It only takes a little love to create the ‘best Mother’s Day ever’

As most of you know, Sunday, May 12, is 

Mother’s Day. If this news catches you by surprise 

(yep, I’m talking to you — the one sitting 

there with a horrified look on your face that says, 

“It’s already Mother’s Day?”), never fear. You 

still have plenty of time to choose a card, or order 

flowers, or reserve a table for Sunday brunch. 

The thing is, for most of us moms, it’s not 

about the pretty card, the colorful bouquet, the 

fancy meal or any of the other gifts people toss 

around on Mother’s Day. Don’t get me wrong — 

all of those are nice, but they are not the most 

important part of the day. 

It’s about time. Specifically, time spent visiting 

with a parent, in person if possible; if not, 

thank goodness for cellphones and video calls. 

Those are the memories we treasure, bringing 

them out and reliving them again and again in 

our minds as the years pass and children (and 

parents) grow older. 

When my son was little, I was a single divorced 

mom, struggling to make ends meet and 

raise an adventurous toddler. I remember one 

particular Mother’s Day, when my son was 5 

years old. Looking back, it could have been the 

worst day ever. Instead, it’s one that I still cherish 

nearly 20 years later. 

The Monday before Mother’s Day, my son 

came home from kindergarten, excitedly telling 

me, “Mother’s Day is coming! I’m going to get 

you the best gift ever!” On Wednesday, the one 

night a week the court proclaimed he should 

spend with his dad, he happily packed his bag 

and set off for his overnight visit. 

When I picked him up after kindergarten the 

following afternoon, he seemed a little subdued, 

but soon reverted to his normal rambunctious 

self. The following day, Friday, he was a little withdrawn. 

At bedtime, after reading a favorite story 

and singing a couple of lullabies, I gently kissed his 

forehead as he started to drift off to sleep. 

As I stood to leave his bedroom, however, he 

quickly awoke and shot out of his bed and into 

my arms, sobbing. 

“Daddy says you don’t deserve a Mother’s 

Day gift,” he cried. “He says it’d serve you right 

to get a big fat turd.” 

My heart almost broke. I was horrified — although 

not entirely surprised — that my ex had 

taken his anger toward me and shot it like an 

arrow, straight to our son’s heart. Holding back 

tears (and, truth be told, fury toward my ex), I 

held my son tightly, explaining that Mother’s 

Day isn’t about presents; it’s about sharing your 

love and spending time with someone special. 

“But I promised you the best gift ever!” he 

wailed. 

“The best gifts aren’t something you can 

buy,” I assured him. “They can be something 

simple, something handmade, like a drawing 

— or it can just be hanging out and watching a 

movie together.” 

Don’t get me wrong. I am light-years away 

from being a perfect, or even a “good” mother. 

It’s just that I’ve discovered there’s no such 

thing as a perfect parent. We’re all learning as 

we go and doing the best we can (or at least, 

that’s what we’re supposed to do). 

That night, my son’s tears eventually 

stopped, and he fell asleep … while I went to 

my own room, unsettled in heart and mind, and 

aching for the pain my child was experiencing. 

Finally, I fell asleep. 

Early Saturday morning — and I mean EAR- 

LY; the sun hadn’t even risen — I was awakened 

by a lot of clattering and “thunking” sounds 

coming from the kitchen, followed by the sound 

of my son’s voice. He seemed to be talking to 

himself, but I couldn’t make out the words. 

Anticipating the discovery of a huge mess, 

I groggily got out of bed and peered into the 

kitchen.

Yep. It was a huge mess, all right! In the middle 

of the kitchen floor was my angelic child, 

along with a massive plastic bowl. He was covered 

in white powder and licking something yellow 

off his fingers. I quickly discovered that he’d 

emptied the contents of a 5-pound bag of flour 

into the bowl (at least part of it made it into the 

bowl) and was in the process of unwrapping every 

stick of butter from a 1-pound package and 

dumping them into the flour. 

“Whatcha doing?” I asked, already dreading 

the massive clean-up ahead of me. 

“We’re gonna make Mama’s Day cookies and 

decorate them and then bake them and then eat 

them!” he exclaimed happily. “But we can’t eat 

them till tomorrow.” 

It was then I remembered one evening the 

previous Christmas. The two of us had worked 

together to mix sugar cookie dough, roll it out 

and cut it into festive shapes before adding 

sprinkles and other decorations. (That’s another 

memory I pull out and relive over and over 

in my heart.) 

My anger immediately evaporated, replaced 

by a bubble of joy. Even at the age of 5, my child 

realized that time is a million times more valuable 

than gifts. 

We spent the rest of the morning making 

and decorating cookies. We only had Christmas-themed 

cookie cutters, but it didn’t matter. 

That Mother’s Day weekend I was treated to 

reindeer and Santa cookies decorated with pastel 

sprinkles and pale pink frosting. 

The next morning, on Mother’s Day, I did the 

unthinkable: I allowed my child to have sugar 

cookies and milk for breakfast before church. 

(OK, I had sugar cookies for breakfast, too!) 

In the years since, I’ve received numerous 

gifts, flowers and cards for Mother’s Day. None 

can compare to that long-ago weekend, when a 

5-year-old boy discovered the true meaning of 

love. 

If you’re lucky enough to have a mother figure 

in your life, take time to celebrate with her 

this weekend. And if you decide to make sugar 

cookies, help her clean up the mess!

Princess had a rough start, coming to us 

from the top of a euthanasia list at a rural 

shelter in Alabama a few months ago. We 

knew she did not deserve to die and had to 

save this sweet girl. Princess appears to be 

a lab or hound mix, weighs approximately 

40lbs, and we believe her age to be 2-3 years 

old. Princess can be described as a cuddly, 

loving girl who is eager to lay in bed or have 

some fun, whatever her person is up to! She 

does well with other dogs but an introduction 

prior to adoption is always recommended. 

Princess is potty trained. She is heartworm

Beans and combine them with chopped

Add the vegetables to the pan and cook 4 

to 5 minutes or until crisp-tender. Add the 

cooked vegetables to the cooked steak and 

mix; set aside. 

For the sauce, in a separate bowl whisk 

together 1/4 cup of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon 

of hoisin sauce, 1/2 teaspoon of sesame oil, 

1 tablespoon of minced garlic and ginger, 

1/4 cup of beef stock, 2 tablespoons of dark 

brown sugar and 1/2 tablespoon of cornstarch. 

Pour the sauce to a large saucepan over 

medium heat; bring it to a simmer and hold 

for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring constantly, until 

mixture is thick. Add the cooked steak and 

vegetables to the pan and combine. 

To serve, ladle mixture over bowls of 

rice. Garnish with chopped green onions, 

cilantro and a squeeze of lime juice, and 

enjoy.
