LOCAL NEWS Uproar over new units Andrew Charlton is pushing a petition to prevent high-rise units in Harris Park ELLIE BUSBY Federal Member for Parramatta Dr Andrew Charlton is urging locals to sign a petition to stop a proposal for 483 new high-rise units in Harris Park, warning it will spell “disaster” for locals. Over a year since a plan to replace a former pharmaceutical site with a $147 million residential apartment development over three buildings was revealed, residents are still fighting against it. Under the plans, buildings would vary from four to eight storeys in height, with the application saying half of it will be affordable housing and half for long-term renters through build-to-rent accommodation. Located at 2a Gregory Place, the proposed site sits at the “midpoint of three of the most significant houses in Australia” – Hambledon Cottage, Elizabeth Farm and Experiment Farm Cottage. It would also overlook the popular Our Lady of Lebanon Co-Cathedral. Its proximity to such historic and important local buildings has left locals, heritage advocates and Government representatives frustrated. “I think this will be a disaster for Harris Park and Parramatta,” Charlton told Parra News. “It’s a cry from the heart, we’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of community Andrew Charlton said the proposed development would mean “no more blue skies” for the Maronite community. Photo: Melinda Jane. concern about this. “There were 104 submissions made against the development on the NSW Planning Portal, the Change.org petition has 5,295 signatures, it’s one of the biggest uproars from the community that I’ve seen.” The owner of the site, 2A Gregory Place Pty Limited, has still yet to respond to the submissions made. It includes an objection by City of Parramatta Council on the grounds the development is inconsistent with the character of the surrounding area. The planning application will ultimately be decided by the NSW Government. But with the state currently in a housing crisis and a need for more affordable housing remaining a top priority, it’s unclear what will win out – protection of heritage or more accommodation. Charlton acknowledges there’s a strong need for more housing in Parramatta, but believes it shouldn’t be at the cost of nationally significant sites. “Obviously we need more housing in Parramatta, but that housing needs to be in the right spot,” he said. “We’ve got lots of new developments going up in the CBD, this one is just right in the middle of the most significant heritage precincts not just in Parramatta, but in Australia. “So, yes, we need housing, but not housing at any cost, at any place – it’s the right housing in the right place.” Committed to making sure the contentious development doesn’t go ahead, Charlton has since started a petition online, saying the development will mean “no more blue skies” for the local community. “We’ve launched our petition, we’ve met with the National Trust to get support about launching an application to list the area… so this is part of our plan going forward to get National Heritage Listing of the precinct,” he said. “That National Heritage Listing would go some way to protecting it or preventing the development.” Find the petition at www.andrewcharlton. com.au/have-your-say/stop-gregory-place. Guest Columnist Chris Minns, NSW Premier @ChrisMinnsMP We need kids to have happy lives outside of their phone screens As parents in the modern world, we are all grappling with the enormous role that social media plays in the life of our children. Where previous generations were out riding their bikes, moving through nature, building their friendships in person, young people today are learning about life via various screens, on websites that have little interest in their healthy development.
