NJPAC’s education initiative, kicked off before
the Newark campus was built, is now one of
New Jersey’s largest providers of arts education
programs for children, annually reaching almost
100,000 students (from Pre-K to Grade 12),
teachers and families. Thousands of New Jersey
kids who experience world-class performances
on Arts Center stages go on to classes where they
can study dance, jazz, acting, musical theater,
hip hop arts and culture, and more — either in our
Center for Arts Education, or in classes taught by
NJPAC teaching artists at schools around the state.
NJPAC’s professional development opportunities for
teachers — classes and workshops through which
classroom teachers strengthen their skills in multiple
areas like choreographing a school musical, creating
an original play or playing the recorder — have
added exponentially to the arts education offerings
at Greater Newark schools and surrounding areas.
The more arts classes
students take, the
less likely they are
to drop out — by
nearly 20% across
the arts disciplines.
for the Elementary Music Classroom
Grades: K – 5
Curriculum Connections: Social Studies
Transport your students through introductory
activities to the world of jazz music. This workshop
offers practical tools to activate student curiosity
and foster a deeper appreciation for this uniquely
American musical genre. Play, clap and sing along
to New Jersey jazz pioneers such as Sarah Vaughan,
Woody Shaw and Wayne Shorter, among others.
Music Education for the Modern Ear
Grades: 6 – 12
Curriculum Connections: Social Studies
What does popular music have to teach us about
music and culture? How can we understand what
students are listening to as a way to unlock their
potential? The use of modern music in music
education can advance techniques, alter or
expand practice and influence the educational
setting. In this workshop, we’ll discover techniques
to engage students using the modern
music that matters to them.
Recorder Fundamentals
Grades: K – 6
Curriculum Connections: Math
In this interactive workshop, teachers will create
a creative classroom environment with procedures
and routines for learning the recorder. We will
explore the fundamentals including posture, tone,
air, hand position and B-A-G to beginner students.
All students will learn “Hot Cross Buns” with
options for differentiation.
Teaching Literacy Through Theater
Grades: K – 12
Curriculum Connections: Language Arts,
Literacy, Social Studies
Through this interactive workshop participants will
delve into a specific element of storytelling; such
as conflict, setting, character, or theme to stage
theatrically. Participants will understand and use the
actor’s toolbox to guide students on bringing a story
to life. Theater practices are an effective approach
to help students further their comprehension
and relationship with a given text or story.
standards
Throughout time, the arts have served as a distinctive vehicle
for self-discovery and a means of understanding the world in
which we live. As the state of New Jersey continues to transform
public education to meet the needs of a changing world and the
21st century workforce, capitalizing on the unique ability of the arts
to develop creativity, critical thinking and innovation skills is critical
to the success of our students. The arts infuse our lives with meaning
on nearly all levels — generating significant creative and intellectual
capital. They inspire creative and critical thinking and encourage
agency and inclusion. A well-designed sequential arts program
promotes responsible decision making, enhances self-awareness,
builds self-esteem and self-management skills and helps students
build relationship and collaboration skills; all of which are essential
to prepare New Jersey students for post-secondary success.
