Corb Lund - Solo Acoustic
Iconic Canadian Country music Artist, Corb
Lund, performs an Acoustic Solo Performance at
The Bailey Theatre in Trail this November 27 at
7:30 pm.
Hailing from the foothills of Alberta’s Rocky
Mountains singer-songwriter Corb
Lund comes from a rural background,
with a long family lineage of ranchers
and rodeo people. An elusive artist,
he moves seamlessly between the outlaw
country, Western, and indie-folk
realms with an honest curiosity and
rowdy devotion to each.
Raised on the DIY sentiment of “if
you want something done, you gotta do
it yourself ’’, Corb launched his career
recording in his basement, printing his
own t-shirts, booking his own tours,
being his own Manager and publicist…
whatever it took to get it done.
Touring for years with the indie-metal
band, The Smalls, before he turned his
sights to writing Western songs, creating
a rather unique and quirky hybrid
writing style along the way.
With three Gold albums to his
credit, Corb Lund has received multiple
domestic and international award
wins and nominations. In 2022, Lund
won his 14th career Canadian Country
Music Award, the same year he made
his debut at the historic Grand Ole
Opry. His latest album, EL VIEJO, is
highly acclaimed and features all original
songs, with the title song being
a tribute to his longtime friend Ian
Tyson.
So, come spend an intimate evening
with the thinking cowboy’s troubadour.
Get your tickets early because demand is
expected to be high as his shows are selling out
everywhere. Corb Lund is a presentation of the
Kootenay Concert Concert Connection in association
with the Goat and Bridge FM.
May 20
brought to you by
Celebrating
50 Years
of Logger
Sports
TO NEW DENVER
With respect and gratitude we recognize
that all these festivities take part on the
land of the Sinixt, the Ktunaxa and Syilx
peoples upon whose unceded territories
we live, work and play.
May Days has been part of the fabric of this
community since 1892. That is 132 years
sporting three glorious, fun-filled days,
hosted by the Kaslo & Area Chamber of
Commerce.
Saturday is definitely kid-centric entertainment
day at Vimy Park starting at 10 am.
Helicopter rides, a long time favourite, are
back on Saturday as a fundraiser for Kaslo
Search and Rescue. Logger Sports, celebrating
its 50th year, runs Saturday and Sunday,
you will hear the roar of chainsaws and the
crowd as the Logger Sports competitors entertain
and thrill. Watch as Champions are
made in a number of events! Exciting action,
amazing physical feats – a crowd pleaser.
Another annual favourite is the Kaslo Show
‘N Shine Car Show, starting Sunday starting
at 10am. You won’t want to miss these beauties
- after 27 years they just get better! You
will have time to see them before day two of
the the Logger Sports begins. Live entertainment
happens all weekend at the Gazebo in
Vimy Park. Though it is easy to doze on the
green by the Gazebo, please be aware, the annual
Slo-pitch tournament happening and
occasionally a ball leaves the playing field... if
you hear Heads Up tuck & duck!! Vimy Park
will be brimming with craft and food vendors,
all weekend long.
Monday our Kaslo traditions include the
May Days Parade - this years theme is The
70s. On the second pass of the parade follow
it down to Vimy Park to hear the Kootenay
Kiltie Pipe Band perform, followed by our
cherished May Pole Dance, first danced in
1923. This year it will be performed by:
Tess DuFort, Mazie Carlson
Carson Carnegie, Nova Hathaway
Ozzie Hathaway, Katie Lettrari
Isla McCarthy, Tessa Neville
Oakley Gillies, Eva Holden
Kiran Mercy, Sofie Lettrari
Bodan Gillies, Rose Stewart
Gilbert Fraissard, Taylin Remple
Mynna LeBlanc
Teachers: Sarah Burns,
Alecia Neville, Nicole Rhynold,
Dannika Neville
Musicians: Terry Marshall, Tina
McLaren and Christopher Poer
Welcome Home! Whether you’re
new to Kaslo, a longtime local, or
back for a visit over the Victoria Day
long weekend, Kaslo May Days feels
like coming home.
Kootenay Wildfire Art on Display
Eerie wildfire
smoke is just a part
of the Kootenay
summer experience
now as illustrated
by the art currently
hanging on display
on the Nelson
Library gallery wall.
The panels are taken
from the in-progress
graphic novel
by writer-artist
Nathan Wilkinson
and novelist Anne
DeGrace. We Were
Found in the Fires is
about a rookie wildfire fighter who is processing her Doukhobor
past while also encountering old-growth activists, ravers,
homesteaders and other recognizable Kootenay figures on the
job.
colville
509-684-2584
colvillemonument.com
The gallery show will be a sneak peak of the forthcoming
book, displaying a chapter that will be found halfway through,
showing the fire crew as they are tasked with off-grid evacuation
compliance. As the illustrator of the story, Wilkinson found a
way to convey the pervasiveness of the smoke: “All the art is
simple monochrome, except for the yellow smoke that accumulates
over the scenes as the story progresses. This show is an
extract from earlier in the season, when the air is just starting
to cloud over. By the climax, the images will be obscured by a
thick, claustrophobic cover.”
The panel illustrations were created using an iPad and stylus,
giving Wilkinson greater control over the final image. “I always
used to use ink and paper but working digitally gives way more
freedom for resizing parts of a composition, or erasing mistakes
without leaving marks. It’s a huge load off for an artist as
obsessive as me.”
Nowadays summer smoke is part of our collective experience.
Wilkinson and DeGrace are creating stories that reflect
that reality. The exhibition continues until the end of June.
Play it safe around our reservoirs
Play it safe when boating or swimming this summer. Our reservoirs can be enjoyable
recreation destinations, but it’s important to practice common sense safety precautions.
Because the water in our reservoirs is used for flood control and the production of electricity,
reservoir water levels can rise or fall daily. Changing water levels can conceal submerged
hazards, particularly in shallow water near the shoreline. Visitors and reservoir users should be
aware of these potential dangers and take precautions to stay safe.
Boating, fishing, and swimming above or below a dam or generating station can be very
dangerous. For your own safety and the safety of those with you, obey all warning signs and
stay out of restricted areas. Boaters must comply with all Canadian Coast Guard regulations
and practice safe boating at all times.
For more information about BC Hydro’s Columbia basin reservoir operations, visit bchydro.com
or call our toll-free reservoir information line at 1 877 924 2444. You can also sign up to receive
weekly water level forecasts by email by contacting southern-interior.info@bchydro.com.
Music & Landscape Take
the Stage
Music steeped in landscape is on the menu
Vancouver Island, John Gogo and Allen
Dobb, take the stage on Sunday, May 26 at
7:30pm.
a musical family in Snuneymuxw (aka
Nanaimo). He’s best known for writing and
performing folksongs about the people and
places, and the true and the tall tales of the
West Coast—the islands in particular. From
Haida Gwaii to St. John’s, John has played
community halls and
big houses, festivals
pubs, and theatres—
and now Taghum Hall.
Joseph Blake of the Victoria
Times hails Gogo
as “One of the most talented
singer-songwriters
this area has ever
produced.”
Victoria-based singer-songwriter
Allen
Dobb is on tour after
recording his new
album, Alone Together,
a collection of ten new
original songs drawn
from characters, stories,
and landscapes that are
part of his experience
working as a range management
specialist in the
interior of B.C. The vein
of the Fraser River and
BC’s interior landscapes
run through many of his
new songs. Peter North,
reviewer for the Edmonton
Journal, describes
Dobb as “one of the
finest and most literate
tunesmiths in the
country.”
These fine musicians
will play separate sets,
but “we do have two
hearty helpings of ‘Canadiana’
to sing together. I
won’t say exactly what
those are ‘cause it’s a
surprise,” says Gogo
mysteriously. What will
that look like? There is
one sure way to find out.
Tips to Reduce Climate Impact
This Earth Month, Basin residents shared with us the steps
they are taking to be more climate conscious. More than 400
people responded to our questions about energy efficiency,
food waste, cutting out single-use plastics. We’ve collected
some of the top tips from the answers shared with us to
inspire us all!
Improve Energy Efficiency
How are you conserving energy? Residents had lots of
ideas about how to improve efficiency and ultimately reduce
climate impact.
• Wash clothes on cold and hang clothes to dry.
• Turn off lights and unplug appliances.
• Turn down the thermostat or install a thermostat that
turns itself down.
Reduce Food Waste
How are you reducing food waste? Residents’ creativity
came through with so many ideas about turning scraps into
high-impact items for the kitchen or the garden.
• Meal plan and eat leftovers.
• Get creative with food scraps – like turning veggie ends
into vegetable stock, cooking with lesser used produce parts
(like carrot tops, kale stems or potato skins), or regrowing
vegetables
• Compost.
Minimize single-use plastics
How have you shifted your daily activities to rid them of
single-use items? We heard from early champions of reusable
bags and consumers who are careful about single-use
packaging of produce and other purchases.
• Carry reusable bags.
• Use a reusable water bottle, coffee mug and containers
for takeaway.
• Say no to single-use plastics like produce with extensive
plastic packaging.
HEALTHY CHOICES
7. Divide and Transplant
In early spring when they are just
beginning to pop up, divide and
transplant any perennials that have
outgrown their space or grown large
enough to split, if desired. In most
cases, it’s best to divide and move
perennials in the opposite season
of when they bloom. That means
Bloom & Groom
It has been such a cold slow spring, these spring garden chores are still relevent
perennials
in spring,
and spring
blooming
perennials
in fall. This
a v o i d s
disrupting
their bloom
cycle.
Evergreen shrubs can be moved in
early spring before their new growth
appears or in early fall to give them
enough time to re-establish their
roots before winter. Deciduous
shrubs can be moved almost
anytime they are not in bloom and
the weather is mild, but generally
spring and fall are the preferred
seasons for transplanting. If you
move them while they are dormant,
there will be less stress on the
plants and they will be more likely
to spring back into action quickly.
8. Trellises and Stakes.
If you’ve brought a trellis into the
garage or shed for winter, now is
the time to bring it back out into
the garden. Make sure it’s sturdy
and apply a fresh coat of paint if
needed before using it again. If
you grow peonies, delphiniums, or
any other perennials that require
support, set them out now or get
them ready to go. Trying to wrangle
tender peony stems into a peony
ring is tough work once their leaves
have unfurled.
9. Spring containers and annual
borders
Though most annual flowers need
the soil to warm up a bit before
planting, some cool weather loving
plants like pansies, nemesia, and
osteospermum daisies won’t mind
if you plant them in the garden
early. Fill your spring containers
with sweet alyssum, lobelia and
Supertunia petunias, too. You’ll
find six solutions for cool weather
plantings in this article. For most
other annuals, it’s a good idea to
wait until your area’s last frost
date to plant. Your local Extension
Service website lists that date on
their website.
10. Be ready for freezing
temperatures
are in the forecast. If you garden
in an area where late spring frosts
and freezes are a possibility, be
prepared to cover up plants that
have tender emerging buds or
foliage if freezing temps are in
the forecast. If the buds haven’t
begun to open yet, there’s no
need to cover them.Old sheets
and towels that have been
relegated to the rag pile are a
good option, and professional row
cover is available for purchase,
too. DO NOT cover tender plants
with plastic sheeting or tarps.
The effect of the plastic touching
the newly emerging buds and
foliage will magnify the cold’s
effect, rather than mitigate it.
