Nigeria gears up for local Automobile Manufacturing 

The Minister of Industry, Trade 

and Investment, Doris Uzoka- 

Anite, recently announced 

that Nigeria is gearing up to 

start manufacturing cars within the 

country by the end of 2024. This is a 

big step towards growing Nigeria’s 

automotive industry, as currently, 

less than 10% of the vehicles used in 

the country are produced locally. 

Last year, Nigeria’s vehicle 

assembling industry faced a tough 

time, with production costs rising 

and demand for locally assembled 

cars dropping. The activities of motor 

vehicles and miscellaneous assembly 

fell below the benchmark, showing a 

decline in the industry. 

In a bid to boost the automobile 

industry and contribute more 

to the nation’s economy, the 

Federal Government is calling

on all stakeholders, including 

manufacturers, dealers, regulatory 

bodies, and others in the automobile 

ecosystem, to support the Nigerian 

Automotive Development Policy. The 

Minister emphasized the importance 

of collaboration among all parties 

to overcome challenges, improve 

processes, and drive innovation. 

The Minister’s message is clear - 

it’s time for everyone involved in 

the automobile industry in Nigeria 

to come together and make local 

car manufacturing a reality. With 

the right support and cooperation, 

Nigeria can achieve its goal of 

producing made-in-Nigeria cars by 

the end of 2024. 

Chinese Car Manufacturer LDV expands to South Africa 

Chinese Car Manufacturer, 

LDV formerly Leyland DAF 

Vans, has made its move into 

South Africa’s Automotive 

Scene, setting up its headquarters in 

Sandton, Gauteng. 

The company is in the process 

of appointing a national dealer 

network and have already completed 

construction on the first LDV 

dealership in Sandton. Additionally, 

the company is finalizing an 

agreement for a national parts 

distribution warehouse. 

LDV, originally born in the United 

Kingdom in 1896, has gone through 

many changes over the years. In 

1987, it became Leyland DAF Vans 

and eventually rebranded as LDV. 

This brand is well-known globally 

among vehicle enthusiasts.

LDV South Africa will kick off with 

a lineup of T60 double cab bakkies. 

They have completed local testing 

and will offer a five-year/200,000km 

factory warranty and a fiveyear/100,000 

km service plan as 

standard for their SUVs, vans, and 

bakkies. 

LDV South Africa plans to launch its 

first range of bakkies in May 2024 

and will provide more details on 

their full vehicle range soon. Exciting 

times ahead for LDV enthusiasts in 

South Africa!

President William Ruto opens Japanese Car Auction Firm 

in Naivasha 

President William Ruto recently 

inaugurated a new Japanese 

car auction firm at the 

Naivasha Special Economic 

Zone (SEZ). This move is expected 

to lower the costs of importing used 

vehicles from Asia, particularly Japan. 

The firm, known as ‘Jumbo 

Africa Auto Auction SEZ Limited’, 

specializes in pre-owned vehicles 

from Japan, which is currently the 

largest source of imported used 

vehicles in Kenya. Buyers in Kenya, 

East Africa, and the entire African 

continent will now have access to 

a wide range of vehicles, including 

cars, trucks, motorcycles, speciality 

vehicles, machinery, mechanical 

appliances, vehicle parts, work trucks, 

and handling equipment at reduced 

prices.

Kenyan shilling as a trading 

currency and participate in auctions 

from the comfort of their homes. 

Competitive bidding will ensure 

lower prices, leading to increased 

savings compared to traditional car 

importation processes. 

The competitive pricing and high 

demand for vehicles are expected 

to boost the country’s auto parts 

industry and overall activity in 

the automotive sector. This will 

contribute to the expansion of the 

economy and the adoption of new 

technologies. 

President Ruto highlighted the 

significance of the Special Economic 

Zone (SEZ) programme in attracting 

private investment and driving 

economic growth in Kenya. The 

programme aims to increase 

employment, grow exports, enhance 

supply chain spill-overs, and boost 

foreign exchange earnings. 

Honda shifts gear with local car production plant in Ghana 

Honda Manufacturing Ghana 

(HMG) recently celebrated 

a big achievement by 

commencing car production 

plant in Tema, Ghana. This is only 

the second car production plant of 

its kind in Africa, with the first one 

being in Nigeria. Honda is showing 

its dedication to the growing 

automotive market in the region. 

The plant is starting with the ability 

to make 500 cars each year. They will 

be using SKD (Semi-Knocked Down) 

assembly, which means they will put 

together cars using parts that are 

imported in kits. The first car they 

are making is the HR-V small SUV, 

and production began in December 

2023. 

Honda sees West Africa as a 

place with a lot of potential for 

growth. Since then, Honda has 

been investing heavily in building

and distributors to strengthen 

their supply chain in West Africa. 

They have also been focusing on 

understanding the unique needs 

and preferences of consumers in the 

region to tailor their products and 

marketing strategies accordingly. 

By establishing a strong foothold 

in West Africa, Honda is not only 

tapping into a growing market but 

also contributing to the economic 

development of the region through 

job creation and supporting local 

businesses. With their commitment 

to sustainable practices and

Morocco launches first car battery industrial zone 

Morocco has announced the 

creation of the very first 

industrial zone dedicated 

to making batteries for 

electric cars. This is a huge step 

forward for the country’s automotive 

industry. 

The industrial zone covers a 

whopping 283 hectares of land and 

is expected to bring in around 4,000 

new jobs. Companies like Chinese 

firm CNGR and Moroccan-based 

African private investment fund Al 

Mada are already investing a total of 

$2.3 billion into the project. 

Located near the OCP Group 

Industrial Park, this new zone will 

not only focus on making electric 

vehicle batteries but will also 

support other industries like mining, 

mechanical, electrical, electronics,

This new industrial zone is a 

big deal for Morocco. It shows 

their dedication to sustainable 

transportation technologies and 

their commitment to growing 

their electric vehicle industry. With 

international collaborations and a 

focus on local economic growth, this 

project is set to benefit both the 

country and its people. 

Nissan to launch e-Power Hybrid technology car in Tunisia 

Nissan is set to introduce its 

e-Power hybrid technology 

car to Tunisia. This is a 

strategic move to test the 

demand for the electric vehicles 

(EVs) in the African market. Africa 

is seen as the last frontier for the 

e-Power Hybrid vehicle because 

many people in Africa do not own 

cars. In fact, the average number of 

vehicles per 1,000 people in Africa is 

much lower compared to the global 

average. 

While EVs are becoming more 

popular in other parts of the world, 

they are still too expensive for many 

people in Africa. Some countries in 

Africa, like South Africa, also face 

challenges such as power outages 

and transportation issues that make 

it hard for companies to invest in EVs 

on the continent.

that they have a plan to introduce 

electrification in Africa using their 

e-Power technology. This system 

includes a petrol engine, power 

generator, inverter, battery, and 

electric motor. The electric motor 

powers the wheels using energy 

stored in the battery pack. 

South Africa has made some 

progress in supporting the 

transition to EVs by publishing an 

EV policy roadmap with government 

incentives. Nissan, which has been 

in Africa for over 60 years, owns 

manufacturing plants in Egypt and 

South Africa. They plan to export 

pickup trucks built in South Africa to 

new markets in Algeria, Libya, Sudan, 

Tunisia, and Egypt.

Simba Corporation unveils new Ashok Leyland ECOMET Truck model 

Simba Corporation, a big player 

in Kenya’s car industry, has 

just revealed the new Ashok 

Leyland ECOMET Truck model. 

This is part of their plan to become 

a top player in the light-duty trucks 

market. 

The unveiling of the new truck 

happened at the opening of a new 

dealership in Thika Town called 

Swanley Motors. This move helps 

Simba Corporation to compete in the 

seven to 10-tonne trucks category, 

which had 1,378 units sold in 2023. 

So far this year, Simba Corporation 

has sold 165 units, putting them in 

third place behind Isuzu and CFAO 

Motors. 

The Group managing director of 

the motors division, Naresh Leekha, 

sees these launches as a big step 

for the company’s growth in the 

Mount Kenya, Eastern, and Rift 

Valley regions. The Ashok Leyland 

ECOMET model fills a gap in their 

product range and positions Simba 

Corporation as a top transport 

solutions provider in Kenya. 

The ECOMET truck is priced at Sh4.5 

million and can be turned into a 29 

or 33-seater bus. This allows Simba 

Corporation to tap into the public 

and mass transport markets. The 

company aims to capture a 

bigger market share by offering 

solutions beyond just trucks, 

like hardware, mattresses, and 

water tanks. 

The Chief Commercial Officer, 

Mohamed Varvany, mentioned 

that they will offer financing 

options and a year warranty 

or 500,000 kilometers for the 

ECOMET Truck. This makes it easier 

for customers to get support from 

their financing partners. The current 

economy makes customers want 

affordable trucks that perform well. 

Simba Corporation is targeting 

corporate and public service 

transport, agribusiness, construction, 

and education transport sectors with 

the new Thika dealership. This will 

also help boost sales of other Simba 

Corporation brands.

KVM secures US$3 million in funding for electric buses expansion 

Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers 

(KVM) has received a huge 

boost in funding from CFAO 

Group, a major player in the 

mobility industry. The $3 million 

investment will help KVM expand 

their assembly and distribution of 

electric buses in Kenya and Rwanda. 

The goal is to introduce more 

electric buses into the East African 

market, starting with 19 buses in 

Nairobi and aiming for 1000 buses 

within three years. 

The funding from CFAO Group is 

split between CFAO Kenya and 

Mobility54, CFAO’s corporate venture 

capital arm. BasiGo, a Kenyan startup 

working with KVM, is thrilled to have 

CFAO on board. BasiGo’s CEO, Jit 

Bhattacharya, expressed gratitude for 

the partnership, highlighting CFAO’s 

recognition of the potential for 

electric mobility in Africa.

significant investment from Silicon 

Valley venture capitalists to support 

their electric bus assembly and 

charging infrastructure. With over 

500 reservations from bus operators 

in Nairobi and 100 reservations 

from Kigali, BasiGo is on track for 

expansion. The company plans to 

offer a wider range of commercial 

electric vehicles and introduce a 

Pay-As-You-Drive financing model. 

CFAO is leading the way 

in promoting sustainable 

transportation in Africa. They have 

opened their first electric vehicle 

dealership in Rwanda and invested 

in e-mobility start-ups through 

Mobility54. This initiative aims to 

create a green mobility ecosystem 

across 40 African countries. 

The popularity of electric vehicles 

(EVs) is on the rise in Africa. Data 

from the Energy and Petroleum 

Regulatory Authority (EPRA) shows a 

significant increase in the number of 

electric vehicles and motorcycles in 

Kenya. This trend not only provides 

cost-effective transportation but also 

helps reduce carbon emissions and 

combat climate change. 

Overall, the rise of electric vehicles 

in Africa represents a significant step 

towards a more sustainable future 

for the continent. With continued 

investment in clean energy 

technologies and transportation 

infrastructure, Africa has the 

potential to become a global leader 

in the transition to low-carbon 

transportation.

IAMaga and TecAlliance Launch Event: 

Driving Digitization in the Africa IAM 

through Partnership and Collaboration

On 20th February this 

year, IAMaga and 

TecAlliance launched 

their collaborative event 

aimed at continually supporting their 

member community to grow their 

business in the aftermarket parts 

industry in Africa digitally. 

The community members are 

expected to participate and support 

this initiative of digitizing the 

automotive aftermarket business in 

Africa for the benefit of all as well as 

the suppliers. During the conference 

meeting, emerging challenges were 

identified and the best possible 

solutions discussed. 

The main digital gap identified in the 

aftermarket parts space in East Africa 

is the car PARC, technical expertise 

and how to use the TecAlliance 

TecDoc data system. 

Car PARC Data 

Car parc is the details on the total 

number of vehicles on the road 

at a particular moment or at a 

geographical area in time, taking 

into account their specific models 

and part replacements. The data may 

as well include how many vehicles 

get scrapped over the years due to 

accidents, old age, lack of parts, etc. 

“The formal operational vehicle parc 

data is missing in the TecAlliance 

TecDoc program. The vehicles 

themselves are known to TecAlliance 

because they are produced to 

the global level, and they source 

this information directly from the 

manufacturers. However, a lot of the 

vehicles in East Africa are imported 

as used vehicles and processes to 

formally record them as vehicles 

that are operating in East Africa is 

the current market gap that we are 

finding ways to bridge,” say Martin 

Hendriksen – IAMaga CEO. 

Martin further explains that, 

“TecAlliance know the vehicle, but 

they don’t know the vehicle is here. 

So, the idea is to work together with 

the member community to see how 

we can flag the vehicles that are 

currently active in the East Africa 

region, so that when the members 

and the customers use the TecDoc 

service, will find that the vehicles are 

properly represented, and they can 

find the parts in the TecDoc system 

whereby the suppliers that are on 

the TecDoc system will make the 

parts available for the members to

find them. This way, we can help with 

the data processing and improve the 

level of data in the TecDoc system.” 

“What we are lacking from most 

countries in Africa at this point and 

time is the credible vehicle parc data. 

We have no clue what vehicles are 

flagged to which countries and when. 

We have got the basic idea of the 

exportation and importation of the 

vehicles, we just don’t know which 

countries in Africa they are available,” 

adds James Shaw – TecAlliance 

Catalog Manager. 

According to James Brown – 

TecAlliance Sales Manager, in 

the quest to digitizing the Africa 

Automotive Aftermarket, the 

technical expertise is lacking, as 

well as how to use the TecAlliance 

TecDoc data in the required format. 

“The other concern is the brands that 

are using our service. Africa being 

an emerging market, we find a lot of 

brands are not on TecDoc and these 

are the Chinese brands or private 

labels, nonetheless, we do see major 

potential in growing this network in 

the future,” says Brown.

Counterfeiting 

“Into counterfeiting, we have found a 

service provider of the very best hitech 

AI driven labelling technology 

available. They create a label which 

is the same to your fingerprint, each 

label is as unique as each of our 

fingerprints and each box gets a 

fingerprint. The idea is that, anyone 

through the distribution chain that 

needs to authenticate if that product 

is a fake or not, scans the label and 

gets into the digital ecosystem. If 

the product is a fake, that has a 

copied scan, you won’t be able to 

authenticate and the system will see 

that someone scanned a fake label 

and at this point the counterfeiters 

can be traced and apprehended,” 

emphasised Hendriksen. 

Other forms of Mobility 

“Increasingly our members around 

the world are starting to involve 

themselves in the EV business 

and hydrogen as well when it 

becomes more prevalent. But this 

is only in markets where we have 

lots of EV vehicles being sold. So 

we start to see in Europe where 

our members are being involved, 

we see in North America more of 

our members are being involved, 

but obviously in Africa without 

exception, there is minimal 

EV business currently in place. 

However, when the EV business 

grows in Africa, our members will 

subsequently be involved and 

from IAMaga perspective we will 

support our members, connect them 

to the correct suppliers and help 

them animate that business,” says 

Hendriksen. 

According to him, the community is 

not anticipating even in the mature

“It will have a place, but we also 

believe that the lobby for EVs as the 

only energy source in Automotive is 

misguided. Hydrogen is also going 

to potentially have a place. We also 

think that alternative fuels such as 

biofuels for example will and should 

have a role to play. In Brazil for 

example, biofuels constitute the 80% 

of the fuels used in the Brazilian 

market, therefore, there is no reason 

why biofuel can’t be produced 

anywhere in the world, so it has to 

have a place in respect to more fuels 

that are used in mobility,” he adds. 

At TecAlliance, James Brown confirms 

listing of some of the EVs in TecDoc 

and not so many hydrogen powered 

vehicles yet. “We don’t foresee 

electric vehicles coming to Africa 

soon. However, should the current 

environment change, of course we 

will be geared up for when that time 

does come,” adds Brown.

aftermarket businesses in Africa,” – 

Martin Hendriksen. 

“The event launch was a strategic 

initiative specifically targeted for 

the Africa automotive Aftermarket 

where we need to focus more on 

the Africa potential. The IAMaga- 

TecAlliance partnership has been 

a success beyond our expectations. 

We have gained significant 

insights from our members, and it’s 

evident that thorough discussions 

are essential for charting our 

next steps. This involves closely 

monitoring the progress of vehicle 

data development and leveraging 

support from our services to propel 

the digitization of the African 

Automotive Aftermarket. Our recent 

meetings with members were highly 

productive, with a shared enthusiasm 

for collaboration. They’re eager 

to engage in initiatives such as 

acquiring bulk data, including from 

local government authorities, and 

aiding in the development of the 

local carparc data tailored for the 

Kenyan market,” – James Brown. 

“East Africa is an important location 

for us and in fact the annual IAMaga 

summit will most likely be held in 

Kigali this year, it could potentially 

be Kenya next year,” – Martin

tank. “They accept backhands, 

siphon off fuel and sell it on. The 

syndicates, in turn, often sell it on 

to other trucking companies who 

may be competing and now have the 

‘advantage’ of a cheaper fuel,” adds 

Bailey. It's important to be aware 

of the common methods used for 

fuel theft so that you can effectively

Pump manipulation 

One of the most prevalent methods 

of fuel theft is pump manipulation. 

This involves tampering with 

the fuel dispenser to bypass the 

metering system, allowing thieves to 

pump fuel without it being recorded.

fueling stations, such as employees 

or contractors. “Thieves may 

manipulate fuel gauges to make it 

appear as though less fuel has been 

consumed than actually has. This 

allows them to siphon fuel without

Thieves may resort to drilling holes 

in fuel tanks, where they puncture 

the fuel tank to siphon off the fuel. 

This technique is commonly used 

when thieves have physical access

is a very last resort and normally 

with organized crime gangs that 

are tasked with obtaining a certain 

amount of fuel per night.” 

Counterfeit credit cards 

Counterfeit credit cards are also a 

common tool used by fuel thieves. 

These cards are programmed to 

bypass security measures and allow 

unauthorized individuals to pump 

fuel without paying. This method is 

particularly challenging to detect as 

it can closely resemble a legitimate 

transaction. 

Siphoning 

One of the most prevalent methods 

of fuel theft is siphoning. Thieves 

use hoses or similar devices to 

extract fuel from vehicles, storage 

tanks, or equipment. This method is 

relatively easy to execute, making 

it a popular choice for criminals. 

“This is the most common methos 

of fuel theft from a truck tank, 

using nothing more than a standard 

hosepipe. Often, just small amounts, 

perhaps only 20ltrs is stolen on a 

regular basis. Such theft is often 

undetectable from a tank of, say, 

500ltrs and may not even be picked 

up by electronic sensors. Small 

amounts can be siphoned into a 

standard fuel can and easily hidden 

or moved. Done daily, an operator 

can be losing 150ltrs/week or 7,000 

ltrs a year,” explained Fowler. 

“Siphoning may be an internal or 

external problem. Of course, in an 

unprotected tank, thieves may steal 

far larger amounts, though storage 

and movement of big volumes 

becomes more difficult and the theft 

is more obvious,” adds Fowler. 

Fuel lines/Sender Unit 

“On some trucks the sender/ 

gauge unit on the fuel tank may be 

exposed and vulnerable to be turned 

and lifted enough for a siphoning 

tube to be inserted. When inserted 

it may reach to the bottom of the 

tank to enable large amounts of 

fuel theft”, as Fowler explains. “The 

simplest protection, which still 

allows fleet mechanics to access 

the sender unit when required, is to 

install a SenderStop, being a secure 

box which covers the gauge unit. It 

may be secured by extensions which

adhesives and metal security seals 

as used on container doors. 

Theft from removing or severing 

the fuel lines is possible, but not 

common. Severing fuel lines is messy 

and is a “once only” theft, whereas a 

thief prefers to make regular thefts 

of small amounts,” suggests Fowler. 

Drainplug 

Fuel theft through drainplug is 

a challenging and risky method 

used by thieves to illegally obtain 

fuel. It not only requires technical 

knowledge but also poses a high 

risk as it can result in a large pool 

of fuel being spilled. “Being at the 

base of the fuel tank, this is a very 

difficult method because once the 

plug is taken out the fuel will escape 

causing a significant amount of fuel 

loss through spillage,” says Fowler.

difficult but also dangerous, as any 

spark or heat source near the leaked 

fuel can cause a fire that can cause 

even more losses/damages such as 

lives and properties.

fuel cards or bowsers to fill up other

“Thieves may tamper with fuel caps
