1 Introduction

The Kodak s1220 Photo Scanning System allows you to make
digitizing photos easy! The Kodak Photo Scanning Software combined
with the Kodak s1220 Scanner allows you to scan photos, remove red
eye, retouch and rotate images, and apply image sharpening if desired.
Once the images are scanned, the images can be used in a variety of
ways; e.g., printed, emailed, written to a CD/DVD, or uploaded to
Kodak Easyshare Gallery or other photo management system for
sharing and printing.
This chapter provides a brief overview of product features, system
requirements, instructions for installing the software, an overview of
what information you will find in other chapters of this User’s Guide and
procedures for logging into and exiting the software.
This User’s Guide provides information on how to use the Kodak s1220
Photo Scanning System.
The User’s Guide for the Kodak i1200/i1300 Series Scanners, A-61560
(included with the Kodak s1200 Photo Scanning System) provides
information and procedures for using the Kodak s1220 Scanner. Refer
to the Kodak i1200/i1300 Series Scanners User’s Guide for any
maintenance and troubleshooting information you need for the scanner.
Periodically, you will have to clean the scanner and change the
separation module. Chapter 5, in the scanner User’s Guide (A-61560)
provides maintenance information.
Product features The Kodak s1220 Photo Scanning System provides the following
features:
• captures both the front and back of photos at the same time or just
fronts or backs
• scans up to 30 (front and back), 4 x 6” photos per minute at 300 dpi
resolution
• handles photos from 2.5 x 3.5” (wallet size) to 8 x 10”
• can use the Kodak A4 Flatbed Accessory to safety scan fragile and
precious photos
• provides a user friendly interface which allows you to scan and
enhance your photos
• allows you to rotate images 90, 180 or 270 degrees
• allows you to remove red eye
• provides a choice of resolutions: 300, 600 or 1200 dpi
• stores JPEG compressed images as .jpg files for printing, emailing or
uploading to a photo management system
• supports the optional flatbed accessory

System requirements Following is the minimum recommended system configuration to run
the Kodak s1220 Photo Scanning System:
• Intel Pentium IV, 3.2 GHz processor, 250 MB free hard disk space, 1
GB RAM for 300 dpi or 3 GB RAM for 600 and 1200 dpi
• Two USB 2.0 ports (1 for the scanner, 1 for the WIBU key)
• Microsoft Windows XP, Service Pack 2; Windows 2000 Professional;
Windows Vista — all supporting USB 2.0 with administrator privileges
for installation
• Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 (included on the installation CD)
NOTE: Depending on how you choose to manage the images after
scanning, you will need supporting devices such as CD/DVD
Writers, photo printers, etc.

Installing the
software
• Install the software before connecting the scanner to the PC.
• Be sure you have administrator rights. The s1220 Photo Scanning
System application must be installed under Administrator and run
under Administrator or Standard groups.
• Close any currently running applications that use a WIBU security
key before starting the s1220 Photo Scanning System installation.
1. Place the s1220 Photo Scanning System installation CD in the
CD-ROM drive. The software installation will automatically start. If
the software does not auto start, access the drive where the
installation and application CD is inserted and browse to the
INSTALLSTW.exe file on the root directory of the CD.
NOTE: If a security software application is installed on the PC, you
will be asked to Allow or Deny the s1220 Photo Scanning
System from installing or running, select Allow or Yes. If
you inadvertently select Deny or No, open the security
software application and set the permission to Allow the
application to install and run.

2. Click Next. The Software Licence screen will be displayed.
3. Read the License Agreement and click Next.
The Select Destination Directory screen will be displayed.
4. Click Next or click Browse if you want to install the software in a
directory other than the default.

The installation will begin.
During the installation, the Browse dialog box will be displayed.
5. If you want to store the scanned images in the default C:/
Scanned_Pictures default directory, click Next. Otherwise, click
Browse to go to the directory where you want to store your scanned
images, or enter a new folder name where you want to store the
images, then click OK. See Chapter 4, “Application configuration”
for information on changing the Scanned Images folder after
installation.

The WIBU-KEY Setup screen will be displayed.
NOTE: Do not install the WIBU key at this time.
6. Click Next.
The Language screen will be displayed.
7. Select the desired language and click Next.

8. Click Next. A message will be displayed asking if you want to create
the folder, click Yes to continue. The following screen will be
displayed.

10.Click Next. The following screen will be displayed.
11. Click Finish.
12.Click OK on the Setup screen when the installation is complete.
When WIBU has been installed, the Installation Complete screen
will be displayed.
13.Insert the WIBU key into the USB port of the PC.

14.Connect the USB cable to the scanner and the PC.
15.If you have an optional Kodak A4 Flatbed, connect the flatbed cable
to scanner.
16.Turn on the scanner.
The PC will recognize the scanner and optional flatbed. Follow any
prompts.
Using this manual This User’s Guide describes the functions and procedures of the Kodak
s1220 Photo Scanning System.
Chapter 2, Getting Started — describes the screens and tools that are
available when using the s1220 Photo Scanning System.
Chapter 3, Using the Software — provides procedures for using the
features and functionality of the s1220 Photo Scanning System.
Chapter 4, Troubleshooting — provides an error code listing, a list of

Programs>Kodak>Document Imaging>s1220 Photo System>
s1220 Photo Scanner. The Customer Information screen will be
displayed.
To exit the software:
• Click the Exit icon in the lower-right hand corner on any screen or
click the Close box in the upper right-hand corner.

2 Getting Started
Customer & Order
Information screen
This chapter describes the screens and icons that are available when
using the Kodak s1220 Photo Scanning System.
All screens within the Kodak s1220 Photo Scanning System provide the
following icons:
About: displays the software version and copyright information.
Exit: closes the Kodak s1220 Photo Scanning System.
A message area is provided on all screens in the title bar.
Messages are displayed in this area
When you launch the s1220 Photo Scanning System application
software, the Customer & Order Information screen will be displayed.
Order # — this number is prefixed with the date and time and is
appended with any text you want to add for your own reference. An
entry must be made in this field. Up to 51 alphanumerical characters
are allowed in this field.

Customer Information — enter the customer name, address and
email address information. You do not need to make an entry in these
fields.
• Up to 64 characters are allowed in the Last, First, Street, and City
fields.
• Up to 20 characters are allowed in the State/County/Country and
Phone fields.
• If you enter an email address, it must be a valid email address
format.
• Up to 10 numeric characters are allowed in the Zip/Post Code field.
Continue — displays the next screen and allows you to proceed to the
next set of scanning options.
Resolution — allows you to select the dots per inch (dpi), which
determines the image quality. The options are: 300, 600 and 1200 dpi.
The default is 300 dpi. In most cases, 300 dpi is sufficient. Selecting
600 dpi or 1200 dpi increases scanning time and image size.
Mode — select one of the following:
• Photo Face Up — captures the picture side facing upward. When
scanning, place the stack of photos in the feeder so the front side is
facing you.
• Photo Face Down — captures the picture side facing downward.
When scanning, place the photo in the feeder facing away from you.
• Two Sided - Photo Face Up — captures both sides of the photo.
Sharpen Image — sharpens the focus and edges of the scanned
image. If this option is selected, all photos within the order (the stack of
photos to be scanned) will be sharpened. This option is turned off, by
default. You should not need to use Sharpen Images when scanning
good quality images.

Scan Images screen When you click Continue on the Customer & Order Information screen,
the Scan Images screen will be displayed.
16-Up Display window — displays up to 16 images at a time.
Previous — goes back to the Customer & Order Information screen.
Start Over — goes back to the Customer & Order Information screen
but clears all information and scanned images on the Scan Images
screen. The confirmation message Do you want to start over? This
will delete all the files that were scanned will be displayed.
Start Scanning — scans photos.
Batch Information — these values will be 0 until a batch has been
scanned.
• Image: displays the number of the first image shown in the 16-Up
Display window.
• To: displays the number of the last image shown in the 16-Up Display
window.
• Of: displays the total number of images scanned in the batch.
Total Images: displays the total number of scanned images.
Moves to the previous set of 16 images.
Moves to the next set of 16 images.

Continue Scan
Images screen
When you click Start Scanning on the Scan Images screen, thumbnail
images will be displayed in the 16-Up Display window as they are being
scanned. After the pictures are displayed you can rotate and retouch
the images.
16-Up Display window — displays up to 16 images at a time.
Rotates the image 90 degrees counter-clockwise (left).
Rotates the image 90 degrees clockwise (right).
Moves to the previous set of 16 images, if any.
Moves to the next set of 16 images, if any.
Continue — displays the Order Preview screen.
Start Over — goes back to the Customer & Order Information screen
and will clear all information and scanned images. The confirmation
message Do you want to start over? This will delete all the files
that were scanned will be displayed.
Continue Scanning — allows you to scan another batch of photos.
Redo Scan Batch — replaces the last batch of scanned images.
Retouch Batch — automatically retouches (e.g., color, contrast,
brightness, etc.) all of the images in a batch. When this option is
selected, an Image Retouch progress bar is displayed at the top of the
screen.

Enhance Picture
screen
Batch Information — these values will be 0 until a batch has been
scanned.
• Image: displays the number of the first image shown in the 16-Up
Display window.
• To: displays the number of the last image shown in the 16-Up Display
window.
• Of: displays the total number of scanned images in the batch.
Total Images: displays the total number of scanned images.
When you click on an image on the Scan Images screen, the image will
be displayed in the Original Picture and Enhanced Picture display
windows.
Original Picture/Enhanced Picture — the selected photo will be
displayed. The Original Picture window displays the image “as-is”.
While you make changes to the displayed image, the changes will be
displayed in the Enhanced Picture window. When you are finished, a
message will be displayed asking if you want to save the changes.
Return — goes back to the Scan Images screen.
Start Over — goes back to the Customer & Order Information screen
but clears all information and scanned images on the Scan Images
screen. The confirmation message Do you want to start over? This
will delete all the files that were scanned will be displayed.

Enhance Picture icons
Deletes the selected image.
Replaces the current image with the new scanned image.
Enhances the colors in the scanned image.
Removes the red eye in the scanned image.
Rotates the image 90 degrees to the left (counter-clockwise).
Rotates the image 90 degrees to the right (clockwise).
Allows you to scroll through the current batch of 16 images.
Allows you to scroll through the current batch of 16 images.

Order Preview screen This screen allows you to preview and modify your photos before
completing this order.
Display window — displays the folder(s) of scanned photos. You can
click on a folder to view the contents.
Moves to the previous set of folders.
Moves to the next set of folders.
Continue — displays the Order Summary and Creation screen.
Start Over — goes back to the Customer & Order Information screen
but clears all information and scanned images on the Scan Images
screen. The confirmation message Do you want to start over? This
will delete all the files that were scanned will be displayed.
This Order — provides a summary of the folders displayed on this
screen.

Preview Details
screen
This screen allows you to preview the photos within a selected folder
and enhance them if necessary.
16-Up Display window — displays up to 16 images from the selected
folder.
Rotates the image 90 degrees counter-clockwise (left).

Moves to the previous set of 16 images.
Moves to the next set of 16 images.
Continue — displays the Order Preview screen.
Start Over — goes back to the Customer & Order Information screen

Retouch Folder— automatically retouches all the photos within the
selected folder.
This Folder — provides a summary of the current images and how
many images are in this folder.

Order Summary &
Creation screen
This screen allows you to finalize your order.
Display window — provides the order number, customer name,
address and email address. It also provides the number of photos
scanned. If desired, you can change the Name, Address and Email
information.
Finalize order — you can either print the order summary or complete
the order.
• Print Order Details — if selected, allows you to print the order
summary. The operating system’s Print dialog box will be displayed.
You may send the order summary to the default printer, or select a
different printer from the list box. After you select Print, the order
summary will be sent to the printer and a message will be displayed
asking if you want to start another scan session.
• Print Order Details — if not selected, start another scan session or
exit the application software.
Previous — displays the Order Preview screen.
Start Over — goes back to the Customer & Order Information screen
allowing you to start a new session but clears all information and
scanned images on the Scan Images screen. The confirmation
message Do you want to start over? This will delete all the files
that were scanned will be displayed.

3 Using the Software
The Kodak s1220 Photo Scanning System allows you to scan and
enhance photographs using a Kodak s1220 Scanner. Once the photos
are scanned, each photo is saved as a .jpg file that can be written to a
CD/DVD or uploaded to the Kodak Easyshare Gallery or other photo
management system for sharing and printing.
Chapter 2 provides an overview of the screens and tools that you will
use with the s1220 Photo Scanning System.
This chapter provides procedures for using the Photo Scanning
System.
Handling guidelines Before scanning a batch of photos, review the following guidelines to
save time and improve efficiency.
• Handle photos with care! Be sure your hands are clean or wear
clean white cotton gloves. Avoid touching the photographic surface.
• Fragile or precious photos should be scanned using the Kodak A4
Flatbed Accessory to eliminate the risk of damage from automated
handling.
• Use the scanner in a clean, dust-free environment.
• Avoid unnecessary bending and flexing of photos.
• Due to copyright laws, any professionally taken photos that are
copyrighted cannot be scanned without written permission from the
owner.
• Two-sided photo scanning:
- If you have a batch of photos where both sides of some photos
need to be scanned, group these photos together and scan them
in a separate batch. This will save time deleting unwanted blank
images.
- If you need to rescan a two-sided photo, always put the side you
want to rescan facing down.
• If you have a batch of photos that need retouching, group these
photos together. When you select Retouch Batch, the application
software retouches the entire batch of photos at the same time.
• When you delete an image in a batch of 16, the first photo in the next
batch of 16 will be placed in the batch of 16 where you deleted the
image. Take the time to review the batch to be sure you do not need
to do any additional enhancing.
• The Sharpen Image option is not necessary for good quality photos.
If you use Sharpen Image, only use it at 300 dpi or processing time
will be increased.

Starting the software
and using the
scanning system
Before you begin, be sure the s1220 Scanner is on and in the Ready
state.
1. Double-click on the Photo Scanning System software icon. The
Customer & Order Information screen will be displayed.
2. Enter up to 51 alphanumeric characters in the Order # field to
identify this order. You must make an entry in this field.
3. If desired, enter the last name, first name, phone, street, city, state/
county/country, zip/post code and email information in the available
fields.
4. Select the desired resolution: 300 dpi, 600 dpi or 1200 dpi.
5. Select the Mode you want to scan: Photo Face Up, Photo Face
Down, or Two Sided - Photo Face Up.
NOTES:
• If you are using an optional Kodak A4 Flatbed, you must select
Photo Face Down or Two Sided - Photo Face Up.
• If you are using the flatbed, be sure there are no photos in the
input tray of the scanner, otherwise the photos that are in the
input tray will be scanned instead of the photo on the flatbed.
Refer to the documentation included with the Kodak A4 Flatbed
Accessory for setup instructions.
6. If you want to use the Sharpen Images option, click the checkbox.
This option is not intended to be used with good quality photos.
NOTE: Only use this option at 300 dpi. Using higher dpi settings
increases processing time.

7. Select Continue. The Scan Images screen will be displayed.
8. Place the first batch of photos in the scanner. The feeder can
accommodate up to 30 photos at a time. Depending on your
selection in Step 5, be sure the side you want to scan is facing
properly.
NOTES:
• For best feeding performance always scan the photos with the
scanner body tilted back to the 25-degree angle and with photos
face up as shown in the illustration below. For more information
see the section entitled “Scanner positions” in the User’s Guide
for the Kodak i1200/i1300 Series Scanners, A-61560.
• The scanner scans photos from the bottom of the stack first.
Therefore, if you want your photos scanned in a specific order,
stack your photos with the first photo being closet to the input
tray.
9. Click Start Scanning. The message, Scanner lamps are
warming, may be displayed. Scanning will start when the lamps are
ready (usually within a few seconds).

As photos are being scanned, the scanned images will be displayed
in the 16-Up Display window.
10.When a batch of photos has been scanned, retouch and/or rotate
the photos as desired. If you do not need to make any changes and
are finished scanning all photos in this order, click Continue.
11. If you want to scan more photos, make enhancements, etc. these
options are available:
• If you want to scan another batch of photos in this order, place
more photos in the feeder and click Continue Scanning. The
photos will be scanned. When you are finished scanning all the
photos in the order, go to Step 12.
• Use the rotate arrows on each displayed image to rotate as
desired. Make any other desired changes then go to Step 12.
• If you want to retouch all of the photos in the scanned batch, click
Retouch Batch. All the images in the batch will be retouched.
Make any other desired changes then go to Step 12.
• If you want to rescan all of the photos in the scanned batch, click
Redo Scan Batch. The 16-Up Display window will be cleared,
and the rescanned photos will be displayed on the screen. Make
any other desired changes then go to Step 12.

• If you want to use any special enhancement features, e.g.,
correct red eye, delete an image, retouch a specific image, etc.),
click on the image you want to enhance. The Enhanced Picture
screen will be displayed. Make any other desired changes then
go to Step 12.
12.When finished making changes and scanning, click Continue. The
following message will be displayed.

13.Click Yes. The Order Preview screen will be displayed.
14.Select the folder that you want to preview and click Continue.
The Preview Details screen will be displayed.
15.From the Preview Details screen you can make any final changes.
When finished, click Continue.

16.If you want to review the contents of the folder one more time before
finishing your order, select the desired folder, otherwise, click
Continue.
The Order Summary & Creation screen will be displayed.
17.Verify that all the information in the order summary is complete and
click Finalize Order.

If you want to print the order summary, check the Print Order
Details check box. When you click Finalize Order, the Print dialog
box will be displayed allowing you to print the order summary.
The following message will be displayed.
18.If you want to start a new scan session, click Yes. Otherwise, click
No to close the Kodak Photo Scanning Software.
Unless you changed the default at installation, scanned images can be
found at C:\Scanned_Pictures. These images can now be handled in
a variety of ways: uploaded to a photo management system, burned to
CD/DVD, printed, emailed, etc. A .xml file will also be created with the
print order summary. The .xml file can be found within the print order
directory.

4 Troubleshooting
Use the Error Code list on the next page as a guide to check possible
solutions to problems you may encounter when using the Kodak s1220
Photo Scanning System.
Installation Issues
• Unless you changed the default at installation, scanned images can
be found at C:\Scanned_Pictures. These images can now be
handled in a variety of ways: uploaded to a photo management
system, burned to CD/DVD, printed, emailed, etc. A .xml file will also
be created with the print order summary. The .xml file can be found
within the print order directory.
• The s1220 Photo Scanning System uses Microsoft .NET Framework
2.0. If .Net Framework 2.0 is not installed on the PC, it will be
installed during installation.
• If a security software application is installed on the PC, you will be
asked to Allow or Deny the s1220 Photo Scanning System from
installing or running, select Allow or Yes. If you inadvertently select
Deny or No, open the security software application and set the
permission to Allow the application to install and run.
• Close any currently running applications that use a WIBU security
key before starting the s1220 Photo Scanning System installation.
• The WIBU key should be plugged into a USB 2.0 port directly on the
PC, not into a USB hub that is then plugged into a PC USB port.
Plugging a USB 2.0 hub into a USB 1.1 port can cause the WIBU
software to not load automatically (see the next issue).
• If after installation of the application and plug-in of the WIBU key, the
WIBU software does not automatically load, a message may be
displayed asking for the WIBU installation disk. Select that you have
the software disk and choose the CD drive with the s1220 Photo
Scanning System installation CD. This will complete the WIBU
software installation.

Application issues
• The Kodak s1220 Photo Scanning System has a fixed screen size of
1024 x 768. You may want to change the taskbar properties by
unselecting "Keep the taskbar on top of other windows." This will
keep the taskbar from covering the lower portion of the application
when the screen resolution is set at 1024 x 768. You can also
alternatively set the display properties to a higher screen resolution
than 1024 x 768, such as 1280 x 960 so the application does not
cover the entire desktop.
• If the scanner encounters E9 Document Jams when scanning at
higher resolutions (600 or 1200 dpi) and the PCs RAM is less than

Application Configuration
• The s1220 Photo Scanning System may be configured by modifying
the PrintScan.ini file in the s1220 Photo Scanning System installation
directory. You can change the location for the output JPG files
(Target_Path) and adjust the number of pictures in a folder for
burning CDs or DVDs (NoFilesInFolder). The default values for
SharpenIntensity, Contrast, JPGChromeFactor, JPGLumFactor, and
JPGSubSampling are preset to optimal values and generally do not
need to be modified.
