Limburg WORKS
SPECIAL EDITION - APRIL 2024
2
WELCOME to this special
edition of the Limburg
WORKS magazine
Get ready for a delightful rendezvous
at the Centre Ceramique in
Maastricht, courtesy of the Open
Coffee Maastricht Foundation. A
memorable gathering for a myriad of
reasons. Firstly, it marks a special
moment as it's the first time the
Open Coffee event is conducted
entirely in English. Secondly, it's a
testament to the collaborative efforts
of various stakeholders, including
expats and local organizations, to
ensure its success. And finally, it
served as a platform for expats to
mingle with locals, fostering unity
and understanding while bridging
cultural divides.
Collaborating with the Open Coffee
were the Expat Center, the Cross
Border Info Point, Border Labor
Maastricht and Kerkrade, and the
South Limburg Work Center. The
latter served as the host venue
within the Centre Ceramique.
Although the Maastricht Museum was
not a direct collaborative partner, it
took a center stage in the program.
Recently integrated within the Centre
Ceramique, its inclusion proved to
be insightful. Particularly for expats
unfamiliar with Maastricht, the
museum serves as a captivating
window into the city's storied past,
offering a vivid portrayal of its rich
history spanning centuries.
Throughout the collection of
interesting texts, vibrant snapshots
from the successful April 26, 2024,
Open Coffee Maastricht gathering are
seamlessly woven in to underline the
effectiveness of these meetings.
the city's family
room.

prominent place, allowing them use of the
outdoor terrace in the summer when the
weather is good.
In his bestseller “IKIGAI - The Japanese Art of
19
Living,” author Ken Mogi talks about the
Japanese term “ichigo ichie,” which literally
means “a moment, an encounter,” and he
says, “Precisely because an encounter is
fleeting, it should be taken seriously.”
This is exactly what the Open Coffee Maastricht
stands for! Enabeling short meetings and
networking on a professional level. The meeting
at the Centre Ceramique was an excellent
example of this, with varied and entertaining
impulses and valuable meetings.
The journey through time begins
Impressive time travel
Maastricht Museum is a hub for local
collections and stories. It's where you
will discover the city's past. The
timeline of the permanent presentation
takes you along important themes in
the city's history: prehistory, Roman
times, golden Middle Ages, fortified
city, industrial and workers' city and
birthplace of the Maastricht Treaty. In
addition, there are regular changing
exhibitions. You can also experience
lectures, workshops, a guided tour,
presentations and performances. The
museum offers a well-filled program of
activities.
Two-way street
Traditionally, museums often arise from
an elite that owns collections and places
them in a building. But things are
different at the Maastricht Museum. A
conscious choice was made for two-way
traffic. Not just showing what you have,
but also being curious and listening to
what people think. The museum actively
asks for feedback and really does
something with it. In addition, the
museum actively collects stories and
interesting themes from the public.
The Maastricht Museum inspires and
invites visitors to interact
People want to give meaning to the place where they
live, work, study or visit. We therefore want to do
justice to all those stories that come as a result.
Simple because there is not just the one story.
Wim Hupperetz
Director Maastricht Museum
Local and International
Local and international are merging in
Maastricht. And therefore also in the
museum. Although the focus lies on the
cities local history, a broader perspective
is touched upon. From Maastricht as an
international trade center and foreign
occupiers to the European Union. This
dual character can also be seen in the
mix of visitors and the use of language.
The overal communication is in English,
Dutch and the Maastricht dialect. In this
way, the Maastricht Museum contributes
to keeping alive the regional language
with its soft g and elongated vowels.
At the Maastricht Museum,
there is much more to
experience than just
admiring exhibits. There is
always something fun,
educational or interesting to
do. From lectures and
workshops to guided tours,
presentations or
performances. Themes such
as Maastricht, history,
culture and the hidden
stories of the city form the
common thread in the
activities on offer. Keep an
eye on the Maastricht
Museum website, because
new activity tips are added
regularly. So getting bored
is a thing of the past!
The Maastricht Museum is
located on the 1st floor of
Centre Céramique, at Plein
1992. In April 2023, the
pilot phase started and the
doors opened to visitors for
the first time. At the end of
June the official opening
took place of both the
museum and the first major
temporary exhibition:
Maastricht 1673 - The Sun
King Conquers the City.
Meanwhile, the museum
hall has been redesigned
and enriched based on the
wishes of the public. On to
the next step!
