#148 • MAY 31 TO JUN 21, 2024 The Word on the Street The Public Library’s Summer Reading Challenge – for kids, teens, and adults – will begin on Wed Jun 19. haddonfield.today | 3 If you were to re-read a favorite book from your childhood, which book would you choose? And why? “I grew up in Lebanon,” says ASSAD KHOURY of Cherry Hill. “Reading about the adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn gave me insight to one aspect of life in America, a desire to learn more about the country, and eventually to live here.” MICHELE DiGIROLAMO of Haddonfield says she “spent many a lazy afternoon” in her bedroom reading Nancy Drew mysteries. “I devoured those books,” she says. CARLA CORNICK didn’t hesitate: ‘Charlotte’s Web’! “I don’t like spiders,” she says, “but it impressed me that a bunch of misfits learned that when one of them won, they all won.” JOHN BURMASTER of Haddonfield says that “‘McElligot’s Pool’ – an early work of Dr. Seuss – “taught me that I could imagine anything.” John says, “I believed it then and I still do.” Haddonfield’s BILL LANE confesses that he was not a good reader but was “enthralled” by the Hardy Boys and their adventures. “I would put aside part of my allowance to be sure I had enough to buy the next book, as soon as it came out.” MADELINE GRALISH of Haddonfield would re-read ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ by Madeleine L’Engle. “It captured my imagination because it provides the reader with a portal into a different dimension.”
