Academic RegaliaMaceTraditionally carried in procession and mounted on stage whenever degrees aregranted or when the faculty assembles in formal academic dress, our mace wasdesigned and created by Joel Peck, professor of art history, David Reich, professorof welding, and Howard Russo, professor emeritus of visual arts. It was funded bythe Elgin Community College Faculty Association as a gift to ECC President DavidSam in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the college in 2010.Lamp of KnowledgeFeatured on the college’s official college seal and shown on stage duringcommencement, the lamp symbolizes the illumination of the mind throughscholarly pursuits. It is an indicator of intellectual and spiritual insight. Ourlamp was made by Howard Russo, professor emeritus of visual arts. FormerDean David Broad and Professor Emeritus E. Basic gowns have full sleeves. Bachelor’sgowns have long pointed sleeves. A master’s gown has sleeves with oblong panels. A doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeveswith three horizontal bars. An associate’s hood has a colored lining but no trim. A bachelor’s hood is trimmed with a narrowvelvet band. A master’s hood is longer and trimmed. A doctor’s hood has a rounded base and is trimmed with a velvetborder. The Oxford cap is black with a long tassel.
