Building STEM Identity
THE FLEET SCIENCE CENTER’S COMMITMENT
TO EMPOWERING SAN DIEGO COUNTY
Isalys Quiñonesis an Olympic athlete and
Team Captain for the Puerto Rico Women’s
National Basketball Team. She is also an
environmental engineer and an alum of
the Fleet’s BE WiSE (Better Education for
Women in Science and Engineering) program.
In a world filled with scientific breakthroughs
and technological marvels, the importance of
instilling a STEM identity in our youth cannot
be overstated. At the heart of this vibrant pursuit
is the Fleet Science Center, a hub of knowledge
and exploration in San Diego County. With
unwavering dedication, the Fleet connects people
from all walks of life to the power of science, fostering a
community where everyone can thrive in the realms of
science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
The story of Isalys Quiñones beautifully illustrates the
magic of the Fleet’s initiatives. From her childhood
visits to the Center to her participation in the BE WiSE
program, Isalys’s journey is a testament to the life-altering
power of these formative experiences. Isalys mentioned
in a speech given at this year’s annual gala at the Fleet,
“There was nothing more fun than playing with all the
exhibits - and I guess learning a bit too!” These moments
not only shaped her aspirations but also paved her path
to becoming a talented engineer.
8 GBSAN.COM | JUNE 2024

Isalys Quinones with
Congressman Scott Peters
and Fleet CEO Steve Snyder
For Isalys, the Fleet was never
just a place to visit; it was a
portal to endless possibilities.
Its hands-on exhibits,
interactive workshops, and
captivating programs sparked
a deep-seated passion for
science and engineering,
supporting her dreams every
step of the way. Looking
back, Isalys credits the Fleet
with a significant role in her
professional and personal
growth.
But Isalys’s inspiring story is
just the beginning. The Fleet
Science Center’s mission to
cultivate STEM identities is about lighting up entire
communities with the spirit of discovery and innovation.
They ensure that children from diverse backgrounds can
immerse themselves in learning environments where
their dreams have no bounds. “Kids need programs
like these and locations like the Fleet to experience the
world of science and engineering,” added Isalys. “If it
was not for the Fleet, my first introduction to marine
Isalys with her mother
and fellow scientist and
Fleet volunteer Frances
solve real-world problems.
biology, computer science
and engineering would have
been when I got to college
and began taking engineering
courses.”
As we move forward in an era
where understanding STEM
is more crucial than ever,
the contributions of places
like the Fleet Science Center
become even more critical.
They are not just teaching
facts; they are nurturing
curious minds, encouraging
critical thinking and inquiry,
and equipping future
generations with the tools to
The Fleet’s ongoing efforts to inspire and engage the
community highlight the profound impact that science
can have in enriching lives. Their commitment to
building STEM identities is a beacon of hope, promising
a brighter future where every young dreamer can aim
high and achieve even higher.
Education
Cristo Rey San Diego
High School
BREAKING BARRIERS, TRANSFORMING LIVES
Cristo Rey San Diego High School
(CRSD) serves as a beacon of hope
in an underserved community,
empowering
economically
disadvantaged
youth to thrive as
resilient individuals of faith, purpose,
and service. As the 37th member of
the Cristo Rey Network spanning 24
states, it currently hosts 180 students
with plans to expand to 400. Beyond
a non-profit educational institution,
Cristo Rey San Diego merges a rigorous college
preparatory curriculum with hands-on Corporate
Work experience grounded in Catholic values.
In August 2020, amid the uncertainties of the
pandemic, they welcomed their inaugural class of 60
freshmen, driven by the conviction that its mission
18 GBSAN.COM | JUNE 2024
“95% of seniors
have received
offers from 47
prestigious fouryear
universities.”
could not wait. Esteemed leader Dr. Stephen Ferruolo,
Chairman & Former Dean of the USD School of Law,
affirms its significance, sharing with GB Magazine,
“It is a win-win for San Diego and its
business community!”
Operating independently of
government or church funding, CRSD
equips first-generation college-bound
students with essential social and life
skills through their Corporate Work
Study Program. Students work one
day a week in entry-level professional
roles in over 40 organizations, ranging
from law firms to real estate companies, covering half of
their tuition expenses. Impressively, over 95% of their
students receive positive ratings from their employers.
In this year’s inaugural graduating class, also an
outstanding 95% of seniors have received offers from 47

prestigious four-year
universities, including
the University of San
Diego, UCSD, UCLA,
Pomona College, and
Emory University.
Senior Cavin
Nguyen shared,
“CRSD has taught
me the importance
of growth. This
mindset has taught
me not to be afraid
to make mistakes
in my academic
and professional
life.” Cavin has
yet to commit to a
school, but has been
accepted to SDSU,
USD, and LMU!
Christian Kampfl,
President of CRSD added,
“We are immensely proud
of our founding seniors
for their outstanding
accomplishments and
contributions to our
school community. Their
graduation signifies not
only the culmination of
their academic journeys
but also the beginning
of a new chapter for
our school. They have
set a high standard of
excellence and leadership,
and we do not doubt
that they will continue
to excel in all their future
endeavors.”
primeros 60 alumnos, sabiendo
que sus convicciones no podían
esperar y debían poner manos a
Corporate Work Study.
Outreach
Mt. Soledad
National Veterans Memorial
HONORING SACRIFICE AND INSPIRING EDUCATION
Nestled atop the scenic Mt. Soledad
in La Jolla lies a poignant tribute to
the nation’s heroes: the Mt. Soledad
National Veterans Memorial.
Beyond its solemn monuments
and panoramic views of the Pacific
Ocean, the memorial stands as a
testament to the sacrifices made by generations of
servicemen and women. Yet, it is not merely a static
monument frozen in time; it serves as a dynamic hub
of education and remembrance, reaching out to inspire
future generations.
The origins of the Mt. Soledad Memorial trace back to
the early 1950s when a wooden cross was erected as
a memorial to Korean War veterans. Over the years,
it evolved into a symbol of honor for veterans from
all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces and today it
continues to provide a place for inspiration, solace,
and learning.
One of the most remarkable facets of the Mt. Soledad
National Veterans Memorial is its commitment to
sharing the stories of the veterans who are adorned
on its walls. The memorial recently introduced a
formal educational outreach program for school aged
children and youth groups. Partnering with esteemed
organizations like the Walter Munk Foundation for the
Oceans, the memorial has spearheaded initiatives to
engage and educate young minds. The Walter Munk
Foundation, named after the renowned oceanographer
and scientific pioneer, shares a vision of environmental
stewardship and education, making it a natural partner
for the memorial’s endeavors.
One such
initiative was
the recent
collaboration
between the
Mt. Soledad
Memorial and
the Elementary
Institute of
Science of San
Diego. In a
groundbreaking
educational
endeavor, eighty
students from
the institute
were invited to
the summit of
Mt. Soledad for
an immersive
learning
experience.
Students delved
into a diverse
array of topics,
ranging from
military history
to marine
science and the
surrounding
topography.
The partnership
facilitated a multifaceted educational program.
Students had the opportunity to explore the rich
history of the memorial, learning about the courageous
men and women who served their country with
valor. Guided tours led them through the memorial’s
monuments, each one a poignant reminder of the
sacrifices made in the defense of freedom.
Central to the educational experience was the message
of stewardship and service embodied by both the Mt.
Soledad Memorial and the Walter Munk Foundation
for the Oceans. As students explored the memorial’s
grounds and learned about the challenges facing our
oceans, they were encouraged to reflect on their role as
responsible citizens and stewards of the environment.
It was a powerful
reminder that
honoring the
sacrifices of the
past goes hand
in hand with
safeguarding
the future for
generations to
come.
The Mt. Soledad
National
Veterans
Memorial stands
as a beacon of
remembrance
and
education,
inspiring
visitors to
honor the
legacy of
America’s
veterans while
empowering
future
generations
with
knowledge
and
awareness.
Through partnerships the memorial continues to
enrich the lives of students and visitors alike, ensuring
that the spirit of service and sacrifice endures for years
to come.
stories, emotions and the experiences that make us human, all through the
power of music,” Barnatan shared with GB Magazine. “With an incredible
lineup of artists from around the world, we are diving straight into stories
that cover everything life throws at us - be it resilience, heartbreak, love,
scandal, or victory.”
The festival will host some of the finest musicians and performance artists
Following his widely acclaimed debut at SummerFest last year, British
composer Thomas Adès comes back as the composer-in-residence.
Finally, building on the success of their “Counterpoint”
program, pianist Conrad Tao pairs with dancer Caleb Teicher
músicos del mundo
durante cuatro semanas
El director musical Inon
Barnatan regresa por sexta
titulado “Inside Stories”.
“El festival de este año
se convierte en una
increíblemente colorida
tela donde cobran vida
las historias, emociones y
experiencias que nos hacen
humanos, todo gracias
al poder de la música”
le comenta a la revista
GB Barnatán. “Con un
impresionante elenco de
artistas provenientes de todo
el mundo nos zambullimos
la vida, sea la resiliencia, los
corazones rotos, el amor, el
escándalo o la victoria”.
El festival va a albergar
a algunos de los más
renombrados artistas
y músicos del mundo,
incluyendo los muy
esperados debuts de: el
grupo vocal VOCES8, el
Morlot.
Finalmente, a partir
town of Jacumba Hot Springs is
ready to make some new history.
Jeff Osborne looked out at the
crowd gathered in the desert to
hear him speak on a sun-splashed
spring day, and made a remarkable statement: “I will
spend the rest of my life devoted to this town and
restoration.” All the evidence suggests he means it.
Tiny Jacumba Hot Springs (population 541), 71 miles
east of San Diego, is undergoing a slow but steady
transformation as Jeff and his business partners
Melissa Strukel and Corbin Winters unfailingly invest
their time, money, and heart in the belief that there is
something magical, and eventually profitable, in this
historic old town.
A bustling tourist destination in the 1920s, Jacumba
was home to more than five thousand residents. On
its main street were seven gas stations, residential
apartments, lodging for weary motorists, and a hotel
and bath house with water piped in directly from the
town’s artesian well. In its healing waters, the stars of
radio and film are said to have found blessed retreat.
But it all unraveled as Interstate 8 passed by to the
north and visitors favored other resorts like Palm
Springs. The bath house was destroyed by fire and the
old luxury hotel, the centerpiece of the town, burned
to the ground in 1983.
Over more recent years, a succession of dreamers and
entrepreneurs have imagined what Jacumba might
become, but its weary downtown never changed
much. The burned-out ruins of the town’s glory days
remain even yet.
Things do feel
different now.
Jacumba’s new
owners are
sprucing up
abandoned
storefronts
adjacent to a new
and revitalized
hotel and spa that
is strikingly elegant
and has become
the social
center of town.
The once reedy
and overgrown
Lake Jacumba
is clear and
clean and
inviting.
Beyond that,
Jacumba’s new
owners see
everything in a
different light.
To them, the
burned-out
shell of the old
bath house is
a mood venue for
frequent candlelit
concerts. The town is
windy, dusty, hot…
and beautiful. They
look at its very harsh
remoteness with real
affection. “We are
out on the edge of
everything. The
edge of a county,
the edge of the
Sonoran Desert,
and the edge of a
mountain range,”
Melissa Strukel
told the crowd.
She and her
partners have
made one thing
clear. They are in
this for reasons beyond
the financial. They have
made this place their
home. “I am so grateful
to be able to raise my
son here,” Corbin
Winters shared. The
crowd applauded. The
wind blew a little dust
past the old buildings
downtown. And at last,
Jacumba Hot Springs
felt new again.
Gorillas are beautiful, resilient animals. But
poaching and habitat destruction have pushed
their populations to the brink of extinction.
Dian Fossey knew that gorillas would need
the community’s help to survive. Today, the
Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund is dedicated to continuing and
expanding Dian’s work. A reception was hosted in La Jolla
Education
Southwestern
Community College
Everyone has been touched
by community college,
whether they are aware of it
or not.
Needed medical attention?
The paramedic, dental
technician, or nurse
likely received their education at a
community college. Had your car
repaired? The mechanic likely studied at a community
college. Enjoyed a musical or theater performance?
The actors, singers, and dancers likely started their
training at a community college.
As the only establishment of higher learning in the
54 GBSAN.COM | JUNE 2024
“Southwestern
students have
found the
inspiration to
exceed their own
expectations.”
south region of San Diego County,
Southwestern Community College is
a vital pillar within the community
focused on educating, training, and
providing opportunities to our local
workforce and future generations.
It is not an overstatement to say that
the better Southwestern is, the better
our entire region is.
Some of the difficulties that Southwestern faces,
however, are due to the misconceptions surrounding
community colleges, one of the most prevalent of
these being that they are totally free to students thanks
to state funding.

While it is
true that for
qualifying
students
enrollment fees
are waived, the
total amount
of waived fees
is only a small
portion of the
$16,836.00
that the state
of California
estimates
students living
at home will need in
order to be successful.
For students living
on their own, this
number climbs
to more than
$30,000.00, and
includes estimated
costs for things like
textbooks, supplies,
and transportation.
With a student
population where roughly 80%
have some level of elevated
need or financial insecurity,
the need for additional
support and resources is high,
but the good news is that there
is so much that can be done to
help prepare our students and
strengthen our community.
Southwestern College is
working on the development
of student housing
opportunities and continues
to provide support in the
form of free wi-fi, free food
options on campus, and
a variety of services that
support both academics
and mental/emotional
well-being. The College’s
Foundation also oversees
a variety of scholarship
opportunities as well as
the donor-funded Cares
Emergency Grant Program,
which provides students with
one-time monetary support
to overcome an unexpected
hardship and help them
remain enrolled.
It is through the
larger community
that Southwestern
College and the
Southwestern
College Foundation
have found the magic
and synergy that
truly creates student
success. Students
living in their
cars have become
ASO senators and
moved on to 4-year
universities; students
that have had challenges have
found meaning and direction
through their studies, and nearly
all of Southwestern’s students
have found the inspiration to
exceed their own expectations.
If you are interested in being that
source of inspiration and the
key ingredient in Southwestern
College student success, you are
invited to visit www.swccd.edu/
foundation where you can learn
how to get involved and join the
Southwestern College Family.
The better Southwestern is, the
better our entire region is, and
you have the opportunity to be
part of that success.
Museum
San Diego Children’s
Discovery Museum
SPARKING A LOVE OF LEARNING
Mobile Children’s Museum Ball Wall
For more than 20 years, San Diego
Children’s Discovery Museum (SDCDM)
has been serving the needs of families
in San Diego County. Created by a
group of parents in 1999, their vision
for the Museum was to create a vibrant
learning environment for their children
where they could explore safely and embark on new
adventures through play and imagination.
Situated in downtown Escondido, SDCDM
encompasses 13,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor
space. The Museum buzzes with squeals, giggles, and
joy as children experiment with gravity, engineer
56 GBSAN.COM | JUNE 2024
dams, and dig for dinosaur bones. A true testament to
their mission to spark a love of learning so all children
can discover their wildest dreams.
“At San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum, we
believe in what is called ‘purposeful play.’ Numerous
studies have found that children develop critical
developmental skills such as communication, problemsolving,
and empathy through play,” said Whitney
Raser, Director of Education at SDCDM. “All of our
programs and exhibits are designed to integrate handson
play as an essential component of early childhood
development.”

However, for many
families, access to early
childhood education is
limited. Barriers such
as income, location,
and limited resources
prevent many children
from receiving quality
early education,
thus widening the
achievement gap and
impeding life outcomes.
The Museum’s Access
for All program seeks
to remove barriers,
ensuring all children have an equal start in life.
Through reduced admission, scholarships for Title-I
schools, and sensory-friendly mornings for children
with special needs, SDCDM provides a welcoming and
inclusive space for all children and families seeking
enriching, early learning opportunities.
Nearly 10% of the children SDCDM serves do not
visit the Museum’s physical location. SDCDM’s Mobile
Children’s Museum is a fleet of vehicles that bring the
Museum’s interactive exhibits into the community. The
program breaks down the transportation barrier many
families and Title-I schools face. 90% of the children
the Mobile Children’s Museum serves are economically
disadvantaged.
Imaginative Play with Blocks
“Because of our
distance away from
the city, our children
sometimes miss
out on educational
experiences. We were
so pleased that the
students were able
to problem solve, work
on cooperation, and
have some good oldfashioned
fun with
SDCDM’s engineering
tasks. It was great to
see the teamwork,
inclusion, and
creative thinking
that arose from their
play,” commented
an elementary
teacher at Julian
Elementary.
The Museum’s
mission to spark
a love of learning
would not be
possible without
the relentless
support of the
families, children,
Interactive Engineering Challenges
and teachers it
serves. As the
Museum continues to expand and grow its offerings,
the community’s support is vital.
To celebrate early childhood education and the
collective power of lighting the way for children,
the Museum invites the community to its annual
fundraising event, Ignite Their Spark, on Saturday,
September 7, 2024. All proceeds from the event will
support SDCDM’s ability to provide accessible handson
learning to all children.
The Rady Center
AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A LONG-TERM
IMPACT ON HOMELESSNESS
“The Rady Center
will provide a path to
exit homelessness to
independent living.”
Amidst the considerable obstacles for
people experiencing homelessness
in downtown San Diego, a beacon of
hope and change is on the horizon.
The Salvation Army’s planned
downtown Rady Center project
represents a groundbreaking initiative
that goes beyond providing temporary shelter by
offering long-term solutions to homelessness in San
Diego. With over 100 years of serving people in need,
The Salvation Army brings a wealth of experience
and expertise to the table. Partnering with Wakeland
Housing and Development, who since 1998, have
developed 57 affordable housing projects, ensures that
the Rady Center project is built on a solid foundation
of proven success.
This project is a model of private and public support
that is poised to make a significant impact in our
community. The Salvation Army has secured $27
million in private philanthropy to date, demonstrating
strong community support and a commitment to
addressing homelessness in San Diego. Upon The
Salvation Army’s raising $30 million from the private
sector, Evelyn and Ernest Rady will contribute an
additional $5 million to create a $35 million operating
endowment for The Salvation Army’s programs. This
ensures that the impact of the Rady Center project will
continue for generations to come.
Evelyn and Ernest Rady
The Rady Center
The Rady Center stands out in what it offers to the
community: The Salvation Amy already owns the
land, a full city block, with approval from the City
of San Diego reflecting the thoughtful planning and
engagement undertaken by The Salvation Army.
When completed, the Rady Center will provide 220
housing opportunities from sober living to interim,
transitional, permanent supportive and low-income
housing. The Rady Center will include on-site support
services, a chapel, and a federally approved health
clinic, providing comprehensive care to residents and
the surrounding community. They are poised to begin
demolition and start construction in 2025 and open
in 2027 provided they can secure the needed funding,
financing, and tax credits.
Once finished, the Rady Center will provide
7,100 housing opportunities over ten years
that will do much more than just provide a cot
in a congregate shelter with minimal support
services. What sets the Rady Center apart is
not just its commitment to providing housing,
but the holistic approach to addressing the root
causes of homelessness. It is about more than
just putting a roof over someone’s head; it is
about offering comprehensive support services
that empower individuals to regain control of
their lives.
On average, 80% of people who exit The
Salvation Army transitional housing programs
transition to permanent housing and 95%
stay housed after one year. The Rady Center
will provide a path to exit homelessness to
independent living. Ernest Rady shared with GB
Magazine, “…The Salvation Army’s track record
speaks for itself.” This project will transform
lives and our community for the better.
TONY TERAVAINEN
EMPOWERING MILITARY FAMILIES TO THRIVE
BY: NICHOLE NAOUM
Tony Teravainen,
CEO of Step San
Diego, understands
the military
community
firsthand. Growing
up in an Air
Force family and
serving as a Navy
submariner shaped
his leadership.
He is passionate
about empowering
military families to
not just survive, but
thrive. This passion
fuels his work at Step San Diego and his involvement on
various community boards.
“18 years after I separated from the military, I volunteered
to help nonprofit serving military families, and we
just provided a lot of handouts. I realized that simply
providing handouts was not a sustainable solution,” Tony
explains. “I wanted families to reach their full potential.”
One impactful program is the Emergency Financial
Assistance Program, helping 8,000 families achieve a 90%
success rate in financial wellness. Tony shares a story of
veteran who found hope at Step San Diego after a difficult
discharge and divorce. “Step San Diego was Sam’s last
lifeline,” Tony shared
with GB Magazine.
“We provided
financial counseling
and support, but
most importantly,
we empowered him
to look towards a
brighter future. He
regained control of his
finances and his life.”
Step San Diego has
ambitious plans
for the future,
including a decadelong
expansion
to serve more
military families
nationwide. They
are committed to
responsible growth to
meet the increasing
need. Tony adds
“Community support
is vital. Volunteers, donors, and philanthropists are
essential to Step San Diego’s success.” Tony emphasizes
the importance of this support to fulfill their mission.
Military families face many challenges, including food
insecurity, homelessness, mental health, and suicide.
Step San Diego equips them with skills to navigate
these issues through immediate support, counseling,
and financial education. Individuals and communities
can make a difference by volunteering, donating goods,
or providing financial support. Together, we can help
Step San Diego expand its reach and empower military
families to flourish.
Tony
Teravainen,
CEO de Step
San Diego
entiende
de primera
mano a la
comunidad militar. El haber
nacido en una familia de la
Fuerza Aérea y habiendo
sido submarinista de la
Marina forjaron su liderazgo
y pasión por empoderar
a las familias militares, a
no solo sobrevivir sino a
crecer, llevando adelante este
objetivo por medio de Step
San Diego y su participación
en otras comisiones directivas
comunitarias.
“Después de 18 años
de haber dejado las
Fuerzas Armadas,
me ofrecí como
voluntario en una
organización sin fines
de lucro para ayudar
a las familias de
militares haciendo un
montón de entregas y
me di cuenta de que
el solo hacer entregas
no era una solución
sostenible” explica
Tony “quería que las
familias lograran su
potencial completo”.
financiera. Las personas y comunidades pueden
hacer la diferencia con sus voluntariados, donando
materiales o asistencia financiera, juntos podemos
Burning the Midnight Oil to Bridge
Healthcare and Democracy
Mariela Magana Ceballos, San Ysidro
Health Civic Engagement Intern and A.T
Still University Medical Student
At 6:00 am, Mariela’s alarm jolts her
awake after a night of burning the
midnight oil, fueled by determination
and a late-night snack. As she sips
her tea and grabs a quick breakfast,
Mariela mentally prepares for another
day at San Ysidro Health (SYHealth),
where her medical student journey intertwines with
her new role as a Civic Engagement Intern. Since its
inception in 1969, SYHealth has been a beacon of
compassionate and high-quality healthcare, prioritizing
the most vulnerable in San Diego County. Serving
as a federally qualified health center (FQHC), it is
noteworthy that 85% of its patients live at or below
200% of the federal poverty level, highlighting its
commitment to equitable healthcare access for all.
By 8:00 am, Mariela is already at one of SYHealth’s
clinics, ready to meet her first patient at 8:15 am.
Memories flood back from her early days in medical
school, particularly a poignant encounter with a
homeless pregnant woman battling type 1 diabetes.
From managing insulin regimens amidst transient
living arrangements to navigating dietary challenges,
Mariela reflects on broader societal issues like
healthcare access and equity.
76 GBSAN.COM | JUNE 2024

“In our brief
moments with
patients, we must
empower them not
just in managing
health but also in
advocating for their
rights,” Mariela
asserts. “Voting
is not merely a
civic duty; it is a
tool for shaping
policies impacting
healthcare
outcomes.”
As a Civic
Engagement
Intern, Mariela
embodies
this ethos at
SYHealth.
Alongside her
medical studies
at A.T. Still
University School
of Osteopathic
Medicine in
Arizona, she
channels her
passion for
community
service and policy
advocacy into
initiatives like My
Vote. My Health.
This statewide
effort, gearing up
for the November
2024 election,
aims to amplify
SYHealth Mountain Health
Family Medicine in Campo
SYHealth Chula
Vista Medical Plaza
SYHealth
Kimball Highland
underrepresented voices, particularly Latinos, in
California.
Drawing from eight years of civic engagement and policy
advocacy, Mariela strives to bridge healthcare and civic
participation. Through partnerships between SYHealth
and educational institutions like A.T. Still University,
she envisions a future where medical students catalyze
systemic change beyond
clinical roles.
Statistics paint a stark
reality: while Latinos
make up 40% of
California’s population,
only 25% are likely
voters. Initiatives like My
Vote. My Health. seek to
mobilize low-propensity
voters across key
regions, addressing this
disparity. SYHealth
acknowledges that
healthcare extends
beyond clinics, with
social determinants
significantly
impacting well-being.
Mariela’s advocacy,
fueled by collective
action’s tangible
impact, emphasizes
the importance of
every vote.
“Every vote matters,”
Mariela insists, citing
instances where a
mere twenty votes
swayed local elections.
“We must dispel the
myth that one vote
does not make a
difference. Our health,
communities, and
future hinge on active
participation in shaping
equity and justice.”
As Mariela continues her dual journey as a medical
student and civic advocate, her story underscores the
profound connection between voting and healthcare - a
bond transcending ballots and clinic walls to forge a
healthier, more equitable society.
Hero
Honoring US Navy Commander
Hank Strong
United States Navy
Commander Henry
“Hank” Strong, Jr.,
the Commanding
Officer of Attack
Squadron 212
aboard the USS
Hancock, who
was shot down
over Vietnam in
May 1972, has
been permanently
memorialized at
the San Diego Air
& Space Museum with his named being
added under the cockpit of A-4 Skyhawk
in the Modern Jet Age Gallery during a
special ceremony in March.
Commander Strong’s name was painted
under the port side of the A4’s cockpit.
Commander Frank C. Green Jr.’s name remains on the starboard
side of the A-4. On July 10, 1972, Commander Green, also piloting
an A-4F Skyhawk from Attack Squadron 212, was on a night armed
reconnaissance mission over Highway 1A in Vietnam. Commander
Green’s Skyhawk went down while attacking enemy vehicles during the
mission, and he was killed in the crash.
“For many Americans, the Vietnam War was one of the most critical times
in their lives. More than 58,000 Americans made the ultimate sacrifice in
Vietnam from every branch of the United States military,” Jim Kidrick,
President & CEO of the San Diego Air & Space Museum shared with
86 GBSAN.COM | JUNE 2024
GB Magazine. “Men like Henry Strong
and Frank Green can be counted
among the finest patriots the United
States has ever produced. Here at the
San Diego Air & Space Museum, we
are proud to salute and honor their
courage, dedication to their comrades
and service to our country.”

On May 25, 1972, then Cmdr. Henry H. Strong, Jr.
was the pilot of the lead aircraft in a section of A-4F
Skyhawks that launched from the deck of the USS
Hancock as part of a much greater package of aircraft
conducting an evening combat strike mission against
communist targets located in the densely populated
and heavily defended region just southwest of Vinh,
North Vietnam.
After arriving in the target area, Cmdr. Strong
established contact with the airborne battlefield
command and control center controlling all air
operations in that region. Shortly thereafter Henry
Strong was given permission to commence their
attack on target.
At 1830 hours, Cmdr. Strong visually acquired the
target and proceeded to lead the flight into position
for an attack pass. Other pilots and aircrews heard
Cmdr. Strong transmit “Rolling in.” After the attack
commenced,
“More than 58,000
Americans made the
ultimate sacrifice in
Vietnam.”
the Skyhawks
came under
heavy enemy
anti-aircraft
artillery
fire. Other
pilots operating in the same sector observed an
“unidentified aircraft roll inverted and go nose down
at an altitude and velocity that could have precluded
the pilot from surviving.”
Originally from North Wales, Pennsylvania, Strong
was 39 when he passed. His remains have not been
returned from Vietnam.
Education
KIPP Adelante
Preparatory Academy
COLLEGE-BOUND ALUMNA SHARES
HER LOVE FOR STEM & COMMUNITY
Elvira proudly holds a UC Irvine
pennant in the KIPP Adelante library
In elementary school, Elvira was a shy, timid
student. Although math was her favorite subject
at her public school, she frequently silenced her
inquisitive mind and thirst for knowledge. For
middle school, her parents
decided to switch from a public
school to a charter school,
so they enrolled her at KIPP
Adelante Preparatory Academy in
San Diego. A decision that would
profoundly impact their daughter’s
life beyond middle school.
KIPP Adelante is a school grounded in the belief that
students will “seguir adelante” (continue to progress)
in pursuit of their dreams - and Elvira could see and
feel the KIPP difference the moment she walked
through the doors.
88 GBSAN.COM | JUNE 2024
“A school grounded
in the belief that
students will “seguir
adelante” in pursuit
of their dreams.”
“Before middle school, I really did not think about
college. When I got to KIPP, they made me aware of
college by naming classrooms after colleges and helped
me see how college was an option for me,” she said.
“If anyone has the opportunity to
attend a KIPP school, they should
take advantage of the opportunity
because it will be helpful in their
high school journey.”
Throughout her middle school
experience, she grew to embrace
her ambitious spirit and her
deep passion for learning. When asked about KIPP
Adelante’s impact on her educational journey, Elvira
said one of the key things she learned to do best was
to fearlessly ask for help, which is something she took
with her to High Tech High Media Arts, a projectbased
public charter high school in San Diego.

Elvira graduates
from Kipp
Some of her proudest moments in high school included
being a founding member of the Ballet Folklórico dance
team, being a club lead for MEChA, producing a magazine
on mental health disorders, creating a podcast about air
pollution disparities in under-resourced communities, and
designing a campus mural based on immigrants’ perspectives
of the American dream.
Although she always knew she had a passion for STEM, a
recent trip to her parent’s hometown in Oaxaca, Mexico,
solidified her decision to pursue a STEM career. While
there, she volunteered at a community clinic and was deeply
concerned about the lack of access to medical devices and
services. To address inequities like this, she plans to use her
degree to create affordable and accessible medical devices for
under-resourced communities.
When it came time to research her college and career
opportunities, Elvira connected with her KIPP Forward
counselor, who helped her navigate the college application
process and explore her options. “I noticed some of my high
school classmates would be stressed because they did not
have support. I also noticed I would understand more of the
Elvira with her peers during
a MEChA club fundraiser
college process than my peers,” she said. “That
was all thanks to KIPP Forward because of all
the resources, presentations, and information
they gave me. They made me more confident
throughout the process.”
In the fall, Elvira will attend the University of
California, Irvine as a biomedical engineer and
help close the gender gap for women in STEM.
She will also be one step closer to living out
her dream of fighting for healthcare equity and
making a difference in her communities.
This is the last page of the first 200 issues of
are celebrating!
We wanted to thank all our clients,
partners, and readers for your continued
support! Thank you because without your
support, we would not be here today.
We started the business when we were dating in 2007, and
little did we know God had a beautiful journey ahead of
us. We took a huge risk to start a business as boyfriend and
girlfriend, and many times it was scary for us to go into an
industry we had no prior experience. 18 years later, and
after getting married, we have seen it all in the publishing
world and weathered the storm.
With vision, heart, tenacity, hard work, dedication,
(and many sleepless nights) we are extremely grateful
GB Magazine is celebrating its 200th issue. It has
been a roller coaster of highs and lows, but through
it all we are grateful to have become a vehicle for
individuals, businesses, and non-profits to showcase
how they are making a difference in our community.
We are grateful to you for giving us a platform to
connect with our community in ways we could have
only dreamed of.
We look forward to bringing you the next 200 issues
of GB Magazine!
Respectfully and with appreciation,
