As an of 昀椀 cial appointedby Mayor Tommy Battle, I’m here to assisthim with all his duties, whatever those may be,wherever they may be needed.One of the things I most enjoy about this job is that it is differentevery single day. Much of my time is spent staying connected tothe community, our City departments and elected of 昀椀 cials. It’s myjob to look for problems, help solve them, and get the right peopleinvolved to address the issue. It’s not always that something isbroken and needs to be 昀椀 xed. In some cases, it's realizing there's anopportunity for some really good thing to emerge, and then gettingpeople engaged to leverage that opportunity. When that happens,it’s way more fun than solving problems.My leadership role in City Hall links back to what I did as anArmy of 昀椀 cer and Garrison Commander at Redstone Arsenal. A lotof the job is making decisions. You've got folks bringing an issue.You go through a sound decision-making process to make sure thestaff is following a sound decision-making process, then allocatingresources appropriately is a huge part of the job. Mayor Battle has structured his executive staffwith speci 昀椀 c areas of responsibility. He’s assigned me departmentsto oversee and supervise daily, and I spend a lot of time workingwith some great leaders. While the Mayor remains involved withall of his department heads, his job is extremely broad and demanding,and he doesn't need to manage the day-to-day details ofevery single thing going across the City.My particular focus is on departments engaged in routine publicservices. That includes Public Safety and Parks & Recreation aswell as employees engaged in the basic maintenance of our infrastructurelike Public Works and Landscape Management. Alsounder my purview are departments that focus on supporting internalmunicipal operations such as General Services, InformationTechnology Services and Human Resources. I provide oversightto these departments, meet with them regularly and make certainthey have what they need to accomplish their missions.A third area of responsibility is when the Mayor needs me to besomewhere. It may be an activity or event, ceremony, meetingwith an organization or providing senior representation from theCity. At City Hall, we value our role in supporting organizationsand businesses in our community and we work hard to be responsiveand stay engaged. This is a primary focus for the Mayor, buthe can't be everywhere and I am happy to step in to assist.As you can imagine, the City of Huntsville is constantly changing,evolving and growing.
