96 million tons and
exports rose by 10% to EUR 4.5 billion.
The capacity utilization rate of
the sector also increased to 73%. In
2022, total production in the sector
reached 3.1 million tons and the value
of production increased by 41% to
EUR 8.5 billion.
The export share of production
is around 70%. This shows the high
competitiveness and quality of Turkish
castings on the world market.
The total production of castings in
the European Union in 2022 was
14,509,000 tons including Turkey.
Turkey contributed 3,108,000 tons,
21.4% of the EU production.

Continues to Invest
and Grow
The capacity utilization rate of the Turkish
metal casting industry in 2022 was
72%, down 2% year-on-year. This decline
was attributed to the orders for over
30 new production lines on the ferrous
casting side and over 100 new production
cells on the non-ferrous casting side

in Turkey in the last two years, and the
high capacity increases experienced as
these lines started to be commissioned.
For the last 3 years, the Turkish foundries
have been making significant machinery
investments in order to meet the increasing
demand for castings from abroad
and orders for finished components/
spare parts, and to comply with the new
quality criterias.
Growth was mainly driven by increases
in non-ferrous castings production. Nonferrous
castings production volume increased
by nearly 13% to 740 thousand
tons from around 650 thousand tons
last year. On the ferrous side, gray cast
iron production fell by 2% to around 900
thousand tons, while spheroidal cast iron
(ductile iron) production increased by 7%
to nearly 1 million 200 thousand tons.

As a result of the transition to electric
and hybrid vehicles, the goal of producing
vehicle bodies with fewer components
using high-pressure aluminum
die-casting techniques and ultimately
producing them as a monolith, instead
of producing them piece by piece and
joining them together with rivets, welding
or other methods, offers a radical
solution that will provide significant
savings to the world's manufacturing
industries. While these activities create
an extraordinary growth potential
for the field of aluminum metal casting,
high-capacity die casting cell investments
are increasing day by day.
In 2022, steel casting production amounted
to 290 thousand tons, showing
an upward trend of 4%. The main drivers
were gridin demand from the
general machinery sectors on a balanced
domestic and international basis,
and growth trends in the mining and
energy sectors. Exports increased by
nearly 36% to 225 thousand tons and
the export ratio rose nearly 30% to
80%.
Turkish foundries are updating their
business models to stay competitive
by adopting the latest innovations and
technological breakthroughs while adhering
to environmental regulations
and Sustainable Production Strategic
Road Maps. This approach not only
enables them to develop customized
solutions for their customers but also
ensures that they are contributing to
sustainable production practices.
In addition, since many production elements
such as 3D sand and metal additive
manufacturing processes, core
production, solidification processes,
workflows, instant monitoring of costs
are interconnected with digitalization
and Industry 4.0 systems, it is of great
importance that the goal of transforming
into a "Smart Foundry" is at the
top of the strategic plans of all foundries.

Exporting to five continents
We talked with Selen Ebra Efe, Head of Strategy Office of Ferro Döküm, one of the
leading companies in the Turkish foundry sector, which will be hosting visitors at
Castforge, about the company's developments and new investments.
Could you tell us about the important
milestones since the establishment of
Ferro Döküm, which has a long history
in the foundry industry?
With its state-of-the-art production lines
with different capabilities, Ferro Döküm
offers a wide range of high quality casting
parts catering to the needs of different
markets.
Ferro Döküm is one of the leading
and pioneering companies in its sector;
The first ministry-approved R&D center,
the first ERP user (late 1980s), the first ISO
56002 Innovation Management System
certification, the first casting simulation
user (late 1990s), and the first and only
independent R&D foundry.
We can respond to all the needs of
the market effectively and quickly with
our advanced R&D capability, high knowhow,
a competent and experienced
team and a roll-up-your-sleves attitude.
With our agile management and over
half a century of experience, we manage
investment needs and feasibility studies

correctly and quickly. Recently, we have
been implementing investments to increase
product and service quality, efficiency
and sustainability.
Could you tell us about Ferro Döküm's
production and technological infrastructure,
especially the investments
made in recent years and your future
targets?
Our main investments made in the last
five years are into; automation developments,
robotic solutions, digitalization,
machinery park renewals, increasing
machining capacity and capability, additive
manufacturing technology (3D Sand
Printer) and renewable energy.
Our most important and biggest project
among our future goals is to establish
a new state-of-the-art, lean and sustainable
foundry equipped with the latest
technology in a new location outside our
current location, where we will reflect
our experience of over 50 years (FERRO
DÖKÜM 2).

As a leading and pioneering foundry
in our industry, our greatest motivation

Can you give information about your
exports (countries and sectors)?
We currently export more than half of
our sales direclty to customers in five
continents. Of our remaining domestic
sales, half goes directly to our customers
Warehouse and is also exported
through our customers. We serve customers
in the heavy and light commercial
vehicles, agriculture, hydraulics,
construction and rail systems industries
and work as Tier 1 and 2 to most
OEM’s.
In 2021 we started our American
company Ferro Castings LLC to Warehouse
and better serve our customers
in the North American market. We are
looking forward to doing the same in
the following years in Europe, to give
better assurance to our European customers
supply chain security.
We will be excitedly waiting for all contacts,
customers and prospective customers
at our stand with our experienced
Sales team who are ready to listen and
understand their needs, provide explanations
on our capabilities weather it be
through word of mouth, 3D pictures and
other materials, and find agile solutions
in order to start or strengthen our partnerships.

A.Ş., shares the history, investments and targets of Çemaş.

Could you briefly tell us about the important
milestones since the establishment
of Çemaş, which has a deep-rooted
history of 50 years in the foundry
sector?
There is no doubt that 1995 was an
important year, we can say that Çemaş,
which was established for supplyoriented
grinding media production for
the Turkish cement industry, joined Işıklar
Holding within the scope of privatisation
and benefited from the experience and
way of doing business of an institutionalised,
well-established industrial company,
which brought Çemaş to its current position.
In 2000, Çemaş started to produce
parts, and in 2008, as a result of sector
surveys and strategic meetings, the first
CNC machining centres were commissioned
and Çemaş took an important step
in order to increase customer satisfaction
and the added value created in parts
production as well as being Turkey's
leading grinding media producer. In
2010, Çemaş was publicly listed and
while strengthening its financial structure
against all kinds of economic risks
in domestic and foreign markets, it also
started to benefit from the conditions
required by the public offering. In 2020,
Çemaş started investments in quality
systems, CNC machining centers, new
casting lines, solar power plants (installed
6 MW, additional 13 MW planned to
be commissioned by the end of 2024),
cataphoresis plant and MES systems,
and continued to be the leading foundry
of our region while stepping into
industry 4.0 in the context of vertical
integration and value added increase
targets, by commissioning the investments
one by one.

Could you give us some information
about Çemaş/Işıklar Döküm's production,
technological infrastructure, especially
the investments made in recent years
and your future targets?
As Çemaş/Işıklar Döküm, we have a production
capacity of 50 thousand tonnes
per year. We have a 57 CNC machining
facility that enables us to manufacture customer
parts and our own models, a stateof-the-art
cataphoresis facility with wet/
powder/cataphoresis coating capabilities,
precise and robotic quality control technologies
including X-ray and 3D scanning for
advanced quality measurements, and a
solar power generation facility that will add
6 MW at the moment and 13 MW by the
end of the year. In recent years, we have
invested in new melting furnaces, horizontal
and vertical moulding lines, new CNC
machines, automatic grinding machines,
sand regeneration plant, cataphoresis
plant and MES system software/hardware.
Especially with MES, we have made a
tremendous technological breakthrough
in which we will collect and process the
data coming out of our factory with image
processing software containing artificial
intelligence technologies. The common
ground of all these investments points to
our future goals; to increase our exportoriented,
value-added parts production, in
which we are a solution partner with the
customer, together with grinding media
production, to continuously modernise
and improve our processes with industry
4.0 methods, and to reduce our carbon
footprint by increasing our recycling rate
and energy efficiency. We are proud to
see that we are taking steps that prove our
accuracy every day with the value-added
parts approvals from our main customers
from the automotive and agricultural machinery
industry, who aim for lean production
lines and whose environmental awareness
is increasing day by day.
Can you give information about your exports
(countries and sectors)?
We export our parts production mainly to
the European market. We are the suppliers
of leading automotive, machinery industry
and white goods manufacturers in countries
such as Italy, UK, Germany, France and
Poland. Our relations with our customers
turn into value-added solution partnerships
with our investments and well-versed engineering
team. In grinding media exports,
we supply to the Middle East and Central
Asian countries as well as Europe. As Işıklar
Group, we have an export target of 50 per
cent in each of our companies, and as Çemaş/Işıklar
Döküm, we are taking firm steps
towards this target every year.

Having sped up its operations in order to enlarge its product and market range, the
Bilginoğlu Group keeps its growth without slowing down.

Having maintained its existence in
the industry through multi-directional
services since 1973, Mr İsmail Bilginoğulları,
Chairman of the Board of Directors
of the Bilginoğlu Group, said,
“We supply raw materials and auxiliary
materials to all iron and non-iron
foundries and steelworks in Europe,
Middle East and Northern Africa, including
pre-eminently Türkiye, through
our company BDM Bilginoğlu Döküm.
We provide sales, calibration and
technical services for quality control

Reminding the they started to quickly
regain their losses at the beginning
of this year after the pandemic,
Mr Bilginoğulları said, “We target to
close 2023 as one of the leading companies
of the sector.”
Saying that they make investments
in order to enlarge the area of competence
of the Bilginoğlu Calibration
Laboratory (BCL), Mr Bilginoğulları
said, “Besides, we have started a new
investment on an area of 10.000 sqm
at Yalova İmes. We keep enlarging our
product range through our new products.
We target to widen our current
export businesses with our neighbouring
countries through the countries
of Northern Africa, Middle East and
Eastern Europe, thus increasing our
turnover in 2023.”
Emphasising that the construction
at Yalova İmes shall be completed
in 2023, Mr Bilginoğulları defended,
“This new facility bears so great an
importance for our several goals for
the future. We target to enlarge both
our calibration laboratory and our
maintain-and-repair facility for the after-sales
services of the products and
systems which we have just included
into our sales portfolio. It is shown
that unforeseeable and almost always
changing hitches in the supply chain

Association is shaping the future
of the industry with the TÜDÖK-
SAD Academy, a dedicated hub for
comprehensive vocational training
programs. Since 2015, it is organizing
monthly training activities and
annual foundry congresses (International
& National) which aims to
improve the knowledge of foundrymen
and attract young people.
From mastering the basics of foundry
processes to exploring the
frontiers of automation and digitalization,
the Academy offers a diverse
curriculum that caters to every
stage of a foundry professional's
journey. The Academy's impact extends
beyond technical expertise.
It instills a culture of safety, a dedication
to sustainability, and a passion
for continuous learning, ensuring
that the Turkish metal casting
industry remains both competitive
and future-proof.
Additionally, the online education
platform Dökümhane Academy
(https://dokumhane.net/), which
TÜDÖKSAD has been directing the
content production and promotional
activities since the beginning
of 2019, offers free educational
materials and short interviews with
young metal casters that presents
the foundry industry to the students
interested in casting.
TÜDÖKSAD also offers training
programs and internship opportunities
for professional development.
As the new generation is looking
for opportunities to learn and develop
new skills, TÜDÖKSAD concentrates
all its efforts on this field
and changing the perception of our
industry.

TÜDÖKSAD Foundry
Congresses Ignite Innovations!
TÜDÖKSAD has been organizing the
International Foundry Congress every
two years since 1999, and the National
Foundry Congress every two years
since 2017. The congresses aim
to bring together leading international
and national experts, researchers, and
industry professionals in the field of
metal casting.
Istanbul's ancient furnaces will soon
be joined by a modern melting pot of
ideas as the city prepares to host the
12th TÜDÖKSAD International Foundry
Congress on 19-21 September, 2024,

fairs. The three-day event promises to
be a crucible of knowledge and collaboration,
attracting foundry professionals
from around the world to share insights,
ignite the innovation and shape
the future of the industry.

focusing on the latest advancements,
trends, and challenges in foundry technology.
They will have plenty of opportunities
to network with peers, establish
collaborations, and engage with
industry leaders. The congresses aim
to foster a collaborative environment
that promotes knowledge-sharing and
the development of new partnerships.

CHROMAFOR E-Learning Platform:
A New Way to Learn Circular HR
Management in the Foundry Sector
CHROMAFOR E-Learning Platform, that both individually and collectively applicable, provides an
opportunity for the implementation of a new Human Resources Management Model aimed to
improve the current skills and competencies of foundry employees in line with the circular principles.

The CHROMAFOR E-Learning Platform,
a web-based learning and knowledge
sharing platform for circular human resources
management in the foundry
sector, was officially launched in March,
2023. The platform is one of the main
outcomes of the CHROMAFOR project,
funded by the European Union under
the Erasmus+ programme.
The CHROMAFOR project aims to develop
the skills and competencies of human
resources managers and staff in the
metal casting industry, in order to promote
the adoption of circular economy principles
and practices in their operations.
Circular economy is an economic model
that aims to reduce waste and environmental
impact by keeping resources in
use for as long as possible, and recovering
and regenerating them at the end of
their service life.
The CHROMAFOR E-Learning Platform
offers six modules that cover the
basic technical and environmental concepts,
the relevant laws and regulations,
the environmental management systems
and sustainability, the circular economy
strategies, the circular economy assessment
and measurement, and the
circular economy communication and
dissemination in the foundry sector. Each
module consists of lessons, exercises,
resources and videos that help the learners
to acquire the knowledge and skills
needed for a circular human resources
management in foundries.
The platform is free and open to anyone
who is interested in learning more
about circular economy and its application
in the metal casting industry. The
platform is available in four languages:
English, Turkish, Spanish and Italian.
The CHROMAFOR E-Learning Platform
is expected to contribute to the
improvement of the environmental performance
and competitiveness of the foundry
sector in Europe, as well as to the
enhancement of the employability and
career prospects of the human resources
professionals in this sector.
