CUTTING EDGE SINCE 1998

CALM AFTER THE STORM
For the last twenty-four months, we have
watched the conflict between ‘‘the haves and
the have-nots,’ those who had purchased a
Life Pass for Ruapehu and those who simply
wanted the mountain open. The world is full
of nice and understanding people, but there
are some unpleasant ones among us, and it
seems most of those who live in an internet
world and voice their unpleasant vitriol on
social media, are often not only angry but
uninformed.
People’s jobs were, and I guess still are,
at risk, businesses hung in the balance
and whole communities were in danger
of evaporating. Instead of a community all
pulling together to keep a national treasure
open for us all, there was this horrendous rift.
Let me be clear: we did not and do not have
an opinion (well, that is not true - we do - but
we kept it to ourselves). But as the snow drift
has started to settle, the snow community
seems to be coming back together and the
shadow of Covid starting to dim. We are now
starting to accept global warming may affect
the snow and tourists are trickling back, all
seems to be well.
Last year it was a “hold your breath and wait
and see”; this year, the Ruapehu battle seems
to be currently resolved as Pure Turoa moves
forward, and Whakapapa independently
stands alone. Life Pass holders know where
they stand; that may not be a place they
would have chosen, but that dye has now
been cast. Tourism numbers are beginning
again to flourish, and the queues outside
Fergs Burger are as unbelievable as ever.
As the snow/ski/snowboard industry is
now seemingly back on track, the only
inconsistency we cannot control is the snow,
but we can control our reaction. Support
your local club fields, buy local products. If
you have been thinking about upgrading your
skis, do it this year. Buy a season pass - do
not think of it as an expense, think of it as an
investment. Have the attitude that this will be
a great season, it might be a hundred days
it might be ten, but make the very most of
them, every moment, every turn, while you
can, because we have seen how at risk they
can become.
Have a great season, enjoy the magazine,
and feel free to send us any images of great
conditions or simply of people having fun.
FINN BILOUS
FOR THE FUN OF IT
People ski because of the love of sport, simply for the fun of it. If you think about it, it
is a strange pastime; you go up the snow-covered mountain and then basically slide
down, over and over; why? Because it is fun.
But when what you do for ‘fun’ becomes your profession, it can get really serious
really quick, and the fun evaporates. The pressure, the high-risk factor, the injuries,
the pressure to perform, the constant travelling, the never-ending winter, the list goes
on and on. It is not a surprise that snow sports athletes get burnt out and jaded. What
was once fun can be a bit of a grind.
Not Finn Bilous: we have been following and recording Finn’s sporting path for a
number of years; Finn is, as he was described recently, ‘Fun incarnate’. He runs, he
surfs, he is one of the best skiers on the planet, and it’s all wrapped up with a smile,
good humour and a real sense of what skiing has always been about - fun!
If you send Finn a note saying well done for an event, there is always a reply of
appreciation; if you ask how the season is going, he always responds positively.
In the serious world of FWT, amongst the absolute best skiers in the world, in any
visual record, the guy smiling is always Finn.
Finn exudes and amplifies what skiing should be about. It seems that no matter how
far up the performance ladder he climbs, he manages to stay grounded in a sport he
loves — because it is fun!
We caught up with him after his appearance at the Freeride World Tour event in
Verbier, where he made history by becoming the first rider to 360 off the notorious
Hollywood Cliff.
J U N E 2 024 // 5

“THE ‘HOLLYWOOD CLIFF’ REALLY
STUCK OUT TO ME AND I KNEW I
WANTED TO TRY AND BECOME THE
FIRST PERSON TO 360 IT.”
That 360 off the Hollywood Cliff in Verbier even made me feel a bit uncomfortable!
Did you plan that, or did it just happen? I am pretty sure I am right saying it’s the
first one ever off the Hollywood cliff.
Haha yeah, that was a gnarly one. I’d actually been thinking about that run for a full year
before having the opportunity to try it. In April 2023, we went to Verbier for the same contest
and inspected the Bec De Rosses face, for a full week. The ‘Hollywood Cliff’ really stuck
out to me and I knew I wanted to try and become the first person to 360 it. Unfortunately,
the weather/conditions didn’t line up in 2023 and the entire face avalanched the morning
we were supposed to run the contest. To go back one year later, have the conditions line
up and get the opportunity for redemption was a long but very satisfying process.
Some of the big mountain runs look like a mixture of out-of-control and amazing
skiing – where does the control stop and the shut your eyes and hope for the best
begin?
No doubt, it’s a fine balance between those two elements and I think it varies between
riders as to which side of the line they sit on. I try to be as calculated as possible about my
runs. It’s undoubtedly dangerous what we’re doing and you’re facing many uncontrollable
elements. This is why the face inspection and use of visualisation is crucial in our decisionmaking
process as to where we’re going to ski in our runs.
The event you are most stoked with in the last 12 months and why?
I was most stoked with the final stop of this year’s Freeride World Tour in Verbier,
Switzerland. The ‘Bec De Rosses’ is by far the most intimidating and consequential face
that we ski on the Freeride World Tour. Having gone to Verbier in 2023 and not been able
to attempt that run only left the idea, quietly percolating away in the back of my mind. When
we arrived this season and I saw the face, the nerves immediately kicked in, knowing
that’s the run that I was most likely going to try and put down. There’s a significant amount
of sharp rocks below the ‘Hollywood Cliff’ making it a feature you really don’t want to crash
on and therefore, the reason why nobody had done a 360 on it yet. That run demanded a
lot from me mentally and is ultimately why it was the most rewarding event of my season.
Not to mention, ending up on the podium for that run is always a nice icing on the cake.
“I’VE ALWAYS TRIED TO STAY TRUE TO
WHERE MY PASSION IS STRONGEST IN
SKIING. RIGHT NOW, THAT LIES WITHIN THE
BACKCOUNTRY, TRYING MY BEST TO ADAPT
FREESTYLE TRICKS TO NATURAL TERRAIN
AND INCORPORATING THEM INTO LINES.”
What now seeing you seem spread over a range of disciplines what is your
favourite – why and where do you see the most grow options?
I’ve always tried to stay true to where my passion is strongest in skiing. Right now, that
lies within the backcountry, trying my best to adapt freestyle tricks to natural terrain and
incorporating them into lines. I’m really enjoying the direction I’m going with my skiing and
the people I’m surrounded by in the process. I just want to continue learning and growing
in all aspects of backcountry riding from avalanche safety to building jumps. The limits
are pretty endless in the backcountry and I’m motivated to bring a new approach to that
aspect of skiing.
Year on year, back-to-back winter – how do you deal with burnout and fatigue or
are you simply having too much fun?
Going back to that last question, I think staying true to where your passion is strongest, is
the best way to sustain longevity without burning out. I love what I do, every day. As I’ve
gotten older, I’ve realised how many people in this world don’t get to do that and therefore,
what a privilege it is. As long as I continue to love it, I think I’ll keep chasing this type of
lifestyle.
I am not gonna say you make it look easy because it never looks easy – but how
much training goes into make those runs successful?
I think it takes a lifetime of training and I’m still just learning. When I was competing more
in Slopestyle and Big Air, the runs that we were doing, were very trained, almost like a
routine in a way. I find the runs I’m doing now in Freeride, force me to rely on all of the skills
that I’ve accumulated during my time on skis. You can’t practice or train the runs in the
same way that you’d do with a slopestyle course which means you have to be adaptable
and be prepared for any type of condition/terrain. That layer of unknown is what makes it
so hard but also so rewarding when everything comes together.
If you are not on the snow are you running, at the gym, trampolining, pogo stick?
When I’m not in the mountains, most of my time is spent at the beach. I love to surf in
between winters and find it a nice contrast to the ski life. When I’m back home in Wanaka,
I also love to trail run, skateboard, and mountain bike.
What is on the card for 2024 – 2025 are we going to see you back in NZ?
I plan to return to NZ in late July for the Southern Hemisphere Winter. I’ve got some
filming to do with my sponsors around home in Wanaka. I’ll then head to the USA to do a
film tour with the Matchstick Productions crew. As for 24/25 season, my plans aren’t set
yet. We’ll see…
EILEEN GU
SPORTSWOMAN, FASHION MODEL AND SCHOLAR
Eileen Gu has been named as the Laureus World Action Sportsperson of the
Year after she came away from the 2022 Winter Olympic Games with two
golds and a silver medal as well as chalking up impressive victories on the FIS
Freestyle World Cup circuit.
The 19-year-old became the first athlete to win three medals in freestyle skiing at
a single Games when she was victorious in both the halfpipe and big air Beijing
events while her FIS World Cup wins included a memorable one for a perfect
record across four rounds of a halfpipe competition.
Gu posted on Instagram: "As the first freeskier to ever win this prestigious
award, I hope to share this moment with all those involved with the sport
and the industry. Knowing that young people have the power and responsibility
to change the world, I want more kids (especially girls & multiracial youth!) to see
representation growing and know there is a place for them here."
After winning a 2018–19 FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup slopestyle event for the
USA, Gu switched nationality to China and broke through further when she won
two golds and one silver medal at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics in Lausanne
across big air, halfpipe and slopestyle respectively.
Two 2019–2020 FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup victories soon followed as she
went on to grab 2021 Winter X Games and 2021 World Championship golds
in halfpipe, superpipe and slopestyle, the latter event even more remarkable
as she competed without poles for the first time in her career to triumph after
fracturing a finger and tearing the UCL in her thumb.
At the time, the then 17-year-old said: "I thought I wasn't going to make it 2 / 2
and then I ended up winning in the finals. It threw me off mentally not having
poles. It’s something that’s taken me a minute to get used to, but now that we’re
past this event, we can safely say I’ve adapted.”
Gu landed the world's first female Double Cork 1440 at the Stubai Prime Park
Sessions in November 2021 and opened the 2021-2022 FIS World Cup with
three December wins in big air and halfpipe, then banked two January 2022
halfpipe wins in Calgary and Mammoth Mountain.
It was her star turn on home snow that truly put her on the global map as she
dealt with the host nation pressure to win two Beijing golds and slopestyle silver
- a feat which saw her win the 2022 Best Breakthrough Athlete and Best Female
Action Sports Athlete ESPY Awards.
After winning two FIS Freestyle World Cup halfpipe events in January 2023, Gu
suffered a bad MCL strain, ACL strain and a bone bruise in training which saw
her withdraw from the Winter X Games.
Fashion model Gu is now studying quantum physics at Stanford University in
the USA as well as undergoing rehabilitation for her injuries so she can compete
when the 2024 season starts this year.
Kiwi, Marke Dickson, at home in the mountains
MARKE DICKSON
A WINTER AT NORTH AMERICA’S EASTERN MOST SKI RESORT
Marke Dickson grew up in that hotbed of
southern skiing, Gore, drawing trail maps of
imaginary ski areas with colour pencils in his
bedroom (even though he had never skied).
His first job in the industry was at Cardrona
in the days before the clock tower. 31 years
later and well past the mid-station of his
chairlift ride, Dickson has visited more than
100 resorts and worked on snow in Australia,
the United States, and in British Columbia at
must-visit mountains like Panorama and Sun
Peaks.
Career highlights include having a beer with
Eddie the Eagle and designing a real resort
trail map with the legendary American artist,
Jim Niehues.
Recently Marke spent a winter at North
America’s eastern most ski resort, White Hills.
Marke tells the story.
When interviewing for a role at White Hills Resort, as far east in Canada as you can
get, I assured the panel that New Zealanders know plenty about running a ski area in
challenging weather conditions. Wind. Ice. Rain after one metre of fresh. No sweat.
Months later and two days before the lifts were scheduled to spin for the season,
meteorologists warned of freezing drizzle and significant ice accretion. Accretion,
there’s a word I hadn’t heard in a weather forecast before, but I figured that it would
be nothing compared to what they get on Ruapehu. No sweat.
“Yeti stick. B’y, what’s a yeti stick?” Both Newfoundlanders and Kiwis are known for
their colourful additions to the English language, and once again the resort crew
found itself in the middle of a communication breakdown. I pulled up a video from
Tūroa. “See, they give the chairs a couple of whacks with a pick handle and the ice
just peels off. We can’t wait for a thaw, so let’s try it.”
I quickly learned that freezing drizzle is a formidable foe, slowly but steadily locking
down roads, towns, and anything else that moves in Atlantic Canada. This wasn’t
brittle rime from the Tasman. This was the kind of see-through ice that you chip off a
block, with considerable effort, and drop in a margarita.
After 14 hours, several broken yeti sticks, and exhausted arms and hands, the
resort’s one chairlift was clear and ready for operation.
Skiing and riding is not something people in this part of the world take for granted. The
Rock, as the island of Newfoundland and Labrador is known, is not much smaller
than the South Island and at a similar latitude, yet there are only two lift-serviced
resorts. Marble Mountain arguably offers the best terrain and snow on the east coast.
White Hills Resort is more than 500km from Marble, closer to the United Kingdom
than British Columbia, and it’s where I found myself this opening day.
Think of White Hills as a rock on the Rock, and a burly one at that. The base sits at
200 metres above sea level, a mere nine-minute drive from the beach in Clarenville.
From the 356-metre summit there’s a choice of 29 trails. The black diamonds are
rough and tough; blues and greens are groomed like the best you’ll see. No matter
which line you take it’s always a quick run down but for some reason the novelty never
wears off. Perhaps that’s because it feels like a treat, something you do against the
odds. I suspect the same is true at places like Cape Smokey in Nova Scotia, Crabbe
Mountain in New Brunswick, or Tukino and Awakino in Aotearoa. Collecting a ticket
from any of these hills is an achievement.
Outports like Salvage dot the coast and
are easy to visit in winter
CONDITIONS.
Yeti sticks aren’t much of a match for the ice in
these parts
A classic Atlantic Nor’easter dumped 56cm in less
than a day
Digging out after another Nor’easter
From first chair to the last, always happy to be out
18// S K I A N DSNOW.CO.NZ
Jason lined up for the first chair of 2024
with a couple of hundred others. Opening
was late, one and a half hours late due to
continuing ice build-up, stuck sheaves,
safety circuit faults; all the things that lift
mechanics hate. None of this worried the
crowd though. “It’s Newfoundland, it is
what it is,” was their usual response to the
precipitation of the day.
Like New Zealand’s club fields, a small army
of volunteers prepares the resort for winter
in return for a season pass. Jason and his
b’ys spent their autumn weekends clearing
brush and vegetation from trails, to improve
the chances of actually skiing them. These
days the snow just doesn’t fall like it used to.
Television, radio, and print journalists, are
on the case. Unusual weather and stories
of climate-related struggle make great news
but none of the headlines hold the local
ski community back. No matter what the
weather, no matter the snow conditions,
they turn up each day in their hundreds,
some protected from the elements by highvisibility
outerwear meant for work on oil rigs
and fishing boats. “Just happy to be out,”
was always the mantra.
I heard “happy to help” just as often. Early
one night, the snow grooming fleet of
two well-travelled machines broke down,
almost at the same moment. The prospect
of another closed day resulted in a call to
the local Nordic club, who maintain an
outstanding trail network on the edge of
town. Within minutes downhill slopes were
being tilled by a small cat designed to set
classic cross-country tracks deep in the
forest. There’s a bit of the Number 8 wire
mentality in Newfoundlanders too.
The beating heart of most community ski
areas can be found in the bar, and at White
Hills it’s called Tips Up. Photo albums in
a bookcase tell the tale of 34-years of
endeavour and Carm has been there for
every one of them. Locals know that tables
nearby are reserved for former owners
and managers, but with a glass of rum or
an East Coast IPA in hand, I was always
offered a seat and told the stories behind
the pictures.
Like when a guest from St. John’s returned
their snowboard gear to rentals at the end
of the day. “How was it,” the shop manager
enthusiastically asked. “Best day ever,” the
rider responded, “but one of my feet hurts
bad, really bad.” Then, they handed back…
two, left, boots.
That sums up the winter of 2024 in
Newfoundland and Labrador perfectly. At
the end of the season, when unbuckling
for the last time, any discomfort quickly
subsided and memories jumped to blue sky,
the glistening inlets of the Atlantic Ocean,
and chairlift rides with some of the most
welcoming people in the world of snow.
No matter what the weather, persistence
and optimism comes easy when your
community of skiers and riders is just happy
to be out.

SKIING & BOARDING ACROSS CANADA
Words by Phil Clark - Mad About Travel!
How to decide which resort to ski in Canada?
The age old question! There are soooo many resorts in
Canada to choose from! When you look at their websites,
they all have awesome snow, ski in ski out accommodation,
great for families, couples etc etc. But do they?
After spending the last 10 years helping my clients pick
the best ski resort for them I can categorically say that all
the resorts in Canada are quite different and suit different
people!
Best for Beginner/Intermediate skiers and families:
All resorts have beginner terrain. But some are better
than others and have extensive wide open blue cruisers
which are perfect for building confidence and perfecting
technique. They also have lifts which promote natural
progression to harder terrain, yet have easy runs off them.
SUN PEAKS The famous 5 mile green run from the top of
the mountain gives you 5 miles of wide groomed goodness
with options of harder runs of every length running next to it.
The village is large enough to give a variety of dining and
entertainment options, yet small enough to feel like a
mountain village. With a new lift accessing some seriously
advanced powder tree skiing, Sun Peaks has terrain to
keep powder hounds happy too. It is a resort for everyone!
Mad Tip – Don’t miss the morning tea cinnamon buns at
the Sun Burst cafe
BIG WHITE Has a green run off the top of every chairlift as
well as acres and acres of blue terrain. It even has a 7.2 km
long “Kalina’s rainbow” blue run down to Gem lake.
Known for its cruise the blues program (where kids can get
a badge for every blue run skied) and its amazing apres ski
program for families. Big White has some really, really nice
accommodation options as well as some really affordable
options.
Mad Tip – Check out the retro ski art on some of the local
cabins at Big White.
Best for intermediate/advanced skiers and families (as
well as beginners)
These resorts have lots of great intermediate terrain and
have some seriously spicy runs to keep the die hard
steep skier entertained. They also have really good family
facilities, great apres ski and fantastic accommodation.
SILVERSTAR Nestled in the trees above the Okanagan
valley, this ski in, ski out resort has a huge front face of
glades and blue groomers, plus a seriously legit back bowl
area of double black diamond terrain and steep bump runs.
The village is quaint and old school, with a fantastic range
of accommodation. There is one pub and a few restaurants
and the locals are incredibly friendly.
Mad Tip - Make sure you head to Bugaboos Bakery for an
awesome breakfast and the best coffee on the mountain.
PANORAMA Located right in the middle of “The valley
of 1000 Peaks”, you can’t beat the scenery or the rocky
mountain snow. Panorama has a cat or hike accessed back
bowl as well as an extensive front face of blue groomers.
One of the best “bang for buck” ski resorts in Canada if
you book early, with large discounts on accommodation
and lift passes. Panorama is also a true family resort with
great accommodation, a nice pub, apres ski activities and
hot pools!
Mad Tip – If there’s no snow “Go Heli-skiing” with RK heli
skiing operating straight out of the resort.
20// S K I A N DSNOW.CO.NZ

Panorama Mountain Resort - Image by Matt Tuffs

RED MOUNTAIN Right in between the Okanagan
Valley and the Selkirk mountains, Red is a huge resort
which feels like a club mountain. Locally owned and
operated you will get to know the coffee guy by name
by the end of your week here. The mountain has some
seriously steep offpiste terrain as well as some fantastic
runs which you can just continually lap.
Big Red Cats operate straight out of the resort, about
half the price of heli-skiing, this is an awesome option if
you want a powder fix.
Mad Tip – Check out Rossland in the evening for some
quirky bars and restaurants.
WHISTLER BLACKCOMB The legendary Whistler is
a great place to ski with older kids. It has a huge range
of terrain including the awesome Blackcomb glacier
and incredible lift access meaning you can get from
Creekside to the Glacier in just four lifts.
One of the best things about Whistler is the activities
and nightlife in the village. Ziplining, spa treatments,
heli skiing, shopping trips to Vancouver, beautiful hotels,
Whistler has it all.
Mad Tip – if you want a quieter ski in, ski out experience
at Whistler, stay in Creekside.
Best for powder hounds / groups of friends
FERNIE Propped in the rockies on the edge of the great
prairie plain in Canada Fernie gets some incredible
snow. With 6 bowls of incredible terrain Fernie has
everything from epic steeps to smooth cruisers. The ski
in, ski out village at the resort is compact and has just
enough pubs and restaurants to keep you entertained,
but the real life happens 15 minutes down the road in
the eclectic town of Fernie.
Mad tip – Head to Kimberley ski resort for a day trip.
Just 40 minutes away and on the same lift pass, its
worth a look!
REVELSTOKE Steep and Deep describes Revelstoke
perfectly. A steep long fast front face with some amazing
gladed offpiste tree skiing, this is a serious skiers
mountain! The lifts are so fast you barely get time for a
rest between laps. Once you’ve had your powder day
join Selkirk Tangiers heliski for a day of Big Mountain
skiing using a Bell 212 “Huey” as a ski lift.
Accommodation is in a beautiful hotel at the base of the
mountain and the historic town of Revelstoke is just 10
minutes way.
Mad Tip – Revelstoke combines really well with
Silverstar, Red Mountain or Whitewater if you want to
do a road trip.
Whitewater Ski Resort
WHITEWATER Hidden in the depths of the Columbia river valley
lies the town of Nelson. Just up the road in a small valley (which
seems to attract more than its fair share of powder) is Whitewater
ski resort. Consisting of a day lodge and three elderly fixed grip
chairlifts which access some of the best offpiste powder skiing
in Canada.
Mad Tip – White water is an awesome resort to hit on a powder
day from Red, make sure you get there early!
KICKING HORSE Situated in between the Selkirk mountains
and the Canadian Rockies Kicking Horse has a long gondola
and two short chairs. You can do long laps or short laps of steep
deep powder bowls. You go there to ski! On mountain are three
lodges, a pub and a restaurant. There isn’t much to distract you
from the awesome skiing!
There is a heli / cat ski operator just up the road if the resort isn’t
giving you enough freshies.
Mad Tip – head up to Eagles Rest restaurant for lunch at over
2500m elevation. If you stay the night you get the services of a
butler
BANFF Old school village, mad hotels, and three amazing
resorts to hit on one ski pass sums up Banff. Some of the best
spring skiing I have had has been at Norquay, Sunshine and
Lake Louise. Right in the centre of the Canadian Rockies and
Banff National park, the wild life is intense. You will see wolves on
the valley lakes, caribou, deer, squirrels and all kinds of critters
right through the town of Banff and on the way to the ski resorts.
A real town, Banff has fantastic shopping, restaurants and the
skiing is awesome!
Mad Tip – For the best experience stay in the Hogwarts style
castle Fairmont Banff Springs, or the French style Fairmont
Chateau Lake Louise, or both!
You may have noticed that as we’ve gone through the list of ski
resorts, the further east we go the harder the resorts become.
This relates directly to the mountains! On the coast near Vancouver
the coastal mountains including Whistler are jagged and high,
then become more rolling through the Monashee’s/Okanagan
valley (Sun Peaks, Silverstar, Big White), as we approach the
Selkirks they become higher and steeper again(Red mountain,
Revelstoke). Once past the Selkirks we hit the Columbia River
Valley (valley of 1000 Peaks) (Kicking Horse, Panorama). Finally
we hit the Canadian Rockies proper (Fernie, Banff) after this the
great Canadian Prairie takes us to flat lands for about 1000km.
Once you have the lie of the land choosing a resort is much
easier, but you simply can’t beat the unbiased advice of someone
who has skied them all! Someone has to do it!
SUN PEAKS, BC
The main access to Sun Peaks is via the airport at
Kamloops but we were roadtripping from Kelowna and
were now free to drive ourselves east towards Calgary
and anywhere else we chose in between. There are
copious ski fields to choose from along the snowcovered
road, and Sun Peaks was one to remember!
Sun Peaks is the second largest ski area behind
Whistler, with a sprawling 4,270 skiable acres (that is
1728 hectares). With nine major hotels and over twenty
restaurants, it still manages to retain a feeling of a quaint
mountain village. Sun Peaks has a real family-friendly
intimate feel about it.
We had spent two weeks in Sun Peaks just before the
world was shut down from the global pandemic and we
experienced two weeks of excellent skiing and loads of
sunshine.
The resort is made up of three mountain peaks.
Sundance offers more mellow-groomed runs for
beginners and intermediate skiers whereas Todd
Mountain has more advanced terrain with open bowls,
gladed runs and long groomers. Mt Morrisey faces
north (the cold side in the northern hemisphere) so this
offers great skiing during spring as the snow holds well
during the warmer months.
What is memorable about Sun Peaks is the longgroomed
runs and the fact that no matter where you
are on the mountain, there was always a green, blue or
black line down. There is a green run called “5 mile” (5
miles) that is so perfectly groomed you could ski it with
your eyes closed. As wide as the length of a football
field, it seems to go on forever. Sun Peaks caters for
everyone, from advanced to beginners and the way
the mountain has been laid out with consideration for
all levels of ability, those with differing capability can ski
together all day.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM SUN PEAKS
• Sun Peaks fondue night, is something not to be
missed. Once (or sometimes twice) per week you
can take the Sunburst Chair to the Sunburst Bar
and eatery. Dressed in your ski gear you enjoy
a delicous fondue experience, before you get to
ski or snowboard down, in the dark. The freshly
groomed 5 Mile run is the way down, with the help
of a head torch and a guide. Or simply turn off the
head torch and let the moonlight guide you down.
• This seems odd, and I am not a foody, but once
you have tasted the cinnamon buns at Sunburst
Bar and eatery, you will be spoilt. They are ready
each morning and you can tell when by the length
of the queue. They are truly to die for. Whether it’s
the quality of the baking or simply the location, they
are truly unique.
BIG WHITE, BC
As a seasoned journalist and the familiar face
of 9News Sydney’s weather forecasts, Amber
Sherlock has carved tracks through many of
the world’s premier ski resorts. Despite her
extensive experience, the allure of Big White Ski
Resort in British Columbia, a favourite among
her fellow Australians, remained a captivating
mystery. This year, driven by curiosity, Amber
and her family embarked on a snowy adventure
to uncover the charm of Big White—and they
were not disappointed!
Everything for the family
• As well as being regulars on the NSW ski
fields, we have also skied at other resorts in
Canada, the US and Japan. I was curious
as to why so many Australians have a love
affair with Big White, and after ten days, it’s
safe to say I worked it out!
• The first thing that struck me was the
relative ease to get there. After a flight
from Sydney to Vancouver, it was a short
domestic flight to Kelowna before a Big
White Shuttle greeted us.
• First impressions
• When we woke up and looked out the
window the next morning, we were
awestruck. The town centre was literally
a snowball throw away and we could
see visitors make their way to their
morning coffee and ski lesson from our
accommodation. This was ski-in, ski-out in
the true sense of the word.
No line-ups
• The first morning, we made our way
to the hire centre and were greeted by
knowledgeable staff who fitted us out
with impressively high-quality equipment.
It’s also worth noting we didn’t even have
to queue – this became a theme of the
holiday! We skied on to nearly every lift
without having to queue. Despite being
Australian school holidays, we rarely had
to queue to get on a chairlift, and restaurant
bookings were easy.
• The mountain is very user-friendly in that
all the runs lead back to the village. When
you are skiing with kids, it is very reassuring
that they are unlikely to get lost.
Legendary Champagne Powder
• We managed to time our arrival with a
snowstorm, and it continued to snow
nearly every day. Honestly, I skied some of
the best powder I’ve ever seen.
BY THE NUMBERS
750
Annually, over 7.5 meters of dry, fluffy snow,
affectionately known as “Okanagan Champagne
climate produces this light, powdery snow,
creating the iconic snow-covered trees or “snow
Lessons and beyond skiing
• While both my kids are proficient skiers, they
had a couple of days of lessons to brush up
on their skills. The lesson size was very small;
both children only had three other people, which
allowed them to get the most out of the time.
• But we didn’t just ski. We also took the
opportunity to check out the tubing park, which
the kids loved. We also tried ice hockey – which
is much harder than it looks! Big White has its
own ice rink; you can rent skates and a hockey
stick to give it a go.
Final thoughts
• Would I go back? Most definitely. It was an
easy-to-navigate resort for a family, with
great snow, reasonable prices, and plenty of
accommodation to choose from. It has a smaller
resort vibe with friendly staff, a beautiful village,
a great ski school, and epic snow.
CLUB MED SAHORO
JAPAN
Less than two hours from New Chitose Airport, Club Med
Sahoro is situated in southern Central Hokkaido, 167
km east of Sapporo and 130 km from the airport. The
resort offers a stark contrast to the bustling city life of
Tokyo, providing a tranquil and welcoming atmosphere.
Located partway up the mountain, Club Med Sahoro is a
ski-in, ski-out resort with access to lifts via beginner trails
winding through picturesque woods.
Upon arrival, guests are greeted by the resort team,
known as Gentil Organisateurs (G.O.s), whose role is
to ensure guests are entertained with various programs
and activities. Our G.O. was a fellow New Zealander from
Nelson, excited to meet someone from her home country,
as Kiwis are not a common presence at the resort. The
welcoming and all-inclusive nature of Club Med was
a pleasant surprise, showing that this mentality often
means Kiwis miss out on the unique experience Club
Med offers.
After an orientation, we enjoyed
complimentary drinks at the bar, an
introduction to the "Club Med" lifestyle.
The following morning, we eagerly
explored the slopes, starting with the
Sahoro Express lift, which operates only
on weekends. Despite less-than-ideal
snow conditions, we found pockets of
powder and challenging terrain.
One of the highlights of Club Med skiing
is the convenience of skiing back to
the resort for lunch, storing your boots
in a locker, and enjoying a meal before
returning to the slopes. The resort's
efficient system includes a wristband
providing access to rooms and ski
lockers, simplifying the skiing experience.
Club Med offers an all-inclusive package
that covers accommodation, lift passes,
ski hire, meals, beverages, and lessons.
It also includes children's programs and
childcare, allowing parents to enjoy their
time on the slopes. We met several
families who found the all-inclusive nature
of Club Med a game-changer, as their
children were well-cared for and happy.
Sahoro Ski Resort features 610 meters
of vertical drop (420-1,030m) and 21
marked runs, all below the treeline. The
lift system includes a gondola, three highspeed
quads, and five other lifts. The
resort caters to various skill levels with
trails for beginners, intermediates, and
advanced skiers. Off-piste skiing is also
available, with Club Med offering tree
skiing lessons.
While Japan is renowned for its dry
powder, we experienced warm weather
during our visit, resulting in less-thanideal
snow conditions but plenty of
sunshine. Despite this, we made the
most of the available terrain and enjoyed
guided lessons, enhancing our skiing
skills significantly.
The resort's instructors, like our
knowledgeable Scottish instructor
Craig, were exceptional and provided
invaluable lessons. Instructors and G.O.s
also participate in evening entertainment,
creating a vibrant and interactive
environment for guests.
Club Med Sahoro is a self-contained
resort with no nearby village, restaurants,
or shops, although a taxi ride to Shintoku
is an option. The all-inclusive nature of the
resort ensures a hassle-free experience,
with every aspect of the holiday
meticulously planned and executed.
Overall, Club Med Sahoro excels in
providing a family-friendly, interactive,
and engaging skiing experience. The
resort fosters a sense of community,
encouraging guests to socialize and
form lasting friendships. Embracing the
Club Med experience enhanced our trip,
proving that the people you meet often
define the quality of your travels.

HELISKIING
ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW
A comprehensive guide on what to look for in a top-quality heli-ski company, designed to
empower you to make informed decisions and embark on the ski trip of a lifetime.
Imagine soaring over untouched mountaintops, heart pounding with adrenaline, as you
prepare to carve your track on pristine, untouched slopes: this is heli-skiing, an unmatchable
experience sought after by snow adventurers around the globe. The thrill is high, but with so
many heli-ski companies vying for your attention, how do you determine which one offers the
top-quality service you deserve? There's no need to be overwhelmed. We've created this
comprehensive guide to help you navigate your way to the ultimate heli-skiing experience.
Selecting an ideal heli-ski company is undoubtedly an essential part of planning your adventure.
In this guide, we will explore key indicators of a top-quality heli-ski company, including safety
protocols, reputation and experience, commitment to environmental responsibility, diversity of
available terrains, customization of experiences, and transparent pricing and policies.

Above: Turkey Heliski, Turkey
Right: Skeena Heliskiing, BC, Canada
1. Prioritizing safety above everything else.
When seeking out a top-class heli-ski company, safety should be
your main priority. Opt for a firm that showcases an unblemished
safety record, maintains helicopters, and employs guides certified
by recognized organizations such as the International Federation of
Mountain Guides Associations (IFMGA); These certifications signify
that guides have undergone rigorous training and evaluation to
ensure their competence in leading heli-ski adventures. Exceptional
heli-ski providers place safety at the top of their list, complying
with industry-standard protocols and investing significantly in
continuous staff training. Remember, your adventure will only be
truly memorable if it is safe!
2. The importance of reputation and experience.
When considering a potential heli-ski company, its reputation is
often an indicator of a longstanding commitment to customer
satisfaction. Look for heli-ski operators with a documented history
of delivering remarkable experiences. Essential tools, such as
customer reviews, testimonials, and peer recommendations, are
more than just feedback but real-life narratives of experiences that
can help assess a company's credibility. Beyond these insights, a
heli-ski operator's longevity in the industry can also speak volumes.
Companies with years or even decades in the business generally
have a deep understanding of the terrain, weather patterns, and
safety precautions. Opting for a heli-ski company with a shining
reputation and rich experience not only guarantees an unforgettable
adventure but also provides you with the confidence that you're in
knowledgeable and capable hands.
3. Choosing an Environmentally Responsible Operator.
In our role as caretakers of the environment, it's vital to choose
heli-ski companies that prioritize environmental sustainability.
Look for companies that make concerted efforts to minimize
their environmental impact through eco-friendly practices, and
show support to local conservation initiatives. An environmentally
responsible heli-ski trip will allow you to indulge in the thrill of the
experience guilt-free, knowing your adventure has not detrimentally
impacted the natural landscapes you've come to appreciate.
4. Finding diversity in terrain and tailored experiences.
Heli-skiers come with varied preferences and skill levels, hence
the need for a company that provides a wide range of terrain and
custom-tailored experiences. Whether your adventure craving leans
more towards steep chutes, open bowls, or pristine glades, ensure
you choose a company that can cater to your specific interests and
abilities. A company that tailors its services can offer all skiers their
ideal heli-ski adventure, whatever their level of expertise or unique
desires.
5. Transparency in pricing and policies.
Heli-skiing can be an expensive adventure and understanding a
company’s pricing and relevant policies is essential to avoid any
unpleasant surprises. Choose a company that's upfront about
what its packages entail, any hidden or additional fees, and its
cancellation or refund policies. With transparent pricing and policies,
you can confidently reserve your heli-ski adventure, knowing what
to expect and how to manage any potential unforeseen challenges.
MACKENZIE COUNTRY
Nestled in the heart of the South
Island, the Mackenzie region
boasts some of the country's most
spectacular alpine landscapes,
making it a haven for ski enthusiasts
of all levels and one of New Zealand’s
best kept winter secrets.
The region has enjoyed some of the
country’s best powder conditions
over recent years and is home to
three family-owned ski fields, one
club field and an incredible array of
off-piste experiences. Located on
the main highway in the middle of
Christchurch and Queenstown, the
region is a relaxing alternative to
its busy neighbouring regions. And
whilst they can’t offer you a nightclub,
there are one billion stars on show
in the globally renowned dark sky
reserve.
The region consists of Fairlie, Lake
Tekapo, Aoraki/Mount Cook and
Twizel townships all within close
proximity to each other. All towns are
a short driving distance from at least
two of the skifields and if you stay
central, you have the choice of all.
There’s plenty of off-mountain
activities from hot pools to ice skating
to snow tube park, plus walking and
cycle trails galore. The region is
famous for its large array of stargazing
and astronomy experiences, and
winter is the best time for viewing
with clear, long night skies and the
galactic core right above.
A visit to the Mackenzie must include
at least a day trip to Aoraki/Mount
Cook National Park to see New
Zealand’s highest peak and largest
glacier – the impressive Tasman
Glacier. In winter you can even
ski the glacier with one of several
operators – the 8-10km run makes it
New Zealand’s longest.
Whether you're cruising down a
groomed trail or touring to a remote
backcountry bowl, you'll be treated to
breathtaking vistas at every turn.
once again be delivering a sensational programme in 2024!
The 2024 Winter Games NZ will kick off with the much anticipated The North Face
Frontier 2* and 4* Freeride World Qualifier events at New Zealand’s home of freeride, The
Remarkables.
The action will then head across the Wakatipu Basin to Coronet Peak, where the high
octane FIS Australia New Zealand Cup Giant Slalom and Slalom races will take place with
international and kiwi athletes battling it out for the coveted Yellow Bib.
To round out the 2024 programme, the world’s best freeski and snowboard slopestyle
and halfpipe athletes will descend on Cardrona Alpine Resort for the Freeski Halfpipe
and Snowboard Slopestyle World Cup events. These world class World Cup events will
mark the beginning of the qualification journey to the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter
Games.
Winter Games NZ will also host the Snowboard Halfpipe and Freeski Slopestyle Australia
New Zealand Cup events to compliment the World Cup programme, with valuable FIS
points up for grabs.
As we get set to charge towards the 2024
Winter Games NZ, let’s recap the 2023 Winter
Games NZ, where we delivered our most
extensive programme ever to snow sports
fans in New Zealand and all over the globe!
The 2023 edition of Winter Games NZ
consisted of 15 world class events, held over
17 days across four incredible venues. Over
450 athletes from 38 nations descended on
Cardrona Alpine Resort, Coronet Peak and
The Remarkables to compete for Junior World
Championship titles, Alpine World Cup yellow
bibs, Freeride World Qualifier points and the
Obsidian Edgar Challenge Trophy.
It was an epic two and a half weeks of action at
the biggest snow sports event in the Southern
Hemisphere, read about all the action below!
The FIS ANC Alpine Ski Racing programme
kicked off the action and was held at New
Zealand's home of alpine ski racing, Coronet
Peak. The programme opened with two Giant
Slalom races held on the formidable Hurdle
and with World Cup athletes competing
against up-and-coming kiwi skiers, it was quite
the show.
The first women’s Giant Slalom podium was
particularly impressive as it was swept by three
Beijing 2022 Winter Olympians, including
local legend Alice Robinson in second place.
American’s A J Hurt and Nina O’Brien rounded
out the podium in first and third respectively.
Next on the alpine programme was the FIS
ANC Slalom races, the first of which was held
on the ProAM slope, starting on the M1 and
crossing under the Coronet Express chairlift.
This marked the first time in almost two
decades that a race of this level had been held
on ProAm.
The second slalom race was held on Race
Arena, offering the athletes a new world class
slope for the second race. After four days of
thrilling action at Coronet Peak, Winter Games
NZ made the move to Cardrona Alpine Resort
for the freeski and snowboard action.
The FIS Park & Pipe Junior World
Championships presented by La Roche
Posay and Cardrona were held on Cardrona’s
world class slopestyle and big air venues.
The slopestyle and big air Junior World
Championship titles were hotly contested, with
strong international fields showing up to fight
for the titles.
Slopestyle was first on the schedule, with
fantastic finals day weather allowing the
athletes to show the world what they were
capable of. With two podiums for local Kiwi
athletes, it was an exciting day for the home
crowd watching on.
Alice Robinson_FIS ANC Giant Slalom_credit
Winter Games NZ_Sean Beale 16-yearold
Wānaka snowboarder Lucia Georgalli
became the first New Zealander to ever win
a snowboard Junior World Championship title,
claiming the gold in the women’s snowboard
slopestyle. On the freeski side we saw Muriel
Mohr of Germany take the win, with Kiwi
Mischa Thomas finishing in third at the first
FIS event of her young career.
The big air competition was held in near perfect
conditions, with clear skies and barely a breath
of wind on the 65-foot jump. The level of riding
was impressive, with huge tricks being thrown
down by both the men and the women.
Flora Tabanelli of Italy and Leo Lendroe of
Norway both claimed their second podiums of
the event, both taking home gold in the freeski
big air. In the snowboard big air Japanese
powerhouse Taiga Hasegawa took the win,
with homegrown rider Rocco Jamieson
claiming the biggest podium result of his
career with a second place finish.
The next stop for Winter Games NZ was
New Zealand’s home of Freeride, The
Remarkables, for the The North Face Frontier
2* and 4* events.
The North Face Frontier 2* was up first, with
the event boasting its biggest start list we have
ever seen, with an incredible number of up-and-coming
Kiwi athletes dropping into the Shadow Basin venue.
With The North Face Frontier 4* event also receiving an
unprecedented number of kiwi and international entries,
the decision was made to expand the start list to include
an additional 10 athletes. The star-studded field put on a
fantastic show as they skied, rode, dropped and flipped
their way down the Alta Chutes.
In the ski women’s category kiwi riders Jessie Violet and
Jess Hotter battled it out to go one, two on the podium, both
throwing impressive backflips on their final hit, delighting
the enthusiastic crowd who surrounded the finish line.
To round out the 2023 Winter Games NZ, the team shifted
gears and we headed into the final event, our inaugural
International Obsidian Challenge!
In 2020 and 2022 we held iterations of this homegrown
creativity driven, athlete focussed event, but 2023 marked
the first time we hosted international athletes alongside the
full Obsidian format.
We saw four incredibly talented teams from all four corners
of the globe battle it out over three epic challenges - Big Air,
Park Challenge and Backcountry Freestyle. Teams were
awarded points throughout the event, using strategy and
teamwork in what is usually an individual sport, with the
overall lowest scoring team crowned the winners.
The Big Air Challenge was the first of the three challenges
to go down. Held on Cardrona Alpine Resort’s world class
70-foot big air jump the athletes put down quite a show.
Two days later the teams lined up again, this time at the top
of an expertly crafted custom rail garden courtesy of the
Cardrona Parks Crew. The Park Challenge rewarded both
technical and creative riding, both of which were provided
in spades by the talented athletes.
The pièce de resistance was saved for last - the
Backcountry Freestyle Challenge. The one-of-a-kind
event was held high in the Minaret Range on the ET face,
accessed by helicopter with the help of Southern Lakes
Heli Ski.
For many of our Obsidian athletes this was their first time
in a helicopter and the anticipation and excitement was
tangible. Perfect weather, good snow conditions and
rolling, playful terrain allowed the athletes to bring their ‘A’
Game as they shredded the back country, getting creative,
building features, and showcasing their exceptional talents.
After three days of epic Challenges, Team Europe was
crowned victorious and took home the coveted Obsidian
Edgar Challenge Trophy.
The 2023 Winter Games NZ was a fantastic event, and
it was a pleasure to host each and every athlete at the
biggest snow sports event in the Southern Hemisphere.
We can’t wait to see our Winter Games NZ athletes back
in 2024 and look forward to welcoming new faces to Winter
Games NZ!

THE PLACES WE CALL HOME:
SKIING & SPLITBOARDING NEW ZEALAND’S
REMOTE GLACIERS WITH ASPIRING GUIDES
Words by: Will Rountree - Aspiring Guides IFMGA Guide
Te Waipounamu, The South Island of Aotearoa is
a truly majestic place. The diversity of landscapes
in such a “small” island is unique on a global scale.
Two tectonic plates crash together and force the
mountains up into the path of the Roaring Forties.
A flow of weather systems tracking West to East
that deposit metres of snow every year onto the
Southern Alps. The glaciers that form as a result
are some of the most beautiful in the world and
have shaped this place that we call home over
thousands of years.
Around Aoraki Mt Cook lies a myriad of stunning
glaciers with multiple alpine huts perched on rocky
outcrops. During winter and spring, the crevasses
fill up with snow and the conditions become ripe for
glacier ski and splitboard touring.
Moving through this terrain on skis is efficient,
fun and a fantastic way to travel. From navigating
through icefalls on the Haupapa Tasman glacier,
skiing powder down the Murchison Headwall or
gliding into the sunset while looking down at the
sea on the West Coast. Days out on the glacier are
simply special.
70// S K I A N DSNOW.CO.NZ

J U N E 2 024 // 71

However, they are not without their challenges. It is a step up
from ski touring out the back of Mt Hutt or Treble Cone with
the remoteness and added hazards that come with being in
the high alpine. Crevasses and cliffs need to be avoided, and
the avalanche conditions need to be monitored constantly.
Most importantly we want to find the best snow!
The mountains are a dynamic environment and the snow
changes on a daily basis. It takes a wealth of experience
to know what aspect (direction a slope faces) and what
elevation to head to find quality turns. The weather is the
master of all in these landscapes and it plays a huge role in
the trips. Being able to shelter in an alpine hut during severe
weather is not only safe but an experience unto itself!
This can all be a little overwhelming at first but makes the end
goal even more worth it! A guide will allow you to take this
in your stride and have you sliding around in the best snow
and moving through the terrain while minimising exposure
to risks.
At Aspiring Guides, we recognise and embrace the fact that
every individual and group is unique. We can and will tailor
any trip to the needs of the crew. First time on a glacier and
wanting to take it easy, no worries. Want us to just keep you
safe or do you want to learn the skills and nuances of existing
in the mountains? It’s all possible.
SNOW SPORTS NZ
It’s been another epic Northern Hemisphere season for
kiwi snow sports athletes competing on the World Cup
circuit, Freeride World Tour, and at the Youth Olympic
Winter Games, Park and Pipe Junior World Champs and
Aspen X Games. From career first podiums to comeback
successes, the kiwi crew once again lit up the world stage,
read more below!
Alpine Ski Racing
season, claiming five FIS Giant Slalom World Cup podiums
throughout the season. She kicked off her season with a
She carried her momentum through into January, where
she secured two more World Cup podiums, a second
NEW ZEALAND
TŪROA SKI AREA, MT RUAPEHU
Wild, unique, fun. The perfect place to start an
adventure, Tūroa is a ski field like no other, with
unique volcanic terrain, wide open trails and
hundreds of drops and chutes to please the
most ardent thrill seeker. New managers, Pure
Tūroa, have been renovating and upgrading
the ski-resort for the 2024/25 season.
Tūroa Ski Field sits on the south western slopes
of Mt Ruapehu, the largest active volcano in
New Zealand. With over 500 hectares of skiable
terrain, Tūroa boasts the longest vertical drop in
New Zealand at 722m, making it a haven for
thrill-seekers and seasoned riders alike. From
gentle beginner slopes to more challenging
black diamond runs, Tūroa caters to skiers and
snowboarders of all abilities, ensuring there's
something for everyone to enjoy. Sledding &
snow play activities as well as a delicious array
of food is available at the base for those not
wanting to venture further. Each year the resort
welcomes over 100,000 visitors with the ski
season typically running from the end of June
to October.
One of the defining features of Tūroa Ski Field
is its remarkable landscape, characterised
by dramatic volcanic terrain and sweeping
panoramic views to three shores of the
north Island. The surrounding Tongariro
National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage
Site renowned for its natural beauty and
cultural significance is a playground for hikers,
bikers and bird watchers alike. The ski field's
continued success relies on sustainable
practices and environmental stewardship, with
initiatives in place to minimise its ecological
footprint and preserve the natural beauty of the
surrounding landscape. From implementing
renewable energy sources to promoting
responsible waste management, Tūroa is
committed to protecting its pristine alpine
environment for future generations to enjoy.
Skiing and Snowboarding facilities are just one
pull for the thousands of tourists that visit each
year, and the lifts at Tūroa certainly pack a
punch with value for terrain accessed by even
the mid mountain lifts. The Alpine Meadow is a
fantastic beginners area for families venturing
to the snow for the first time. With a carpet
and pomma lift, it is the ideal learning spot.
Paired with a full or half day lesson, the kids
will be cutting corners down the slopes in no
time! On the upper mountain three more chair
lifts provide access to the wide sweeps of
groomed runs and endless off-trail gullies and
chutes. All three have received upgrades over
summer in preparation for winter 2024. The
High Noon Express' 6 seater chairlift reaches
the highest lifted point in New Zealand, where
you'll enjoy panoramic views of North Island .
From here only the best prepared should hike
to see Mt Ruapehu crater lake, a stunning
crystal blue landmark which is outside of the
ski area boundary.
Tūroa Ski Field's cultural significance is deeply
rooted in the rich heritage of the indigenous
Māori people, who are kaitiakitanga (guardians)
of Mt Ruapehu. The national park holds great
spiritual significance for local Māori tribes,
and visitors to Tūroa have the opportunity
to learn about Māori culture through guided
tours, traditional performances, and cultural
experiences. From learning about the ancient
legends and traditions associated with the
mountain to tasting traditional kai (food), the
area offers a unique opportunity to connect
with New Zealand's indigenous heritage.
The township of Ohakune, or "He Ohakune
ki te ao" which broadly translates to "an
opening to a new world", starts at the bottom
of the mountain road and is bursting with snow
enthusiasts in the winter months. The small
community of 1,200 permanent residents is
a blend of born and bred locals and people
from every corner of the world who have come
for a season and instead find a new place
to call home. Renowned for being “Natures
Playground”, there is a network of walking trails
and biking tracks woven through the natural
landmarks across the area. A new mountain
biking track running parallel with the mountain
road is set to open in 2025, which will enable
people to enjoy the beautiful native brush land
which flows out from the mountainous terrain.
Pure Tūroa limited, who were granted a
concession to run the resort in April 2024, are
a group brought together by a shared passion
for Tūroa, Snow Sports and an understanding
of how important the resort is to the economic
and social fabric of the region. With a solid team
of industry professionals at the helm 2024 will
see a revamp for Snow School, Retails and
Hospitality with major renovations taking place
to many of the main base buildings to enhance
the customer experience.
Whether you're carving up the slopes,
immersing yourself in culture, or simply
soaking in the stunning views, Tūroa Ski Field
is an unparalleled journey into the heart of
Aotearoa's winter wonderland. For current
We've adjusted our prices in 2024, offering a variety of passes suitable for all
levels of skiers and snowboarders. Explore options like our lower and upper
mountain passes with weekend and weekday pricing, or enjoy the flexibility of
our three-day pass, usable throughout the season and allowing you to ski or
board at your own pace.
On-site Facilities
At Whakapapa, we're dedicated to providing convenient amenities for your
skiing and snowboarding experience. With cafes, our respected Snow School,
an on-mountain workshop, and quality rentals, we've got everything you need
in one place.
Getting there
Embarking on your journey to Whakapapa is a breeze, with easy access
from the nation’s main centres of Auckland and Wellington. National Park is
conveniently located just a four-hour drive from either city, offering a gateway
to Whakapapa’s winter wonderland. For those flying in, Taupō serves as the
closest domestic airport, a picturesque one-hour and thirty-minute drive to
Whakapapa. Nearby tourist hotspots like Tauranga and Rotorua are also within
easy reach. Alternatively, consider adding an extra layer of excitement to your
adventure by hopping aboard the Northern Explorer train, with National Park
as a main stop. Sit back, relax, and soak in the breath-taking panoramic views
along the way. Weekends tend to see a surge in visitors, particularly from the
cities, and navigating the mountain roads can be daunting for inexperienced
drivers. Fortunately, there are numerous local businesses offering shuttle
services and ride shares from National Park to the ski field. Additionally, we
encourage carpooling through Snow Riders NZ, a free social carpooling
network designed for skiers and snowboarders. For a more locally focused
option, check out the Ruapehu Rideshare Facebook group.
Where to stay
Discover a range of mountain club accommodations conveniently situated
on the mountain itself, providing easy access to the slopes. Alternatively,
accommodation is available at the foot of the hill in Whakapapa Village, with
even more options abound in nearby National Park, just a short 20-minute
drive away. Whether you prefer cosy lodges or budget-friendly stays, there’s
something to suit every traveller’s taste. After an exhilarating day on the slopes,
indulge in some well-deserved relaxation at one of the welcoming local pubs,
where cosy fireplaces await for après-ski enjoyment.
#SneakAWeekday Passes
While the allure of Whakapapa is undeniable, it’s important to note that
weekends tend to draw larger crowds, with nearly half of all guests at Mt
Ruapehu visiting during this time. This means that weekdays offer the perfect
opportunity to experience wide-open spaces and fewer crowds. Plus, there’s
an added benefit: weekday lift passes are more budget-friendly, priced from
$39, making them a more accessible option for those seeking adventure
without the weekend rush.
THE WORLD’S
WARMEST BASELAYER ®
Now available in Australia and New Zealand, Japanese baselayer brand Zerofit has created a range of game-changing, best-in-class
products that allow skiers and snowboarders to stay warm on the slopes, even in the coldest of conditions.
Designed by a passionate team of innovators and baselayer specialists, the Zerofit Heatrub Ultimate is the most technically
advanced baselayer on the planet and completely different to any other product you’ve ever worn before.
WHAT MAKES IT SO GOOD?
1. It’s five times warmer than a
standard baselayer
That is quite a claim, but it’s a fact. Tested at the
iconic Boken Institute in Osaka, the Heatrub
Ultimate baselayer recorded a Heat Retention
Rating of 0.78; a standard product would have a
rating of between 0.1 to 0.14, while a jumper
would typically have a rating of 0.3. The Ultimate
performs best in a temperature range of -10°
Celsius thru 10° Celsius, making it an essential
piece of kit for the whole season.
3. Fewer layers, greater
warmth and freedom to move
The Ultimate is the ideal product for skiers
and snowboarders who dislike traditional
tight baselayers. Previously, you may have
‘layered up’ in order to combat the effects
of cold weather – however, bulky layers
can restrict your movements. This is where
we are changing the game. The Ultimate is
so good at keeping you warm, you won’t
need these multiple additional layers..
2. Instant warmth the moment 4. Heat Threads for top-totoe
warmth this winter
you put it on
A standard baselayer traps body heat between Innovative ‘Heat Threads’ positioned on
your skin and the material, so it takes a little time the inside of the garment gently rub
before you feel the benefits. With the Heatrub against your skin as you move, which
Ultimate, five separate fabrics, along with a creates positive warmth across your body.
as soon as you pull it on. While other brands rely Leggings and Socks that are made from
on compression for heat, our unique fabric mix the same material and work in exactly the
means you don’t need the tightness in order for it same way, so you can have top-to-toe
to work, making it super comfortable too. warmth with Zerofit.
ADAPTABLE WARMTH THE HEATRUB
MOVE BASELAYER
The Ultimate baselayer is perfect for the
coldest of conditions, but it is
complemented by the Heatrub Move
($109.95), which is twice as warm as a
standard baselayer and ideal for more
active and accomplished skiers and
snowboarders who will build up a sweat.
The Move features a 45% polypropylene
construction on the inside of the
baselayer and a hollow polyester shell that
combine for this concept of ‘Adaptable
Warmth’, keeping you cosy when you’re at
a standstill yet regulating temperature
and ensuring you don’t overheat as the
day goes on. The construction removes
sweat from the skin and evaporates it off
the surface of the baselayer quickly, so
that nasty feeling of ‘cold sweat’ never
materialises, and the product has been
innovated to work best in a temperature
range of between -5° and 12° Celsius.
SKI MOJO: One minute to install, feel 20 years younger
Developed using medical insights Ski Mojo is a device that uses spring
recoil technology to take up to a third of the strain off the legs and knees by
providing kinetic energy to assist leg extension.
Since its launch in 2007 the Ski Mojo has been developed and honed
into the latest version. The Ski Mojo works like an exoskeleton for the
legs consisting of a lightweight comfortable harness with neoprene knee
supports containing powerful springs. Ski Mojo enables the wearer to
ski for longer and avoids the leg pain and fatigue they would otherwise
experience.
This supplements the power of your leg muscles and reduces the effects
of impact significantly reducing pain in legs and knees. No more thigh burn
and late session fatigue.
It is an exoskeleton for the legs worn discreetly and invisibly under your ski
trousers. The power to engage the support is easily turned on and off by
switches which are easily accessible, even with ski gloves on.
• Quick and easy to use
• Comfortable
• One size fits all
• Suitable for skiers,
snowboarders, telemarkers
from your ski pass
Get rid of your pain, Increase your safety
Boost your thighs - Relieve your hips and back - Reduce the pressure on
your knees - Delay muscle fatigue - Reduce the risk of injury
ZEROFIT/HEATRUB ULTIMATE BASELAYER
RRP: $129.95 SPECS: Japanese apparel specialist
Zerofit are now keeping skiers and snowboarders
in Australia and New Zealand warmer than
ever on the slopes, with their Heatrub Ultimate
Baselayer that has been independently tested
and proven to be FIVE TIMES WARMER than a
standard product
That’s quite a claim, but here’s the science to back
it up. The Heatrub Ultimate was independently
tested for heat retention levels at the Boken
Quality Evaluation Institute, Japan’s leading
comprehensive testing organisation that evaluates
clothing and textiles.
A standard baselayer would have a heat retention
rating in the region of 0.1-0.14. Testing at the
Institute showed the Heatrub Ultimate to have a
rating of 0.78, five times warmer than a regular
baselayer product, in temperatures as low as
minus 10° Celsius. But how does it work?
Technologically enhanced ‘Heat Threads’ inside
the garment are activated through even the
slightest of movements, gently brushing against
the skin to generate warmth instantly.
Unlike most other baselayers, the Ultimate does
not work on the basis of ‘compression for heat’
– so not only does it provide greater levels of
warmth, but it does so with a less restrictive fit,
giving you maximum range of movement on the
slopes.
Available in black, grey or navy in sizes XS-XXXL
ZEROFIT/HEATRUB MOVE BASELAYER RRP:
$109.95 SPECS: The most versatile product in the
Zerofit Collection, the Heatrub Move Baselayer
offers twice as much warmth as a standard
baselayer, but separate innovations within the
construction of the garment also wick away
moisture and provide temperature regulation
perfection, so as your day progresses, you won’t
overheat. WWW.ZEROFIT.COM.AU
ZEROFIT/HEATRUB MOVE HOODIE
RRP: $109.95 SPECS: The perfect layer to wear
over the base, the Heatrub Move Hoodie is
manufactured using the same innovations as the
baselayer of the same name, but the looser fit
allows for maximum comfort and versatility, as
well as delivering outstanding levels of warmth.
