LKQ EURO CAR PARTS 

HELPS GARAGES PREPARE 

FOR AIR CON SERVICING 

LKQ Euro Car Parts is supporting garages as they prepare to meet 

customers’ air conditioning servicing needs this summer, with training 

through LKQ Academy and new deals on equipment. 

The UK’s leading distributor of car and 

van parts and accessories is offering 

air-con bundle deals in May, with the 

option to buy now and pay later, ensuring 

garages are well equipped to tackle a spike 

in servicing demand in the months ahead. 

Bundle deals start at £3,699* (excl. VAT) 

and include a nitrogen test kit and leak 

detector, gas and a choice of machine. 

All bundles come with a three-year 

service and warranty guarantee, with 

trusted Autoclimate engineers on hand to 

offer technical support over the phone or 

in person. The specialist Autoclimate team 

– part of LKQ Euro Car Parts’ Workshop 

Solutions division – carries out more than 

10,000 air con related jobs each year, 

across the UK and Ireland. 

Garages can also upskill technicians 

to maximise opportunities for air con 

servicing. Key LKQ Academy courses include 

‘Cooling & Climate Systems – Understanding 

Vehicle Air Conditioning’, which provides indepth 

training to delegates on diagnostics, 

components and tooling for £199 (excl. VAT) 

per candidate, and ‘L3 Refrigerant Handling 

VRQ (F-Gas)’, which is a legal requirement 

for those technicians working on R134a 

vehicle air con systems. 

To protect technician safety and help 

look after the environment, LKQ Euro Car 

Parts requires all garages to provide proof 

of their F-gas handling qualification before 

they can purchase R134a. R134a was the 

standard refrigerant used in all vehicles 

before 2013 and while it’s since been 

replaced by the more environmentallyfriendly 

R1234yf, it is still prevalent in the UK 

car parc. The ‘L3 Refrigerant Handling VRQ 

(F-Gas)’ course is available from £250 (excl. 

VAT) per candidate.

director at LKQ Euro Car Parts, said:

conditioning on for the first time as warmer 

weather arrives. But many might find faults, 

from weak airflows to bad smells, which 

have crept in over a long winter. And it’s

overheating of key safety and performance 

components in EVs and hybrids.

UK FIRST AA launches a 

trio of FULL-ELECTRIC 

Recovery Vehicles 

● Up to 6000 kg payload and 170 mile range from one charge 

● Major focus on piloting shift to low emissions vehicles in preparation for net zero 

Fully electric recovery trucks will be 

hitting the UK’s roads thanks to a 

pioneering launch from The AA. 

The move will see The AA become the 

first UK-based roadside assistance firm to 

add full electric recovery vehicles to its 

fl e e t . 

Due to the complex vehicle requirements, 

The AA is taking a “test and scale” approach 

to fleet decarbonisation with structured 

tests of alternative fuel vehicles in real-life 

settings. 

The UK’s largest motoring organisation 

hosted a Fleet Decarbonisation event at its 

Oldbury Operations Centre on 24th May, 

unveiling the most recent additions to its 

3000-vehicle-strong roadside assistance 

and recovery fleet. 

Edmund King OBE, AA president, and 

Duncan Webb, AA’s head of fleet, welcomed 

guests from across the motoring world to 

present an overview of The AA’s Motoring 

Manifesto, The AA’s latest Environment 

Social and Governance (ESG) report and its 

plans to extend its range of low emissions 

concept vehicles. The pair discussed how 

The AA will navigate its way towards a net 

zero future before unveiling The AA’s latest 

electric concept vehicles to the gathered 

motoring press and fleet suppliers. 

Amongst an impressive selection of 

low-emission vehicles from across The AA 

business sat the day’s main attractions: a 

fully electric Volvo FE Slidebed; an Iveco 

eDaily Powerload; an Iveco eDaily crew 

van equipped with a heavy-duty Compact 

Recovery Trailer (CRT). These vehicles will 

become the first operational EV recovery 

trucks in the UK, accelerating the company’s 

efforts to meet its 2035 net zero target. 

Edmund King OBE said: “Introducing these 

exciting new concept vehicles to our fleet 

is an important step towards our goal of 

becoming a net zero company by 2035. 

“As a market-leading organisation, we

are committed to showing the way as the 

country transitions to a zero emissions 

future.” 

Volvo FE Boniface Slidebed 

This electric version of the Volvo FE 19T is 

equipped with a Boniface VLA (very low 

angle) slidebed. It is the latest addition to 

a growing partnership between The AA and 

the Swedish vehicle maker. The vehicle can 

carry 6000kg on its recovery bed and up 

to 2000kg on its 2nd car lift. The vehicle 

has an impressive range of 170 miles and 

a recharge rate of 2.25 hours when using 

a 150kWh rapid charger. The spacious cab 

can carry two passengers in comfort and is 

likely to be used to recover vehicles in and 

around low-emissions zones such as London 

and Birmingham.

Fleet Manager, said: “This is a fantastic 

opportunity for us to expand our 

partnership with Volvo. Adding the zeroemission 

Volvo FE 19T Boniface-equipped 

recovery truck to our fleet, with its 

impressive payload capabilities and quick 

charging times is sure to make a positive 

impact, especially in low-emission zones. 

The comfort and space in the cab are an 

added bonus. This exciting addition is the 

result of lots of innovative work between 

The AA Fleet Engineering team, Volvo and 

Boniface – huge credit goes to all involved!” 

Iveco eDaily 7.2T Dyson Powerload 

The Iveco eDaily Powerload features Roger 

Dyson’s innovative remote loading system 

which alleviates most of the manual handling 

for recovery operatives by deploying the 

loading ramps remotely. This electric 

concept vehicle has a minimum range of 

100 miles which is adequate to cover its 

intended low-emission zone application. 

The impressive 3000kg payload is more than 

sufficient to carry a broad range of vehicles 

including SUVs. An 80kWh rapid charger is 

likely to take this impressive vehicle from 

low charge to fully charged in less than an 

hour (0.8 hours), similar to an HGV driver’s 

tachograph break. The airy cab, which 

features good cross-cab access can seat 

two passengers in addition to the driver. 

Dug Dudley, AA Fleet Engineer, said: “The 

Iveco eDaily Powerload concept really is an 

amazing vehicle. The remote loading system 

from Roger Dyson is such a game-changer 

for recovery operatives, making their job so 

much easier. And with a 100-mile range and 

a 3000kg payload, it ticks all the boxes for 

us. Its rapid charging capability is a fantastic 

feature too, making recharging quick and 

convenient. Plus, the spacious cab with 

room for two passengers is a nice touch. 

We’re excited to see how the trial of this 

innovative vehicle goes when real-world 

scenarios will put these latest technologies 

through their paces.” 

Iveco eDaily CRT Van 

Based on an Iveco eDaily crew van which 

has undergone a specialist conversion to 

allow proper installation of our CRT unit 

(which is commonplace across our fleet), 

the eDaily CRT van features a twin battery 

set-up which delivers an increased range 

of approximately 160 miles with an identical 

0.8 hours recharge time to the eDaily 

Powerload, when using an 80 kWh charger. 

With a large passenger area to the rear 

of the driver, AA members can sit in the 

comfort of the leather AA-branded seats 

around a custom-made table complete 

with cup holders and built-in USB charge 

points. The specialist conversion has been 

completed by Victory Conversions and 

included installing an up-and-over roller 

shutter door, to allow recovery operators 

to deploy the CRT safely. The heavy-duty 

CRT, specially adapted by TowPro Ltd, can 

carry casualty vehicles of up to 3,250kg 

and can also recover motorcycles, EVs 

and 4x4s (when utilising the innovative AA 

Freewheeling Hubs). 

George Flinton, AA Fleet Support 

Engineer, said: “The Iveco eDaily CRT van 

looks like a real game-changer for us. 

We’re impressed with the increased range 

of 160 miles and quick recharge time when 

using an 80 kWh charger and the fact that it 

has a spacious passenger area with enough 

room for six passengers. The leather 

embossed seats and USB charge points are 

also a nice touch. Its strength though, lies 

in its ability to carry a variety of vehicles, 

including motorcycles, EVs, and 4x4s, 

making it a versatile option. The comfort 

levels all around make this van a great 

choice for The AA in terms of our net zero 

and the need for reliable and comfortable 

transportation for our members.” 

Duncan Webb added: “We’re excited 

to introduce these groundbreaking 

vehicles to our ‘test and scale’ approach 

to fleet decarbonisation. All the vehicles 

on show today are subject to structured 

tests in real-life settings and include both 

hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO), electric 

in the highest emission intensity HGVs and 

across our wide range of Van applications. 

These vehicles form the foundation of 

learning for scale deployment in the near 

and long-term future for our customers.”

I HAVE A SMART PHONE. 

It fits in with my lifestyle, it works, 

it does what I want it to, I trust it. 

I HAVE A SMART TV. 

It’s reliable, it works, 

it does what I want it to, I trust it. 

I HAVE A SMART WATCH. 

It’s reliable, it works, it does most 

of what I want it to, I trust it. 

I USE THE SMART MOTORWAY. 

It’s unreliable, it doesn’t work, 

it doesn’t do what I want it to, 

and it most definitely isn’t 

reliable, so I don’t trust it. 

I 

picked up a short-term contract recently 

which involved commuting a substantial 

distance each day. 

How substantial? Try 109 miles, each way, 

every day. Or just over 1000 miles a week. 

If that wasn’t bad enough, it also involved 

the M1 and the M25. Yes, exactly, you see 

where this is going now! 

Both motorways have sections that 

are “smart”. So that means the traffic is 

monitored and the speed limits are adjusted 

so that I can make the best use of my time. 

Because a motorway is primarily designed to 

allow us to travel from point A to point B in 

the quickest, safest and most efficient way 

possible. 

The problem is unfortunately, very simple. 

It doesn’t. It’s not safe, it’s not efficient 

and it isn’t safe. I don’t trust the messages

displayed so now I ignore them. Why? 

Because I have never seen the animals, they 

are warning me of, neither have I seen the 

oncoming car or the pedestrians. They slow 

the traffic to 40 if there’s a breakdown and 

close it all altogether if they’re bored. 

The solution for me? 

Avoid them both with a 15 mile detour, 

driving through two extra counties, to save 

about 45 minutes. The M40 is not smart, yet 

I make more progress, most of the time than 

the alternative. 

So, what’s the difference between the two 

different routes? 

One uses a Smart Motorway for the whole 

journey whereas the other only uses one 

for about 15 miles. One takes about 10-45 

minutes longer than the other or longer if it’s 

closed, which it is about once a month. Then 

it’s almost an hour longer, depending on 

where it’s closed (usually around Luton). 

So, driving a longer journey on a nonsmart 

motorway saves me time and is usually 

within five minutes of the journey time the 

day before. 

Ah, what if there’s an accident on that 

route? If it isn’t smart, it’ll take longer to get 

through, I hear you say? 

No. Sorry, it doesn’t work like that. And I 

can prove it. 

Something happened on the M1, and it’s 

closed. I didn’t see what happened and 

it added 60 minutes to my journey home. 

Using the M40 I passed a car across the 

carriageway with its front bumper in the 

centre reservation. Same time of the day 

yet everyone slowed to 50/60 as they drove 

past the stricken BMW 520. 

Same thing on a return journey. I 

encounter a Toyota on its roof as the 

emergency services work their magic, yet it 

barely impacted my journey time by more 

than five minutes.

automotive industry charity. The partnership kicked off with a visit 

from Ben representatives to Draper’s Hampshire head office on 8th 

May 2024. During the visit, Draper Tools presented a special donation 

of £10,000 to the charity. 

Ben is the charity dedicated to supporting the people of the 

automotive industry, providing support for life for them and their 

family dependents. Speaking about the new partnership Sarah 

Hartland, Head of Marketing at Draper Tools commented:

NTDA elects new 

Board members 

and Executive Officers 

At the 95th AGM held on Thursday 25th April, the NTDA appointed 

two new directors to the Board of the National Tyre Distributors 

Association (the Company). 

NTDA Past Chairman Roger Griggs 

The first new Company Board 

appointment, ratified unanimously 

by the Executive Council, was that of 

Roger Griggs Communications Director at 

European Tyre Enterprise Ltd. 

Roger is a highly respected Honorary Life 

Member of the NTDA and was awarded the 

National Chairman’s Award for Outstanding 

Contribution to the Tyre Industry in 2023. 

He previously served as an Executive 

Officer of the Association from 2013 to 

2017 and as National Chairman, oversaw the 

development and implementation of the 

Corporate Plan which included the longterm 

objective of changing the Association’s 

legal status from a Trust to a company 

limited by guarantee, which was achieved in 

2023. 

Roger was appointed to the Board 

to replace Simon Wright of Halfords 

Commercial Fleet Services who is leaving 

the tyre industry to take up a senior position 

in the packaging industry. As Simon will no 

longer be a member representative and, 

therefore, not in a position to serve as 

Immediate Past National Chairman, Roger 

will also act in that capacity to provide 

continuity to both the Company and the 

Association. 

Simon Wright’s last duty was to hand 

over the National Chairman’s badge of 

office to Board member Martin O’Brien 

of Commercial Director at Halfords 

Commercial Fleet Services, who was 

unanimously elected and installed, for a 

second term in office. NTDA CEO Stefan Hay 

said: “Naturally, we wish Simon Wright all 

the very best in his future endeavours, but 

he is leaving the Association in safe hands, 

as Martin is universally recognised across 

the trade as an ambassador both for the 

NTDA and for its objectives. He worked 

closely alongside me as chairman from 

2019-2002 during one of the most difficult 

times for the country and tyre trade, 

namely the Covid 19 pandemic. During that 

time, he continuously demonstrated clear 

strategic thinking, combined with a passion 

for ensuring that our members are well 

represented and cared for. Needless to say. 

I am delighted to have the opportunity to 

work with him again as we continue to build 

an association that offers tangible benefits 

to our members.” 

The second new Board appointment was 

that of Justin Ampofo FCCA the Finance 

Director at NTDA supplier member Autotech 

Group. Justin replaces NTDA Honorary 

Life Member Donald Carmichael both 

as a Company director and as Honorary 

Treasurer of the Association. Justin 

has a wealth of experience in financial 

management gained over 17 years working 

for an array of corporate business entities, 

charities, and trusts, making him a very 

worthy successor to Donald who has served 

as an Executive Council member, Vice 

National Chairman and, latterly for 10 years 

as Honorary Treasurer, since 2005. 

Speaking about Donald’s retirement 

Stefan Hay said: “Donald has been a 

constant supporter of both me and the 

NTDA over the past 11 years of my tenure 

here. He is a trusted advisor, mentor 

and friend and I will miss his sage advice

awareness campaign at the two-day 

show at the National Exhibition 

Centre (NEC) in Birmingham, taking 

place from 05 to 06 June 

The initiative, designed to emphasise 

the importance of tyre maintenance 

and regular checks by vehicle users, 

is supported by both TyreSafe, and 

the tyre and road safety campaigner,

the concept of ‘time’, have been 

created to promote a series of key 

messages to drivers 

The Motor Ombudsman, the 

Ombudsman dedicated to the 

automotive sector, has unveiled its 

‘Make Time for Tyres’ campaign, as part 

of its showcase at this year’s UK Garage & 

Bodyshop Event. The bi-annual two-day 

salon at the National Exhibition Centre 

(NEC) in Birmingham, brings together 

businesses and professionals working in the 

aftermarket sector. 

The tyre safety awareness initiative, 

which is supported by TyreSafe, and the 

tyre and road safety campaigner Sophie 

Lyden, is geared around the concept of 

‘time’. It has been launched to emphasise 

the need for vehicle users to regularly 

check that their tyres are safe and 

legal, in terms of their pressure, tread 

depth, and overall condition. Every year, 

around 57% of cars on UK roads have 

tyres that are running at 10% below the 

optimum pressure levels recommended 

by vehicle manufacturers 1 . This equates to 

approximately 75 million under-inflated 

tyres 2 , highlighting the importance of 

increased awareness around this crucial 

aspect of vehicle maintenance. 

The blue tick insignia, which sits at the 

heart of The Motor Ombudsman’s widelyrecognised 

logo, is a core feature of the 

design ethos of the ‘Make Time for Tyres’ 

campaign. It has been incorporated both 

as a ‘tick for safety’, and a symbol of 

reassurance and quality, to reinforce the 

fact that consumers will receive the highest 

standards of work and service when visiting 

a garage that is accredited to The Motor 

Ombudsman’s Service and Repair Code, 

for any aspect of looking after their car, 

including when it comes to tyres.

promotional assets equally bear a QR code 

for consumers to easily access tyre-related 

information on The Motor Ombudsman’s 

website (TheMotorOmbudsman.org/Tyres) 

via a smartphone. Content includes, key 

maintenance tips, and resources produced 

as part of the body’s TyreSafe Awardwinning 

campaign on the use of winter tyres 

and wheel accessories during periods of 

cold weather. 

In the coming weeks, graphics, which 

will follow the same visual identity as the 

aforementioned promotional assets, will 

also be a core communications channel 

for this initiative, and will be posted on The 

Motor Ombudsman’s social media channels, 

to reach a wide consumer and business 

audience. These will be complemented 

by short videos highlighting some of the 

fundamentals of looking after tyres, filmed 

in association with Sophie Lyden.

First ever REPXPERT 

Award winners 

announced 

The winners of the REPXPERT Awards were announced 

during the Schaeffler REPXPERT Conference, 

held on Wednesday 22nd May at Coventry MTC. 

Apprentice technicians from the East 

Midlands and North West, along with a 

garage in the North East were named 

as the first-ever winners at the REPXPERT 

Awards, which took place during the 

inaugural Schaeffler REPXPERT Conference. 

Mia Reeves of Bear and Bee Garage 

in Grantham, Lincolnshire was named 

Apprentice of the Year after garage cofounder 

Russ Houlden put forward her 

nomination. The category sought to find the 

most promising apprentice technician in the 

sector, based on technical proficiency or 

progress. 

“Mia is personable, polite, friendly, hardworking, 

willing to learn and enthusiastic,” 

said Russ. “She is everything you would want 

from a young apprentice. That isn’t why she 

deserves this award though. This industry is 

a male-dominated space, but Mia has never 

once let that phase her. Her passion and 

enjoyment are clear for all to see.” 

Andrew Mather of Stockport Truck Centre 

in St Helens – also an apprentice – was 

honoured with the Extra Mile award, which 

recognises those who have gone above and 

beyond normal expectations. 

Unable to make it to the REPXPERT 

Awards due to an exam, Kathryn Weilding 

from Complete Auto Repair Service (CARS), 

a nearby garage in Bickerstaff, collected 

the award on Andrew’s behalf after putting 

forward his nomination. 

“He always puts work and others before 

himself,” said Kathryn. “He is a credit to 

in business for 16 years, and it is great to 

receive this sort of recognition. If you use 

the right components, you only do the job 

once. This is why we always use LuK, INA and 

FAG parts; they are the highest quality. 

“We also use the REPXPERT app to

videos, and it is great that our commitment 

to training and advancement has been 

noted here as well.” 

The REPXPERT conference was held at 

Coventry’s Manufacturing Training Centre 

(MTC), and the names of the REPXPERT 

Award winners were announced to an 

audience of over 200 attendees. 

“The winners of the first-ever REPXPERT 

Awards are among the best that the industry 

has to offer,” said Matthew Selby, Sales and 

Marketing Director at Schaeffler Automotive 

Aftermarket (UK) Ltd. “Congratulations to all 

Kathryn Weilding from Complete Auto Repair 

Service (CARS), a nearby garage in Bickerstaff, 

collected the Extra Mile Award on Andrew’s behalf 

after putting forward his nomination.

For the first time, The Blend’s Garage of 

the Year Award will be divided into three 

subcategories, ensuring a level playing

their size. These categories cater to 

garages with one to four staff members, 

those with five or more staff, and multisite 

garage operations. 

Recognising the hard work and 

expertise of individuals in the UK 

independent garage sector is the Staff 

Recognition Award. This award, along with 

the Garage of the Year Award, is open to 

any independent garage in the UK and 

Ireland. Entries will be evaluated by a 

panel of industry judges including Hayley 

Pells, Policy and Public Affairs Lead at 

the Institute of the Motor Industry, Andy 

Crook of Atomic Success, and The Blend 

Podcast host, Mike Ruff. 

Completing the award categories 

are Community’s Garage of the Year, 

determined by a Garage Hive community 

poll, while Community Member of the Year 

and the Garage Hive Innovator Award will 

be selected by Garage Hive. 

“We’ll be honouring the very best of the 

independent garage sector, surrounded by 

friends and colleagues while exchanging 

ideas over food and drinks,” said Ray. 

“We encourage all garages to seize 

this opportunity to showcase their 

achievements and elevate their business 

to new heights.” 

The submission deadline for award 

applications is 28th July, with the winners 

being named at The Blend 2024. The 

evening dinner and awards ceremony will 

follow an impressive daytime line-up of 

insightful talks, including tips and advice 

on how to boost workshop efficiency 

and performance, tackle industry 

challenges and tap into new and emerging 

opportunities. 

Last year, Laura Guild from Lawson 

AutoTech received the Staff Recognition 

Award, while Cleevely Motors was 

named The Blend Garage of the Year 

2023. Fife AutoTech was recognised as 

the Community’s Garage of the Year, 

Mark Kettle of EAC Telford won the 

Community’s Member of the Year, and 

Kirsty Watson of Autocentre Chorley 

received the esteemed Garage Hive 

Innovator Award.

Shaftec’s 

New To Range expands 

with 17 new products 

Birmingham-based automotive remanufacturer 

Shaftec Automotive has made further additions 

to its New To Range portfolio, with 13 driveshafts, 

two brake calipers, one steering rack and one 

steering column joining the range. 

Key applications for these recent additions 

include the TE250R front driveshaft for 

the Tesla Model X (2015), the AU466LR 

front driveshaft for the Audi Q5 (2016), 

the NI242R front driveshaft for the Nissan 

Qashqai (2013), the ERC542 steering rack for 

the Vauxhall Corsa (2014), and the BC11897/ 

BC21897 brake calipers for the Hyundai i10 

(2019). The new parts work with select frontwheel 

drive, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive 

vehicles that run on petrol, diesel, electricity 

and liquified petroleum gas (LPG). 

They each join previous additions from April, 

which featured 16 new brake calipers and six 

driveshafts, covering vehicle manufacturers

Here are some signs that your driveshafts might need changing: 

l Inspect the driveshaft: Look for any signs of damage such 

as cracks or dents. 

l Check the U-joints: Check if there is any play or looseness in them. 

l Check for vibrations: If you feel any vibrations while driving, 

it could be an indication of a damaged driveshaft. 

l Listen for noises: If you hear any clunking or grinding noises 

while driving, it could be an indication of a damaged driveshaft.

Growing opportunities 

in the classic car market 

The constant growth of the Classic Car sector and its absorption of the increasingly popular 

“Youngtimer” period - ‘80s ‘90s and even Noughties – means that more and more historic vehicles 

are on the roads – especially as the weather get better with Summer Beckoning. 

This presents real and growing 

opportunities for garage workshops 

and those supplying them - and 

Motul is heavily invested in the classic 

market, both with its product range and 

its involvement in the sector in general. 

Using today’s technology to benefit 

historic vehicles 

There have been major steps forward in 

engine development since the motor car 

arrived and, as car engines have changed, 

so the oils that help keep them running 

smoothly have also developed, in line with 

these changes. 

Therefore, if your work brings you into 

contact with classic cars or even what are 

described as “Youngtimer” vehicles, the 

latest crop of engine oils might well not be 

the best option for them. 

In response, lubricant companies have 

developed ranges specifically to deal with 

engines of particular vintages - and these 

in turn offer opportunities for workshops 

both for increased customer satisfaction 

and increased revenue. 

Fifteen years ago, Motul launched its 

specialised classic oil range, developed 

with detergent levels adapted to better 

suit old engines and, where necessary, 

include additives to prevent potential 

problems from these older units, as well 

as promote optimal running. 

Thes range covers everything from 

Pre-War vehicles all the way up to 

Youngtimers. The latter are more 

affordable, compared to earlier vehicles 

and have become increasingly collectable. 

The market is estimated at almost 10 

million cars, of which there are hundreds 

of thousands in the UK. 

There are now, therefore, lubricant 

options suited to whatever rolls into the 

workshop, all using modern technology to 

help older cars to work as they should. 

Motul splits its classic motor oils into 

the following specifications of oil – all of 

which come in tin packs, to differentiate 

them from modern oils. The key 

characteristics of each oil are designed 

to tie in with the specific requirements of 

engines of their period.

1900s-1950s SAE30 and SAE50 

Mineral monograde lubricant with very 

low detergent level for a complete 

compatibility with paper / felt / fabric

1950s-1970s Classic Oil 20W50 

Mineral multigrade lubricant with midlevel 

detergents, compatible with engines 

which have elastomer gaskets. 

The 20W50 oil meets standards of 

the 1950 – 1970 period (API SF/CC) while 

benefiting from modern technology. Its 

viscosity is suited to engines with narrow 

running clearances, due to significant 

progress at the time in metallurgy, casting 

and machining. Good anti-corrosion and 

anti-wear properties. 

1960s Classic Oil 2100 15W-50 

In 1966 Motul produced 2100, which was 

the first semi-synthetic lubricant in the 

automotive market. This is an updated 

version of that famous semi-synthetic oil, 

now developed for naturally aspirated and 

turbocharged original engines built after 

1970. 

“Youngtimers” 

Classic Eighties 10w-40 and Classic 

Nineties 10w-30 

Semi-synthetic multigrade engine oils 

specially designed for Modern Classic and 

Youngtimer vehicles fitted with 4-stroke 

engines, either Petrol or Diesel - naturally 

aspirated, supercharged or turbocharged, 

injection or carburettor. These two engine 

oils deliver bespoke protection and 

optimum functionality for these classic 

engines. 

Extending the opportunity further 

Just as with modern cars, there are many 

other lubricant and fluid requirements 

for Classics and Youngtimers. Motul has 

therefore extended its Classic range to 

include additives, coolants, cleaners and 

vehicle care products, which, like the 

engine oils, are designed specifically for 

the maintenance and care of classic cars. 

Motul also offers the opportunity to do 

a full laboratory oil analysis to search for 

contaminants and metal elements present 

in the lubricant and detect premature or 

accelerated engine or gearbox wear. It 

can also analyse the composition of the 

lubricant in use to highlight any coolant 

leaks or fuel dilution that may damage the 

engine.

Classic Oil 

for Classic Cars? 

VLS Company Secretary David Wright discusses 

the potential issues of using modern lubricants in 

older engines and how to make the right oil selection. 

Classic cars are a wonderful part of our 

automotive heritage. But they can 

be a challenge to maintain. Parts can 

be hard to find, and each car has a different 

level of modernisation. 

Engine oil is an area where a classic car 

needs careful attention. Gone are the days 

when a conventional SAE 20W-50 was 

regularly used. Whilst that might still be 

suitable for classic car engines which are 

generally lower revving, delivering less brake 

horsepower for a given capacity, it would 

no longer be recommended for a modern 

engine. Lubricant technology has evolved 

significantly over recent decades to meet 

government requirements for reduced 

emissions and consumer needs for economy 

and performance. Today, smaller capacity 

engines are running at higher power outputs 

to maximise efficiency, deliver fuel economy 

and reduce emissions. Longer oil drain 

intervals, taken together with smaller sumps, 

have created the need for less viscous, 

synthetic or semi-synthetic oils to provide 

the lubrication required in these challenging 

conditions. 

Whilst most lubricant manufacturers 

and blenders sell these highly efficient, 

ultra-low viscosity lubricants such as SAE 

0W-16, the latest formulations may not be 

suitable for the classic vehicles in your 

workshop. Backwards compatibility of 

modern engine oils in terms of SAE viscosity 

and the performance specifications 

claimed cannot be assumed. Given the 

advanced chemistries used and the differing 

requirements of some of the OEMs, it’s 

fair to say that engine oils should now 

be considered as an individual engine 

component. 

Many lubricant manufacturers offer 

a range of classic car engine oils which 

have been specifically designed to meet 

the needs of older engines. These higher 

viscosity oils include a unique blend of

additives with detergent and dispersant 

properties, to ensure good lubricant 

film strength and smooth running, whilst 

protecting engine components, and ensuring 

that any unwanted contaminants end up in 

the sump instead of harming components. 

Engine additives have also been 

developed for classic cars. However, 

lubricant technology is a fine balance of 

chemistry. At VLS, we don’t recommend the 

addition of standalone additives if the engine 

oil is used in line with the manufacturer 

recommendations and service intervals 

are maintained, as they may interfere with 

the workings of oils that have been already 

specifically designed for classic engines. 

For modern vehicles, engine oil selection 

is made much easier by online vehicle 

databases that allow you to search by 

the vehicle number plate. For classic 

cars, oil selection isn’t so easy. At VLS, we 

recommend referring to the original vehicle 

handbook or the servicing and warranty 

handbook where possible to identify the 

correct oil. If in doubt, contact the OEM 

or consult a lubricant manufacturer that 

produces their own range of classic car 

oils. Their technical department should be 

able to advise if an oil is suitable for your 

application. 

Whether it’s a cherished classic or a 

ground-breaking hybrid, using the wrong 

oil really does matter. It risks accelerated 

wear to gears, bearings and other vital 

components. Left unchecked, it could lead 

to eventual engine failure, meaning higher 

maintenance costs for your customers 

and potential damage to your business’ 

reputation. Don’t run the risk. Take time 

to check that the engine oil you select is 

suitable for that particular vehicle, and don’t 

be afraid to consult external sources of 

information or suppliers if needed.

Events 

Great British Motor Shows 

(GBMS) is not a name that 

people might be instantly aware 

of, but the Lancashire-based 

automotive events company is 

offering no less than 15 regional 

car shows throughout the UK 

over the course of 2024. 

Attracting between 400 and 1000 

cars for display and around four 

thousand people at each show, 

2024 sees its key events given special 

“Signature” status. This attracted the 

attention of Automotive PR and Marketing 

specialists, Chicane, who were looking 

for ways in which to celebrate a special 

anniversary.

partnering GBMS for their five Signature

The first of these events is GBMS’s 

flagship show – the Masters of Motoring.

first day being a track action day at Castle 

Combe track followed by a Concours day 

at nearby Bowood House & Gardens. 

Masters of Motoring is a unique formula

participants to enjoy the option of driving 

one of the UK’s most challenging race 

circuits, as well as displaying their cars, 

joining other like-minded enthusiasts who 

are doing the same with their vehicles. 

Castle Combe circuit has an incredibly 

varied entry – with everything from 

Historic F1 Cars, through 8-litre Can-Am 

monsters from the 1970s to the growling 

NASCARs made famous by Tom Cruise in 

Days of Thunder. Add into that a selection 

of supercars, rally cars and classics and it 

adds up to something for everyone who is 

a car enthusiast – all available to watch in 

action and on show. 

Visitors to Masters can enjoy both 

aspects of the events as well as having the 

opportunity to cruise the trade stands and 

look at what the various events partners 

have to offer – and this ranges from high 

calibre motoring themed Waterman pens 

through designer Italian Jewellery to 

wine master classes and even a specially 

brewed Masters of Motoring Beer from 

craft brewers Monty’s. 

The non-stop action on-track at Castle 

Combe should be a sharp contrast to 

the serene surroundings of Bowood 

House & Gardens. The beautiful stately 

home will form an elegant backdrop to 

the collection of supercars, classics and 

competition machinery that is set to 

assemble there on Masters of Motoring’s 

second day. 

Chicane plays host to VIPs there as it 

also does at GBMS’ other four Signature 

events. These one-day events follow 

a similar format to day 2 of Masters of 

Motoring, with sports cars, supercars and 

classics and their owners meeting up to 

showcase their vehicles in the grounds of 

some of the UK’s other most renowned 

stately homes – in this case, Harewood 

House in Yorkshire, Chatsworth in the 

Peak District, and Arley Hall, in Cheshire 

and Kelmarsh Hall in Northamptonshire. 

At Bowood, as at all of the other Signature 

events GBMS has negotiated special 

entry deals for those who also want to 

tour the Stately Homes while taking in the 

automotive scenery! 

“Our Signature Shows have become the 

highlights of our event season, attracting

Suitable for 12V lead acid, AGM, EFB, 

gel and LiFePO4 lithium, as well as 

start/stop batteries, this multifunctional 

unit is able to test the battery, 

alternator, starter and vehicle earth, via 

its intuitive graphical interface. The results 

can then be printed using the built-in 

thermal printer, viewed on other devices 

by using the removable SD card, or even 

through the QR code. 

The battery analyser test simply carries 

out a battery health check and gives 

the user a reading detailing the state 

of the battery, whereas the alternator 

test, for both normal and smart 12V/24V 

alternators, will detect battery charging 

problems by checking if the alternator 

voltages fall within normal operating 

ranges. 

In a similar vein is the starter test 

for both 12V and 24V vehicles, which 

checks for potential starting problems by 

measuring battery voltage drop during 

engine cranking. The final test this battery 

analyser can undertake is the earth test to 

check that the earth connections between 

battery, engine and chassis are in good 

condition. 

Helpfully, there is memory storage for up 

to 80 results and it will also give an instant 

voltage reading, which will be displayed on 

the screen when powered up. 

The RBAG950 can also diagnose if a 

battery is faulty or not. As is known, if a 

battery falls below 12.5V to 12.4V, then 

battery will be in depletion mode and will 

have damaged the plates. So, even though 

the battery is not that low, the damage 

done is permanent. Yet, if the battery is 

at 12.5V, it can be charged and will work 

effectively, so there is a known tipping 

point for battery charging states. 

Therefore, Ring suggests that 

technicians should check every battery 

they get supplied to make sure it is above 

12.5V. 

To ensure this product can be used 

effectively, Ring has supplied it with a 

three metre cable, so that users can 

easily reach the battery wherever it may 

be in the vehicle. It also means that the 

technician can sit in the front seat, start 

the ignition and also be holding the units, 

therefore becoming a one person job. 

Previously, units needed someone to rev 

the engine while the other technician saw 

what happened on screen, which cost 

workshops valuable lost time.

Ben calls on automotive people 

to step up to new Big Walk challenge 

Automotive industry charity, Ben, is 

calling on automotive people to step 

up to its new Big Walk fundraising 

challenge on 8th September. As May is 

National Walking Month, the charity is 

launching Ben’s Big Walk, inviting members 

of the automotive family to take the first 

step and sign up to the challenge. 

The charity is calling on people from 

across the automotive industry to grab 

their walking shoes and get moving with 

friends, family and colleagues in Ben’s 

Big Walk. There are two locations so 

participants can choose to take part at 

the South Downs or Hadrian’s Wall and 

there are two challenges to choose from in 

terms of distance, a full marathon or half 

marathon. 

In the South Downs walk, participants 

will start just outside Brighton and will 

experience breathtaking views as well as 

testing, undulating terrain before finishing 

in Eastbourne. Participants of the Hadrian’s 

Wall trek will journey alongside one of the 

largest ancient monuments in Northern 

Europe in this world-famous historic 

landscape. Whichever the chosen route, 

it will be a tough but rewarding challenge 

with lots of support from like-minded 

members of the automotive family – all 

putting their best foot forward to help 

raise vital funds at a time when Ben is 

supporting more people than ever.
