Vinexpo Asia 2024:
An opportunity for new connections
Good morning and welcome back!
I hope you all enjoyed the first day of Vinexpo Asia
2024. Yesterday's opening ceremony kicked off the
event with a warm welcome, and it was fantastic to
see so many familiar faces and new connections
being made.
Today we have another exciting day ahead of us.
Buyers are of course an essential part of the event
every year, and each one brings their own unique
perspective based on the market they represent.
On page 9 of the magazine you can read an
exclusive interview with Cherry Dee Leguira from
Vino Enoteca Manila Corp, who has come all the
way from the Philippines. Ms Dee Leguira provides
insights to offer a better understanding of the
growing Philippine wine market.
We also have another full day of conferences,
tastings and masterclasses ahead, and I
recommend starting off with the "Roundtable with
Industry Titans: Insights into the Future of China's
Wine Market" which will give an overview of current
trends and future opportunities in the region. This is
a must-attend session for anyone interested in the
potential of the Chinese market.
Sometimes it's easy to fall into the pattern of
renewing the same connections and relationships
you've built over the years. And of course that is
what Vinexpo Asia is all about: relationships. But
I encourage you to also explore new territory and
move beyond your comfort zone: it's not every day
you have so many wines, spirits and international
contacts under one roof. Try something new!
Here's to a great second day.
Cheers!
ADVERTORIAL
Jean-Claude Mas introduces Vinexpo
Asia to Languedoc whites
Domaines Paul Mas
stands out from
other wine producers
in Languedoc with its
emphasis on white wines.
From the beginning, half of
its wines have been white, at the heart of a region that
traditionally produces reds.
This unique decision was driven
by the domaines' founder, Jean-
Claude Mas, who was immediately
convinced that "contrary to popular
belief, the region has the terroir to
produce excellent whites".
The common denominator for all
of Domaines de Paul Mas' different
Languedoc white wines is that
there's nothing austere about
them: they evoke generosity and
voluptuousness.
In order to prove it his vision for
white wines, Jean-Claude Mas didn't
hesitate to take risks, and one of the
very first cuvées to bear his name
offered a blend of Chardonnay
and Viognier. He transformed what
seemed like an incongruous union,
especially in these latitudes, into an
B+D Grand Tasting,
the perfect prelude to
Vinexpo Asia 2024
B+D, founded by the acclaimed French wine critics Michel
Bettane and Thierry Desseauve, assembled more than 100
of the world's best winemakers for a day of information
and indulgence.
With Vinexpo Asia 2024 set to kick off
Tuesday, visitors to the Hong Kong
Convention & Exhibition Centre were
treated Monday to an early taste of
what’s to come.
Emphasis on the word taste, as more
than 100 top-tier winemakers from
across the globe showcased the fruits
of their labour in a Grand Tasting
event organised by the internationally
acclaimed group of wine experts
Bettane+Desseauve.
The idea behind their Grand Tasting
series, the first of which took place
in France in 2006, is to help guide
consumers towards some of the
world’s best wines and give them a
chance not just to sample, but also
meet the people who make the wines.
One of those is Sebastián Labbe,
Head Winemaker for Casa Real, the
iconic 100% Cabernet Sauvignon
produced by Viña Santa Rita in
Chile’s Maipo Valley and the only
Chilean wine featured in Monday’s
B+D tasting.
“It’s an honour and an opportunity
to be part of a great selection of
wines from around the world, and a
chance to access a specific group of
consumers united for one great day
of tasting”, Labbe told The Daily.
aromatic bomb set to awaken the
taste buds. His audacious choice
paid off—it was an immediate
success, and was emulated not only
in the Languedoc region but also
outside of France. This success story
taught Jean-Claude Mas to follow
his intuition, even when it goes
against popular belief. Domaine de la
Ferrandière particularly overturned a
widespread belief by demonstrating
that fertile soils can produce great
white wines. With a vast diversity
of terroirs and grape varieties at
his disposal, Jean-Claude Mas has
created a range of white wines with
different characters, from wines
offering great value for money to
prestigious vintages. By combining
flavour and freshness, which today's
technology makes it possible to
preserve, all of these wines tell the
story of their place of origin
Hall 1 / Stand G 118
Others present spanned the range
from historic producers such as
Burgundy’s Maison Albert Bichot to
boutique wineries such as Australia’s
Cloudburst, which didn’t release its
first vintage until 2010.
For smaller producers, the B+D Grand
Tasting was of particular importance,
as explained by Todd De Vinchenzi,
President of Global Operations for
Inglenook, in California’s Napa Valley.
“We’re always trying to break in, so
events like this one, with top traders
coming through, some media and
consumer groups with a collector
profile...you always want to pour to
those people,” he said
I TRADE TALK I
Vinexpo Asia "a remarkable opportunity to meet
new wineries from around the world"
Master of Wine Debra Meiburg is the
Founding Director of Meiburg Wine
Media as well as an award-winning
author, journalist, TV personality and
international speaker. She is widely
considered a global authority on the
Asian wine market, and she shared
with The Daily some of her goals and expectations for this
year's show.
What products are you particularly
interested in at Vinexpo Asia 2024?
Vinexpo Asia is always a remarkable
opportunity to see friends and
colleagues and to meet new wineries
from around the world.
I’ll certainly be spending time at
the Napa Valley booth, as I know
some prestigious wineries will be
joining who always have exceptional
wines and offer captivating learning
opportunities.
I am looking forward to seeing the
Australians once again - given their
pause in visits to the region. I always
enjoy spending time with them, and I
am eager to see who is returning to
Asia and explore the intriguing new
wines they will be introducing.
"I expect more ground
activity in our region than
ever before"
Nimmi Malhotra is a leading wine
and drinks writer based in Singapore.
Having lived in Hong Kong and
Singapore, she brings a unique
perspective on key Asian wine
markets. The Daily caught up with
her ahead of her panel discussion on
craft spirits at Vinexpo Asia 2024.
How has the wine industry in Asia
changed in the past few years?
Asia is the future of wine with scores
of emerging markets brimming with
untapped wine drinkers. Countries
like Thailand have lowered barrier
to entry following a massive drop in
taxes; Korea is voraciously consuming
reds and Vietnam is turning to wine
as their social drink of choice. The
producers are increasingly taking
note and I expect more ground
activity in our region than ever before.
What are some of the main trends
for the future in your opinion?
Southeast Asia is diverse, and
every nation is on its own vinous
journey. I can speak to Singapore
where the market is mature and
evolved. Following the rise of wine
and champagne prices, two new
You are giving two masterclasses at
Vinexpo Asia this year. What do you
hope attendees will take away from
these sessions?
I always enjoy presenting Prosecco
DOC. There is so much opportunity
in Asia for these wines, which are
fun, high-quality and suited to
many dining and social occasions.
Sommeliers from restaurants, bars
and hotels would thoroughly benefit
from joining to take a closer look at
the styles on offer and where they fit
within the beverage spectrum of their
businesses.
I am also presenting a “deep dive”
into Ribera del Duero. I am very
excited about this masterclass, as
the region is one of the sixth most
important of Spain yet is underrepresented
in Hong Kong. I have
thoroughly enjoyed returning to the
wines and region in preparation for
the class, and feel it has so much to
offer in terms of quality, story, and
flavour profile. Attendees should walk
trends are emerging. First, grower
champagnes are finally getting the
attention they deserve and then,
Singapore’s “by the glass” list is
expanding.
Unfortunately, rosé is still not a drink
of choice, even though it suits the
weather and cuisine so very well.
Let’s hope this changes in the future.
What can you tell us specifically
about the Asian craft spirits market?
A few years ago, I tasted Hapusa,
an Indian gin with juniper berries
foraged from the foothills of the
Himalaya mountains. I was so
impressed. Since then, I have tasted
a number of spirits crafted with local
botanicals and produce. Asian craft
spirits start-ups follow sustainable
practices and are creating much
needed employment opportunities in
developing economies like Cambodia
and Vietnam. It’s a nascent industry,
but a promising one.
away with an appreciation for these
elements of the region and also see
it as a very attractive way to diversify
their red wine offerings outside of
France and Italy
2,500 trees planted
2,500kg of plastic waste collected I EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW I
International collaboration and education
driving the growing Philippine wine market
The Daily spoke with Cherry Dee Leguira, General Manager of Vino Enoteca Manila Corp,
in an exclusive interview about industry and consumer trends in the Philippines
The wine specialist could't wait to try some of the products
being showcased at Vinexpo Asia this year, especially new
releases, wines from underrated regions, and innovative
tequilas, whiskies and gins.
The wine market in the Philippines
has grown a lot in recent years.
Why do you think that is?
One major driver is the increasing
disposable income and evolving
lifestyle preferences of Filipino
drinkers. The result is a greater
appreciation for premium and
diverse wine selections. The
burgeoning food and beverage
industry, particularly in metropolitan
areas like Manila, has also played a
significant role by integrating wine
into the dining culture and offering
more sophisticated wine menus in
restaurants and bars.
How are changing consumer
preferences influencing the types
of wine that are becoming popular
in the Philippines, and what trends
do you see shaping the market in
the next few years?
Changing consumer preferences
in the Philippines are driving the
popularity of premium and diverse
wines. Key trends shaping the
market include a demand for highquality
wines, adventurous varietal
exploration, an emphasis on food
and wine pairing, an interest in
sustainable and organic wines, and
the growth of experiential events.
Burgundy wines, in particular,
show significant potential as some
distributors in Manila focus more on
this region.
How have collaborations with
top international wine producers
helped elevate the Philippine wine
market, and what benefits have
these partnerships brought to local
consumers and businesses?
Collaborations have transformed the
Philippine wine market, bringing in
high-quality wines from renowned
regions. These partnerships have
not only elevated the reputation of
the wine industry but also provided
consumers with a diverse range
of premium options. Consumers
get access to exceptional wines,
expanding their knowledge and
enjoyment of wine. For businesses,
these collaborations enhance
credibility and competitiveness.
Are there any specific wines
or spirits you are particularly
interested in at Vinexpo Asia this
year?
I have my sights set on several
wines and spirits that I'm thrilled to
explore, especially new releases and
underrated wine regions. I'm also
excited about delving into Port wines,
German Riesling, and Alsace wines.
When it comes to spirits, I'm eager
to try innovative offerings, such
as unique tequilas, whiskies, and
gins. Vinexpo Asia is the ideal
venue to discover the latest trends
and innovations in both wines and
spirits
THE POWER
OF EDUCATION
Filipino consumers are expanding
their horizons when it comes to
wine, and one of the factors driving
the change, according to Cherry
Dee Leguira, are wine education
programmes and events, including
those offered by the Wine & Spirit
Education Trust (WSET).
Such events not only give people
a chance to taste new products,
but also to learn from experienced
sommeliers about the different
regions the wines come from, and
about the passion that goes into
making them. Each wine, after all,
has its own unique story.
Wine education programmes, in
other words, help consumers gain
knowledge and confidence, and in
the case of the Philippines, they
have especially boosted interest in
wines from regions like Bordeaux,
Champagne, Italy, and Napa Valley.
Consumers appreciate Italian
wines for their versatility, and Napa
wines for their bold, fruit-forward
flavours, the General Manager
at Vino Enoteca Manila Corp
explained. Bordeaux, she went on
to say, is valued for its complexity,
and Champagne for its festive
and refreshing qualities. Also, the
tropical climate in the Philippines
complements Champagne's crisp
profile, enhancing its popularity
Viticoltori Ponte:
The fruits of constant evolution
Founded in Ponte di Piave in the Veneto Region in
Italy in 1948, Viticoltori Ponte (ponte1948.it) is a major
player and innovator in the international wine industry
today. It represents 1,000 members and encompasses
3,000 hectares of vines, spanning from the north
of Venice to the foothills of the Province of Treviso,
producing around 20 million bottles every year.
Operating in over 30 countries
around the world and offering
a wide range of wines from
the Prosecco region including
still, sparkling and organic, the
company is presenting its new
successes and winning strategies
at Vinexpo Asia 2024. While 2023
was a critical year not without its
share of challenges, Viticoltori
Ponte achieved its set targets
with a 7% increase in turnover,
reaching 96 million euros. A
strong drive in the domestic
market was accompanied by
steady international development,
affirming its global leadership.
This is the result of a dynamic
and forward-looking vision which
has allowed it to double the
production of sparkling wines
in the last 5 years, i.e. since it
decided to invest significantly in
its own brands.
The company is preparing to open
California’s Rutherford
Wine Company, family
owned and sustainable
Visitors to Vinexpo Asia 2024 can discover the Rutherford
Wine Company. Based in the Napa Valley, but with partner
vineyards throughout the state, the company
is committed to minimising its environmental
impact at every step of the production process.
For the Rutherford
Wine Company, based
in St. Helena, in
California’s Napa
Valley, less is
more — at least
when it comes to
bottles.
The family
owned business
is committed to
100% sustainable
viticulture, and
in that spirit, has
opted to bottle its
wine using lightweight
glass. It’s
not the kind of
thing that’s discernible to the naked
eye, but lighter bottles do make a
difference when it comes to transport
and, ultimately, energy consumption.
“That way you can fit more in a
container. And they’re easier to
handle, because they’re lighter.
So it pulls out a lot of carbon from
the supply chain”, Daniel Assef,
Rutherford’s export sales manager,
told The Daily.
Rutherford, founded in 1978, has been
owned since 2000 by the Zaninovich
family. The company sources fruit from
family-owned vineyards throughout
California, in areas that include Lodi,
Monterrey and the Central Valley,
and its portfolio includes more than a
half-dozen national brands as well as
a number of private labels.
The company’s base of operations
continues to be the Napa Valley,
where all of Rutherford’s vineyards
are certified sustainable, and where
it produces signature wines such
as its Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon,
Reserve Chardonnay, and Sauvignon
Blanc, all of them 100% single variety.
“We made a conscious decision to
be more environmentally friendly
because consumers are gravitating
towards more sustainability,” Assef
explained. “They’re demanding it
because they see the impact of
climate change and climate effects”
