Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Mayer’s Tavern, an iconic eatery located on the corner of
3rd Avenue and Wilson Drive on the Cape May harborfront.
The vibe: Back in the day, Mayer’s was renowned as a dive bar
where sometimes-rowdy fishermen and sometimes-rowdy locals
would go to drink cheap beer and let off some steam. It was, in other
words, the closest little Cape May got to the Wild West. But, damn,
those fried scallops were so good that even non-rowdy folks would
still head off the beaten track to brave the rowdy elements and enjoy
a legendary Cape May dish. In 2018, the Laudeman family (who own
the nearby Lobster House) took it over and reopened Mayer’s, after a
clever, thoughtful renovation that retained the harborfront character,
while seriously sprucing up the decor and the menu.
The drinks: The beers may not be as cheap as they once were, but
you can still drain a cold Bud or Coors for a reasonable $5. For the more
crafty-minded, there’s half-a-dozen craft beers on tap. A well-curated
wine list includes several of the hot orange varieties (not hot to
the touch, obviously). For one of us, though, the highlight of the drinks
menu is always the Sardinian Sunset, which is just a nice name for a
classic Negroni. They do it right at Mayer’s.
The food: Those famous scallops are still on the menu, and they’re
still unmissable. Other highlights are the gigantic black kale salad, an
always-excellent cheeseburger and the yogurt-marinated chicken.
Truth be told, chicken isn’t something us cool cats often order for an
entrée, but the Mayer’s offering is among the best on the island.
Celebrity sighting: Sitting at the next table were Tony Lombardi
and Theresa McGlade, the owners of Backstreet in West Cape May.
Those guys know good food, so that’s always a good sign. They’re totally
worth a visit as well, by the way. :-)
The takeaway: Right now, Mayer’s is closed Monday and Tuesday.
But they are planning on adding Monday back into the rotation sometime
this summer.

Check out why Congress Hall’s restaurant is a favorite
of locals as well as hotel guests. They serve classic
tavern food for breakfast, lunch or dinner, with a
choice of indoor and outdoor dining.
The Boiler Room has a chic industrial vibe with
exposed brickwork, stainless steel table tops and a
dance floor that’s often bopping. Feast upon brickoven
pizza with draft beers.
Congress Hall’s lounge got a very groovy, very sexy
renovation. The bar was enlarged (and moved) and
there are all sorts of seating nooks from which to
enjoy great drinks and a great vibe.
Comfy joint in the middle of the mall, featuring a raw
bar, surf-n-turf entrées, sandwiches and burgers, plus
outside tables for some great people-watching!
Enjoy a fun and creative twist on an age-old favorite.
From wild combinations, to classic ingredients, there’s
plenty you’ll want to try when you visit.
Serving great classic comfort food in a beautiful
location with a historic vibe. Chef Sherry Sheldon
created a menu that offers pub-style fare while
embracing the farm-to-table concept.
The Kulkowitz family’s latest culinary adventure.
They’re bringing a new vibe to the Cape May dining
scene with menu featuring local food with global
flavors.
As you’d expect of an Irish pub, this is the place to get

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
For a columnist whose beat is bird
watching in Cape May, there is never
any shortage of copy. But May at the
“Migration Mainline” is challenging.
With spring migration at its peak and
multiple events on the schedule, a birder needs
48 hours in a day and a two-week extension.
Spring migration began in February with the
first northbound waterfowl and will wind
down in June when the last of the northbound
shorebirds straggle through. Speaking of
shorebirds, the International Team of shorebird
banders is once again assembled on the
Bayshore, netting, weighing and tagging the
hosts of northbound Red Knot whose dependence
upon the eggs of the horseshoe eggs is
firmly established. Cape May is the crucial
refueling depot for the birds between South
America and the Canadian Arctic. This year’s
knot numbers are up, the best showing in
years and a tribute to the conservation efforts
that safeguarded breeding crabs.
But, there’s more. The New Jersey
Audubon’s annual spring Birding Festival has
come and gone. So, too, the 41st World Series
in which 90 teams vied to tally the most bird
species in New Jersey in a 24-hour period.
This year, teams from Maryland and Cornell
tied with 213 species. Not bad.
And still more… On May 17 a Common
Swift, a resident of Europe and Asia was
recorded in the skies over Cape May. Larger
than our native Chimney Swift and having
a forked, not a blunt tail, the bird could not
escape the net of birding skills cast by local
birders. Rarities like this are periodic and
unpredictable but always result in a boost
to the economy. Seeing a Common Swift in
North America is akin to sinking the winning
shot at the NCAA tournament.
But my big news is the two pairs of starlings
nesting in the eves of the shed in our
yard. One pair, busy discarding fecal sacks,
has young in the nest. The other still carrying
nesting material into the nest. The disparity
fascinates me, as does the different partiality
accorded the starling and the swift. Both are
Old World species. But the swift is celebrated,
and the starling is disdained. Imported into
the US in 1890 by a Shakespeare zealot who
recalled Hotspur’s celebration of the bird in
Henry IV part 1, concluded North America
would be enriched by the birds presence — a
lapse in judgement that resulted in the cavity
nesting birds spread across the continent. So
why is the nesting of starlings newsworthy?
I’m an equal opportunity observer and herald
from immigrant stock myself.

Who is a fan of “who?” No, no,
not the rock band, but Dr. Who, a
show that’s been around as long
as the rock band but with way
more changes. Dr. Who wasn’t a
favorite of mine growing up. By the time I
started watching, they were on perhaps their
fourth or fifth of what has now become 15
actors who played the part.
For those who don’t know, Dr. Who is a
character traveling randomly through time
and space (more specifically, the universe)
and gets into shenanigans wherever (or
whenever) the time/space machine lands. The
show is more aligned with Star Trek than Star
Wars because it’s less epic than episodic. It
started in 1963 and has taken some breaks. Up
until recent years, the lead actor has always
been a white male. That ended in 2017 when
Jodie Whittaker became the first female to
play the lead. She was the 12th lead in the role.
The new incarnation of the show stars
its first black lead, Ncuti Gatwa. He travels
in his vessel called TARDIS (stands for “Time
The Movie Column

and Relative Dimension in Space”), which
looks like a police phone booth you’d find in
London. Gatwa’s Dr. Who is a spot-on character.
He is generally unshaken by sharp turns
of events, and he appears to be in control no
matter how desperate the situation becomes.
The new episodes, which are produced by
the BBC and appear on Disney+, are not what
I remember from the original. There is more
poignant storytelling and observations that I
suppose the Brits would call “brilliant.” Of the
four shows so far, three truly resonated. The
fourth I’ll chalk up to “darn, sometimes I just
don’t understand everything British.”
Gatwa is absolutely cheeky in the role
(ooh, was that TOO British?). He lets the
audience decipher the deeper meaning behind
the story before he puts it into perspective.
The stories are cool, the cast is diverse, and in
the end you’re left with a much more enriching
experience than I ever had watching in
the past.
Russell T. Davies is a Welsh screenwriter
and producer who worked on the 2005 revival
of the series and this reboot. He also created
the popular Queer as Folk and others. He was
only a few months old when Dr. Who first aired
in 1963, yet he continues the legacy nicely.
It’s not lost on me that lately I’ve been
reviewing sci-fi and end-of-the-world shows
and movies. What can I say? Other offerings
look long and boring. I’d like your opinion on
what’s cool in any category that’s not fantasy.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Cape May Restaurant Week
Dining out is one of life’s treats. It’s
a luxury to sit and be served. Not
only do you not have to cook the
food, you don’t have to procure the
ingredients or clean up. You can
choose, on a whim, a dessert that takes hours
to prepare. Your companions are likely to be
on their best behavior, and you can enjoy your
after-dinner coffee without thinking about
loading the dishwasher or wrapping leftovers.
In Cape May, where we are lucky to have many
great restaurants, it’s easy to forget that only
about 20 percent of Americans get to eat out
in a given year. Restaurant Week is a great
time to boost that number.
Cape May’s runs from June 2 to 9, with
participating restaurants offering fixed-price
menus designed to highlight their specialties.
It’s a good deal for regular customers,
and it offers a chance for new customers
to venture out of their comfort zones. My
favorite example is a newly adult friend who
is using Restaurant Week as an excuse to
finally taste the dish behind his favorite child-
hood movie — Ratatouille. Maison Bleu Bistro,
at 653 Washington Street, is offering Pasta
Ratatouille on its $55 menu. My friend has
avoided it thus far not because he fears he
won’t like it, but because his inner child is
convinced it merits a bit of atmosphere and
the je ne sais quoi that usually means he can’t
afford the restaurant. With the set price, you
know how your meal fits into your budget.
Other diners appreciate events like
Restaurant Week because chefs tend to show
off a little, with dishes like lollipop lamb chops
at Backstreet Simply Delicious, the bourbon
glazed sweet potato at the Chalfonte, or truffle
mac and cheese at Pier House. These are
dishes you might be able to make for yourself,
but they are tricky enough to give you pause.
Timing lamb is an art, and if I’m cooking
flounder at home, I’m not topping it with lobster
as the Lobster House does. In addition,
the chefs make creative use of simple ingredients.
It feels indulgent to let Union Park
remind me that I love beet salad, to sample the
Washington Inn’s take on avocado toast, or to
introduce a teen to curry at Exit Zero.
Most participating restaurants have
their special, fixed price Restaurant Week
menus posted online at cmrestaurantweek.
com. Generally, they include an appetizer,
entree, and dessert. Beverages, tax, and gratuity
are not included, except where noted.
Reservations are suggested. And, if you miss
Restaurant Week, look out for early bird discounts
throughout the summer.

Bulldog who came to the shelter when her
owner could no longer care for her. She loves
to be with people and needs a refresher on
leash walking with her strong and fast pace.
Xena’s previous owner claimed she lived with
children, but it would be best to have her in a
home with older children.
CARAMEL came to the shelter when her
owner could no longer care for her. She is a
sweet and gentle soul who is looking for a
family to show her the love she deserves. Caramel
is a bit nervous who looks to her human
for guidance. She needs a slow introduction to
dogs and cats, but is good with children. Caramel
would make a wonderful companion.
DARLA is a sweet girl who loves to be with
people and is eager to spend time with her
humans. Her family loved her but could no
longer take care of her. She is great with children
and has a gentle demeanor, but lots of
energy. Darla is brushing up on her manners

lease on life. After four years in a trailer park

tested light positive for FIV. He is fully vetted

will be just fine after some time.
LYNXIE is a 16-year-old girl who has lived in
two different homes and is now at the shelter
awaiting adoption. She doesn’t like being
caged, but her previous owner says she’s very
friendly, loves kids and dogs and enjoys belly
rubs. The owner was devastated to give her up
but has high hopes for this wonderful cat to
find a new loving home.
