Real Estate Investments for Retirement
Real estate can be a wise choice to boost your income. While investing in
real estate is not for everybody, some retirees may find it a reliable
income source, even when the economy is not at its best. By owning a
variety of properties, retirees can tap into a steady flow of rental income.
This can provide stability that is hard to find in other investments like
stocks or bonds, which typically react more uniformly to market changes.
Real estate can be an effective shield against inflation. Owning property
allows you to increase rental prices and mitigate the impact on your
cash holdings in retirement accounts. This means you will be able to
keep a better pace with the rising cost of living.
Real estate represents a prudent investment choice, primarily due to its
potential for appreciation over time. Historical data suggest that
property values trend upwards, offering significant gains for those who
hold onto their investments, while still providing a steady stream of
income.
Find your financial footing: You want to be clear about your finances
before jumping into real estate investment. Retirement savings, pension
plans, and other sources of income should all be considered to
determine how much you can invest without cramping your current
lifestyle.
Set clear goals: What do you want your retirement funds to do for you?
Identify your specific needs and preferences to determine how much
you need to amass in real estate investments. Setting a retirement
income goal is not arbitrary; it is about knowing the needed income for a
comfortable life after retirement. Make sure your goals are practical,
reflecting your current finances and acknowledging risks in real estate.
Diversify your portfolio: Real estate has plenty of options to consider.
From condominium units to luxury homes, each type of property and
location comes with its unique advantages, making it possible to
weather different market storms.
Be realistic: Managing a rental property demands versatility. If you are
not ready to be your own handyman, property law expert, and tenant
satisfaction specialist, you will have to assemble a trustworthy team to
assist you.
Real estate investment is a smart move for securing your retirement. It
not only diversifies income sources but also counters the rising cost of
living. It is tangible—you own something you can physically see and
touch, offering a unique sense of security. The time to take action for a
financially stable retirement is now. Shape your future with smart
investments in real estate!

“
What are you doing?” I said to my dad in total
disbelief.
We were talking outside his home, and out of
nowhere, he had come to a complete stop, snapped
to attention and saluted the volunteer patrol car as
it made its daily rounds around his Florida senior
community.
“They’re pretend cops,” he said with his smile.
“I figured I would give them a pretend salute.”
That was my dad. He’s gone now but (as always)
I think of him; especially with Father’s Day
occurring this month.
In his own way, my dad taught me about life,
love and the meaning of family. He was my hero
and there surely can be no higher tribute or
compliment in honoring a person than to try and
imitate him.
Simply stated, my dad lived for and loved his family and our family
lived for and loved him right back. How’s that for a role model?
Growing up in the Bronx, he taught me to how to swing a bat and
always use 2 hands with my Stan Musial baseball glove when catching.
He was my Little League coach and I cannot imagine a better childhood
memory.
He made me appreciate that whether going to Shea Stadium to see
the Mets or watching them on TV, the best seats of the house were
always those when I sat next to him.
He taught me kindness, respect and that there were those certain
words – certain expressions that could be said only during a football
game when his (and now my) New York Giants were playing.
My dad made it very clear that such language, while highly offensive
was allowed – if not mandated when our team screwed up. And believe
me, while growing up (and even to this day) they screwed up a lot.
Such “tradition” has passed on to a new generation - my four sons.
I cannot begin to describe the look on her face and how horrified my
Like Father, Like Son
By: Dan Roberts / Roberts Rules
Rana was when she first heard, and then realized, that such choice of
phrases among this publisher and his “children” was not only tolerated
but expected.
While it may not have been some Norman Rockwell “father-son”
(and also grandsons) portrait, I ask you: Where else in the world
would any son/grandson want to be on a Sunday
afternoon?
My dad also showed me how to be a loving,
caring husband and he proudly did so by example.
And while I have written (more than) a good deal
about my failings, shortcomings, and downright
stupidity, my PILL (partner in love & life) cannot
ever fault me to my devotion and respect that I
always had and have for her.
Perhaps you can now understand Rana’s
consternation when our Sun City’s community
patrol car drove by when we were unpacking
groceries from our driveway last month. While
in mid-sentence and with a tear in my eye, but a
smile on my face, I placed the bundles on the ground, stood tall and
saluted the patrol car.
“Like father, like son,” she said as she shook her head. It was the
nicest thing she ever said about me.
You Gotta Laugh - Dad’s Turn
By: Bill Caserta / Bill’s Blurbs
In honor of Father’s Day, what better way to
show our love and appreciation than to run
the following words of wisdom? Agree, disagree,
smile, laugh or shake your head all you want, but
you know that the quotes below are entirely true.
To dads and grandpas everywhere, a very Happy Father’s Day.
I gave my father $100 and said, “Buy yourself something that will
make your life easier.” So he went out and bought a present for my
mother. - Rita Rudner
I enjoy Father’s Day. It’s a time when I pause to reflect on the joy
that has come into my life thanks to my two wonderful children, whose
names escape me. - Dave Barry
When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant, I could hardly
stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was
astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.
- Mark Twain
The message of Mother’s Day is “Mothers are amazingly good
at mothering! They deserve a special day!” Whereas the message of
Father’s Day is: “We’re only doing this because we have Mother’s Day.”
- Dave Barry
To be a successful father there’s one absolute rule: When you have a
kid, don’t look at it for the first two years. - Ernest Hemingway
I got my Dad a GPS for Father’s Day. Now someone other than my
mom can tell him where to go. - Melanie White
On Father’s Day, I’m doing something for my Dad that he’s wanted
for years. I’m getting a job. - Melanie White
* That’s My Boy: A small boy was at the zoo with his father. They
were looking at the tigers, and his father was telling him how ferocious
they were.
“Daddy, if the tigers got out and ate you …”“Yes, son?” the father
asked, ready to console him.
The son replied, Which bus would I take home?”
A Daughter Remembers
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
To me he was just Dad!
I have written several times over the years
about my father, but
as Father’s Day approaches, as the war in
Israel/Gaza rages on, as demonstrations
around our country continue, and the
80 th anniversary of D-Day is remembered, it
seems appropriate to talk about another side
to my Dad.
Although he was raised by orthodox
Jewish parents, my dad was very laxed in
his religion and the way he practiced our
faith. He had, however, no tolerance for
antisemitism in any form. I’m sure that
only increased in his mind-set after his
service in the British army during and after
World War II.
A perfect example of that attitude was the
time before Israel became an independent
country. My father was stationed there while
it was under British rule.
His unit (which was under his control)
was ordered to be stationed one night on
the beach. Their orders were to turn away
any boats attempting to bring European
(meaning Jewish, consisting mostly
survivors from Germany’s concentration
camps) immigrants ashore.The men in
my father’s patrol stood at attention in a
straight line facing the ocean diligently
watching throughout the night. Suddenly,
in the distance they spotted several small
boats apparently heading for shore.
Instinctively my father turned his back
to the sea, folded his arms across his chest
in defiant stubbornness and waited. One
by one his men followed suit, even though
my father was the only Jewish man among
them.
As the boats landed, my father and
his men rushed forward to assist the
elder immigrants ashore. He completely
followed his order to stop any boat he saw
approaching, but nothing was said about
assisting anyone on the beach.
Once they were safe, the soldiers went back to their formation as if
nothing happened. They all followed orders as required.
I lost my father in February, 2003 and when I think of him it is of
a very handsome older man, mid-summer, minus his shirt, military
“swagger stick” tucked under his arm walking, marching style, along
June 2024
Maryland Parkway, politely turning down any neighbor stopping to
offer a ride.
While speaking, he never lost his British accent. He was as British as
they come, yet he celebrated receiving his American Citizenship 5 years
after arriving in this country.
And to hear him tell it, (again and again)
it was the proudest day in his life.
*Broken-hearted but not a victim:
Without question, I am an animal lover.
When I recently lost my two dogs (after 13
years) I was devastated.
After one month, I realized my house was
too darn quiet, so I began searching all the
rescue groups in town hoping to find a fluffy
dog. My searches turned up large “bully
breeds.” I had to admit that I was not as
young as I once was so I began to focus on
small breeds.
I have always loved the Shih-Tzu breed
and eventually I began communicating
with a lady whose was getting great referrals
on Facebook. She said she had pups for sale,
the price was reasonable, and I committed
to buy the one in the photo.
As the delivery day approached the
breeder sent me an “ownership certificate”
and said that she was unable to deliver the
pup but hired a delivery company she had
used often. The company would reach out
to me with a tracking number and time of
arrival.
Another text followed. I was to choose
between a rental or purchase an airconditioned
crate for the pup (I already had
a name for her – Hershey) to travel in.
The rental was $700 (purchase price $900)
but 95% of that fee would be reimbursed to
me with the return of the crate. And yes, I
was beginning to get that “scam feeling.”
My response was that I didn’t want
“Hershey” delivered in a crate. I’d jump in
my car and pick up the pup.
I asked for an address. No address was
given but when I did an internet search for
Express Logisticx Delivery Agency, I could
not find any listing.
When I claimed that this was an elaborate scam all I received was
denials. I then (sadly) checked out the breeder’s listed address (it
claimed an address in Fallon) on the so-call ownership papers and
found that to be a fake as well.
What is it that Publisher Dan always says regarding scammers?
HANG UP THE PHONE! So with a broken heart I did.

Father & Son Memories
By: Jonny Bird / Here’s Jonny
It’s funny the memories that you keep, isn’t it?
My dad was an interesting character, and a
big influence on me when I was growing up. He
was stoic, could build or fix anything and was the
hardest-working man I knew.
He was the guy that friends and neighbors would come to, to get
something fixed, and could be the life of the party, as long as kids
weren’t around. He drank beer, raced cars, owned two filling stations,
and was a “man’s man” when men could still be that.
We didn’t talk much, he and I. He didn’t have a whole lot to say. My
Grandfather Obert was the same way, so I guess that’s where he must
have got it. It’s
amazing how
much I learned
from so few words,
though.
He taught me to
work my hardest.
This was a hard
lesson for me to
learn. At 13, I would
procrastinate and
mess around and
do anything to
avoid a chore like
mowing the grass
or bringing in
wood for the wood
stove.
It wasn’t until
he was particularly
frustrated with my
lackadaisical attitude that he would say the words that would change
my life forever.
“Do you want to grow up and be lazy and shiftless like “so-andso”!?”
“So-and-so” was a person we all knew but no one respected
because of a lifestyle unsuited for any sort of success.
Well, those words pierced my soul and turned that lazy and shiftless
kid into a workhorse for the rest of his life. I got my first job shortly after
that, before I could legally do so, and never forgot that lesson.
My dad is now in his eighties and finally winding down. We talk
almost every day. He’ll call me to tell me about a bird that landed on
the deck, the weather, or share his morning routine of banana bread
and a banana.
He turned into a chatterbox! I know he’ll read this and when he does,
here’s my message to him and all the dads out there: I love you, and
Happy Father’s Day!
A Child Star Icon
By: Beverly Washburn / Hollywood Memories
wanted to write about one of the loveliest ladies
I of whom I have the privilege of knowing. For
those who remember
films of the ‘40s and ‘50s, of course you
remember child star Margaret O’Brien.
She was one of the most famous child stars
who ever graced the screen. It’s safe to say that
she is right up there with Shirley Temple and
Judy Garland. Margaret was born in 1937, did
her first film in 1941 and was destined to
become a movie star.
A bit of trivia: She was born with the name
Angela.” In 1942, she was cast in a movie
called “Journey for Margaret” and quickly
became famous for her role. Her mother then
decided to change her name to “Margaret.”
She was in quite a few movies. Some of
her most famous ones were “Meet Me in St.
Louis”, Our Vines Have Tender Grapes “ and
“Little Women” just to name a few.
She won a juvenile Academy Award as the most outstanding child
star of 1944. Sadly it was stolen and lost for 50 years!
What was ironic (and wonderful) at the same time was that after
50 years it somehow ended up in a Swap Meet! Two movie collectors
N2S2 | NNSS | NEVADA TEST SITE (NTS)
bought it and found a way to get in touch with her and give it back to
her!
How wonderful to know there are still so many kind people in the
world!
As a side note, one of my scrap books
containing many photos, somehow ended
up in a yard sale in another state! Someone
bought it and managed to track me down and
wanted to sell it to me for a $1,000.00. Those
of you who read my book know how I got it
back.
Growing up I was in awe of her and when
I finally got to meet her several years ago, I
was (as you can imagine) thrilled beyond
measure. She is truly one of the sweetest
people in the world.
This is a photo of us a few months ago
taken in Seattle where we did some old time
radio reenactments together. How blessed I am
to have worked with her and to now be able to
call her a friend!
Until next time, remember - To have joy, one must share it.
Comic Barbutti Turns 90
By: Sam Wagmeister / People & Places
Back in the mid-‘60s, an enduring friendship
developed between up and coming comedian
Pete Barbutti
and touring partner Nat King Cole.
At a morning meeting in Cole’s
hotel room, the phone rang.
Cole’s responses to the caller,
Barbutti remembered, were
primarily, “Uh-huh”; “I’m with
Pete Barbutti”; and “I don’t know,
I’ll ask Pete.”
The iconic vocalist turned to the
promising comic and asked, “Pete,
it’s JFK. Do you want to go to the
White House for lunch?”
Overwhelmed by the invitation,
a young Barbutti declined JFK’s
offer, but last month sat down for lunch and an interview with The
Vegas Voice to reflect on his 60-plus years in show business.
Barbutti’s comedy was the model of many of his era’s contemporaries:
Bill Dana, Buddy Hackett, Shecky Greene and husband and wife team
Nichols and May. His cerebral story telling that builds to pun-based
punchlines was on display last month as hundreds of fans and industry
pals packed Ahern Hotel’s
comedy club to celebrate his
90 th birthday.
Barbutti’s path to the
footlights began as a 10-
year old accordion player
at weddings in his native
Scranton, PA. “Everybody
in our neighborhood got an
accordion,” he remembered.
“It was important to keep the
Italian culture alive.”
He taught himself trumpet,
drums and piano and soon
was playing in the Big Bands
of the day. Filling in for the band leader, “I got bored just calling the
songs so I made up (humorous) stories as an intro. The people would
start clapping and ignore the music.” From then on, storytelling
became his focus.
In his early days, Peter Lasally, producer of Arthur Godfrey’s show,
caught Barbutti’s act at Reno’s Harold’s Club Casino. Lasally convinced
Godfrey to invite Barbutti to appear and Barbutti became a regular
guest.
When Lasally moved to the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, he
scheduled Barbutti for an appearance. Out of character, Carson invited
Barbutti to the guest chair.
When Carson realized that the other guest, Mel Torme’s laughter was
a result of Barbutti’s banter, not Johnny’s, Barbutti was barred from the
show. It took 14 years for Lasally to convince Carson to invite Barbutti
back.
“After that, I could get away with anything on that show.” Barbutti’s
lost count, but he holds the record for the most appearances, over 50,
on Carson’s iconic late night show.
The highlight of the comedian’s long career remains his 10-
day engagement opening for Sinatra at Carnegie Hall. “There’s still
something magical being in Carnegie Hall and having Sinatra sing
New York New York.”
Barbutti remains a student of nearly all forms of music, equally
eloquent discussing opera, classical, show and movie music and diving
deeply into all forms of jazz.
Barbutti has called Las Vegas his home since January 2, 1960.
Recalling New Year’s Eve in South Bend, IN: “After Auld Lang Syne, we
got in the car and drove straight out.”Today he keeps busy with Master
of Ceremonies duties, occasional headlining appearances and serving
on the advisory board for the Las Vegas Jazz Society.
Las Vegas auto executive Jim Marsh, whose friendship with Barbutti
numbers over 35 years says, “He’s an iconic legend, one of the best.”
Everyone’s talking about manifesting
abundance. You don’t need to manifest
abundance. Open your eyes. It’s all around you!
Why do we fail to notice?
Abundance abounds with awareness. Once
you’re aware of your abundances, you can
learn and grow from them.
We speak about a lot of things that we’re
grateful for, but seldom do we speak about
abundance and when we do, it’s often in a
prayer. Acknowledging abundance in your
everyday life comes when you least expect
it. It’s usually a surprise…a realization…
maybe even an epiphany.
For me, my relationship with awareness of
Abundance came with my relationship with
grief after my husband passed. They kind of go hand and hand.
The awareness I faced in grief is what led me through the Valley of
Abundance. In grief, I was looking for solutions and distractions for my
pain, while abundance brought me back center and reminded me of
the many things offering fulfillment in my life.
Abundance has had a rebirth. It’s the realization that it’s all around
us. Fact is we don’t see it because we’re used to seeking it out. We never
Abundance Abounds with Awareness
Mission Accomplished
By: Adrea Nairne-Barrera / Senior Moments
Sometimes I wonder if I’ll
run out of ideas and new
projects, but as time moves
forward, I still have a legal pad full of notes to
remind me to do something.
So as I began writing this column, I realized
that this is my “mark” that I can leave of my
thoughts and adventures in my golden years. It’s
not a biography or diary, but observations of how
we perceive life events as we get older.
Most importantly, you must maintain a sense of
humor and be ready to tolerate a lot more than you
did in your younger years. Learn to say “no”, trash
the diet and cosmetics, choose wisely and don’t
accept too much compromise. We’ve earned that
right.
If I don’t want to do something, I can say so
because I don’t want to do it. If I don’t want to eat
something, I can say no to that too.
I can be as crabby as I want, as long as I don’t hurt someone’s
feelings. I’m still ridden with guilt if someone doesn’t like me, so I
guess that stays with you forever.
Senior Moments became my soapbox and began with my dating
June 2024
knew it was there for the taking.
Abundance is often more than what we expected or anticipated. Once
you recognize abundance, you realize you have more than enough,
ample quantity equaling affluence and wealth. It’s appreciation of
life and respect for the universe and what it
provides.
We walk through the orchard every day
And fail to notice along the way
Abundance hanging all around
And generously lying on the ground
When I stop to acknowledge what I see
It’s the gifts of abundance providing for
me.
It’s a walk we should all take. An awareness
of abundance results in Positive Aging!
adventure when I turned 60 and found myself single again. I was
amazed at how the whole thing worked and started to write about it.
There had been a news story about dating horror
was a good story and I was encouraged to keep
going. The first one was The Internet Bar Scene
By: Renee Riendeau / Movie Revelations
This “R” rated drama, “Civil War” written by
Alex Garland, gives you something you did
not expect.
What kind of an American are
you? This is the question asked of
a soldier holding an assault rifle
as he confronts a group of terrified
journalists.
The question and its underlying
impulse to divide and demonize is
at the heart of why Garland made a
much-anticipated and already much
debated film about the implosion of
the United States. He warns against
the dangers of extreme partisanship.
In the film, America’s divisions have erupted into chaos. Fleets of
helicopters patrol the skies and explosions rock major cities as the
secessionist Western Forces (including those from Texas and California)
advance on the President.
A team of military journalists race against time to reach Washington
as rebel fractions descend upon the White House. Garland wanted to
X Burlesque
By: Dianne Davis / That’s Entertainment
Burlesque, a topless review at the Flamingo
X Las Vegas has been entertaining audience
members on the Las Vegas Strip for 22 years.
Here’s why – It’s sexy, fun, provocative,
titillating, and entertaining.
The sexy production in the X Burlesque
theater features attractive woman with
various sized attributes. Wink, Wink. You
know what I mean.
None are what you’d call voluptuous,
which is fine. Big boobs don’t enhance
dance numbers. These ladies have just
the right amount of bounce as they strut
their stuff through the course of the show.
What makes this entertainment work
is the light-hearted attitude that permeates the production. Naturally
the costuming is skimpy. Hey, you didn’t go for the costumes.
But the ladies’ outfits are colorful, creative, and well designed for
the proper exposure with a sense of merriment. Tuxedos, roller skates,
boas, tassels – you’ll see them all through the course of the 75 minute
production.
They recently introduced some stunning new costumes. They’ve even
got one number that glows in the darkened theater.
The ladies are all attractive and wholesome, but with just the right
June 2024
make the press the heroes of the story.
The cast includes Kirsten Dunst, Calee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley
Henderson, and Wagner Moura. The movie is presenting old fashioned
reporters, as opposed to the extreme
bias of journalist who are essentially
producing propaganda. The movie tries
to function like those reporters.
Critics say: A torturous, overrated
movie without a point, well-crafted
but has nothing to say, this splashy
provocative yarn about photojournalist
on the front lines of an imaginary war,
tough and unsettling by design.
“Civil War” is a close up look at
violent uncertainly of a nation in crisis.
I was somewhat disappointed in this
film. Lots of shoot ’em up and lack of a solid story line. I rate this film
#3 on a scale of #5. I probably won’t see you at the movies this time.
Renee Riendeau is the movie reviewer for The Vegas Voice. Renee
can be reached at rriendeau@aol.com and is anxious to hear
from you.
amount of twinkle in their eyes that says, “Hey fella, I like you.” The
interaction with the audience in the intimate, cabaret-like environment
adds to the enjoyment.
The dance numbers are high energy, titillating and provocative, but
never sleazy. This is not the dance numbers you’ll find in a gentlemen’s’
club.
Rather about the splendid on-spot
choreography of the dance routines. The
butt shaking Stayin Alive number was a
stand out. In honor of its anniversary, X
Burlesque introduced eight captivating,
new dance routines.
The pole dancing was spectacular
and done on an elevated platform in the
center of the room where all could enjoy
the ladies’ physical agility. Yes, all. Ladies
will enjoy this show as well.
Special effects included scenes on the high hung screens on each
side of the room and the requisite smoke on occasion. There were even
balloons at one point and bubbles at another. Enjoy this sexy topless
review inside the X Burlesque Theatre at Flamingo Las Vegas.
Swimming Pool
Memories - Continued
By: Mike Murphy / Social Insecurity
For kids growing up in the hot and humid
Midwest with no air-conditioning, public
swimming pools in the 1950s were fun…if one survived.
At my neighborhood pool, we had the standard low and high diving
boards which were mainly used as launching pads for shoving kids off
who were too timid to jump. And, of course, surviving a dive off the
high board was a mandatory rite of passage to manhood.
There was also another way in which the local swimming pool was
connected to survival for me and my friends: it was a very dangerous
place to hang out - a dunk or be dunked world.
I would spend much of my afternoon at the pool trying to hide in
the crowd and dodge detection by the “greasers” and “hoods.” One had
to carefully time entering the locker room to avoid getting snapped by
their wet towels.
One preventive step a kid could take upon entering the pool area was
to carefully scan the water for guys wearing black Speedos. Without
fail, they were always the bad dudes.
Whenever a female lifeguard took an occasional stroll around the
pool, the tough guys sporting black Speedos would go nuts attempting
to catch her eye and show off by dunking each other and any sap (i.e.,
me) who just happened to be innocently dog-paddling by.
Back then everyone wanted to get a tan because. . . well, because we
were basically dumb. We had no idea that too much sun could be bad
for you.
Although, in hindsight, you’d think that we would have been a bit
suspicious when we came home with 90% of our body beet red, forcing
us to sleep standing up for several nights due to excruciating pain.
Plus, it should have been obvious that one’s skin peeling like a snake
and falling off in tangled, nasty globs was not a healthy process. But,
no, we were suckers for Coppertone’s push that tanning was cool and
healthy.
A nice tan could even make up for bad hair, acne, and a host of other
physical defects. Keep in mind, that I grew up when body shaming was
de rigueur for many teen boys.
Daily Healthy Routines - Continued
By: Tom Harmon / Lean Dog
Hey Kids! I thought I’d continue with the same
theme from last month’s article that listed
some of my daily
healthy routines.
Let’s talk first about food. It’s probably
the most important decision we make
every day and being indifferent to the
importance of making good choices is
just asking for trouble, health wise.
I’ve been a proponent of the Eat Right
4 Your Type diet for decades and if you’re
not familiar with it I encourage you to
look into it. It is based on the premise
that we should make our food choices
based upon our blood type.
I can only speak to the benefits from my personal experience. Before
I tried this approach I “thought” I was eating healthy by cutting out
meat, balancing carbs/fats/protein but was always suffering from
chronic heartburn, indigestion, and elimination problems.
The second I went to the recommended diet for blood type O, all
my symptoms and discomfort went away. I also found it far easier to
maintain my weight and most of my aches and pains disappeared.
Check it out. Dr. Peter D’Adamo is the author and proponent of this
natural way of eating.
With that said, I feel that the biggest challenge in getting people to
make changes in what they eat is overcoming their indifference about
their food choices. It’s too easy to opt for
convenience.
The old complaint “but I love” this
food when they know, that’s it’s ruining
their health is a challenge you can
overcome and defeat.
Bottom line is if we don’t become
serious about our food and drink,
that indifference is going to become a
very expensive decision in the form of
unnecessary medical treatment and,
sadly, cutting short all the wonderful things this life has to offer.
Remember…Dancing is a great activity so get off your butt.
Pretty Feet
By: Linda Bateman-Gomez / Timeless Beauty
Summertime and sandals are back! Living in
Las Vegas, sandals are not
really just summertime shoes,
but we often tend to wear more
open-toed and open back shoes this time of year.
Pedicures are one way to make sure we take care of
our feet, so our toes look pretty and manicured. While
my favorite part of a Pedi is the massage, having a
good pedicure usually addresses the callouses on our
feet as well.
While our heels may not seem as important as our
toes visually they are if you’re wearing open back
shoes. Our heels in slingbacks or flip-flops can be
very noticeable.
Going barefoot can cause our heels to look dirty
even after washing because they are often rough and
look dark. Callous files used at home are one way to keep our heels
smoother between pedicures. Using a good scrub with a washcloth or
loofah also helps.
I recently found a great product that combines a loofah type material
and soap designed for our feet. It’s a Pedi buffer from a company called
Spongelle, offering gentle cleansing and exfoliation.
There are several wonderful fragrances, French lavender being my
personal favorite. The bars sell for $18.00 on their
website and last for 30+ washes.
Aside from the Pedi buffers Spongelle has an entire
line of similar products for all over body cleansing.
They even have some specialty products designed
with men in mind - like the extreme back buffer
scrubber.
Keep in mind if you use the Pedi buffer in the
shower, it is very soapy and can be very slippery.
Having recently recovered from a broken leg, I’m
very aware of possible slip & fall situations, so be
extra careful should you decide to try this.
Keeping your heels soft and clean will help ensure
you look as good walking out as you do walking in.
Happy summer!
Summer has arrived and so have all the new
shoe styles. It’s always exciting to see the new
designs.
Men’s shoes
have changed tremendously over the
years. Some people think that men’s
shoes are boring and the styles don’t
really change. Nothing can be further
than the truth.
As it turns out, men’s shoes have a bit
of history behind them. Even in biblical
times, people walked around with
protective footwear to avoid the rocks,
and harsh elements.
Passing through the middle ages,
men’s shoes were flat, made of leather
and silk and oftentimes were pointed at the tips. During Louis XIV
reign, there was the introduction of buckles and the elite even wore
rhinestones to adorn their shoes.
Moving towards the 1950s, who doesn’t remember the Florsheim or
oxford styles. The Chelsea boots (made popular by the Beatles) also
made an important contribution.
As the ‘60s and ‘70s rolled around, I can recall my sisters and many
of their dates breaking out the platform shoes, and wouldn’t you know,
everything about that era can be seen in many of the stores today.
20
The Many Styles of Men’s Shoes
June 2024
In the ‘80s and ‘90s it was mostly about comfort for men’s shoes. Doc
Martens (which is still a huge hit) made their way onto the rows of new
shoe styles for both men and women.
Seeing a change towards comfort mixed with stylish looks shows that
men’s shoes are definitely not boring. There are too many styles to list
them all so it’s easier to highlight a few:
1. Derby lace up shoes that come in
suede and various colors,
2. Slip-on sneakers,
3. Adidas trainers making a comeback
from the ‘80s,
4. The Sperry top sider aka “the boat
shoe”,
5. The Bass Weejuns loafers,
6. And my personal favorite Cole Haan
oxford style shoes that lace up.
So for our gentleman readers, if any
of these styles are still in your closet then
you’re in luck, as men’s shoe fashions have reinvented themselves. If
not, one new pair might be a great addition.
Dining vs. Eating
By: Gayla Kalp / Life is Laughter
like to dine where you are seated at a lovely
I table or booth, waited on like a Queen and
served great food. As opposed to standing in a
line to order, service is minimal and the food is
a mystery.
When you are greeted at a dining restaurant, the Hostess is nicely
dressed and has skills. They make you feel welcome.
As opposed to a place like “Big Bubba’s Bar B Q” where the Hostess
looks like they threw on something from their dirty clothes bin and acts
like you are interrupting his day to seat you.
In the Dining Restaurant, the seating at a lovely table or booth is
“the Norm.” At the Eating Place, you get a very used, marred table with
chairs that rock because one of the legs is too short.
My Kingdom for a
Handyman
By: Dianne Hahn / Back in the Days
woke up the other morning to find Niagara
I Falls cascading from my kitchen faucet. When
hubby was alive, I would have said, “Honey, the kitchen facet is broken.”
He’d bring his can-do attitude, his toolbox and roll of duct tape and
fix it! Now I have to find a handyman…no easy feat!
I know not where to look. Plus, all handymen are not created equal!
A good plumber is hard to find, too. I called one about Niagara Falls.
“I can squeeze you in on Tuesday ” he said.
I wondered if he’d come to my rescue before my kitchen was
transformed into an indoor swimming pool? I was wearing swim shoes
and jumping over puddles around the house.
The menu in the Dining Restaurant is simple and each item is very
tempting. At the Eating Place, you are given a menu as big as a phone
book with very confusing names like “Momma’s Amazing Homestyle
Mock Meatloaf Wonder.”
The presentation is no better. Huge plates of mountains of food. I will
say however, that the Dining Restaurant serves its food on a regular
plate but the food is piled on top of each other.
The potatoes are at the bottom, the vegetable is put on top of the
potatoes and the entre is put on top of all of that. It looks good but you
have to dig through it all to get to one item.
The bathroom is sickly hysterical. The Dining Restaurant is clean
with piped in concert music and great soap and towels. The Easting
Place bathroom is like entering a really bad third world country.
There is always overflowing trash bins, no soap, little toilet paper
except for the wet wads on the floor and toilet seats that move when you
sit on them. It is like a free ride on a broken Ferris wheel.
I could write on and on about these Restaurants but I think you get
“the Drift” of why I prefer Dining.
Then my shower door broke. I called back. “How do you mean it’s
broken? Is the glass cracked?
“No, I can’t close the door all the way.” “What kind of door is it?” “I
don’t know. A regular shower door.”
“Does it slide, or swing shut.” “It swings but it’s cockeyed. Do you fix
that type of problem?”
Sigh. “I have to see it.”
When he arrived, he said he couldn’t do the job. I needed a man who
fixes shower doors. Why didn’t he mention that over the phone?
I called a shower door guy. “Can you give me an estimate over the
phone?” He said no.
Well, that’s a problem. I don’t know what the going rate is for fixing
shower door hinges.
How do I know if he’s going to overcharge me? Or if he can even fix
it. What if he says I need a whole new door? What are they going for
these days?
I know what you’re going to say. Depends on whether it’s a slider or
a swing door. Well, never mind, I’ll ask the knight in shining overalls
when he arrives to tackle the problem. Maybe I should buy a roll of duct
tape for myself, just in case.
What’s that you say? Not a good plan? Well, I don’t have a Plan B, but
okay. You’re probably right. What was I thinking?
Juneteenth
By: Rhonda Long / Exploring Your Roots
Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19th,
marks a pivotal moment in American history
– the day in 1865 when enslaved people in
Galveston, Texas, finally received news of their
freedom, a full two-and-a-half years after the
Emancipation Proclamation.
Today, Juneteenth is a time for all Americans to celebrate freedom. This
day also particularly inspires many African Americans to reflect on and
remember the incredible strength of our ancestors and learn about our
own family histories.
Genealogical research can be especially challenging for African
Americans due to the legacy of slavery and the ways it disrupted families
and erased records. However, there is a wealth of information and
resources, such as census records, vital records, military records, church
records, that can be used to unlock those details, which can be known, in
our family histories.
Genealogy is
not just about
dates and
names – it’s
about trying to
fully understand
the lives of all
the incredible
people who
made us who we
are today.
Every one of us have ancestors who faced immense challenges and
still managed to persevere and rise above those challenges. Genealogy
research is a great way to discover all of those incredible people who
paved the way.
As more of us uncover our family stories, we help create a more diverse
narrative of the African American experience. By piecing together these
histories, we challenge stereotypes, fill in gaps, and promote a more
accurate understanding of, not only our own families but also our
nation’s past.
So, this Juneteenth, take a step towards discovering your amazing
family history. It’s a way to honor the past, celebrate the present, and
build a brighter future where every ancestor’s story is remembered and
cherished.
A great way to start is by getting involved in a local genealogy group
like the Nevada African American Genealogy Society. In these groups,
you can meet other researchers who can help you as you complete your
family tree.
Don’t be afraid to start your family history adventure – your ancestors
are waiting to meet you!
Rhonda Long is the vice president of the Nevada African American
Genealogy Society. The Society meets on the 2nd Saturday of each
month at the Las Vegas Family Search Center 509 S. 9th Street, Las
Vegas. Contact her: Naagsvp@gmail.com
Remember Manual
Transmissions?
By: BJ Killeen / Down the Road
For those of us who grew up driving vehicles
with the radio being the most technologically
advanced feature on the car, learning to drive a manual transmission
was the norm. Manuals were preferred for performance, fuel efficiency,
and a fun-to-drive quotient that couldn’t be matched by an automatic.
Driving a vehicle with a stick shift wasn’t an issue back in the day
because road congestion wasn’t bad. For those who have spent time in
stop-and-go traffic in a big city, a manual transmission is only for those
with strong left legs… and an even stronger ability to manage stress.
In 2020, car buyers could choose from 80 different models if they
wanted a manual. Today, that number has dwindled to 35, with almost
half being high-priced performance vehicles.
My test car this month was the Toyota GR Corolla Circuit Edition. The
GR has enough exterior details to make it appear as if it stepped right out
of a Fast and Furious movie.
A manual transmission is practically mandatory for vehicles that look
and drive like this one, which is what the GR offers. But most people,
especially when they get to a certain age, prefer the advantages of a
manual without all the work.
That’s why manufacturers have created automatic transmissions that
are just as good (and often better) than manuals. Today’s automatics are
so advanced that they get better fuel efficiency than a manual, plus utilize
paddle shifters or a manual shift mode so you can experience the fun of a
manual - yet save your leg and your sanity.
Those who drive manuals call it the ultimate protection device from
car thieves since they can’t drive away once they break in.
Few new drivers will learn to drive a manual because, first, you’d have
to find a vehicle with a manual. They don’t have them in rental fleets,
and few driving schools offer to teach it.
Second, what’s the point if an automatic is better in every way? But for
those who love to drive, it’s hard to beat a manual transmission.
Is Your Estate in Order?
By: Jerry Creed / Trust Jerry
Isn’t it about time you finally got your estate in
order? Have you set up your family’s living trust
yet? (or kept up-to-date the one you have?)
These days, most homeowners are getting a Living Trust and rightly so,
because the Living Trust is the preferred estate planning vehicle. But few
are asking, “Exactly what kind of Trust vehicle am I getting?”
You see, when you buy a car and drive it off the lot, you’ll know if it’s
a lemon in a matter of a months. But when will you know whether your
Living Trust is a lemon?
Probably years from now, when you (or your spouse) are ill, disabled or
pass away -- when you and your loved ones most need the Trust to work
and when it’s too late to fix it!
Unfortunately, you may have been led to believe that all Living Trusts
are the same and the only difference is price. The truth is - All Living
Trusts are not created equally!
You and your loved ones can’t afford to just wait and see if the Living
Trust you’ll get (or have) is a “ticking time bomb.” Now is the time to
find out:
1. How a properly drafted Living Trust may make your loved ones’
inheritance virtually lawsuit, creditor and divorce-proof! (A Living Trust
that merely avoids probate and estate taxes isn’t good enough anymore!)
2. When one married partner dies, does your trust protect the
survivors’ assets to last their entire life against all creditors including the
government?
3. Why your Living Trust plan must be set up and maintained properly
or it may not avoid the expenses, delays and headaches of Probate Court
after you’ve gone.
4. Why the wrong person may be in charge of your affairs if you’re ill
or disabled and you may not be able to replace them!
5. If you’re married, how the wrong type of Trust can force your
surviving spouse to endure needless paperwork, legal and accounting
fees!
6. Why it’s important for your Trust to be able to adapt to the changed
situations and needs of your loved ones - after you’re gone! (such as
unexpected financial setbacks, illness, disability, or drug or alcohol
problems!)
Whether your estate is $250,000 or $2,500,000 (or more) we invite
you to attend an eye-opening and thought-provoking estate planning
seminar. Gain the knowledge that you need to make informed and
intelligent decisions.
Then, take advantage of a discounted consultation with one of our
attorneys to review your existing Living Trust or to discuss how a new
Trust plan may be custom-designed. Isn’t it worth an hour of your time to
make sure you, your spouse, family and loved ones get the protection you
deserve? See the below for the seminar date and time most convenient for
you and CALL NOW 702/806-7777.
By: Howard Galin / Happy Gardening
Now that we are into the summer watering
schedule, one of the most important
questions facing the desert gardener is how to properly irrigate while
also trying to conserve the dwindling water supply.
Remember, just because we are permitted to water six days each
week, it doesn’t mean that we should or need to!
The irrigation systems that were initially installed when many
of our homes were built may now be in need of upgrades or major
overhauls. The average irrigation system in Las Vegas has a lifespan of
approximately 20 years.
Under our landscapes, irrigation tubing is subjected to high
temperatures and high deposits of alkali salts that can lead to
deterioration, leaks and malfunctioning. Therefore, we must diligently
check the emitters for
damage, leaks and salt
buildup that can affect our
systems.
You can check for leaks
by looking for excessive wet
spots on the ground, or water
runoffs onto the street. If
emitters are clogged, remove
a group of emitters and
soak in a solution of vinegar/water overnight. This will remove alkali
deposits and the emitter will run properly.
The size of your plants/trees/bushes has increased and their root
systems have extended. Therefore, your irrigation system needs to
spread out and water usage increased.
Since all emitters are labeled with the hourly water discharge in
gallons (1/2-5gph) you may need to add additional emitters and/or
replace with higher capacity drips.
In addition, take steps to foster efficient water usage. Do not water
after recent rainfall. Irrigate before sun rise and after sunset to reduce
evaporation.
Add organic mulch around plants to prevent evaporation and lower
soil temperature. Choose drought tolerant plants when updating your
landscape.
Position emitters under the canopies of large bushes, plants and
trees where the active roots are located. Fertilize your landscape in early
spring and fall to encourage strong root systems.
Suggested Summer Watering Schedule :
Non-Native Plants: Twice a day for ½ hour,
Native Plants: 15-20 minutes, 1-2 days per week,
Cactus, Yucca and Agave: 1 time a week for 5-10 minutes
What’s Inside Matters Most
By: Eric Thurman / Thrive Spiritually
special day arrives, like Mother’s Day or her
A birthday, and Mom gets this gigantic box
of mixed chocolates. Being generous, she says
everyone can have one, just one, each day until they’re gone.
That’s when the intrigue begins. How do you pick the best piece when
you don’t know the filling? Some kids, who shall remain nameless, nibble
off the tiniest bottom corner to discover what’s inside. “Strawberry cream,
yuck.”
The next sneaky taste test reveals caramel. A winner. “I’ll eat that one.”
I admit, I’ve been known to fetch a toothpick for a tiny poke to reveal the
inner flavor with minimal invasion.
This candy escapade exposes a key life lesson. Just like with a box of
candy, what really counts most is the inside of us.
This is the essence of spiritual life. Inside of us is where God makes
his biggest moves. Look at this: “I pray that out of His glorious riches He
may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being.”
(Eph. 3:16)
The real me—the real you—is who we are inside, our private thoughts
and feelings. God’s promises are for the inner part of us.
As I get older, I think often about this verse from the Bible, “outwardly
we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.” (2
Cor. 4:16) Renewed day by day? This is what I want!
Deep within the innermost recesses of our hearts, each of us nurses old
hurts, fears, and anxieties. Left undisturbed, those old injuries and worries
are dreadfully toxic.
But in place of anger, confusion, and self-protection, something else
can happen inside of us. We can, quite literally, invite Jesus into the
innermost recesses of our lives. Tell Jesus he is your invited guest. Then, let
him become a permanent resident. That’s the first step to being renewed
day by day.
Growing older, well yes, some bits of me are in decline, but the promise
is that our private, inside selves can be renewed every day — because
what’s inside matters most.
Hunger in America is resurging again! Recent
news stories are painting a very bleak
picture that food insecurity, especially for children,
has gone from
bad to worse - much worse!
Two years ago, the federal government
estimated that 1 in 6 school aged
children (grades kindergarten to
6) were malnourished. Today, that
figure has risen to 2 in 6 as families
are struggling financially because of
inflation now estimated to be 3.6%
annually.
That doesn’t sound that bad
considering that a year ago inflation was running 9.6 % annually. But
these figures are national “averages”.
My reality tells a different story! When I look at what I spend on
groceries that 3.6% figure is a misnomer.
Case in point, the basket of groceries I buy are consistently the same
weekly. When I compare what my $100 spent last year weekly to what I
spend today ($115) that reflects an “inflated rate” of 15% higher!
Food Insecurity Worsens
Need a Lawyer?
By: Chuck Dean / Vet 2 Vet
Something important came along in 2018 that
needs a bit more broadcasting for veterans;
especially if they are
in need of legal representation and are
shuddering at the outrageous costs involved.
This little-known benefit came about when
the VA mobilized many federal agencies to offer
free legal services for Veterans. The Veterans’
legal services community came together
at the VA headquarters in Washington D.C.
and formulated the Legal Partnership, and
currently has many VA-based free legal clinics.
At last count, the VA hosts at least 170 free legal
clinics in its VA Medical Centers, Community
Based Outpatient Clinics and Vet Centers across
the country. They do this by partnering with
external legal service providers, such as local
bar associations, legal aid organizations, and
law school clinics.
Per VA Secretary Robert Wilkie, “Legal assistance stands high on the
list of many Veterans’ important, but unmet, needs. Our goal is to make
sure that our Veterans have access to, not only health care and disability
benefits, but to community legal services that are central to their overall
well-being.”
June 2024
That is unsustainable for many Nevada families supporting youngsters.
What are those in need to do?
One source of assistance are locally sponsored food banks that provide
needed food to all in need! Problem is, these food banks are having a
difficult time providing food for all in
need.
The demands for their help far exceed
their ability to provide. That’s where YOU
and ME come in.
One food bank is THREE SQUARE. As
I have written before, this is
THE organization I support and suggest
you do as well. Why? It’s because they get
far more bang-for- the- buck.
Every $1 donated produces three (3)
nourishing meals! As hard as that is to
imagine, it is a fact! Because of the enormous size of their organization,
their economies of scale far exceeds any of the other food banks.
If you are financially able to donate please do so. Every dollar you give
will feed someone for a full day! Contact them at: THREESQUARE.ORG.
Just like everyone else, Veterans often face stressful legal situations - such
as eviction, foreclosure, child support, or driver’s license revocations. Legal
issues can also affect a Veteran’s ability to gain/maintain employment, or
find proper housing, or they could even cause them to neglect getting
much needed medical treatment.
These free legal clinics are in place to
alleviate this kind of stress for the veteran, and
their family.
VA-based legal clinics, attorneys, and
paralegals have provided pro bono legal
assistance to Veterans since the 2018 formation
of this very needed benefit. During the first year
of operation, the legal clinic at the Washington
D.C. VA served more than 800 Veterans.
Today, throughout America, these volunteer
legal services are ready to serve Veterans, so
if there’s a need, check it out. The price was
paid by your duty to this country as an active
member of the military.
For more information about these VA legal
services for Veterans, visit:
www.va.gov/OGC/LegalServices.asp
Chuck Dean served as an Army paratrooper in Vietnam and
through that experience was led to address the many transitional
issues veterans struggle with. He is the author of several important
books for veterans.

Dogs, Cars & Hot
Summer Days
By: Annoula Wylderich / Our Best Friends
With regard to dogs in hot cars, it takes only 10
minutes for the temperature inside a car to
reach 100 degrees on a 75-degree day. Heatstroke
can occur within 15 minutes. If the dog is not fatally impacted, they
can suffer permanent organ damage.
If you see an animal in distress inside a car:
1. Check all the doors.
2. Write down the vehicle’s make, model and license plate number.
3. Contact nearby businesses asking them to page the owner. If they
can’t be located, call Metro’s non-emergency line (311) to alert them
of the situation. Personally, if I could not get through and the wait was
long, I would resort to dialing 911.
Note: It is illegal to break a car window to rescue a dog unless you
are a police or animal control officer, and this should be your last
resort to save the animal.
Haunted Las Vegas
By: Ali Guggenheim / Psychic Phenomenon
With all its fascinating history, it’s no wonder
that besides executive producer Zak Bagan’s
Haunted Museum, Las Vegas has numerous
haunted locations.
The Mob Museum in Las Vegas displays numerous devices for
murder, torture, and mass terror, used in some of the most violent
events in U.S. history. The building that holds these artifacts is the old
Vegas courthouse, where hundreds of mobsters and murderers are the
lost souls of shadowy figures. Their spirits haunt the halls.
The La Palazza mansion (The Devil’s Mansion), which is not open
to the public, was previously owned by mob enforcer Tony Spilotro
(the Ant) and Hole in the Wall Gang member. For decades, there were
rumors about the mansion and Spilotro’s dark past. Plenty of spirits
still linger.
Previous owners claimed these entities harassed them when females
showering would hear vulgar innuendos, the owner choked when
provoking them, and wine glasses mysteriously fell and shattered.
However, if response is slow and the animal appears to be in imminent
danger (wide eyes, extreme drooling, desperate attempts at escaping,
panicked and heavy panting, or completely unresponsive), document
the temperature, status of the dog, and the delay in law enforcement
response before making your decision to take any action.
If you plan to run errands on warm days, requiring you to leave your
pet in the car, leave them at home instead!
As another reminder, pavement gets very hot during our summers
and can burn sensitive paws. If the ground is too hot for your hand, it’s
too hot for your companion.
*Seniors on fixed incomes may have a challenging time meeting
their pets’ needs due to escalating costs of veterinary care and pet food.
Assistance is available, ranging from pet food pantries to low-cost spay/
neuter, vaccines, microchips and help with other medical procedures.
The Horseshoe Las Vegas, originally the MGM, had one of the most
tragic events (1980), where 85 guests died in a fire in their towers.
The rebuilt building was sold and renamed Bally’s, until most recently
when it was renamed Horseshoe Las Vegas.
Guests staying in the refurbished North Tower claim to experience
an overwhelming smell of smoke and hear people screaming from the
hallway. One of the most chilling visions is of a woman calmly playing
with two slot-machines with her dress engulfed in flames. This tragedy
led to some of the strictest Las Vegas fire regulations.
Since the construction of The Luxor, the belief has been that it is
haunted and cursed. Rumor had it that the black exterior and the
sacred eye attract dark energy to its host.
During construction, multiple workers’ deaths occurred; Legionella
bacteria killed a guest, two guests jumped from interior balconies, and
reports of moving objects and apparitions and ghostly hauntings were
sited - much of which connected with the Titanic Artifact Exhibition.
After the first three years of their Nile River ride, they shut it down
and drained the canal due to many frightened guests seeing ghosts
within the dark tunnels.
June Sneezes!
By: Mary Richard / Health Fitness
Am I the only one who thinks this Spring has
been more allergy-related than usual?
In July, I will have been living here 22 years. And
I’ve sneezed more this Spring
than former years. Having been
an allergy technician in my
former career, I know you can
develop allergies at any age.
I made the mistake last
month of opening the patio
door on a lovely sunny day to let
in some much needed fresh air.
Litle did I know that the pollen
count was elevated. I spent the
rest of the evening (and the
next day) sneezing.
I still see and understand why people are wearing facemasks. It’s not
to combat Covid, but to help with breathing difficulties from allergies.
All we can do to combat the allergy season is to keep our windows
and doors closed when the wind blows and to keep ourselves as safe as
possible. I’m not a great fan of taking medications, but when the nasal
faucet is running, I feel the need to take a pill… or two.
What Are Allergies? Allergy symptoms are caused by your
immune system mistaking harmless substances as threats and going
into defense mode. These substances are called allergens.
Common allergens include pollen, dust mites, pet dander and
mold spores. Allergies are not
contagious.
What is a Cold? You catch
a cold when a cold virus makes
its way into your respiratory
tract and your immune system
attacks it. The immune system
can’t always tell the difference
between allergies vs. a cold,
which is why symptoms are
similar. Colds are contagious.
We know the warmer weather
is right around the corner and had been teasing us for a few weeks, so
let’s do what we can to help keep our allergies under control.
By: Stan Popovich / Your Mental Health
There are many reasons why some people are
reluctant to get help for their mental health or
addiction issues. In addition, many people are not
sure what to do when encouraging
someone to get the help they need
for their mental health.
Here are some suggestions
on how to convince a person
struggling to get some
assistance.
1. Talk to the person instead
of talking at them: Nobody
wants to be lectured or yelled at. The
person who is struggling is scared
and they need help in overcoming
their fears and resistance to getting
some guidance. Treat others the way you would want to be treated if the
roles were reversed.
2. Find out why the person won’t get help: Ask the individual
who is struggling the reasons why they are reluctant to get some
assistance. It might take a few tries, however, try to find out what is
stopping your friend from getting treatment.
3. Address the reasons why the individual won’t get
help: Once you get the reasons why he or she won’t get some help, the
34
Convincing Someone To Get Help
June 2024
next step is to find the ways to address those factors that are preventing
the individual from getting assistance.
4. Find someone who understands: Try to find someone
who used to struggle with their mental health for their advice. For
example, a person who used drugs and alcohol in the past could use
their past experiences and insights
to convince the individual to seek
treatment. A person who used to
struggle with addiction or their
mental health may be better able
to relate to the person who is
struggling.
5. Get them to attend a
support group: Another way to
convince someone to get help is to
get them to go to a mental health
support group. A person who goes
to a support group can at least
listen to those who are also struggling, which may convince the person
to get some assistance.
6. Be persistent: Continue to be persistent with your loved ones in
getting them the help they need. If things do not improve, continue to
find other alternatives in getting the person some help.
America the Beautiful
By: Pat Alexander / Art of Entertaining
Some years ago I traveled the country for six
months in a little travel
trailer called a Puck, hauled
by a little red Datsun. A Datsun? Does anyone even
remember them?
We visited 47 states on that trip and I loved every
moment. Aside from the splendor of our beautiful
country, it was surprising to see the scenery
changing from state to state and to know when you
were passing from one state to another.
The people we met, however, were the same -
unfailingly kind and friendly; from the mechanic
in Illinois, who had never seen a Datsun, to the
hairdresser in Nebraska, who came after closing
to do my hair, to the farmer in Iowa, who gave
directions so slowly I thought I’d fall asleep listening, to the toll taker
in Massachusetts who finally understood me when I pronounced
“Gloucester” the preferred “Glostah.”
I love pizza and trying to find it while traveling was almost impossible.
When we arrived in Bend, we were told of a restaurant reputed to have
the best pizza in Oregon. Our hopes weren’t high since the last place I
ordered a cheese pizza asked if I wanted tomato sauce on it!
Anyway, now knowing how to order a pizza in Oregon, I asked for a
“cheese and tomato” pizza. When our order was called, my husband
walked back to the table with the pizza held high in his hand, grinning
from ear to ear.
My pizza arrived – with American cheese and
sliced tomatoes! So much for knowing how to
order!
At one point, we shared breakfast at a campsite
with a young couple who invited us to dinner
when we passed through their city. She served
these potatoes and I still make them occasionally
as a reminder of that great trip. Try them for
something different.
Carla’s Potatoes: Peel 6-7 Russet potatoes.
Cook until slightly tender. Sauté 1/3 cup diced
onion in ½ stick butter until translucent.
Add 1 can Cream of Mushroom soup, 1-1/2 cups
grated Cheddar cheese and 1 pint sour cream. Stir
until combined. Grate potatoes, fold in all ingredients. Place in greased
9x13 pan.
Top with ½ cup Parmesan cheese. Dot with ½ stick butter and bread
crumbs. Bake at 350 for one hour.
her cooking, parties and interior design, and consults on kitchen
and bath remodels.
love to look at Scripture to be reminded that
I I am loved just as I am. To remember that
everything is going to be okay, no matter what.
But sometimes, the inspiration I need is alive and thriving in the words
of friends.
I have a friend who is dealing with the third death in his family in the
past few years. He recently posted, “Sending love and prayers to anyone
who is struggling and dealing with grief. You are not alone…”
A dear friend from High School often sends reminders to not take
life so seriously. Recently, she wrote, “To all my peeps: Remember, it’s
better to be over the hill than under it!” Yes, laughter is always good
medicine!
THE SAINT & THE SINNER
Inspiration in Scripture
Feeling a little slump in your relationship?
Want to tighten things up, get some zing in
your step? Have an affair.
Seniors go through years with the same partner, who they love, but
time has taken its toll. Days become humdrum and the spark dulls.
Chances are your relationship started with an affair during the freelove
period of the ‘60s and early ‘70s. Bring back that era and do it
again.
Being the first generation to grow up during the sexual revolution,
you made love at anytime, anywhere, and sometimes with anyone.
Today, don’t hesitate and tell your partner that you two are running
away. Steal kisses while looking for hotels or places to meet.
Half the fun is talking about this secret and making plans. Drive
in separate cars, from different directions to a strange, out-of-the-way
place for your liaison and come together.
Act out the fantasy and make your partner your lover. Remember to
pack silk garments, perhaps a toy or two, and anything else that helps
peak your sexual power. Try sex in new positions, ones you dared not
try before.
My friend Sierra encourages herself and others with the following
words: “You are enough. You are so enough. It is unbelievable how
enough you are!”
Sometimes we all just need to hear some thoughts to remind us that,
despite the struggles and the challenges, we are exactly where we are
supposed to be, living the life and experiencing the experiences that are
meant for us!
I was in Los Angeles last month for a few days. While away, I still
made sure to take my quiet time - my time to walk and get centered.
While walking, I noticed some words stenciled on the side of a
building, credited to “Trusty Scribe.” It read, “For all the storms you’ve
weathered, all the heartbreaks you’ve suffered, all the physical and
emotional scars you carry, all the setbacks, the bruises, the failures
and defeats — these are the things that make you whole and complete.
This is what makes you beautiful and unique. You are not alone.
You are loved. You are golden!”
I love to find inspiration in Scripture, but even more, I love to receive
lessons from the people with whom I share this life. My “peeps” are
some of my greatest faith heroes and their communications are much
needed current-day scripture!
Let’s all try to be living scripture today, by saying something to lift
another person on their walk.
Then, anything goes. Let the juices flow. For those hard-to-do
positions, try as much as your senior bodies are able, laugh at any flops,
and enjoy the moment.
Be the lover you always dreamed of being. In that no-tell-motel, dim
the lights or fling open the drapes. Whatever suits your fancy.
Drink wine and eat icy grapes. Turn off the phones and let these few
hours become your secret, hidden from everyone in the world. The
exhilarating freedom will bring you to heights you have not felt in
many years.
An affair can be a climax to a wonderful moment. It can be quiet
cuddling, just knowing you can share this tender moment after all
these years.
Whatever happens during these stolen hours, revel in it. Laugh out
loud at the audacity of having an affair that you will brag about later.
Seduce each other as if you were strangers meeting for the first time
for a magnificent fling. Enjoy the tryst of a lifetime.
Moving Your $ to Protect It
By: Dan Roberts / Publisher
Here’s a new one and seniors can potentially lose their life savings
over this scam.
Scammers are either calling or emailing you supposedly from
your financial institution (be it a bank or your brokerage company)
advising that “they” are spotting fraud or criminal activity on one of
your accounts.
They strongly urge you “protect” your money. In trying to “help”
sometimes they ask for your verification codes, or suggest you move
money from your bank, investment, or retirement account.
Of course, it’s a scam. A couple of reminders:
Never, never move or transfer your money to “protect
it.” Your money is fine where it is, no matter what they say or how
urgently they say it. Moving it means you’ll lose it, not protect it.
Someone who says you have to move your money to protect it is a
scammer. Period.
Never, never share a verification code. Ever. Banks use
these codes in online banking to prove you’re really you. If you share
that code, the scammer can use it to prove they’re you.
No caller (especially someone from your bank’s fraud department)
will ever ask for the verification code. That’s always a scam.
Stop and check it out. If you’re worried, call your real bank,
broker, or investment advisor. Use the number you find on your
statement not the telephone number or website address the scammer
provided.
So what should Vegas Voice readers do when Mr. (or Ms.) Bad Guy
contacts you? It really is easy. Take a breath,
think, and don’t hesitate to DELETE that email.
And if you receive that telephone call, hang
up the phone, hang up the phone and…
HANG UP THE PHONE!
Don’t give these SOBs a moment of your
time. You’re better than all of them.
In Defense of Dawdling
By: Susan Goldfein / Susan’s Unfiltered Wit
Dawdling has a bad rap. Check the dictionary:
Move slowly, take one’s time; waste time;
idle; linger; take more time than necessary; to
spend time without haste or purpose.
Sounds like a vice. Like a person
who dawdles is first cousin to a
sloth. And isn’t sloth a deadly sin?
If so, then I’m a sinner!
We learn at a young age that
dawdling is morally undesirable. On
a list of “Do’s and Don’ts” dawdling
falls in the “Don’t” column. “Don’t
dawdle over breakfast. You’ll be late
for school.”
Or “Stop dawdling and go do
your homework if you want to get
into Harvard. So, what if you’re
only in second grade.”
Later, we’re the ones issuing the
anti-dawdling warnings to our kids.
We rush to get them to school and perhaps ourselves to work. After
school, there are appointments, games, lessons, rushing with no time
to spare.
June 2024
Don’t forget shopping, preparing meals, laundry, and oh, yes, the
family dog. Weekends bring little relief.
No extra hour of sleep because our future A-Rod or Serena Williams
must be chauffeured to their games. After all, excelling in athletics looks
good on that Harvard application. Life is the antithesis of dawdling; it’s
perpetual motion.
The day finally arrives when your
last child leaves for Punxsutawney
State Junior College (you tried your
best), and the color of life changes
from fire engine red to salmon. Not
quite peaceful pink, because you’re
still working. And there remains the
matter of the dog.
Dawdling is on hold. But
eventually you cross the threshold.
You’re a retired person of a certain
age. Life finally takes on a pinkish
glow.
I do my best dawdling at breakfast.
I’ve never been a morning person,
and frankly don’t understand them.
I’ve always relied on that first cup of coffee to get my engine going,
whereas morning people act like they had a caffeine drip inserted in
their veins at bedtime. Getting myself and others out the door each day
was difficult, like slogging through peanut butter. Nevertheless, I did
what I had to do.
But now, the mornings are luxurious. My life’s finally in step with my
Circadian rhythm, which doesn’t awaken until 10 am.
I’m usually up around seven, and enthusiastically looking forward
to taking my time. I exchange a few grunts with my husband, who’s
more of a morning person than I but remains horizontal until he
smells the coffee.
I don’t mind. I make my way downstairs followed by the dog who
thankfully does not require communication as I let him outside.
While leisurely sipping the second cup, I watch the news on TV. I
reach for the crossword puzzle as a distraction from the latest depressing
predicament.
If I’m successful, I reach for a second puzzle from the other
newspaper. How much time has elapsed? An hour? More? The beauty
is it doesn’t matter.
No early morning appointments, please. No breakfast dates, no golf
games, no doctor’s visits if possible. I’m way too busy dawdling and
loving every precious second.
At some point I do activate. I’m happily productive for the remaining
hours, right up until bedtime. Because tomorrow morning brings a
brand-new opportunity to do my very best to elevate dawdling to an
art form.
Celeb’s Son Enriches
Presentation
By: Kathy Manney / Around Our World
Actor and Nevada Lieutenant Governor (1954
-1962) Rex Bell was known for his warm
personality and good looks. On opening day, he was the Tropicana
Hotel’s ribbon cutter.
Twenty-years ago, I had the opportunity to visit the 400,000-acre
Walking Box Ranch near Searchlight, Bell’s former home. The spread
includes a 5,000 square feet two-story Spanish style main house and
guest house.
When I visited the property, it was owned by a mining company.
The Bell home was their company guest house. Today, the property is
maintained by the Bureau of Land Management.
Former Walking Box
Ranch owners, Rex Bell
and Clara Bow were wellknown
Golden Era celebs
and Nevada residents.
Their 1931 marriage set
Hollywood’s trend for quick
Las Vegas weddings. The
couple had two sons.
Clara’s film roles
portrayed a sexually
liberated flapper. Rex was
a true cowboy as well as a
movie cowboy. Hollywood
friends frequently came by train for an escape destination, disembarking
in Nippon to visit the ranch.
Rex opened a western-wear store on Fremont Street. He died in 1962
while campaigning to become Nevada governor.
After my visit, I was asked to give a talk and photo presentation about
the ranch and its former celebrity occupants. Even though having
marginal knowledge about them, I accepted.
Before the program, I was told Rex Bell, Jr. had heard about the
presentation and planned to attend. What had I gotten myself into?
Ahead of the audience arrival, the door opened. A tall, lean man
entered. His build like that once associated with the old west. His pressed
jeans held with a belt with a large silver buckle.
I had never even seen a photograph of Rex Bell, Jr. yet knew this was
him
We eased into conversation. I shared my photographs of his former
family home. He was gracious and touched while reminiscing.
When the presentation began, we gave it together. He discussed the
slides of his parent’s ranch and answered audience questions.
What could have been a borderline success became an enriched,
memorable and enjoyable experience.
Kathy draws her articles from a diverse personal background. She
hopes readers enjoy her column as much as she enjoys the writing and
sharing.
Campus Chaos
By: Liz Breier / This & That
As a senior citizen I have lived long enough to
witness many riots, disturbances, protests, and
marches. I believe that all those instances had a
common theme – a group of people wanting
something.
The race riots of
the 1960s called for
desegregation. There were
marches on Washington
calling for jobs. The Viet
Nam War era saw plenty of
protests – not all of them
peaceful, but the goal of
the participants was to see
an end to a war that was
being fought on foreign
soil by our men and
women.
In the late ‘60s and
early ‘70s women wanted
equality in the workplace and the rise of the Women’s Liberation
Movement. In the early 2020s there were riots calling for defunding the
police.
The theme of the past riots and protests, peaceful or otherwise, was
that all were calling for change. What we see today, mainly on college
campuses, is something else.
Calls for “From The River to The Sea”, signs with swastikas (the symbol
of the death of 6,000,000
Jews), spitting on Jewish
students, personal physical
attacks, are all something
different.
Truly, if the point of
the protests is to end the
War in Gaza, then say
that, because thankfully,
we live in a nation that
provides us the ability to
speak freely. However, the
precious right of Freedom
of Speech afforded by the
1 st Amendment does not
protect those who incite
riot or promote physical harm or block individuals from lawful entry.
Protesting in favor of an end to war and release of hostages is one
thing, but when it escalates to a point where a segment of the population
is made to feel afraid, or is estopped from going to class, or a cafeteria or
a library, then I fear we have seen the protests go too far.
In the past, I do not recall any dissidents hiding their identity when
they were protesting or marching. In fact, just the opposite.
I saw marches where the participants walked proudly arm-in-arm
chanting for change. If their cause is just, what are these protestors
hiding from?
Perhaps they do not have the courage of their convictions. Perhaps
some are contemplating illegal activity and want to avoid detection.
It seems to me that if they truly believe in their position of calling for
the death of Jews they would gladly state their cause, but instead, I see
them telling reporters they do not wish to speak and turning their backs.
So what is the purpose of all the chaos, especially on college campuses?
As a Jew I believe it is to let us know that we are not wanted, we are in
danger and they would eradicate us if they could.
The anti-Semitic rants give me and many fellow Jews the sense that we
are living what many experienced in Germany in the1930s.
I pray that our government will not succumb to the chants, turmoil
and threats and avoid another Kristallnacht. But we cannot hide in attics
and basements as once was the fate of Jews.
We must speak out, speak up and display our Judaism with pride. Just
as the protesters and agitators believe they have a right to spew their
vitriol, so too do Jews have a right to freely (and without harassment)
enter any campus, building or facility.
