We see again some daring men from back then who made
the history of the race, and although the merciless weather
has scarred them in physique, they are always great
in spirit.
These days, unfortunately, the terrible challenges on the
Futa or Raticosa, the 250-mph duels along the Adriatica,
and the endless hours and incredible speeds in the rain
and fog no longer exist; however, these days there is a
1000 Miglia that is excellently placed in the panorama
of events at the highest level in terms of sports, historical
and spectacular content. In fact, the organizers, with great
insight, have been able to combine the immense heritage
of the 1000 Miglia with the desire to bring us back again
to the magical atmosphere of the “most beautiful race in
the World”.

I remember with sweet nostalgia these moments that,
in me as a teenager, created the dawn of a passion for
motor racing that nowadays still represents a very
important part of my life. I approached racing with a
Vespa, then a Rumi-powered kart and, at license age,
I began racing with the family’s Fiat 600D; since then
—with very lucky moments as well— I have had the
privilege of drive at least 30 cars in races: from the
600 to the Dagrada F. 850; from the Fiat 1600 spider
to the Ghepard F; from the Ritmo 1.5 gtr. 2 prepared
by Volta, to the 124 rally Abarth gr. 4; from the Osella
PA5/7/9 to the Ferrari 308 GTB gr. 4 prepared by Facetti,
Ferrari 355/360/430/458 in GT versions; from the three
Stratos gr.4 to the Stanguellini F.3 and the Lola F3000
Cosworth, etc. I not only faced not only defeats but
also victories that gratified me and had the pleasure
of achieving excellent results. And I have learned that
esteem, respect for opponents and modesty (as in our
high risk situations) are noble sentiments that I have
always nurtured and still do with great pleasure and
pride. 65 years of active motorsport lifetime: from Malegno-Borno
to the 24 Hours of Daytona, from Varano
to the Nurburgring; from Monza to Le Castellet and
the Italian and European uphill championship races.
402 races and 4 championships won lead to various
reflections; among many, this one appears to me to be
of good prominence as a racing car and for what significant
reasons it excited me, fascinated me, surprised
me at the incredible possibility that man had designed
a mechanical creature with a line that expressed only
beauty (Greeks defined beauty as “harmony of lines”):
