Sterling had “ just cooperated”.
This is a very simply way to view
this case, but it also true.
However, police operate in a
world where suspects do not
always cooperate and there are
policies and equipment designed
to assist and guide police
in these scenarios. The Police
Sergeant on scene has a primary
duty to ensure that these
protocols are followed. That did
not happen in this case and the
result was that a young man was
killed and a police supervisor
will likely forfeit his career and
possibly his freedom.
Since the blame for the tragic
results should be split between
Mr. Sterling and the Sergeant -
the best we can hope for is that
the Sergeant is prosecuted and
sentenced like Kim Potter - and
not like Derek Chauvin.
Fleeing from police officers
is incredibly dangerous and
greatly increases the odds that a
suspect will be harmed. Police
officers cannot force suspects to
be reasonable or decent. So, for
those who choose this dangerous
and selfish path and accept
the risk - have it your way.
