CHASNY 

Kennar dedicated forty-four years of his career to Boeing 

Satellite Development Center as an Electronics Test Engineer 

until his retirement in 2017. Outside of work, he found joy in 

camping and motorcycle rides, often combining the two during Memorial Day weekends. 

His life took a new turn when he met Tawnee at work, leading to their marriage in ‘79. This 

marked a shift in Kennar’s hobbies as he traded his motorcycle for a modest mobile home, 

going on annual trips to Portland, Oregon, to visit Tawnee’s family. Despite Tawnee’s 

passing, Kennar continued their literary legacy by co-authoring books like Ting! The 

Silent Warning and Carlton: Down Sized, preserving their shared passions and memories.

A Literary Luminary, Lourdes J. Astraquillo- 

Ongkeko’s Life and Legacy 

In the grand canvas of human history, 

there are individuals whose lives serve as 

testaments of fortitude, individuals whose 

stories echo through the corridors of time, 

inspiring generations with their strength and 

love. Among these luminaries stands Lourdes 

J. Astraquillo-Ongkeko, Ph.D., whose journey 

through the tumultuous era of World War II shaped 

her life and her commitment to the power of the 

written word. 

Born amidst the ravages of conflict, Lourdes, 

affectionately known as Ludy, experienced 

the harsh realities of war as a young girl in the 

Philippines. The specter of violence loomed large 

over her childhood as her homeland became a 

battleground for forces beyond her control. Yet, 

even in the darkest times, Ludy’s spirit shone 

brightly, fueled by a love for storytelling that 

would become the guiding light of her life. 

From her earliest days, Ludy displayed a 

precocious talent for writing, capturing the essence 

of her hometown with an eloquence that belied her 

tender years. A school essay penned in sixth grade 

catapulted her into the spotlight, winning national 

acclaim and setting the stage for a future defined 

by literary excellence. Along with her literary 

prowess, Ludy also excelled in academia and 

oratory, earning accolades that foreshadowed the 

remarkable trajectory of her career. 

As the clouds of war began to dissipate and the 

Philippines emerged from the shadows of conflict, 

Ludy’s journey took her to the bustling streets 

of Manila, where she pursued higher education 

at the prestigious University of the Philippines. 

In a mere eight semesters, she completed her 

bachelor’s degree with distinction, laying the 

foundation for a career that would span decades 

and transcend borders. 

In 1949, Ludy pursued journalism, joining the 

ranks of the Manila Daily Bulletin as a reporter. 

Her incisive prose and unwavering commitment to 

truth-telling endeared her to readers, establishing 

her as a voice in Philippine journalism. But it 

was not just her professional accomplishments 

that defined Ludy’s legacy; her warm love story 

captured the hearts of those who knew her best. 

On a fateful Valentine’s Day in 1952, Ludy 

exchanged vows with Hermie T. Ongkeko, a fellow 

wordsmith whose passion for writing mirrored

her own. Their union, spanning over six decades, 

underscores the power and beauty of love in the 

face of adversity. Together, they navigated life’s 

trials and triumphs, finding solace and strength in 

each other’s embrace. 

Tragically, Ludy’s beloved Hermie passed away, 

leaving a void that could never be filled. Yet, even 

in her grief, Ludy found solace in the written word, 

turning to writing as a refuge and a vocation. Her 

columns in the Philippine News and contributions 

to TheFilAm provided a platform for her to share 

her wisdom and wit with readers, cementing her 

status as a literary luminary of unparalleled grace 

and resilience. 

Her unwavering commitment to the written 

word continues to inspire aspiring writers and 

journalists, reminding us all of the power of 

storytelling in our lives. 

In Lourdes J. Astraquillo-Ongkeko, Ph.D., we 

find not just a writer but a beacon of hope in a 

world too often overshadowed by darkness. Her 

life attests that love can conquer even the greatest 

of trials. As we turn the pages of her memoir and

Born in rural New York, Fred Nelson 

completed his degree at the Massachusetts 

Institute of Technology. Shortly after, he 

served in the Air Force at Wright Patterson 

Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, where 

his relationship with canoeing started as 

he traversed the Little Miami River. The 

author continued his canoe trips throughout 

various locations in the northern wilderness 

of Canada, ending in either the Arctic 

Ocean or Hudson Bay. He amassed a 

total of 4500 miles on canoe trips lasting 

between 11 to 36 days.

HE ICE 

The cold northern regions of Canada are home to the Thlewiaza 

River. In 1978, Fred Nelson embarked on his journey down the 

Thlewiaza River as recounted in the book. Nelson recounts the 

stories of his adventures with five other canoe enthusiasts as 

they embark on their journey down the Thlewiaza River to the 

Hudson Bay, then north to Arviat, previously known as Eskimo 

Point. Eighty miles of ice blocked their way after six days into 

the trip, so they diverted the journey over ice and snow to the 

Seal River, then south on Hudson Bay to Churchill. Throughout 

the adventure, they are faced with various tribulations in their 

adventures, such as maneuvering through the icy waters, 

dangerous rapids, encounters with local bears, and a stormy 

night in the bay. 

His memoirs were logged by a 

friend, and were read by his wife. 

Nelson’s wife was unable to put 

the log down as she read through 

it. This served as the spark that 

led Nelson to begin his work on 

reminiscing about the adventure 

in the cold Canadian north in 

his book The Thlewiaza- Seal
