Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or,
maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent
dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on
what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked
about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served
us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land.
The place: Lucky Bones Back Water Grille on Route 109 South. This
Cape May restaurant is just after the bridge coming into town, across
the street from the Lobster House.
The vibe: We went for a slightly early dinner on Friday night to beat
the rush, though when we arrived it was a packed parking lot. Lucky for
us, Lucky Bones offers tons of dining space plus bar seating, so we still
made it in time to get sat right away. We were seated in the main dining
room just along the banquet, not far from the bar or kitchen and in perfect
view of their specials board. Our server Kadie was kind enough to
run through everything with us and made wonderful recommendations
— always good when you’re up for trying something new!
The drinks: We didn’t stray too far from our usual drinks — Nicole
enjoyed their signature Primo Cosmo and it was so delicious she had
two. Dan was craving a beer and had a few Miller High Lifes... very
unusual, but an ice-cold beer hit the spot... so he says.
The food: Now, more about those wonderful recommendations!
Dan couldn’t pass up trying their lobster bisque which typically flies out
the kitchen, they run out by the end of the night. Dan confidently agreed
it must after the first few bites. Nicole started with a small Caesar salad
while they both dug into their famous fresh bread with oil — a favorites
of nearly all guests. What we’ve never done at Lucky Bones was have a
brick-oven pizza, so we decided to give it a try! We split the Skip Jack Pie
— thin crust pizza topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, arugula and
prosciutto. There were a few rogue shreds of arugula left and maybe a
small piece of crust by the end of the meal. It was just the right amount
of food for two people and definitely something we plan to try more
often — after all they have so many different kinds of pies!
The takeaway: Lucky Bones is open for lunch and dinner daily and
serves breakfast Friday-Sun from 8-11am. You can also grab takeout if
you want to spend the evening at home. Order online or call the restaurant
to place an order — and be sure to try that lobster bisque.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
As has become our habit, friend Don
Freiday and I spent the World Series
of Birding on the hawkwatch platform
at Cape May Point State Park.
Our dawn-to-mid-afternoon effort
garnered about 78 species. A far cry from
the 120 or so species we used to tally doing
a midnight to midnight full-state run, but
fun and challenging enough for two old and
infirm students of birds. Our effort was aided
by Don’s remarkable ears which added at least
40 species to our list.
Mother’s Day Weekend is the chosen day
of the event because it is the weekend offering
peak bird diversity in New Jersey — a time
when lingering winter species and breeding
birds overlap and Spring migration is
at its peak. Our notable sightings include a
Swallow-tailed Kite which was soaring with
Broad-winged Hawks. This marks the first
time a Swallow-tailed Kite has been tallied
in the 41-year-old event. Breeding no farther
north than North Carolina, the Osprey-sized,
splay-tailed raptor is accidental in Cape May.
Happily, a number of teams managed to tally
the bird first reported by Tom Reed from the
dune cross over at Coral Ave. Our biggest
miss was Song Sparrow, which nests in the
dunes near the Hawk Watch. Shorebirds were
scant due to the high water levels in Bunker
Pond. Last year we tallied both Greater and
Lesser Yellowlegs but not this year. This
year’s effort was aided by northerly winds that
pushed raptors our way and dropped tired
migrants into the dunes all morning. After the
winds turned easterly, we called it a day. East
winds are the kiss of death for land migrants.
The great thing about doing a Big Stay on
the platform is all the other teams that show
up. We shared the Swallow-tailed Kite with
a Cornell University team competing in the
zero-carbon category. No cars, just bikes.
Other teams limit their World Series runs
to Cape May County only. Those teams competing
in the full state category have dwindled
over time and now LGA (limited geographic
area) efforts are the norm. Competing against
a par value established for every NJ county. A
team limiting their effort to an urban county
like Bergen County, can compete with teams
birding in bird-rich Cape May. A national
birding competition is in New Jersey as it’s
a bird rich state, one of only four where over
200 species have been tallied in a single day.
Texas and California host more species, but
their size makes it impossible to knit the different
habitats together in 24 hours. Different
habitats equal different species.

It has arrived! This is the weekend where
everybody “out there” starts thinking
about going “downa” shore. We feel it on
the streets! It kind of feels like a Mad Max
movie when the crowds come, right?
Speaking of which, there are plenty of cool
films to see this summer — that is, when you
can catch your breath for a moment!
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is one of the most
anticipated summer blockbusters — and it
comes out this weekend. Indications are that
it may not be as strong as the first reimagined
offering nearly a decade ago. Mad Max: Fury
Road (2015) won multiple Oscars and won me
over. It was a feast for the eyes!
Before you start thinking all I talk about
is post-apocalyptic dystopian flicks (see my
column last week), let’s look at other movies.
Planet of the Apes started in 1968 with a
relaunch in 2011. The original won one honorary
Oscar for makeup in 1969 and the more
current movies have always been nominated
for Best Visual Effects (haven’t won yet). The
latest film, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,
The Movie Column

is being well received so far! Oh wait. This
whole franchise is post-apocalyptic, right?
Only with apes… let me try another.
Joker was a major hit in 2019 with 11
Oscars nominations and two wins (one for
lead Joaquin Phoenix). This summer, Phoenix
is back — and now he has found his true
love, the legendary villainous character Harley
Quinn. Joker: Folie à Deux is — believe it or
not — a musical. So who will play Quinn?
How about Lady Gaga! Ugh. Gotham is a sort
of dystopian city I guess, right? All right, all
right. Give me another chance.
Let’s talk about sequels and reprisals.
Inside Out 2 brings back the emotions (Joy,
Sadness, Anger, Fear, Disgust) to explore the
next chapter in Reilly’s young life — namely,
adolescence. Eddie Murphy reprises one of
his first roles in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Will
Smith and Martin Lawrence are back as edgy
cops in another Bad Boys movie. Deadpool &
Wolverine is a blockbuster getting a lot of push
considering it doesn’t come out until late July.
Back to Black is a biopic about the eclectic
soul and R&B singer/songwriter Amy
Winehouse. And while we’re talking about
“based on a true story,” let’s not forget the
movie Sing Sing starring Oscar nominated
Colman Domingo (star of Rustin). In this
film, Domingo portrays an inmate who creates
theatrical productions inside a prison.
So plenty of cool movies to choose from
— dystopian or not. What’s on your watchlist?

visit to Cape May is expensive —
worth it, but pricey. There are some
ways to make your trip more affordable
without cutting down on the
enjoyment. I’m not talking about
being a cheapskate. After all, in the wise words
of Dolly Levi, “Money, pardon the expression,
is like manure. It’s not worth a thing unless it’s
spread around, encouraging young things to
grow.” If you like a store or restaurant, support
it by spending your money there. If, however,
money is tight, there are ways to be frugal.
You’ve taken the first step — browse
through Exit Zero and This Week In Cape
May to find discounts. Visit Cape May MAC’s
website (capemaymac.org) for info about free
experiences, like their scavenger hunt, story
stops and Carroll Gallery Exhibits. Become
a member of MAC to get discounts on tours.
Plan ahead to book your accommodations,
and, if you can, consider a midweek trip,
when many of your favorite places offer deals.
For example, if a Harry’s Orange Crush is a
vacation tradition, go on Wednesday. The Exit
Zero Filling Station has Thursday specials — a
$5 burger and $3 beer. Consider early bird
specials like Iccara and enjoy three courses
for $35 per person, plus tax from 4-5pm.
Remember to tip on the non-discount price.
If you like your beach vacation with a side
of theater, the East Lynne Theater Company
has affordable single show tickets, and season
tickets are available for a limited time. Try the
dinner and a show option at Cape May Stage
or consider a season subscription. Look for
the free events in town, like band concerts at
the Rotary Park gazebo and Thursday Movies
on the Beach starting in July. You can also visit
the Cape May County Zoo!
Take a “real estate bike tour” and pedal
the streets of Cape May, dreaming of the
house you’d buy and the way you’d decorate it.
Attend community events like the Strawberry
Festival in Wilbraham Park in West Cape May
on Saturday, June 1 (rain date June 2) 9am-5
pm. Admission is free, there’s music all day,
and you can buy food from a variety of vendors.
Visit the Garden Club’s Flower Show on
June 1 at Convention Hall from 10am-4pm.
Admission is $3.
Use those famous CVS coupons for sunscreen.
Buy the Exit Zero Discount Deck for
$20 and take advantage of 50 discounts. Find
paper or digital coupons for things like the Salt
Marsh Safari and whale watching and check
local miniature golf location to find their most
affordable hours. Ask about student, military,

OSCAR is a lively 10-month-old mixed Boston
terrier who was found wandering. He
came to the shelter and no one came for him,
so he’s ready to be adopted. Oscar is a bundle
of energy and has some work to do on his
leash manners. He is dog and cat social and
would make the perfect family companion for
someone who will work on his manners.
JACKS is a four-year-old mixed breed who
came to the shelter when his owner could no
longer care for him. Jacks enjoys a lively game
of fetch and playing in the yard. He knows several
behavior cues and sits when asked. He has
good leash skills but is learning to trust people
near his food. Older children and no other animals
would be best.
CALI came to the shelter a very shy stray
but is warming up and very lovable. She is a
one-and-a-half-year-old girl who has good
leash skills and is always checking in with
her human. Cali is a sensitive girl who understands
quiet interactions and would thrive in a
home with other dogs and that would appreciate
this gentle soul.

DOVE is a beautiful girl who came to the
shelter when she and her brother Dallas were
dumped in a rural area. She is about one-anda-half
years old and in good health. Dove has
a great, positive nature about her. She’d be
wonderful in a home with other cats and children,
and is up to date on all vaccinations and

DALLAS is a handsome boy who came to
the shelter when he and his sister Dove were

playful cat that’s up to date on all vaccinations

YOKO was brought to the shelter in October
2022 with a litter of kittens. They were
