Good afternoon and welcome to Broadwood Stadium,
Cumbernauld for today’s Season 2023–24 Clydebuilt
Home Improvements Scottish Junior Cup Final between
Arthurlie FC and Darvel FC.
It is a great honour for myself, on behalf
of the Association to welcome the Players,
Management and Committees of both
great Clubs, but more importantly to you,
the supporters from Barrhead and Darvel
today and hope this will provide an
exciting conclusion to the Season for all.
I would like to thank our sponsor of this
years’ tournament, Clydebuilt Home
Improvements and to Only Sport who
sponsor this season's Team of the Round
for their continued financial support of the
competition this season. This has allowed
the Scottish Junior Football Association to
provide the largest prize money and
increased incentives to the Trophy’s
competitors in all of Scottish Non-League
Football.
The tournament continues to be enhanced
by BBC Alba who will again provide the
live television coverage to the footballing
nation for those unable to attend in
person today and we are now in the
second year of our five deal with our
media hosts to continue and strengthen
our partnership with them.
The Scottish Junior FA would also thank
North Lanarkshire Council and N.L. Active
for their help in organising and providing
the host venue for today’s Final as we also
enter the second year of our venue
partnership and to the many others who
have contributed to the tournament.
On a personal note, I would like to express
my appreciation to Alex McDowall our
Chief Operating Officer, our Assistant
Secretary Kennie Young and John Fyfe,
Treasurer, our administration staff and the
Management Committee of the Scottish
Junior Football Association in getting us to
this stage of the Competition successfully.
to bring the National Trophy to the Irvine
Valley for the first time, the best of luck
this afternoon and hope for a thrilling and
sporting match from both sides.
As the competition enters its 138 th Year
being the 5th Oldest National Trophy in
the World, the competition continues to
retain its historic significance for the
communities in Scotland with a
contemporary financial benefit for the
Clubs participating.
“Enjoy the game!”

I wish both sides Arthurlie FC, looking to
win their 3rd Scottish Junior Cup for the
Barrhead side and to Darvel, as they aim
A very warm welcome to Broadwood Stadium to what is
the 136th Scottish Junior Cup Final.
The road to the Final of the fourth oldest
cup still played for in world football started
back in August for 114 clubs and reaches it’s
climax this afternoon with Darvel and
Arthurlie.
The added reward for today’s winners is a
place in next season’s Scottish Cup along
with our SFA licenced clubs. Everyone
watched Darvel on TV as they beat Aberdeen
a couple of seasons ago, they’ll be dreaming
of another chance next season & Arthurlie
will be dreaming of their first visit into the
senior Scottish Cup competition.
Football at our level is all about the
communities, and it’s great to see the
communities of Barrhead and the Irvine
valley getting right behind their clubs in
their plans for this final. Open days, parties,
bunting in each town centres and big sendoffs
for the buses heading to Broadwood is
just what we want to be seeing. Well done
to the organisers.
Need to thank a number of people for their
help this season.
The match sponsors today are Clydebuilt
Home Improvements, and we thank them for
their ongoing support for another year. Their
commitment to the association has been
very gratefully received in the last few
seasons and we hope they enjoy the day as
our guests again.
I would also like to thank OnlySport for their
support once again. As well as their financial
support, their sponsorship of the exit draw
in every round of the Cup benefits the teams
directly to the tune of £500 each and is very
much appreciated by the recipients.
Indigo Verified Communications are a new
sponsor of the competition this year, but
they are a business and people that I know
well. They are a great support to football at
our level and hopefully this season is just
the start of a fruitful partnership.
Thanks also go to BBC Alba who not only
financially contribute to the competition but
offers those unable to attend the ability to
watch at home, keeping the Scottish Junior
Cup Final that bit more special.
We have a new Charity Partner in Libby &
her team at Back Onside, who do some
fantastic work with players and clubs all
across Scottish football. A wonderful charity
that deserves far more support and funding
than it currently gets.
Thanks go to the team at Broadwood for
helping us make our first final here last year
such a success, and for the smooth planning
of this year’s event. North Lanarkshire
Council deserve a lot of credit for
acknowledging everyone’s preference in a
Sunday afternoon final & accommodating the
dates.
It would be remiss of me not to mention our
own committee of President Bobby
MacNamara, Vice-President Clark Nicol and
Assistant Secretary Kennie Young who have
ensured the smooth running of the
competition. I would also like to thank John
Reilly and Chris Auton for all their continued
help.
Finally, I just want to wish both teams,
Darvel and Arthurlie, all the very best on
Sunday. Look forward to it being a great day
at Broadwood and everybody having an
enjoyable final.
“Thanks to everyone
for your continued
support, all the best
guys”

Darvel Football Club!
A BRIEF HISTORY
Darvel Football Club, also known as “The Vale”, was
formed in 1889. Their club colours are royal blue and
their change colours are all black.
Recreation Park has been the home of Darvel FC
since their inauguration in 1889 and is situated at the
foot of Irvinebank Road, in the centre of Darvel.
There used to be a very successful social club at the
ground, which was sadly demolished a number of
years ago. The facilities at the ground have been
improved beyond all recognition since John Gall took
over as Chairman, and as well as radical pitch work
they can now boast first class dressing rooms, the
Kier White Suite, a 60 capacity seated main stand, a
100 capacity covered enclosure, a disabled
enclosure, a pie hut (where you can buy the famous
Darvel announced in February 2019 that Colville Park
manager Michael Kennedy would be the new manager
for the season 2019–20. In only his first season in
charge, Darvel and Blantyre Victoria were declared
joint-winners of the West Region Championship in
2019–20, after the season was prematurely halted by
the COVID-19 pandemic.
Darvel went one better the following season, as they
were crowned Premier Division Champions in 2021-22
before missing out in the Lowland League play-offs
against a strong Tranent side. A West of Scotland Cup
win in April 2024 keeps the remarkable run going.

1929 after financial difficulties forced them to resign
their membership of the Scottish Football League.
Whilst a senior club, they reached the Scottish Cup
quarter-finals on three successive seasons. Losing out
to Kilmarnock & Celtic twice.
The high point of their 150 year history arrived in
1937 when they lifted their first Scottish Junior Cup,
defeating Kirkintilloch Rob Roy 5-1 in front of a
crowd of 23,000 at Celtic Park. They repeated their
success in 1998 with a comprehensive 4-0 win over
derby rivals Pollok at Fir Park, thanks to goals from
Mark McLaughlin, Johnny Millar, Steve Convery and
Steven Nugent.
A very warm welcome to Arthurlie!
A BRIEF HISTORY
Arthurlie Football Club, also known as “The ‘Lie”,
was formed in 1874, which makes it amongst the 5
oldest clubs in Scotland. Their club colours are blue
and white stripes and their change colours are red
and yellow stripes, which are the colours of Barrhead
Youth Football Club to reflect their close working
relationship.
The Barrhead boys had been one of the pace-setters
in the early 2000s, having won the inaugural Super
League First Division and spending a record run of 15
unbroken seasons in the top flight before relegation
in 2018.
Joining the new West of Scotland Football League era
in 2020, Andy McFadyen & Craig Palmer led the club
to a remarkable “Invincible” season where they won
promotion back to the Premier Division in an
undefeated campaign.
The adventure that began in 1874 continues…
The ‘Lie play at Dunterlie Park in the heart of
Barrhead and have done since 1919, having moved
from the original Dunterlie Park which had been their
home since 1906. Their record attendance at
Dunterlie is 10,500, which came in a Scottish Junior
Cup tie in March 1939 against Cambuslang Rangers.

THE GAFFER
Colin Reilly has been Manager at Dunterlie since
March 2023, after moving to Barrhead after a
successful stint at Vale of Clyde. He led a charge
to safety at the end of his first season in charge
and a Scottish Junior Cup Final in his second only
adds to an impressive C.V. A disappointing
relegation this season is the only negative, but
the quality of football played this season has
been a credit to the club & optimism reigns for
their 1st Division campaign.
Originally a midfielder with Dundee United and
Greenock Morton in his youth, Colin began his
management career in Dubai.

RYAN LEE
ROSS ANDERSON
(MATCH REFEREE) (ASSISTANT REFEREE 1)
Date of birth: 20 September
1996
Referee since: 2013
Date admitted to Scottish FA
list: 2016
What influenced you to
become a referee? A former
teacher of mine approached
me at school one day and
asked me if I fancied giving
refereeing ago. I was quite
surprised as like most 16 year
olds who grew up playing
football, refereeing was
never much of a thought for
me. So I then went along to
the introductory referee class
at Dalkeith Campus for 6
consecutive Sundays and I
have never looked back since.
I absolutely love refereeing.
What is your biggest
refereeing achievement to
date? When I started out
refereeing, achieving
Category 1 status as a referee
was what I’ve worked really
hard towards and I am
absolutely delighted to be a
Category 1 match official.
However, the biggest
achievement of my career to
date is undoubtedly today.
Just like players, we give
everything in our games each
week to hopefully be involved
in cup finals at the end of the
season. But to be involved
today, as referee, in the
Scottish Junior Cup Final is a
massive honour and privilege
and one I am really looking
forward to.
If you could referee a match
between any two teams and
at any venue, which teams
and where? You can never
say never in football but in
the future I would love to
referee an Old Firm derby in
the Scottish Cup Final. And as
much as I think Hampden
Park is great, and the perfect
place for this game, a one off
at the Santiago Bernabéu
wouldn’t hurt anyone.
What is the best thing about
being a referee? I would say
the best thing about being a
referee is creating memories
that will last forever. My
Grandpa, who sadly passed
away unexpectedly in 2018,
was my biggest supporter and
he used to travel with me to
all of my matches on a
Saturday. The memories I’ve
made with my Grandpa will
last forever and he always
said that he would hopefully
still be around to see me at
Category 1. I hope he’s
watching down on me today
with a smile and enjoys the
game.
What is your funniest
moment as a referee?
My funniest moment as a
referee has to be when I was
refereeing in Dunbar a
number of years ago, without
any assistant referees, and a
player who miskicked the ball
at full force, hit me square in
a place you don’t want to be
hit. I fell to the ground, let
out a “ooohhhh” as I
struggled to breathe, and
thought I was going to be
sick, which was met with a
few laughs from the crowd
and also a few “get it up ye”
chants. I struggled to find this
funny at the time as anyone
who knows what this is like
well…….just knows. But after
a few minutes I saw the funny
side and had a good laugh
about it after the match with
players and spectators. You
can’t ever take yourself too
seriously.
Date of birth: 15th May 1993
Referee since: 2012
Date admitted to Scottish FA
list: 2015
What influenced you to
become a referee? The high
school I attended offered the
course as a subject in 6 th
year. All my friends were
doing the course and I didn’t
want to miss out. After my
first game I never looked
back.
What has been your most
memorable match as a
referee so far? I was an
assistant referee during a
Motherwell v Sligo Rovers Cup
game at Fir Park. Growing up
in Motherwell, it was always a
dream to get on the Fir Park
turf and being on the pitch in
such a competitive game with
friends and family in the
stand was a great experience.
What is your biggest
refereeing achievement to
date? I was the Assistant
Referee at the Scottish Youth
Cup in 2014.
If you could referee a match
between any two teams and
at any venue, which teams
and where? The Milan derby
at the San Siro. The
atmosphere would be
electric.
What is the best thing about
being a referee? Being
involved in football at a much
higher level then I would have
ever reached as a player.
Do you have any hobbies?
Refereeing is my main hobby.
It takes up takes up a lot of
my time with training, games
and teaching the new
entrants classes. I have a
young family so spend all the
spare time I have with them.
KEVIN BUCHANAN
(ASSISTANT REFEREE 2)
SEAN MURDOCH
(4th OFFICIAL)
Date of birth: 18 September
1983
Referee since: 2018
Date admitted to Scottish FA
list: 27th January 2022
What influenced you to
become a referee? I stopped
playing at 28 years old after
an injury warning up in a
Scottish Junior Cup game and
always wanted to get back
into Football. I tried playing
for a short time after the
injury but never enjoyed it
the same. Then in 2018, a
friend who I was working with
at the time asked if I wanted
to do the introductory course
and I have honestly never
looked back. I honestly wish I
had done it earlier.
What has been your most
memorable match as a
referee so far? It may sound
like a cliche, I enjoy every
game. However, my first
matches at every new ‘level’
will always be memorable for
personal reasons. My first
championship game at
Dunfermline is definitely one.
What is your biggest
refereeing achievement to
date? Being appointed to a
National Final today is
special.
It has also been great
progressing though the
Categories, however, being
promoted to Specialist
Assistant Referee
(Development) has to be my
biggest to date.
If you could referee a match
between any two teams and
at any venue, which teams
and where? Outwith Scotland
it would have to be Boca
Juniors v River Plate at La
Bombonera.
Who has been the best
player you have been on the
park with? I honestly couldn’t
pick one there are a lot of
very good players throughout
the leagues from the
Championship to the Juniors.
Do you have any hobbies?
Football and spending time
with my wife Shelley and 2
kids Chelsea and Charlie.
Who is the worst dressed
referee you know?
A few would definitely say
me, however, not the worst
dressed but the one with the
worst haircuts by a mile is
Harry Bruce from Moray and
Banff. He had a mullet for a
national final!
Which referee takes the
longest to get ready?
I actually have no Idea, which
probably means me!!
Which referee has the worst
banter?
Another referee from the
Moray and Banff association,
Alan Proctor, it’s beyond
horrendous.
What is your funniest
moment as a referee?
Trying to jump over and out
of the way of a ball being
played on the ground out of
defence and standing on top
of it and falling over.
Date of birth: 31st July 1986
Referee since: 2007
Date admitted to Scottish FA
list: 2019
What influenced you to
become a referee? I have
played football full time since
16 and ambition was always
to enter refereeing.
What has been your most
memorable match as a
referee so far? Scottish
Youth Cup Final. Rangers v
Celtic. Game finished 6-5
AET. Great game to be a part
of.
What is your biggest
refereeing achievement to
date? Getting to Category 1.
If you could referee a match
between any two teams and
at any venue, which teams
and where? I would love to
try a fixture abroad. River
Plate v Boca!
Who has been the best
player you have been on the
park with? I played against
Wayne Rooney when I was
still playing. This was in his
peak time.
What is the best thing about
being a referee? Going to
new venues. Meeting new
friends and officials. Being
involved in games. I
personally love every aspect
of it.
Do you have any hobbies?
Any time outside refereeing
and training to keep fit and
strong is spent with my wife
and 2 kids.
Who is the worst dressed
referee you know? Colin
Steven.
Which referee takes the
longest to get ready? Jamie
Wilkie’s hair takes him
around 45 minutes each day.
Which Referee has the worst
banter? Jamie Wilkie.
What is your funniest
moment as a referee? When I
refereed amateur football. I
had someone score and he
stripped every part of his
clothing off.
