Bath treats
I’m going to skip over the usual oils,
here, and talk about bath salts –
because this is where all the action
is, tub-wise, right now. And there’s
a reason for their popularity. When
you soak in a bath of mineral-infused
water, science has now confirmed that
those minerals are indeed absorbed
by the body. Now, this is a complete
turnaround from what I was told at
the beginning of my beauty writing
career, when ‘experts’ insisted: ‘The
skin is like a raincoat. It keeps
everything out.’ With the skin now
harnessed in medicine to deliver all
kinds of drugs – from HRT to patches
that help withdrawal from nicotine
– that’s clearly, well, balderdash.
When it comes to bathing, the
mineral magnesium is particularly
valuable – great to beckon sleep and
relax the body, potentially helping
with rheumatic pains, too. I’m a fan

Bath Salts, which contain no less

pine leaf, eucalyptus, together with
Shungite crystal powder ‘to neutralise
electro-magnetic energy.’ Not for
nothing do these have a reputation
as ‘a good night’s sleep in a jar’.
At the high street end, I’m a
massive fan of M&S Apothecary
Women’s Calm Bath Salts, £7.50
for 300g, which soothe the senses
with cedarwood, lavender and sweet
orange. (The whole M&S CALM
Apothecary range is worth checking
out, actually.) I honestly find that
adding therapeutic salts to my bath
does as much to relax
my muscles –
even after a
heavy bout of
gardening – as
a massage,
and I can
just flop into
bed afterwards.
But the bottom
line, is whether you’re a speedy
shower-er or love a languid soak, there
are plenty options for coming clean,
