Rabbi Meeka’s Musings
Shalom everyone!
Shalom everyone! I don’t know about you, but I am ready to change
gears and reduce stress, meaning, that I am ready for summer,
outdoors and engaging in activities that nourish my soul and entire
being.
Working in our yard, clearing out old dead leaves and branches
which remained on our lawn since last Fall; making room for
greenery and colorful blooms to spring and spread out everywhere.
Observing all God’s creatures coming out to enjoy the warmth,
critters like snakes, foxes, songbirds and lizards of all shapes and
colors….
Rabbi Meeka's Musings
Continued
I need a break from the news. I need a break from worrying….
Since July of last year, I have been cultivating a hidden passion that’s been lying
dormant since my childhood: horseback riding, and horsemanship. For almost a
year now I have been taking weekly horseback riding lessons, while working in the
stables before and/or after our sessions, alongside my beloved instructor Lynn
King.
I think that moving to an area populated with stables, farming and farm life has
given me the opportunity to fulfil this dream of mine. Horseback riding has been
so important in helping me to develop emotional and spiritual connection with
these majestic and comforting beings. Being with horses has been essential to my
mental health, especially since October 7th. And this summer, I intend to do a lot
more of that: go on trail-rides, and volunteer my time caring for horses in the farms
where I ride.
This is my teacher Lynn, her horse
and my riding buddy Masa:
Masa and I are having fun!
Rabbi Meeka's Musings
Continued
Even in Judaism we acknowledge the often necessary "refreshing break."
The Chovot HaLevavot, in Avodat Elokim, 4 (Chovot HaLevavot or The Duties of the Hearts is the
primary work of the Jewish scholar Bahya ibn Paquda, c. 11th century CE) said that “…when a
person needs a break from his/her learning or work, a hobby is considered necessary and actually
- obligatory.” Clearly, Rabbi Bahya considers hobbies as a necessary means, like breathing.
Rav Kook (Abraham Isaac Kook 1865 – 1935, the first Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of British Mandatory
Palestine; considered one of the fathers of religious Zionism) wrote that “…there's an ideal in
hiking: it is a mitzvah to walk in Israel.” Rav Kook encouraged doing yard work, woodwork and
really, anything constructive and relaxing (settling the Land, Chatam Sofer, Suka, 35). Rav Kook
said that part of the beauty of our tradition is that there is Godliness everywhere: in sculpturing,
carpentry, musicking, writing poetry, painting, and any other types of hobbies.
As summertime and breaktime approaches, I invite you to reach deep within yourself and ask:
“what can I do this summer, that I have been wanting to do, and haven’t given
myself the opportunity to do so yet? Perhaps pick up a musical instrument? Painting?
Gardening? Pottery? Writing? How about gymnastics? Or scrapbooking?
What is that special hidden gem within your yearning soul?
Summertime is a fantastic opportunity to take a little break out of our usual
activities, and try out something new, or continue to develop a relatively different
hobby you’ve started recently.
I will be delighted to hear about your adventures: your special vacation, your
special activity over the summer; a passion that brings you joy, and out of
your established routine! Write to me! rabbi@templeadasshalom.org
Happy summer.
With love, always,
Rabbi Meeka
President's Message
Mark Wolkow
Many thanks!
Good things to remember!
The TAS Annual Meeting will be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your fellow
members’ volunteer recognitions, including Nord Award recipients Wendy
Drabinski and Melissa Immel. We will also thank departing and install new Board
Members and catch up with all the recent and upcoming Temple happenings. Enjoy
the camaraderie of friends as well as a tasty catered dinner. Click here to register. The
event will be held at the shul on June 8 starting at 6:00 p.m.
That will give you almost 24 hours to recover from our semi-annual Rock Shabbat,
which will take place on Friday, June 7th. This has been hugely popular, with just the
right mix of upbeat liturgical melodies and rock tunes you can’t help but tap your foot
to… or sing along! Rabbi Meeka, Mike Mullis, the Choir, and the TAS Band have been
working hard to make this the best one yet!
I am proud to report that the TAS Board has approved a Temple Code of Ethics.
Hear more on this important policy at the Annual Meeting.
Lastly, we have one Board position to fill - the Board Secretary. Small time
commitment. No experience necessary. Looks good on a resume. And you get to
know some great people and have a better understanding of how the Temple
operates. Please contact me if you or someone you know might be interested.
Kehillah MAGNET
Sarah O’Donnell & Joel Yoffee
Shalom Temple Adas Shalom Community!
Kehillah MAGNET is busily planning for our 2024-2025 school
year, and registration will continue throughout the summer.
If you know of families with children in Grades Pre-K
through ten who want their children to learn about their
Jewish culture, history, and traditions, please send them our
way to secure their materials!
We are currently looking to expand the number of educators that
we have on staff, as well as move to an individualized model of
teaching Mid-Week Hebrew. If you are interested in learning more
about teaching or tutoring for the 2024-2025 school year, please
email Sarah O’Donnell at principal@templeadasshalom.org today!
As we move into the summer, I would like to thank Joel
Yoffee for his many years of service as our Kehillah MAGNET
Religious School Chair and teacher. Ashira Quabili will be
stepping into the role of committee chair as of June 1st, and
we are fortunate to have Joel continue as a substitute for our
school!
I also want to welcome Alexa McAndrew as our incoming second
grade teacher and welcome back Jason Allen as our incoming
eighth/nineth grade teacher for the 2024-2025 school year!
Please mark your calendars for our Religious School Rummage Sale which will be
taking place in our social hall from Friday, July 12th – Sunday, July 14th. This sale is
almost pure profit for our school, and we will need much support (and many donated
items) to make it happen. I am currently seeking volunteers to set up the sale, run the
stands, and bake items. Our baked goods such as challah and other desserts brought in
excellent revenue! Email Sarah with how you can help!
Rummage Sale Drop Off Dates: Saturday, July 6 and Sunday, July 7
Please check out the temple calendar for all upcoming events and see you soon
Throughout the summer, squeezed in among beach trips, mountain treks, and family
reunions, our Sisterhood board will be busy preparing for next year – the ideas have
been flying and the excitement building! We are expecting fun, enticing, and fulfilling
events and activities to match our growing membership! This year, our plans include
keeping our traditional offerings and adding new mini events that may interest a
smaller segment of our membership. Let us know what you want to do with a couple of
Sisterhood pals, and we will get it on the calendar, too – because this is your Sisterhood
and your choices –
Pat Wolkow
Thankful that we have been quiet on our Temple campus!
We have submitted another grant application. We received news that
since the requests have far exceeded the funds available, the agency
needs additional time to review and make the best choices of
awardees. We will search for other funding, but if anyone knows of
other grant funding available, please notify Pat Wolkow or DeNae
Harmon.
In the meantime let’s not take for granted what we have gained by
being careless or relaxed in our safety behavior.
Keep exterior doors secure by checking that they close tightly, no
propping open!
Sanctuary and Social Hall doors should only be held open by an
individual person so that they close when unattended and the
locking magnets can secure us in a lockdown emergency.
Never admit strangers into the building.
Reread safety tips in sanctuary pews to remind yourselves of
emergency actions.
Wear your name badges.
Report any oddities you notice, no matter how silly. Be aware!!!
Keep hallways, and sanctuary pathways between seats clear for
swift and safe exiting.
