CUMBERLAND COUNCIL URGED TO OVERTURN CONTROVERSIAL SAME-SEX BOOK BAN
APPALLED &
SADDENED
ELLIE BUSBY
Locals and the State
Government have
hit back at a move by
Cumberland Council to ban
same-sex literature in local
libraries.
And even library staff are
bewildered by the decision,
with one staff member
telling Parra News: “I would
like our LGBTQI community
to know that the library staff
are appalled and deeply
saddened by this decision.”
The staff member, who
wishes to remain anonymous,
said: “This was not
our choice. Our libraries
are places where everyone
is welcome and every type
of family is safe with us. We
will always do our best for
you all.”
It comes as New South
Wales Premier Chris Minns
slammed the ban, driven by
Councillor and former Mayor
Steve Christou.
School’s Reconciliation Day
Council hosted its School’s Reconciliation Day
at Prospect Hill recently. Over 300 students from
13 primary and high schools across Cumberland
attended to engage with our First Nations people
and learn more about Aboriginal culture through
art, dance and storytelling. The event was held to
commemorate a significant and historic meeting
between First Nations People and European
settlers on 3 May 1805. It was a great opportunity
for students to immerse themselves in Aboriginal
culture and mix with students from other local
primary and high schools.
Exploring local history at Council’s Author Talks
I recently attended the Author Talk ‘Auburn ANZACS, Auburn’s Fallen Soldiers of the
Great War’ by local author Ron Inglis. The book focuses on Ron’s search of the Roll of
Honours in Auburn to identify the names of local
soldiers in memorials around NSW and overseas.
Here I met Kathy Marriot, the granddaughter of
former Auburn Mayor and World War One veteran
who fought and died in the in the Great War of
1914-1918, Alderman Corporal William James
Johnson. Corporal Johnson who later became
known as the ‘Soldier Mayor’ enlisted into the army
in his late forties, which was very rare for an older
man and a Mayor to sign up for active service on
the front line. This book is available to read at
Pressure to reverse ban
Councillors to meet this week
Story continued from » p. 1
“It seems to me to be engineered
by one of these Councillors
because there’s an election coming
up. What a joke,” Minns said.
“[Christou] should trust his own
citizens enough to walk into a
library and read whatever the hell
they want.”
At the latest meeting, Cumberland
Council voted on a new library
strategy, with an amendment put
forward by Christou.
The amendment called for immediate
action to rid same-sex parents
books in Council’s library service.
It passed, with Our Local Community
Councillors Christou, Paul
Garrard and Helen Hughes, and
Independents Michael Zaiter and
Greg Cummings all voting in favour
of the ban.
Labor Councillor Mohammad
Hussein also voted for the amendment.
The Councillors who voted against
it were Mayor and Labor Councillor
Lisa Lake, as well as Labor’s Diane
Colman, Glenn Elmore, Kun Huang
and Suman Saha.
Christou said he had received
“very disturbing complaints from
distraught local parents” regarding
a same-sex parent book that was
found in the kids section of a local
library.
“This is not Marrickville or
Newtown, this is Cumberland City
Council and we need to respect the
wishes of our residents,” he said.
“It is imperative that we take a
stand, our community don’t want
this, I never want these on our library
shelves and I hope we can respect
the wishes of our community and
protect our kids, who shouldn’t be
exposed to sexualised behaviour
through same-sex parents books.
“Hands off our kids.”
Following the voting of the
amendment, Colman said she will
be putting in a recission motion at
the next Council Meeting to revoke
the book ban.
“There is no way that censorship
is acceptable in our community
anywhere at all,” she added.
“I’m disgusted, I feel sorry for all
those poor women who run the
libraries and do such good work for
our community. I just can’t even
believe that you could have done
this.”
After news of the book ban broke,
NSW Arts Minister John Graham
Steve Christou has been successful
in banning same-sex parents books
across Cumberland’s libraries.
warned that the decision could
affect the local Council’s ability to
continue to receive State funding.
“When civilisations turn to burning
books or banning books it is a
very bad sign. That is equally true
for local Councils,” he said.
“It should not be up to local Councillors
to make that choice for them
or engage in censorship.
“We are examining the consequences
this decision may have for
the Council continuing to receive
library funding from the NSW
Government.”
NSW Minister for Climate Change,
Energy, Environment and Heritage
Penny Sharpe also condemned the
The book Steve Christou alleges
to have found in the Children’s
section at Merrylands Library.
ban in a post shared to X (formerly
Twitter).
“Supporting families is one of the
best things Local, State and Federal
Governments can do. Banning
books about families is one of the
worst things,” she said.
“Cumberland Council, time to
reverse this decision.”
A petition has since been started
online by a local resident, urging
Council to rescind the book ban.
“My local Council, Cumberland
Council, passed a motion that made
me fear for the safety of the rainbow
families in our community and the
future cohesion of our community,”
the petition said.
NSW Arts Minister John Graham
has hit back at the Council’s book
ban. Photo: Melinda Jane.
“Our area welcomes people of all
backgrounds and beliefs, we’re not
about banning books just because
someone does not like who is in
them.”
The book ban comes after the
same Council banned drag story
time events being held at Council
facilities across the Local Government
Area (LGA) earlier this year,
despite there being no plans to hold
any such events.
The petition is at www.equalityaustralia.org.au/our-work/areasof-work/cumberland-council.
Grand Final nobody knows about
The A-League Grand Final is less than a
fortnight away and I reckon if I walked down
Church Street today and asked 50 people
which four teams remain in the competition,
nobody would be able to tell me.
The top club football competition in this
country is now a second rate, forgotten part of
the Australian sporting landscape.
The library holds a special place in our society.
As a repository of creativity, information
and knowledge. A community meeting place.
A place for people to access books, toys, photocopiers
and computers who would otherwise
go without.
They are a refuge for young and old, from students
analysing microfilm to seniors scouring
the newspaper clippings. Braille, audiobooks
and foreign language collections ensure the
wonder of learning is open to all.
In one form or another, libraries have been
around for centuries. Centralised collections,
housing everything from religious texts to
scrolls and administrative documents, date
back to ancient civilisations like Egypt’s Library
of Alexandria, established in the 3rd
century BC. Or the Imperial Library of the Han
Dynasty and the House of Wisdom in Baghdad.
Through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance,
the invention of movable type led to an
explosion in the number of printed books and
the establishment of the public lending libraries
we know today.
Not only do they represent a metaphoric
public square of scholarship and ideas, very
often they are located within one, close to
shopping centres and transport routes. Here
in Parramatta, our main library is actually
located within our city’s main civic building,
while suburban branch libraries exist everywhere
from Carlingford to Wentworth Point,
Merrylands and Regents Park.
By now, everyone would have heard about
last week’s decision by Cumberland Council
Alan Mascarenhas
Life & Style..........................................15-16
Entertainment.................................17-27
How times have changed.
Remember a decade ago when the rise of the
Western Sydney Wanderers was meant to have
every other sport shaking in its boots?
The sugar hit quickly wore off, and through
poor media deals, a host of off-field issues
and bad management, the A-League is now a
shadow of its former self.
(via a narrow 6-5 majority) to ban a book depicting
same-sex parenting. A sincere expression
of religious belief and local community
values, as purported by some councillors? Or
censorship, discrimination and the importation
of the worst of American-style culture
wars? Take your pick.
The move clearly has at least tacit approval
in some quarters. But it has also sparked criticism,
including from the likes of normally
more conservative commentators such as Andrew
Bolt and 2GB’s Chris O’Keefe. A petition
from Equality Australia has attracted nearly
40,000 signatures.
We need to be honest about why this controversy
has flared. The reality is that nearly
seven years after the successful plebiscite in
Australia, which resulted in marriage between
same-sex couples being made legal, considerable
differences continue to exist in sections
of the community. Federal electorates in
parts of Western Sydney recorded some of the
country’s highest ‘No’ votes. It is possible that
some of this opposition has softened with the
passage of time. Nonetheless, it bears reminding
that in 2024, marriage equality is legally
recognised in less than 40 countries.
Campaigning last year, I remember encountering
locals who were opposed to the Voice to
Parliament referendum on grounds that they
had voted ‘No’ to the 2017 plebiscite and felt
their opinions had been unheard. Irrespective
of the fact that recognition of indigenous Australians
and marriage equality are completely
different issues, these people connected them
Business Directory....................28-29
Sport.....................................................30-32
There needs to be significant changes, starting
with the competition moving back to winter
to align itself with soccer at other levels,
including juniors.
The “clear air” argument is done and dusted
given the current poor ratings and crowds.
And a more sensible TV deal is needed, so
people can actually watch the games.
Libraries bigger than our differences
to a progressive agenda that they didn’t identify
with and felt was incompatible with their
cultural traditions.
The reality is that Cumberland and Parramatta
are complex communities. As different
demographics move in and out, they are
ever-evolving. That is what makes them so interesting.
There are established residents and
newer migrants, people from both faith and
secular traditions. Families exist in all shapes
and sizes. All this reflects the full nuance and
texture of life in Australia today.
Nevertheless, the choice to live in a liberal
democracy comes with certain safeguards.
And so, the NSW government has advised
that Cumberland Council is in breach of state
guidelines upholding freedom of access to information,
as the material in question has not
been banned at a state or federal level.
Freedom of expression isn’t unfettered. For
example, nobody would support the spread
of books promulgating violence. However, the
decision of Cumberland Council to ban this
book risks sending a message that is the very
opposite of its wider responsibilities.
Public libraries belong to everyone. They
have to remain open, welcoming and inclusive
spaces. People of all backgrounds deserve
access to books, resources and knowledge that
support their learning and personal growth.
This is the universal reason we have libraries
– in Cumberland and Parramatta as well as
Marrickville and Newtown. The idea of the library
has to be bigger than any differences we
may have.
Parra Road’s “new identity”
New 125 place childcare facility and 96 new apartments proposed for Granville
ELLIE BUSBY
More apartments and a childcare
centre could soon be on the way to
one of Sydney’s busiest roads, if the
plans are given the seal of approval.
Plans for a six-storey mixed-use development
comprising of 96 new apartments, hotel
accommodation and a 125 place childcare
facility have just been lodged with City of
Parramatta Council.
If approved the building would sit at 99
Parramatta Road in Granville, just down from
the Rosehill Hotel.
According to the Statement of Environmental
Effects, the high-quality design, increased
housing density and additional commercial
floor space of the proposal will “strongly
contribute” towards revitalising the area.
“The development proposes to undertake
the construction of a contemporary six-storey
mixed-use building that will provide land uses
compatible with the surrounding locality and
serve the needs of people, living, working or
visiting Granville and the wider area,” it said.
“The proposal contributes towards the new
identity and character of the Parramatta Road
in terms of the diversity of building height,
public domain improvements, human scale,
mix of uses and providing more homes close
to transport.”
Under the plans, commercial tenancies will
The six-storey building is proposed for 99 Parramatta Road, Granville.
stretch out across the ground floor as well as
levels one and two.
Apartments would be divided into 67 studio
and 24 one-bedroom apartments, with five
two-bedroom apartment-style hotel rooms
also to be included across the six-storeys.
An administration and lobby area, amenities,
gym and conference room are planned
for the ground floor. Two basement level will
provide a total of 84 car park spaces.
The childcare centre will be distributed over
the ground floor and levels three, four and
five, with open space play areas facing both
Paramatta Road and Carlotta Lane.
An air quality report was also undertaken
to determine if the development’s proximity
to transport utilities and nearby industrial
premises would impact on the health of children
attending the childcare centre.
“The concentration of airborne pollutants
is typically worse at ground levels with air
quality improving the higher you go,” the
An artist’s impression of the proposed mixed-use development.
document said.
“The proposed outdoor play areas are
located on the third, fourth and fifth levels,
away from Parramatta Road. Therefore, the
site is considered suitable for the proposed
childcare centre.”
The centre’s proposed operating hours are
7.00am to 6.00pm, Monday to Friday.
LOCAL NEWS
Funding welcome but more
needs to be done, says advocates
ELLIE BUSBY
“It’s not enough”: As domestic violence
offences increase across the state,
Parramatta-based advocates are continuing
to push for more to be done to protect
women.
Fresh off the back of a series of horrific
domestic violence related cases across the
state, the NSW Government has announced
it will commit $230 million over four years
to reduce the rate of violence against women
and children.
And although local domestic violence advocates
see the commitment as a “good first
step”, many are calling for more programs
and funds to protect women.
“There’s a lot of work that needs to be
done in this space and we all welcome the
announcement from the Minns Government,”
Parramatta Women’s Shelter Executive
Officer, Client Services, Tania Smith told
Parra News.
“We need the resources there’s no doubt, but
it doesn’t cover the funds that are desperately
needed for shelters and refuges.
“What we also need, really urgently, is
additional transitional housing for women
and children to be housed safely after they
exit a shelter, because without the continuity
of care and housing stability you risk women
The NSW Government will commit $230 million over four years to reduce the rate of DV.
and children returning to the perpetrator.”
Smith said she’s definitely noticed an
increase in locals seeking support this year at
the Parramatta Women’s Shelter, compared to
previous years.
“We are always busy, we are always, unfortunately,
having to turn women and children
away every day,” she said.
“We’ve noticed an increase in those we
haven’t been able to assist over the past year
and I think a lot of that has to do with the
housing crisis that we’re in at the moment as
well.”
As part of the commitment, Premier Chris
Minns has also promised $45 million towards
improving bail laws and justice system
responses to domestic violence, with measures
to be announced in coming weeks.
It follows the recent death of Molly Ticehurst,
who was allegedly murdered by her
ex-boyfriend when he was on bail.
Last week, a 39-year-old woman was allegedly
stabbed in a domestic related incident
at a gym in Alexandria by a man. The woman
had taken out an apprehended violence order
(AVO) against the accused.
Smith said it’s incredibly important that
tougher bail laws are introduced and that
AVOs are taken more seriously to prevent
further women from being attacked or killed.
“I would really like to see a focus on breaches
of AVOs being treated more seriously by
police and perpetrators coming under the full
penalties of breaching AVOs,” she said.
“People really need to stand up and take this
seriously through the justice system.”
On May 23, residents are encouraged to
attend a vigil at 5.30pm at Centenary Square.
Hosted by the Parramatta Cumberland
Domestic Violence Prevention Committee,
the vigil seeks to raise awareness about
domestic and family violence, and to honour
the lives that have been lost.
LOCAL NEWS
Determined to give back
“Showing gratitude”: Guildford local gives up time on his birthday to donate blood
ELLIE BUSBY
While most people
celebrate their birthdays
by receiving
gifts, Guildford local Asif Ali
Bangash has spent his 34th
birthday giving something
special back to the community
– his blood.
As an asylum seeker, Bangash
said his donation to the Lifeblood
centre in Parramatta is his
way of helping others, despite
the challenging circumstances
he faces.
Bangash first arrived in
Australia as a stateless man at
22-years-old in 2012 and has
been living here without visa
and work rights since then.
Born in Parachinar, a region
of Pakistan that protrudes into
Afghanistan, Bangash was
forced to flee his homeland at a
young age.
Bangash has not seen his
parents since then.
Tragically, they passed away
during his time in Australia. He
was unable to return home to
say goodbye.
Asif Ali Bangash at the Parramatta Lifeblood centre last week.
Despite these hardships,
Bangash said he chooses to
focus on the positive impacts he
can make.
“Donating blood might seem
small to others, but for me it’s a
big part of how I can contribute
to the country that has given me
shelter,” he said.
“It’s my way of showing gratitude,
of being part of a community
that I’ve grown to love: even
though I am not far from where
I started.”
Bangash’s donation also
comes at a time when Lifeblood
are appealing for more people to
donate blood in the wake of the
recent Bondi stabbings.
“Asif’s decision to donate blood
on his birthday is inspiring,”
advocate Jane Salmon, who
joined him at the blood drive,
said.
“It reminds us that we all have
something to contribute, no
matter how constrained our
circumstances.
“Asif Ali is more than a survivor
– he is a beacon of stoicism
and altruism. As he struggles
to live in Australia, awaiting
the overdue resolution of his
visa status, his volunteering
serves as a powerful reminder
of our shared humanity and the
impact one person can make.”
Following his donation,
Bangash shared his one birthday
wish: that more people
consider donating blood.
“This donation is not just
blood; it’s a lifeline from one
human to another, it is hope for
someone undergoing a health
crisis,” he added.
“I celebrate my birthday as
an asylum seeker living in
Australia for the past 12 years
without the rights many take
for granted, but I have found
comfort and strength in the act
of giving back.”
“Today, on my birthday, I have
chosen to donate unity.”
To find how to donate blood go
to www.lifeblood.com.au
Lifeblood Australia is encouraging more to donate
blood.
A dose of laughter and joy
helping sick kids feel better
ELLIE BUSBY
In the busy halls of the
Children’s Hospital at
Westmead, one colourful
figure is proving that sometimes
laughter really is the best medicine.
With his red nose and vibrant
clothing, Andy McDonell isn’t
a regular doctor – he’s a clown
doctor called Dr Toot.
And instead of medication
and appointments, McDonell
is injecting a dose of happiness
everywhere he goes.
“It’s quite beautiful work to be
able to do, you feel very privileged
to go to very vulnerable
places with people,” McDonell
told Parra News.
“Children are children when
they get the opportunity to play.”
Created by the Humour
Foundation, the Clown Doctors
are a national program which
provides highly trained,
professional “medical clowns”
to help uplift sick kids by delivering
doses of laughter and joy
throughout hospitals.
McDonell, who has been a
clown doctor now for six years,
said they take laughter where its
most needed.
“Yesterday, a mum was thanking
me because I’ve seen her
child since he was a couple years
old going through chemo,” he
added.
“You ring a bell when you finish
the treatment, and he was about
to ring the bell, and she was so
emotional about the small part
that we’ve played.
“She was so thankful because
it was the thing that they needed
as well, to be able to just have a
laugh.”
From April 29 to May 24, Smile
Month, created by the Commonwealth
Bank, will mark a month
of fundraising to support the
Clown Doctors.
As part of the initiative, all
fundraising efforts up to the
Clown Doctors help uplift sick kids by delivering doses of laughter at
hospitals across Australia.
value of $100,000 will be matched
by the CommBank Staff Foundation,
meaning the impact of the
community’s generosity will be
doubled.
Emma Pollard, CEO of The
Humour Foundation, praised
the bank’s 25 year-strong
commitment to the community
through the Clown Doctors.
“CommBank’s support has
been critical to the growth and
impact of the Clown Doctors
program,” she said.
“Over the 25 years of our partnership,
they have supported
more than 8,000 Clown Doctor
Rounds in hospitals all around
Australia, putting smiles on the
faces of over 950,000 children,
carers, and staff in hospitals
around Australia.”
This year’s Smile Month fundraiser
will help support the 65
clown doctors across Australia
bringing hope and joy to sick
children, carers and staff in
hospitals around Australia.
Donations to the Clown
Doctors can be made at any
CommBank branch until May
24, or online at www.commbank.
You’ll feel restless this week and the
danger is you’ll go overboard and throw
the baby out with the bathwater. Uranus
imbues you with a sense of urgency, but
self-discipline and gradual modifications
are what’s required at the moment.
It’s also important to strive to get the
balance right between your personal
and professional lives. Be inspired by
birthday great, actress Cate Blanchett,
“I live my life parallel with my work, and
they are both equally important.”
Pliable Pisceans can sometimes be
too passive and indulge in too much
procrastination. With Saturn transiting
through your sign, you’re currently
facing some challenges, but that’s no
excuse to give up. This week Saturn links
up with Venus, which encourages you to
accept responsibility for where your life
is going – and make some sensible, strategic
changes. As writer (and birthday
great) Nora Ephron wrote, “Above all, be
the heroine of your life, not the victim.”
The week starts off with Mercury and
Mars both transiting through Aries, so
try to be clear and proactive in the way
you communicate with others. A financial
matter needs to be sorted as the Sun,
Venus, Jupiter, Uranus and then Mercury
move through your $$$ zone. Friday
looks tricky though, as friction develops
between you and a friend or colleague,
possibly involving money. The weekend
is wonderful for exciting beginnings and
sudden adventures.
Most Bulls like life to hum along
smoothly with no adjustments required
and no jolting surprises. This week,
prepare for some big ch, ch, ch, changes
and modifications as the Sun, Venus,
Jupiter and Uranus all link up in your
sign. Inspiration for the week comes
from journalist, novelist, screenwriter,
film director (and birthday great) Nora
Ephron, “Don’t be frightened: you can
always change your mind. I know – I’ve
had four careers and three husbands.”
This week make sure your restless
mood and short attention span don’t
lead to reckless behaviour and a loose
tongue. Slow down and think twice
before you tell tall tales or spread secrets
and salacious gossip. Passing on unverified
hear-say could lead to unexpected
consequences with an angry relative, a
cranky colleague, or a frustrated friend.
You’ll find a tablespoon of tact, a dollop
of discretion, and a pinch of patience will
get you through.
The planets encourage you to put more
energy into pursuing your dreams.
No side-stepping Crabs! It’s time to
set ambitious goals – and then pursue
them with plenty of creativity and drive.
But Mercury and Pluto could increase
tension in a relationship within your
peer group. Your intuition is switched on
big time, as you tune into those around
you and uncover some important information.
But don’t let a controlling person
lead you astray.
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
This week the Sun (your power planet),
Venus, Jupiter and Uranus all activate
your career zone. So charm, confidence
and plenty of chutzpah will take you far
along the road to professional success.
And the positive Venus/Saturn link (on
Monday and Tuesday) is particularly
good for business plans, long-term
relationships and socialising with work
colleagues. But avoid being a cranky
Cat on Friday, when the Mercury/Pluto
square boosts your stubborn side.
Venus, Jupiter, Uranus and the Sun are
connecting in (and shaking up) your
aspirations and adventure zone. So
don’t be too conscientious and virtuous
Virgo! It’s time to take some calculated
risks, colour outside the lines and jump
outside the squares. Your motto is from
writer (and birthday great) Nora Ephron,
“Whatever you choose, however many
roads you travel … I hope you will find
some way to break the rules and make a
little trouble out there.”
The Venus/Saturn link (on Monday and
Tuesday) is good for matters involving
work, health and pets. But the major
astrological focus is on joint finances,
business and/or work, as the planets
provide the extra power and passion
needed to boost your professional
profile or fast-track your finances. Keep
it real Libra! You’re keen to splash some
cash around, but make sure your bank
balance is in a healthy state before you
start spending up big.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
This week relationships are unpredictable
and family dramas will keep you on
your toes. Maybe it’s time to simplify your
life, cull some of your commitments or
give a fair-weather friend the flick? Look
for creative, unconventional solutions
that suit you and please others. Some
strategic compromise may be necessary!
As Voltaire (a fellow Scorpio) wrote, “I
may disagree with what you have to say,
but I’ll defend to the death your right to
say it.”
The Sun, Venus, Jupiter, Uranus and
Saturn are revving up your daily routine
zone. So a work matter, a health issue
or a family ‘situation’ could cause some
sleepless nights. The planets are pushing
you to dig deep, accept extra responsibilities
and take on challenges with plenty
of Sagittarian aplomb. A domestic drama
also needs to be handled in a sensitive
and sensible way, as you do your best to
sort things out. Clear communication is
the secret to success.
The positive Venus/Saturn link (on
Monday and Tuesday) is good news for
financial plans, business matters and
long-term relationships. When it comes
to a child, teenager or close friend you’re
on a mission to correct their mistakes
and change their behaviour. But you’ll
get a lot further if you criticise less and
encourage a lot more. And the greatest
realisation this week is that you really
can’t change anyone. They can only
initiate transformation themselves.
ESCAPE THE DAILY GRIND
Located just down from Spice Alley,
Four Points by Sheraton Sydney,
Central Park, sits smack-dab in the
middle of foodie heaven.
With the weather getting colder and the
Christmas break refresh having officially
worn off, a Sydney staycation might just be the
best remedy to cure a mid-year slump.
And if you’re searching for a luxe hotel that
has some of the best restaurants on its doorsteps,
you really can’t go pass Four Points by
Sheraton Sydney, Central Park.
Located in Chippendale, I recently had the
chance to try out the hotel for myself.
Just a short walk down from Central Station
and with onsite parking, Four Points by Sheraton
is perfect for those travelling from the
west by either car or public transport.
After checking in, I checked out my room
for the night, a one-bedroom executive suite.
Modern and chic, the room boasts a huge
bathroom with a rainforest shower and a
separate living room and bedroom – perfect
for those traveling as a couple who still want
to have their own space.
Close to Allianz stadium and the Moore Park
Entertainment Quarter, and surrounded by
many restaurants and shops, there’s plenty to
see and do around Four Points by Sheraton in
Central Park for both families and adults.
At the top of my list of places to explore in
Chippendale was, of course, Spice Alley.
Barely a five-minute walk from the hotel,
Kensington Street serves as a gateway to one
of the most vibrant food hubs in the whole of
Sydney.
Follow the delicious aroma of spices and
you’ll find yourself in an alleyway full of every
single Asian street cuisine you can imagine,
surrounded by beautiful lanterns.
“FOUR POINTS BY SHERATON
IS THE PERFECT GETAWAY FOR
THOSE IN NEED OF AN ESCAPE
FROM THE DAILY GRIND”
With so many amazing dishes on offer, it was
difficult to decide on what to order. Eventually
I settled on a few bao buns from newcomer
Cheeky Bao.
Jam-packed full of flavourful fillings in
a soft, melt-in-your-mouth bao bun, it was
definitely a great choice and the perfect way
to kickstart my weekend getaway.
Gin Lane was next – a unique small bar
that has gained Instagram fame thanks to
the amazing way its cocktails are served-up.
Case in point was the Lightbulb Moment gin
cocktail I ordered, which was literally served
in a smoking lightbulb.
Yes, it was immediately shared on social
media – when a drink looks this good, it’s
impossible not to.
After lunch I spent the afternoon exploring
the rest of what Chippendale has to offer,
including the many shops and cafés. I found
some great gems like the busy Koi Dessert Bar,
a dessert-lovers dream, and the much-loved
Anita Gelato.
One of the best things about having Four
Points by Sheraton as your base is that it’s only
a short trip to pretty much everywhere else
in the city. For me, it presented the perfect
opportunity to try out Infinity at Sydney
Tower for dinner – without having to worry
about getting back to western Sydney after a
few glasses of wine.
Towering 81 levels above Sydney, when you
visit Infinity you quite literally dine amongst
the clouds. Despite getting some bad luck
with the weather during the day, at night the
sky cleared up and I was able to take in all the
beautiful lights of the city, including some
fireworks over the harbour.
When it comes to customer service, the team
at Infinity do it like no other. That paired with
an amazing three-course meal (inclusive
of one of the tastiest desserts I’ve ever had)
created a unique culinary experience like no
other.
Then it was back to the hotel to relax and
finish off the night with a movie in the
spacious living room.
The next morning I woke up feeling refreshed
after a good night’s sleep – something that
doesn’t often happen when I stay at a hotel, a
Cheeky Bao in Spice Alley serves up some
delicious bao buns.
The rooms at Four Points by Sheraton Sydney, Central Park are modern and spacious.
testament to the comfortable (and very big)
bed.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a successful hotel
stay without sampling the breakfast buffet
before checking out. It had all the staples of
a cooked breakfast (think bacon, eggs and
toast), plus plenty of pastries, cereal and
healthy options as well.
I finished off my stay with a visit to Top
Impression Bakery in Central Park Mall for
a takeaway coffee and one of the delicious
croissants I had heard so much about – definitely
one to add to the list if you love pastries
as much as I do.
My stay at Four Points by Sheraton introduced
me to a side of Sydney I’ve never spent
much time in or knew much about – but now
it’s become somewhere I can’t wait to return.
With its prime position and relaxing,
modern rooms, Four Points by Sheraton is the
perfect getaway for those in need of an escape
from the daily grind.
Four Points by Sheraton Sydney facilitated
part of the writer’s stay.
There’s plenty to see and do in Chippendale.
ENTERTAINMENT
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
BACK TO THE
GOOD OLD DAYS!
CASSIDY PEARCE
If you were around in the ‘60s, and even
if you weren’t, chances are you’ve heard
of Little Pattie.
Little Pattie, otherwise known as
Patricia Thompson, fondly nicknamed
for her petite stature, came onto the music
scene in November 1963 when she was just
14-years-old with the double A-sided ‘He’s My
Blonde Headed, Stompie Wompie, Real Gone
Surfer Boy’ / ‘Stompin’ at Maroubra’.
The single blew up immediately – even
though she didn’t necessarily want it to.
“I have to say, I was quite an unwilling
performer. Being a performer was not on
my dream list. All I wanted to do was finish
school, go to university, and study medicine –
that was my dream,” she said.
“But, singing became my occupation quite
accidentally because I won a talent quest, and
it all happened from there.”
According to Thompson, she then took it
upon herself to overcome her shyness and
learn to be a performer, resulting in an overwhelmingly
fulfilling career which has seen
her receive a Medal of the Order of Australia,
and be inducted into the Australian Recording
Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame.
Now, she spends much of her time teaching
music, and absolutely adores it.
“I’m thrilled with the way my life has turned
out, and I’m still enjoying a career that I could
only have dreamed about had I been that kind
of kid,” she said.
“I’m very fortunate, I still enjoy my work very
much.”
Though she admits it has resulted in a few
interesting interactions with parents and
grandparents.
“I like to be ‘Patricia their teacher’, but
invariably they find out that there’s a bit more
than that, and they tell their parents and their
grandparents,” she said.
“It’s all very positive stuff. I’m proud of my
students, and they become proud of me too,
so it works both ways.”
However, Thompson is still actively
performing, both solo and, in her new show,
with other stars from the ‘60s.
Alongside Digger Revell, Jade Hurley, Dinah
Lee and Lucky Starr, Thompson is currently
on tour with The Good Old Days of Rock ‘N’
Roll, which sees these pioneers of the Australian
rock ’n’ roll era join together in concert for
the first time in 60 years.
“I particularly enjoy the show I’m involved
with at the moment, because it’s with my old
mates,” she said.
“We like each other, and like performing
together, and even though we’ve known each
other for a long time, we don’t get together to
do shows very often as a team, so this is absolutely
wonderful.”
In the show, each performer sings their own
biggest hits, as well as coming together for fan
favourites.
“It’s a quick moving feast,” she said.
“The whole show seems to go quickly,
because we’re on, off, on, off, costume
changes. It’s good fun!”
Thompson said she can’t wait for Penrith
fans to see the show when it visits Panthers
World of Entertainment next month.
“Particularly for those people grew up in the
‘60s and ‘70s, I promise them they’ll have a
great time,” she said.
“We’ll relive some memories for them, and
they’ll be reliving their own memories I hope.”
The Good Old Days of Rock ‘N’ Roll will be
on at Panthers Penrith on Sunday, June 2 at
2pm. For more information or to book, visit
Dyer drops new music
Golden Guitar nominated Female Artist of
the Year Melanie Dyer (pictured above) has
released a new single, ‘Had to be There’.
The track made its national debut on
‘Sunrise’ and received a resoundingly positive
response to its live performance at CMC
Rocks.
The single is the follow up to her latest hit,
‘Honeymoonin’, which impacted the ‘Top 5’
on the CountryTown National Airplay Chart.
“This is a song that captures the nostalgia
and magic of a moment that when you try to
explain it to someone, words can’t do it right
… they just Had To Be There,” Dyer said.
“We debuted this at CMC Rocks with the
band and the crowd were whistling and
singing along from the second it started. I
think it’s going to be a festival favourite and
it’s now definitely one of our favourites to
play live. I wrote HTBT in Nashville last year
with my long-time collaborators and friends
Phil Barton and Karen Kosowski who also
produced the track.”
The track is now available on all the usual
streaming services.
Swift, Lawrence join forces
Award-winning Andrew Swift and Amber
Lawrence join forces on ‘Fumes and Fireworks’.
After both won the Golden Guitar for Male
and Female in the same year, a collaboration
seemed inevitable. The song, which is
penned by Swift, Lawrence and Melanie
Dyer, was produced by Matt Fell.
“I have always believed that you need
to find motivation in the smallest of wins
when chasing a dream, and I feel like we’ve
captured that in this song. Sometimes the
work that needs to be done can have you
questioning everything, but when you have
highlights that remind you why you do it,
those are the fireworks,” Swift said.
Lawrence said: “‘Fumes and Fireworks’
is a real life account of our lives in the
music business right now – chasing the big
moments and enjoying the ride along the
way!”
It’s out now on streaming services.
TV NEWS
Ê The wait is almost over! The new season
of the award-winning ‘Colin From Accounts’
will premiere on Binge and Foxtel
on Thursday, May 30 at 8.30pm. Joining
Patrick Brammall (Gordon) and Harriet Dyer
(Ash) for season two are Celeste Barber as
Katie, Virginia Gay as Rumi, Justin Rosniak as
Alistair, Lynne Porteous as Dawn, and John
Howard as Brian. In season two, Ash and
Gordon are now living together and trying to
get their beloved, special needs dog, Colin,
back from his new owners. It’s the first in a
series of hurdles for the new couple, as they
find out more about each other, for better
and worse.
Ê The new season of ‘Britain’s Got Talent’
will premiere on Channel Seven on Thursday,
May 19 at 8.30pm.
Ê The new season of Channel Nine’s ‘The
Summit’ premiered on Sunday. Hosted by
actor Jai Courtney, this season sees familiar
faces alongside everyday Australians.
They include former NRL star Mat Rogers,
actresses Olympia Valance and Simmone
Jade Mackinnon, and ex-Bardot vocalist
Tiffani Wood. With their backpacks containing
an equal share of $1 million, the group
MAY 23 7.30PM TASKMASTER AUSTRALIA, CHANNEL 10
must reach the peak of a distant mountain in
New Zealand in just 15 days to win the cash
they’re carrying.
his loyal sidekick Tom Cashman, both ready
to test the wiles, wit and wisdom of five new
comedians.
MAY 30
8.30PM
COLIN FROM ACCOUNTS, BINGE
Ê Exciting news if you never got to watch
‘NCIS: Sydney’ on Paramount+, with 10 set to
air the show starting this Wednesday, May 15
at 8.40pm.
Ê Still on ‘NCIS’, and it’s Hawaiian version
has been axed after three seasons. ‘NCIS: Hawaii’
was still quite popular in the US, averaging
10 million viewers per week, however
that wasn’t enough to save the series which
will now wrap up in the coming weeks.
Ê The new season of the surprise hit
‘Taskmaster Australia’ is returning to 10
on Thursday, May 23 at 7.30pm. Returning
to their hosting thrones for season two, is
tough-love Taskmaster Tom Gleeson, and
Ê If you’re after love or perhaps some
instant fame, producers are on the hunt for
participants for the next season of ‘Married
at First Sight’ on Channel Nine. For more
information and to apply, visit eu.castitreach.
com/ag/esgau/marriedatfirstsight12/welcome.html.
Ê If you loved ‘The Good Wife’ and the
quirky lawyer Elsbeth Tascioni, don’t miss
the new spin-off focused on the sensational
character. ‘Elsbeth’ is now streaming on
Paramount+. We started a little behind the
American run, but it now appears episodes
are dropping weekly. Unlike ‘The Good
Fight’, this spin-off has a very similar feel to
its original show.
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
REVIEW
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

2 hours, 25 minutes
Some movies are deserving of big
screen status, and ‘Kingdom of the
Planet of the Apes’ is one of those
movies.
The latest film in the hugely successful
‘Apes’ franchise is directed by
Wes Ball of ‘Maze Runner’ fame and
is set about 300 years after the conclusion
of 2017’s ‘War for the Planet
of the Apes’.
If you’re not familiar with the
‘Apes’ franchise or haven’t seen the
previous trilogy from last decade,
it’s highly recommended you fire up
Disney+ this weekend and smash
them all out before seeing this one.
Now, back to the movie.
In ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the
Apes’, many apes societies have
grown from when the Moses-like
Caesar brought his people to an
oasis, while humans have been reduced
to a feral-like existence.
Some ape groups have never heard
of Caesar, while others have contorted
his teaching to build burgeoning
empires.
In this setting, one ape leader begins
to enslave other groups to find
human technology, while another
ape Noa, who watched his clan be
taken, embarks on a journey to find
freedom.
A young human woman named
Mae, played by ‘The Witcher’ actress
Freya Allan, becomes key to Noa’s
quest, although she has big plans of
her own.
This film has just about everything
you want in an epic blockbuster, and
it delivers in spades in my opinion.
From the incredible scenery to
the world-class CGI technology and
gripping storyline that fills you with
an array of emotions from start to
finish, ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the
Apes’ was worth the wait for fans of
the franchise and will be one of the
most talked about movies of 2024.
I’m expecting big things at the international
Box Office as well, and
don’t be surprised if it’s nominated
for a few technical gongs come
awards season. If you thought the
‘Apes’ franchise was over for good...
it’s only just getting started!
Pearson to lead the Blues
Parramatta halfback gets shot at Origin redemption ahead of three-match series
TROY DODDS
Parramatta’s Rachael
Pearson has been
handed the halfback
jumper to lead New South
Wales around the park in this
Thursday’s Women’s State
of Origin opener at Suncorp
Stadium.
It is a huge show of faith in
the Eels number seven, who
was named in the Blues team
last year but then dropped for
game two for teenage sensational
Jesse Southwell.
Southwell was widely tipped
to retain the halfback spot for
this year’s series but Pearson
has been given first crack.
Eight NRLW clubs are represented
in the Blues team this
year with the Sydney Roosters
having the most with six
players.
Seasoned campaigners
Kezie Apps (11 games for
NSW) and Isabelle Kelly (10)
will again lead the team as
co-captains, while the experienced
Corban Baxter returns
as five-eighth.
The NSW team for Origin I. Photo: NRL Photos.
Former Jillaroos Ruan Sims and
Sam Bremner have been named
as Hilder’s assistant coaches.
NSW will aim to reclaim the
Origin Shield Queensland won
on aggregate points in 2023 after
the two-game series finished 1-1.
This year, a three-game series
has been scheduled so there will
be a clear winner.
The series opener will be played
this Thursday night at Suncorp
Stadium as a curtain raiser to
Magic Round. The game is live on
Channel Nine and Fox League.
Game two will be played in
Newcastle on Thursday, June 6
and game three in Townsville on
Thursday, June 27.
Rachael Pearson with her family.
Parramatta City’s path to 50 years
NATHAN TAYLOR
By their own admission, it’s
been a rollercoaster half
century for the Parramatta
City Football Club, but they probably
wouldn’t have it any other way.
Tough times build character
and Parramatta City FC has well
and truly been through it all since
forming in 1974 under the name
Parramatta Hellas.
The club entered the Granville &
District Soccer Football Association
in 1975 with five teams, while their
equipment and original brown and
yellow uniforms were donated by
the Bankstown Crest Soccer Club.
The club’s first home ground
was an ex-garbage tip in North
Parramatta and their original headquarters
was situated underneath
the old Parramatta Greek Orthodox
Church in Hassall Street.
As the years went on the club
continued to grow, and they even
played out of Granville Park in
Merrylands for a period of time
while Parramatta Council undertook
some important ground
upgrades at Barton Park.
In the 1980s, now playing out of
another former garbage tip in Eric
Primrose Reserve, the club began to
Parramatta City FC’s original brown and yellow kit.
prosper. It changed its playing strip
to blue and white to reflect its Greek
roots and entered the NSW State
League competition in 1982.
Following various government
grants for new facilities, the club got
stronger and stronger.
In the mid ‘90s, player numbers
exceeded 300 and the club’s trophy
cabinet was filling up – crowned
Granville & Districts Soccer Football
Association champion club on
four occasions.
While they’ve undergone
several name changes in 50 years
– Parramatta Hellas, Western
District Hellas Sporting Club and
Parramatta City Sporting Club –
they are prouder than ever to don
the Parramatta City Football Club
emblem on their chest today.
In recent years, things have been
tough for Parramatta City FC with
the club on the verge of collapse due
to the impacts of the pandemic.
However, thanks to the hard
work of the current and previous
committee, Parramatta City is the
sleeping giant about to be woken up.
“We were down to just two teams
last season but we’ve now soared
to 12 and we are only going to grow
Parramatta City FC held a reunion last September, which was visited by MP Andrew Charlton.
even further at our new home
ground, Old Saleyards Reserve in
North Parramatta, which is about
100m from where we originally
played at 50 years ago,” President
Angelo Aronis told Parra News.
“The club was very close to folding
a couple of years ago. Luckily
Old Saleyards became available
through the hard work of Council.
We’re now up to a dozen teams – U6s
to U14s and there’s five senior teams
including an Over 55s.
“Our goal is to have as many junior
teams as possible next year. We are
heading in the right direction.”
To celebrate half a century of
Parramatta City FC, the club will
hold a ‘Blue Ball’ this September
at the St Ioannis Greek Orthodox
Church in George Street,
Parramatta.
“There will be a lot of dignitaries
in attendance and hopefully a lot of
ex-players and committee members
from the past 50 years as well,”
Aronis said.
“We are very proud of our rich
history and we’re determined to
keep the club alive. We want to leave
the club in a healthy position financially
to protect its future forever.”
