First Nations culture in focus
at range of events in Parramatta

Parramatta is putting the spotlight on
First Nations culture, with a line-up
of events taking place across the city
to celebrate the Burramattagal people’s
connection to the land.
City of Parramatta’s annual Warami – the
Dharug word for ‘good to see you’ – has
returned to deliver an eight-week program
of First Nations art, music, storytelling and
culture to the people of western Sydney.
Warami kicked off with National Sorry Day
on May 26, which brought people together
for a day of acknowledgement, reflection and
healing to honour the Stolen Generations.
This year, for the first time, the local Council
will also be hosting the family-friendly Stories
Under the Stars event on June 1 from 3pm, as
part of National Reconciliation Week.
To be held along the Parramatta River
Foreshore, it will feature an outdoor cinema,
performances, traditional workshops and
activities, as well as a chance to meet former
Parramatta Eels star Dean Widders and watch
his film ‘Araatika! Rise Up!’.
Other Parramatta Eels players are also
anticipated to stop by to meet locals in the
afternoon, including proud Kimilaroi woman
Mahalia Murphy.
Parramatta’s first ever glow-in-the-dark art
The annual celebration of Burramatta NAIDOC will feature an
outdoor concert, workshops and markets.
installation at the newly named Yilabara Path
will also be featured during the event. Located
at 78 Phillip Street, the artwork was created by
First Nations artist Leanne Redpath Watson
in collaboration with artists Tina Barahanos
and Alexandra Byrne.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre Esber
said Stories Under the Stars is a chance for the
community to recognise, learn and celebrate
the city’s rich First Nations culture and heritage.
“Parramatta is leading the way with this
unique celebration at the Parramatta River
Foreshore and by transforming one of its
laneways into a First Nations arts and culture
masterpiece,” Esber said.
“The incredible glow-in-the-dark artwork
at Yilabara Path is not only a work that rivals
other street art across other parts of greater
Sydney but provides a safe passage for pedestrians
and cyclists travelling at night.

weaving, astronomy and poetry workshops,
cooking demonstrations or enjoy live music,
the markets or the outdoor cinema, you won’t
be disappointed.”
The annual celebration of Burramatta
NAIDOC, to take place on July 13, will mark
the end of Warami with a major outdoor
concert, workshops and market stalls.
