Ave Makke has a dreamlike job,<br />
she is surrounded not only by nice<br />
colleagues but also by an oasis of<br />
goods. The range of <strong>Tallink</strong> <strong>Silja</strong><br />
<strong>Line</strong>'s ship stores includes 1,400 different<br />
brands and tens of thousands<br />
of products. Some product selections change almost<br />
every two months so there is always something<br />
to discover on board.<br />
Please tell us about what you do at <strong>Tallink</strong>.<br />
I deal with many different tasks and topics every<br />
day. Since my area of responsibility includes sales<br />
and marketing of <strong>Tallink</strong> <strong>Silja</strong> <strong>Line</strong> ships' onboard<br />
stores, I am involved in all topics related to<br />
product assortment, pricing, campaign plans,<br />
preparation and maintenance of sales space, operation<br />
and development of sales systems, advertising<br />
and marketing, and of course also our passengers.<br />
Passenger feedback is very important to us.<br />
Our wish is for our product range to appeal to the<br />
countries of our immediate neighbors as well<br />
as those coming from further away, for example<br />
from Asia, America, Europe, etc.<br />
What do you like most about your job?<br />
I like working at <strong>Tallink</strong> and I really like my job,<br />
otherwise I wouldn't have been here for so long –<br />
I've worked at <strong>Tallink</strong> for 23 years, 19 years at<br />
<strong>Tallink</strong> Duty Free. Through these years, I have<br />
come across different work tasks and different<br />
people, different joys and obstacles. My work is<br />
very diverse, it involves a lot of communication<br />
and also a lot of time at my computer, there<br />
are numbers but also a lot of creativity.<br />
The pressure is always high and the work is<br />
always rewarding! And I enjoy that.<br />
What do you like to buy in stores?<br />
Since time is always limited and on land, I visit<br />
stores mainly to see what our competitors are<br />
doing, I still do most of my shopping on board. The<br />
first important product group would be chocolate!<br />
And of course, beauty products: perfumes and<br />
cosmetics, as well as fashion goods.<br />
How do you like the spring colour palette -<br />
pastels, white, linen tones, colour joy?<br />
I'm not afraid of colours. I wear what I like and<br />
don't really follow trends that much, but often<br />
I have found that what I wear and what I like is<br />
currently in fashion! I definitely wear white more<br />
than black and over the years have discovered<br />
that there is no colour that does not suit me.<br />
Blouses-skirts, as well as shorts, set the tone<br />
for women in the clothing selection.<br />
What is the perfect vacation outfit like?<br />
Holiday clothes must be comfortable and match<br />
the weather or the nature of the vacation, i.e.,<br />
what you are planning on doing: going on a<br />
bird tour or hiking in the mountains. Skiing<br />
or basking – choose the appropriate outfit.<br />
Which men's clothing items and accessories<br />
(glasses, belts, watches) are most popular<br />
in the ship's store?<br />
It is always much easier with men than it is with<br />

women. Men are very loyal shoppers. If their first<br />
purchase is successful, they will stick with it for a<br />
long time – whether it be the brand, model, cut or<br />
colour. Men are also more easily influenced while<br />
shopping because they often need help and don’t<br />
want to spend a lot of time in the store.<br />
Men's favorite brand of glasses is Rayban. Belts<br />
are often bought from the same brand as pants.<br />
For example, Tommy Hilfiger is definitely<br />
the most popular brand for both, clothes and<br />
accessories.<br />
What accessories do you prefer?<br />
My golden rule is: less is more, but accessories<br />
should be distinct. From our ship's selection, I like<br />
Coeur de Lion jewelry, and Marmara also has a<br />
good selection for different occasions. From bag<br />
brands, my favorites are Tommy Hilfiger and<br />
Coccinelle but sunglasses I choose according to<br />
the suitable model rather than brand.<br />
Do you have a favourite perfume?<br />
My favorite perfume that I always wear is Chanel<br />
Coco Mademoiselle but I also have a couple of<br />
perfumes that I wear when the mood strikes.<br />
Such more personal scents can be chosen for yourself<br />
from the Jo Malone selection. At the moment,<br />
my so-called extra scent is Jo Malone Vetiver &<br />
Golden Vanilla.<br />
Which household goods do you recommend<br />
to buy?<br />
Marimekko's products suit every home. You don't<br />
have to remake the entire home Marimekko style,<br />
even a small flowery detail for example in the<br />
kitchen, bathroom, kitchen drawer or on your feet<br />
(socks) goes a long way. I just recently got myself<br />
kitchen towels from the Marimekko Uniko line.<br />
What are the components of an ideal cruise?<br />
Definitely high spirits and emotions, pleasant<br />
travel companions, good food and drink and entertainment<br />
and, of course, emotional shopping -<br />
you don't even have to search, you just find!<br />
Impeccable service, perfect weather and a<br />
beautiful sea view are all part of what makes<br />
the experience unforgettable.<br />

The polo shirt has a century old history<br />
and is a well-established classic in our<br />
wardrobes. Many globally renowned<br />
brands have built their entire empires<br />
selling them and many men<br />
have built their entire<br />
careers wearing them.<br />
So what is the magical appeal of<br />
this shirt that makes it so<br />
popular?<br />
It is probably the fact<br />
that the polo shirt is a<br />
dressier option than a T-shirt and<br />
much easier to iron than a dress<br />
shirt. It’s a convenient solution to<br />
looking put together in a warmer<br />
season, giving off a neatly dressed<br />
vibe without even much effort.<br />
To really understand how the shirt<br />
became to be the staple it is today, we<br />
must take a brief journey back to the<br />
very beginning.<br />
It is believed that the earliest polo shirt<br />

The equestrian sport of polo,<br />
often played in high temperatures,<br />
required a lightweight<br />

colonised by Britain, the style was<br />

and took it with him to America. The Oxford<br />
Cotton Button Down was born and continues<br />
to be manufactured to this day, featuring the<br />
slogan The Original Polo Shirt on its label.<br />

THE RE-INVENTION OF THE POLO SHIRT...<br />
...as we know it today, took place in the mid-<br />
1920s by Mr René Lacoste, an enterprising<br />
French tennis player, nicknamed Crocodile<br />
for his tenacity. He had been looking for a<br />
comfortable alternative to the elegant yet a<br />
little starchy tennis attire of that day.<br />
Lacoste felt he could not play to the best<br />
of his ability in this restrictive attire, so he<br />
started wearing his self-designed jersey petite<br />
pique that was much more flexible and<br />
stretchy. The version of this garment that he<br />
wore at the 1926 US Open Championship<br />
was the predecessor of the modern polo<br />
shirt that we know today.<br />
In 1933 René Lacoste founded<br />
Lacoste, a fashion brand<br />
named after himself. He<br />
started selling his shirts to<br />
other tennis players and people<br />
who appreciated the comfort<br />

SIGHTS ON SUCCESS<br />
Before establishing a successful world<br />
renowned brand in his own name,<br />
Tommy Hilfiger had a few other less<br />
prosperous business ventures. He<br />
started his career customising<br />
bell-bottoms and selling candles, incense<br />
and clothing in his own store People’s Place<br />
in his home town of Elmira, NY. That business<br />
went under but it didn’t stop the young<br />
designer from learning from this first defeat<br />
and moving on. He began to work mostly<br />
freelance <strong>until</strong> in 1984 he was contacted by<br />
Mohan Murjani, an established entrepreneur<br />
in the textile industry.<br />
Murjani was looking for a designer for a<br />
new sportswear line and Hilfiger caught his<br />
eye. In an interview from 2020, the designer<br />
recollects: "He asked me what I was up to<br />
these days, and I told him I was going to<br />
work for Calvin Klein as the designer of his<br />
jeanswear/sport division. And that’s when<br />
he suggested for us to start the Tommy<br />
Hilfiger brand together." Murjani had the<br />
idea to reinvent the preppy look, (dominated<br />
by Polo Ralph Lauren at the time), to appeal<br />
to a younger audience. The first Tommy<br />
Hilfiger collection made its debut promptly<br />
in the fall of 1985. The advertising campaign<br />
for the collection was rather unexpected and<br />
special since no ads actually showed clothes.<br />

in the vibrant college town of New Haven,<br />
Connecticut, GANT has inspired the world<br />

The GANT story began with the dream of making the<br />
perfect shirt. GANT reinvented the classic by offering<br />
shirts in new colors, stripes, madras checks, and prints,<br />

A SYMBOL OF JOY Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, believed that the true essence of real flowers couldn't<br />
be faithfully captured in print, which is why floral prints were excluded from Marimekko collections. Maija Isola responded by<br />
creating a complete series of graphic, pop-art-inspired floral abstractions. Among them was Unikko. Continuously printed since<br />
its launch, Unikko is today a powerful emblem of joy and creativity, seamlessly integrated into Marimekko's design identity.<br />
MEET MAIJA ISOLA Maija Isola's (1927–2001) career as a fabric designer began in 1949 at Marimekko's<br />
predecessor, Printex, vand lasted 38 years. During that time, she designed more than 500 patterns for Marimekko. She lived an<br />
unconventional life for her time, painting what she encountered when traveling across Europe, North Africa, and America. On<br />
these trips, many of her patterns and colors were born. Maija often worked in the evenings, sitting on the floor, and painted the<br />
original artwork across the entire width of a canvas.<br />

The two new characters in this year’s Moomin Arabia Classics<br />
collection have opposite approaches to life: Excitable Sniff dreams of<br />
fame and fortune; the philosophical Muskrat thinks all fuss and excess<br />
is useless. Sniff is a familiar face in the collection, The Muskrat<br />
appears in Moomin tableware for the first time.<br />
THE LONG-AWAITED MUSKRAT<br />

The solemn philosopher The<br />
Muskrat is a brand-new character<br />
in the Classics collection and in<br />
all Moomin Arabia tableware.<br />
The Moomin fans have been hoping<br />
for items with the moustached<br />
rodent-like fellow for a long time.<br />
In Jansson’s stories, the Muskrat<br />
appears as a solemn old fellow<br />
who likes to spend his time in<br />
peace and quiet, reading books<br />
and pondering life’s big questions.<br />
He is not easily bothered about<br />
anything, and his views come<br />
out as somewhat existentialist.<br />
His approach to life is well<br />
expressed in his lines in Finn<br />

The Muskrat’s philosophy is tellingly<br />

Sniff is a familiar face in the<br />
Classics collection, and this year’s<br />
dish set is the third one. Unlike the<br />
Muskrat, Sniff approaches life with<br />
endless enthusiasm. He’s one of<br />
Moomintroll’s best friends, like a<br />
little brother, and eager to participate<br />
in everything the Moomins<br />
do, although not favourably in<br />
anything dangerous.<br />

Where The Muskrat considers<br />
almost everything useless, Sniff is<br />
a big dreamer who desires anything<br />
valuable and all that glitters.<br />
He’s always trying to come<br />

Sniff is offering the elixir to a turtle<br />
who’s destined to turn into a<br />
bullet train. The dishes also show<br />
Sniff standing on a beach at sunset<br />
– dreaming of fame and fortune,<br />
of course. Next to Sniff,<br />
there’s a little character called<br />
Shadow. He is a helpful creature<br />
who, as his name suggests,<br />
follows Sniff and Moomintroll<br />

Safe and familiar – Sauna aesthetics are minimalistic and natural<br />
Natural, dim and minimalistic. This is how Laura Seesmeri,<br />
postdoctoral researcher at the University of Turku,<br />
describes sauna aesthetics. In her doctoral thesis ‘Sauno<br />
itsellesi menneisyys’, Seesmeri has studied sauna aesthetics<br />
as part of the cultural heritage of sauna.<br />
– There are two aspects to sauna as a space: what it is<br />
like as a place and what it is like as an experience, Laura<br />
Seesmeri says. Seesmeri points out that sauna is a<br />
unique aesthetic space in Finnish homes, as it is a space<br />
that has only one purpose – sauna bathing.<br />
– In everyday language, aesthetics often refers only to<br />
beauty and appearance, but the experiential aspect of<br />
spaces is also important, especially in relation to sauna.<br />
As material for her doctoral thesis, Laura Seesmeri used<br />
both marketing material from sauna heater manufacturers<br />
and the Finnish Literature Society’s collections of oral<br />
history data.<br />
– Especially the stories about sauna in the oral history<br />
data described sauna as an experience. Most of the<br />
stories in the data were very personal. The stories emphasized<br />
a certain sense of connection between the self<br />
and the universe as they reflected on the significance of<br />
sauna.<br />

Sauna is a place for relaxation<br />
Sauna aesthetics support the idea of sauna as a place<br />
for relaxation. According to Laura Seesmeri, saunas are<br />
minimalistic, calm and dim.<br />
– The space is minimalistic and unsurprising. Although<br />
sauna bathing is a multi-sensory experience, visually<br />
saunas are very dim, and the sense of sight is not<br />
emphasized.<br />
According to the researcher, sauna as an aesthetic<br />
space has remained very much the same over the years.<br />
Although there are changing trends in sauna interiors, in<br />
certain ways they remain natural and unpretentious.<br />
– Of course, saunas have seen various trends as a<br />
space. At one point, very dark, nearly black saunas were<br />
popular, followed by light, almost spa-like saunas. But<br />
even in these trends, the basics, such as wood panels as<br />
a wall material, have persisted. We have not seen lavishly<br />
decorated saunas or e.g., saunas with scenic wallpaper,<br />
Seesmeri explains.<br />

Security in permanence<br />
Laura Seesmeri believes that sauna gives Finns a certain<br />
sense of security. This feeling is reinforced by the<br />
elements associated with sauna: its permanence and<br />
closeness to nature.<br />
– Most Finns have memories and experiences of a<br />
summer sauna by the water. This same experience is<br />
then sought in all saunas – perhaps this is why all our<br />
saunas look quite similar.<br />
– Scents are also a powerful part of the sauna experience.<br />
As sauna whisks are rarely used in home saunas<br />
anymore, the connection with and scent of nature is simulated<br />
with various sauna scents. The scent of a birch<br />
whisk or warm tar gives us a sense of connection with<br />
nature.<br />
The soundscape of saunas has also remained unchanged.<br />
– The same hissing sound of water hitting the sauna<br />
stones can be heard in both a wood-fired cottage sauna<br />
and an electric sauna in an apartment building, says<br />
Seesmeri.<br />
–The sauna is a quiet place. In there, it is the sounds<br />
of the sauna itself that people focus on, she continues.<br />
