SeeMYChild
Volunteer Spotlight:
DONNA TRUMBO
SeeMYchild, whose tagline
is “ensuring every
child is seen, heard,
and loved,” truly believes in
living out the African proverb
"It takes a village to raise a
child." By showcasing the
phenomenal feats of youth,
coordinating community events
that acknowledge momentous
cultural occasions—including
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and
Juneteenth—and facilitating
courageous conversations
focused on DEIB (diversity,
equity, inclusion, and belonging),
the organization aims to build
open, healthy, and inclusive
communities that allow students
to thrive. The nonprofit also
helps high school students
develop their leadership skills
and provides scholarships
to graduating seniors who
demonstrate financial need.

What made you want to become a
volunteer for seeMYchild? When I
was younger, I got teased for being
Asian, and there was no support
system to remind me that it was
okay to be me in a predominately
white environment. Knowing your
identity and being proud of it is
something every child, parent,
teacher, co-worker, boss, and
community leader deserves. Raising
awareness about embracing one’s
identity through special events
can transform the way we look at
one another and bring our diverse
community together.
What do your volunteer duties
entail? I help facilitate educational
forums and coordinate booths at
seeMYchild’s community events.
Is there training required? No.
What’s the time commitment?
Volunteers should expect to join
weekly, one-hour event prep
meetings, and be available to help
about eight hours on event days.
What’s been the best day of
volunteering so far? This past
January, seeMYchild hosted the
sixth annual Placer County MLK, Jr.
Day March & Family Celebration.
I’ve watched the event grow from
roughly 150 participants to 400.
It’s so exciting, heartwarming, and
encouraging to see the community
support our events.
What’s one of the biggest
challenges? The most pressing need
is bringing a fund developer on
board, ensuring seeMYchild can grow
its programming and employees.
The goal is to eventually have a brick
and mortar: a safe environment for
youths to build relationships, gain
self-esteem, and thrive.
