The ongoing changes in the global political and strategic environment are putting increasing
pressure on the norms, institutions, and organizations of multilateralism. The United Nations,
as the central axis of the current multilateral system, is under strain. Simultaneously, UN
members must also review the guidelines for their involvement in various UN formats and
agendas to align their activities with the demands and priorities of 21st-century realities. It
should be noted that both processes – the transformation of the overall UN system and the
redefinition of one's own role within it – must be implemented together.
A discussion organized within the Season of Lithuania in France 2024 by the Eastern
Europe Studies Centre and Collège des Bernardins will address these challenges and explore
possible ways to adapt the UN to the evolving landscape. The discussion will also reconsider
the main strategic directions of the Baltics and France within the UN system, advocating for
strategic country interests and priorities through UN mechanisms.
