Nigeria gears up for local Automobile Manufacturing<br />

The Minister of Industry, Trade<br />

and Investment, Doris Uzoka-<br />

Anite, recently announced<br />

that Nigeria is gearing up to<br />

start manufacturing cars within the<br />

country by the end of <strong>2024</strong>. This is a<br />

big step towards growing Nigeria’s<br />

automotive industry, as currently,<br />

less than 10% of the vehicles used in<br />

the country are produced locally.<br />

Last year, Nigeria’s vehicle<br />

assembling industry faced a tough<br />

time, with production costs rising<br />

and demand for locally assembled<br />

cars dropping. The activities of motor<br />

vehicles and miscellaneous assembly<br />

fell below the benchmark, showing a<br />

decline in the industry.<br />

In a bid to boost the automobile<br />

industry and contribute more<br />

to the nation’s economy, the<br />

Federal Government is calling<br />

on all stakeholders, including<br />

manufacturers, dealers, regulatory<br />

bodies, and others in the automobile<br />

ecosystem, to support the Nigerian<br />

<strong>Automotive</strong> Development Policy. The<br />

Minister emphasized the importance<br />

of collaboration among all parties<br />

to overcome challenges, improve<br />

processes, and drive innovation.<br />

The Minister’s message is clear -<br />

it’s time for everyone involved in<br />

the automobile industry in Nigeria<br />

to come together and make local<br />

car manufacturing a reality. With<br />

the right support and cooperation,<br />

Nigeria can achieve its goal of<br />

producing made-in-Nigeria cars by<br />

the end of <strong>2024</strong>.<br />

Chinese Car Manufacturer LDV expands to South <strong>Africa</strong><br />

Chinese Car Manufacturer,<br />

LDV formerly Leyland DAF<br />

Vans, has made its move into<br />

South <strong>Africa</strong>’s <strong>Automotive</strong><br />

Scene, setting up its headquarters in<br />

Sandton, Gauteng.<br />

The company is in the process<br />

of appointing a national dealer<br />

network and have already completed<br />

construction on the first LDV<br />

dealership in Sandton. Additionally,<br />

the company is finalizing an<br />

agreement for a national parts<br />

distribution warehouse.<br />

LDV, originally born in the United<br />

Kingdom in 1896, has gone through<br />

many changes over the years. In<br />

1987, it became Leyland DAF Vans<br />

and eventually rebranded as LDV.<br />

This brand is well-known globally<br />

among vehicle enthusiasts.<br />

LDV South <strong>Africa</strong> will kick off with<br />

a lineup of T60 double cab bakkies.<br />

They have completed local testing<br />

and will offer a five-year/200,000km<br />

factory warranty and a fiveyear/100,000<br />

km service plan as<br />

standard for their SUVs, vans, and<br />

bakkies.<br />

LDV South <strong>Africa</strong> plans to launch its<br />

first range of bakkies in May <strong>2024</strong><br />

and will provide more details on<br />

their full vehicle range soon. Exciting<br />

times ahead for LDV enthusiasts in<br />

South <strong>Africa</strong>!<br />

President William Ruto opens Japanese Car Auction Firm<br />

in Naivasha<br />

President William Ruto recently<br />

inaugurated a new Japanese<br />

car auction firm at the<br />

Naivasha Special Economic<br />

Zone (SEZ). This move is expected<br />

to lower the costs of importing used<br />

vehicles from Asia, particularly Japan.<br />

The firm, known as ‘Jumbo<br />

<strong>Africa</strong> Auto Auction SEZ Limited’,<br />

specializes in pre-owned vehicles<br />

from Japan, which is currently the<br />

largest source of imported used<br />

vehicles in Kenya. Buyers in Kenya,<br />

East <strong>Africa</strong>, and the entire <strong>Africa</strong>n<br />

continent will now have access to<br />

a wide range of vehicles, including<br />

cars, trucks, motorcycles, speciality<br />

vehicles, machinery, mechanical<br />

appliances, vehicle parts, work trucks,<br />

and handling equipment at reduced<br />

prices.<br />

Kenyan shilling as a trading<br />

currency and participate in auctions<br />

from the comfort of their homes.<br />

Competitive bidding will ensure<br />

lower prices, leading to increased<br />

savings compared to traditional car<br />

importation processes.<br />

The competitive pricing and high<br />

demand for vehicles are expected<br />

to boost the country’s auto parts<br />

industry and overall activity in<br />

the automotive sector. This will<br />

contribute to the expansion of the<br />

economy and the adoption of new<br />

technologies.<br />

President Ruto highlighted the<br />

significance of the Special Economic<br />

Zone (SEZ) programme in attracting<br />

private investment and driving<br />

economic growth in Kenya. The<br />

programme aims to increase<br />

employment, grow exports, enhance<br />

supply chain spill-overs, and boost<br />

foreign exchange earnings.<br />

Honda shifts gear with local car production plant in Ghana<br />

Honda Manufacturing Ghana<br />

(HMG) recently celebrated<br />

a big achievement by<br />

commencing car production<br />

plant in Tema, Ghana. This is only<br />

the second car production plant of<br />

its kind in <strong>Africa</strong>, with the first one<br />

being in Nigeria. Honda is showing<br />

its dedication to the growing<br />

automotive market in the region.<br />

The plant is starting with the ability<br />

to make 500 cars each year. They will<br />

be using SKD (Semi-Knocked Down)<br />

assembly, which means they will put<br />

together cars using parts that are<br />

imported in kits. The first car they<br />

are making is the HR-V small SUV,<br />

and production began in December<br />

2023.<br />

Honda sees West <strong>Africa</strong> as a<br />

place with a lot of potential for<br />

in West <strong>Africa</strong>, Honda is not only<br />

tapping into a growing market but<br />

also contributing to the economic<br />

Morocco launches first car battery industrial zone<br />

Morocco has announced the<br />

creation of the very first<br />

industrial zone dedicated<br />

to making batteries for<br />

electric cars. This is a huge step<br />

forward for the country’s automotive<br />

industry.<br />

The industrial zone covers a<br />

whopping 283 hectares of land and<br />

is expected to bring in around 4,000<br />

new jobs. Companies like Chinese<br />

firm CNGR and Moroccan-based<br />

<strong>Africa</strong>n private investment fund Al<br />

Mada are already investing a total of<br />

$2.3 billion into the project.<br />

Located near the OCP Group<br />

Industrial Park, this new zone will<br />

not only focus on making electric<br />

vehicle batteries but will also<br />

support other industries like mining,<br />

mechanical, electrical, electronics,<br />

This new industrial zone is a<br />

big deal for Morocco. It shows<br />

their dedication to sustainable<br />

transportation technologies and<br />

their commitment to growing<br />

their electric vehicle industry. With<br />

international collaborations and a<br />

focus on local economic growth, this<br />

project is set to benefit both the<br />

country and its people.<br />

Nissan to launch e-Power Hybrid technology car in Tunisia<br />

Nissan is set to introduce its<br />

e-Power hybrid technology<br />

car to Tunisia. This is a<br />

strategic move to test the<br />

demand for the electric vehicles<br />

(EVs) in the <strong>Africa</strong>n market. <strong>Africa</strong><br />

is seen as the last frontier for the<br />

e-Power Hybrid vehicle because<br />

many people in <strong>Africa</strong> do not own<br />

cars. In fact, the average number of<br />

vehicles per 1,000 people in <strong>Africa</strong> is<br />

much lower compared to the global<br />

average.<br />

While EVs are becoming more<br />

popular in other parts of the world,<br />

they are still too expensive for many<br />

people in <strong>Africa</strong>. Some countries in<br />

<strong>Africa</strong>, like South <strong>Africa</strong>, also face<br />

challenges such as power outages<br />

and transportation <strong>issue</strong>s that make<br />

it hard for companies to invest in EVs<br />

on the continent.<br />

that they have a plan to introduce<br />

electrification in <strong>Africa</strong> using their<br />

e-Power technology. This system<br />

includes a petrol engine, power<br />

generator, inverter, battery, and<br />

electric motor. The electric motor<br />

powers the wheels using energy<br />

stored in the battery pack.<br />

South <strong>Africa</strong> has made some<br />

progress in supporting the<br />

transition to EVs by publishing an<br />

EV policy roadmap with government<br />

incentives. Nissan, which has been<br />

in <strong>Africa</strong> for over 60 years, owns<br />

manufacturing plants in Egypt and<br />

South <strong>Africa</strong>. They plan to export<br />

pickup trucks built in South <strong>Africa</strong> to<br />

new markets in Algeria, Libya, Sudan,<br />

Tunisia, and Egypt.<br />

Simba Corporation unveils new Ashok Leyland ECOMET Truck model<br />

Simba Corporation, a big player<br />

in Kenya’s car industry, has<br />

just revealed the new Ashok<br />

Leyland ECOMET Truck model.<br />

This is part of their plan to become<br />

a top player in the light-duty trucks<br />

market.<br />

The unveiling of the new truck<br />

happened at the opening of a new<br />

dealership in Thika Town called<br />

Swanley Motors. This move helps<br />

Simba Corporation to compete in the<br />

seven to 10-tonne trucks category,<br />

which had 1,378 units sold in 2023.<br />

So far this year, Simba Corporation<br />

has sold 165 units, putting them in<br />

third place behind Isuzu and CFAO<br />

Motors.<br />

The Group managing director of<br />

the motors division, Naresh Leekha,<br />

sees these launches as a big step<br />

for the company’s growth in the<br />

Mount Kenya, Eastern, and Rift<br />

Valley regions. The Ashok Leyland<br />

ECOMET model fills a gap in their<br />

product range and positions Simba<br />

Corporation as a top transport<br />

solutions provider in Kenya.<br />

The ECOMET truck is priced at Sh4.5<br />

million and can be turned into a 29<br />

or 33-seater bus. This allows Simba<br />

Corporation to tap into the public<br />

and mass transport markets. The<br />

company aims to capture a<br />

bigger market share by offering<br />

solutions beyond just trucks,<br />

like hardware, mattresses, and<br />

water tanks.<br />

The Chief Commercial Officer,<br />

Mohamed Varvany, mentioned<br />

that they will offer financing<br />

options and a year warranty<br />

or 500,000 kilometers for the<br />

ECOMET Truck. This makes it easier<br />

for customers to get support from<br />

their financing partners. The current<br />

economy makes customers want<br />

affordable trucks that perform well.<br />

Simba Corporation is targeting<br />

corporate and public service<br />

transport, agribusiness, construction,<br />

and education transport sectors with<br />

the new Thika dealership. This will<br />

also help boost sales of other Simba<br />

Corporation brands.<br />

KVM secures US$3 million in funding for electric buses expansion<br />

Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers<br />

(KVM) has received a huge<br />

boost in funding from CFAO<br />

Group, a major player in the<br />

mobility industry. The $3 million<br />

investment will help KVM expand<br />

their assembly and distribution of<br />

electric buses in Kenya and Rwanda.<br />

The goal is to introduce more<br />

electric buses into the East <strong>Africa</strong>n<br />

market, starting with 19 buses in<br />

Nairobi and aiming for 1000 buses<br />

within three years.<br />

The funding from CFAO Group is<br />

split between CFAO Kenya and<br />

Mobility54, CFAO’s corporate venture<br />

capital arm. BasiGo, a Kenyan startup<br />

working with KVM, is thrilled to have<br />

CFAO on board. BasiGo’s CEO, Jit<br />

Bhattacharya, expressed gratitude for<br />

the partnership, highlighting CFAO’s<br />

recognition of the potential for<br />

electric mobility in <strong>Africa</strong>.<br />

significant investment from Silicon<br />

Valley venture capitalists to support<br />

their electric bus assembly and<br />

charging infrastructure. With over<br />

500 reservations from bus operators<br />

in Nairobi and 100 reservations<br />

from Kigali, BasiGo is on track for<br />

expansion. The company plans to<br />

offer a wider range of commercial<br />

electric vehicles and introduce a<br />

Pay-As-You-Drive financing model.<br />

CFAO is leading the way<br />

in promoting sustainable<br />

transportation in <strong>Africa</strong>. They have<br />

opened their first electric vehicle<br />

dealership in Rwanda and invested<br />

in e-mobility start-ups through<br />

Mobility54. This initiative aims to<br />

create a green mobility ecosystem<br />

across 40 <strong>Africa</strong>n countries.<br />

The popularity of electric vehicles<br />

(EVs) is on the rise in <strong>Africa</strong>. Data<br />

from the Energy and Petroleum<br />

Regulatory Authority (EPRA) shows a<br />

significant increase in the number of<br />

electric vehicles and motorcycles in<br />

Kenya. This trend not only provides<br />

cost-effective transportation but also<br />

helps reduce carbon emissions and<br />

combat climate change.<br />

Overall, the rise of electric vehicles<br />

in <strong>Africa</strong> represents a significant step<br />

towards a more sustainable future<br />

for the continent. With continued<br />

investment in clean energy<br />

technologies and transportation<br />

infrastructure, <strong>Africa</strong> has the<br />

potential to become a global leader<br />

in the transition to low-carbon<br />

Driving Digitization in the <strong>Africa</strong> IAM<br />

through Partnership and Collaboration<br />

On 20th February this<br />

year, IAMaga and<br />

TecAlliance launched<br />

their collaborative event<br />

aimed at continually supporting their<br />

member community to grow their<br />

business in the aftermarket parts<br />

industry in <strong>Africa</strong> <strong>digital</strong>ly.<br />

The community members are<br />

expected to participate and support<br />

this initiative of digitizing the<br />

automotive aftermarket business in<br />

<strong>Africa</strong> for the benefit of all as well as<br />

the suppliers. During the conference<br />

meeting, emerging challenges were<br />

identified and the best possible<br />

solutions discussed.<br />

The main <strong>digital</strong> gap identified in the<br />

aftermarket parts space in East <strong>Africa</strong><br />

is the car PARC, technical expertise<br />

and how to use the TecAlliance<br />

TecDoc data system.<br />

Car PARC Data<br />

Car parc is the details on the total<br />

number of vehicles on the road<br />

at a particular moment or at a<br />

geographical area in time, taking<br />

into account their specific models<br />

and part replacements. The data may<br />

as well include how many vehicles<br />

get scrapped over the years due to<br />

accidents, old age, lack of parts, etc.<br />

“The formal operational vehicle parc<br />

data is missing in the TecAlliance<br />

TecDoc program. The vehicles<br />

themselves are known to TecAlliance<br />

because they are produced to<br />

the global level, and they source<br />

this information directly from the<br />

manufacturers. However, a lot of the<br />

vehicles in East <strong>Africa</strong> are imported<br />

as used vehicles and processes to<br />

formally record them as vehicles<br />

that are operating in East <strong>Africa</strong> is<br />

the current market gap that we are<br />

finding ways to bridge,” say Martin<br />

Hendriksen – IAMaga CEO.<br />

Martin further explains that,<br />

“TecAlliance know the vehicle, but<br />

they don’t know the vehicle is here.<br />

So, the idea is to work together with<br />

the member community to see how<br />

we can flag the vehicles that are<br />

currently active in the East <strong>Africa</strong><br />

region, so that when the members<br />

and the customers use the TecDoc<br />

service, will find that the vehicles are<br />

properly represented, and they can<br />

find the parts in the TecDoc system<br />

whereby the suppliers that are on<br />

the TecDoc system will make the<br />

parts available for the members to<br />

find them. This way, we can help with<br />

the data processing and improve the<br />

level of data in the TecDoc system.”<br />

“What we are lacking from most<br />

countries in <strong>Africa</strong> at this point and<br />

time is the credible vehicle parc data.<br />

We have no clue what vehicles are<br />

flagged to which countries and when.<br />

We have got the basic idea of the<br />

exportation and importation of the<br />

vehicles, we just don’t know which<br />

countries in <strong>Africa</strong> they are available,”<br />

adds James Shaw – TecAlliance<br />

Catalog Manager.<br />

According to James Brown –<br />

TecAlliance Sales Manager, in<br />

the quest to digitizing the <strong>Africa</strong><br />

<strong>Automotive</strong> Aftermarket, the<br />

technical expertise is lacking, as<br />

well as how to use the TecAlliance<br />

TecDoc data in the required format.<br />

“The other concern is the brands that<br />

are using our service. <strong>Africa</strong> being<br />

an emerging market, we find a lot of<br />

brands are not on TecDoc and these<br />

are the Chinese brands or private<br />

labels, nonetheless, we do see major<br />

potential in growing this network in<br />

the future,” says Brown.<br />

fingerprint. The idea is that, anyone<br />

through the distribution chain that<br />

needs to authenticate if that product<br />

is a fake or not, scans the label and<br />

the product is a fake, that has a<br />

copied scan, you won’t be able to<br />

“Increasingly our members around<br />

the world are starting to involve<br />

is only in markets where we have<br />

lots of EV vehicles being sold. So<br />

we start to see in Europe where<br />

our members are being involved,<br />

we see in North America more of<br />

our members are being involved,<br />

but obviously in <strong>Africa</strong> without<br />

exception, there is minimal<br />

EV business currently in place.<br />

However, when the EV business<br />

grows in <strong>Africa</strong>, our members will<br />

subsequently be involved and<br />

from IAMaga perspective we will<br />

to the correct suppliers and help<br />

biofuels for example will and should<br />

have a role to play. In Brazil for<br />

example, biofuels constitute the 80%<br />

of the fuels used in the Brazilian<br />

market, therefore, there is no reason<br />

why biofuel can’t be produced<br />

anywhere in the world, so it has to<br />

have a place in respect to more fuels<br />

that are used in mobility,” he adds.<br />

their techniques to stay one step<br />

ahead of businesses' prevention<br />

measures. According to Bailey, it<br />

is generally one’s own employees<br />

who close the loop between the<br />

syndicates and the operator’s fuel<br />

tank. “They accept backhands,<br />

siphon off fuel and sell it on. The<br />

syndicates, in turn, often sell it on<br />

to other trucking companies who<br />

may be competing and now have the<br />

‘advantage’ of a cheaper fuel,” adds<br />

Bailey. It's important to be aware<br />

of the common methods used for<br />

fuel theft so that you can effectively<br />

protect your business against them.<br />

Pump manipulation<br />

One of the most prevalent methods<br />

of fuel theft is pump manipulation.<br />

This involves tampering with<br />

the fuel dispenser to bypass the<br />

metering system, allowing thieves to<br />

pump fuel without it being recorded.<br />

This method is often used by<br />

individuals who have access to your<br />

fueling stations, such as employees<br />

or contractors. “Thieves may<br />

manipulate fuel gauges to make it<br />

appear as though less fuel has been<br />

consumed than actually has. This<br />

allows them to siphon fuel without<br />

raising suspicion until it’s too late,”<br />

Gatehi points out.<br />

Tank drilling<br />

Thieves may resort to drilling holes<br />

in fuel tanks, where they puncture<br />

the fuel tank to siphon off the fuel.<br />

This technique is commonly used<br />

when thieves have physical access<br />

to your vehicles or storage tanks.<br />

According to Russell Fowler, CEO<br />

of FuelDefend Global Ltd, “This<br />

is a very last resort and normally<br />

with organized crime gangs that<br />

are tasked with obtaining a certain<br />

amount of fuel per night.”<br />

Counterfeit credit cards<br />

Counterfeit credit cards are also a<br />

common tool used by fuel thieves.<br />

These cards are programmed to<br />

bypass security measures and allow<br />

unauthorized individuals to pump<br />

fuel without paying. This method is<br />

particularly challenging to detect as<br />

it can closely resemble a legitimate<br />

transaction.<br />

Siphoning<br />

One of the most prevalent methods<br />

of fuel theft is siphoning. Thieves<br />

use hoses or similar devices to<br />

extract fuel from vehicles, storage<br />

tanks, or equipment. This method is<br />

relatively easy to execute, making<br />

it a popular choice for criminals.<br />

“This is the most common methos<br />

of fuel theft from a truck tank,<br />

using nothing more than a standard<br />

hosepipe. Often, just small amounts,<br />

perhaps only 20ltrs is stolen on a<br />

regular basis. Such theft is often<br />

undetectable from a tank of, say,<br />

500ltrs and may not even be picked<br />

up by electronic sensors. Small<br />

amounts can be siphoned into a<br />

standard fuel can and easily hidden<br />

or moved. Done daily, an operator<br />

can be losing 150ltrs/week or 7,000<br />

ltrs a year,” explained Fowler.<br />

“Siphoning may be an internal or<br />

external problem. Of course, in an<br />

unprotected tank, thieves may steal<br />

far larger amounts, though storage<br />

and movement of big volumes<br />

becomes more difficult and the theft<br />

is more obvious,” adds Fowler.<br />

“On some trucks the sender/<br />

gauge unit on the fuel tank may be<br />
