Annie Murphy-Robinson is a trailblazer whose work defies convention
in the world of contemporary art, where limitations are continually
pushed and originality has no bounds. With a deeply personal past and
an inventive and compelling approach, Murphy-Robinson transports
spectators to a realm where imagination and memories collide and
emotion is freely expressed using sandpaper and charcoal.

Murphy-Robinson, who was born
in 1967, turned to art as a way
of self-expression and as a haven
from loneliness in addition to
seeking creative fulfillment. Art became her
haven as a young child, a place where she
could delve deeply into her own experiences
and feelings, amidst the turmoil of a blended
family.
Murphy-Robinson’s work, which has its
roots in her own story, is a monument to the
strength of memory and the malleability of
truth. She produces hyper-realistic drawings
that conflate perception and reality by use
sandpaper to embed layers of charcoal into
strong printmaking paper. Every grain of
sandpaper or charcoal stroke is a purposeful
act of reclamation and redefining memories—both
imagined and real.
Murphy-Robinson’s use of her children’s
imagery to convey the subject of youth
and innocence runs throughout her body
of work. Her characters are vulnerable and
real, frequently depicted in periods of silent
reflection or engagement with animals. The
audience is given a glimpse into the intimate
realm of the feminine experience during
these times, which is marked by hesitancy,

OF SEURAT’S

Few paintings in the history of art are as captivating and thought-provoking as Georges
Seurat’s “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.” Viewers are transported into
a realm where solitude and leisure coexist, where painstaking brushstrokes create a tapestry
of contemporary life frozen in time, while they stare at this enormous painting. Analysing
Seurat’s masterwork in further detail reveals not just a picture but also a comprehensive
investigation of art, society, and the human condition.
The goal of Seurat’s artistic vision was
to convey the timeless rather than just
a scene of bourgeois leisure. Seurat’s
Neo-Impressionist method, with
its roots in classical ideals but firmly rooted
in the rapidly emerging contemporary era,
revolutionized the art world and gave rise
to a new movement known as Divisionism
or Pointillism. Seurat created a symphony of
light and shadow by painstakingly arranging
dots and colors, provoking viewers to reflect

A young Cole Stirling found refuge in the wild landscapes of Zimbabwe,
deep in the heart of Africa. He was raised in the wilderness and was born
there, and thus his love of the natural world began at a young age. Every
minute he spent in nature, from the wide stretches of Hwange National
Park to the tranquil allure of waterholes, became a brushstroke on the
canvas that was his life.

Cole saw art as a fundamental way to
express his abiding love of the wilderness
rather than just as a hobby.
He started a voyage to capture the
essence of Africa’s biodiversity by drawing
his boyhood favorites. He developed as an
artist at Rhodes University in South Africa,
where he earned a degree in fine art. Drawing
continued to be an essential component
of his creative toolkit, flowing naturally into
his photographic vision even if his primary
focus was on shooting.
Cole’s artistic journey continued with a
new chapter in London. Even in the middle
of the bustle of the city, he never wavered in
his commitment to capturing the splendor of
the natural world. He took advantage of every
chance he got to enter the industry, using
every second as fuel for his inventions.
In 2015, his quest for knowledge brought
him certifications as a field and trail guide
in South Africa, which enhanced his knowledge
and appreciation of the wilderness.

Understanding Charcoal:
Charcoal is a carbonaceous
material that is created by burning
wood in a low-oxygen environment.
It comes in various forms, including vine
charcoal, compressed charcoal, and charcoal
pencils. Vine charcoal is soft and produces
lighter marks, making it ideal for initial
sketches and broad strokes. Compressed
charcoal, on the other hand, is denser and
darker, allowing for richer tones and finer details.
Charcoal pencils offer the convenience
of a pencil while still retaining the expressive
qualities of charcoal.
Materials Needed:
Before diving into your charcoal artwork,
gather your materials. You’ll need:
• Charcoal sticks or pencils (varying
hardness for different effects)
• Paper suitable for charcoal (textured
paper holds the charcoal better)
• Kneaded eraser and/or gum eraser
• Blending tools (such as blending

it’s essential to protect it from smudging and
fading over time. Consider spraying a fixative
spray over your finished drawing to seal
the charcoal and prevent it from smudging.
Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions
when using fixative spray and apply it
in a well-ventilated area.
