Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Vincenzo’s Little Italy on Bayshore Road in North Cape 

May. This local restaurant offers you a chance to eat in the dining room 

with full table service or grab takeout from the pizzeria or just enjoy a 

quick bite at the table. They also offer delivery to the surrounding area if 

you want to enjoy a meal, but don’t want to leave the house. 

The food: We grabbed takeout to close out the weekend after a Sunday 

packed with spring cleaning. And after all that, we simply did not 

feel like cooking. We ordered Antipasto All Vincenzo to start — onions, 

tomatoes, ham, salami, provolone, olives, eggs, roasted peppers, artichokes, 

prosciutto and shar provolone on a bed of lettuce. Dan went 

for chicken parm with gnocchi for his meal, which comes with a salad 

and bread. Nicole enjoyed a Panzarotti made with mozzarella cheese 

and sauce, baked to perfection. It also came with a container of sauce 

for dipping... and we saved it for our own pasta this week. Everything 

was delicious and we still have leftovers in the fridge that we’re looking 

forward to. 

The specials: Something to keep in mind if you do visit the restaurant 

is their Early Bird specials available daily from 4-5:30pm, excluding 

holidays and holiday weekends. Their special entree menu offers 

dishes for $20 which include a cup of soup or garden salad, bread, butter 

and select desserts. They all also include a vegetable and potato or 

a side of pasta. They offer a variety of entrees including Tour of Italy, 

Prime Rib, Chicken Marsala and Shrimp Scampi. Check out their menu 

online for all offerings. 

The takeaway: Vincenzo’s is open daily from 11am. If you’re having 

a private event, they also offer catering on-site and off-site. Grab 

entrees, salads and hoagies for your group by calling 609-889-6610. 

And keep that Early Bird special in mind for the next time you’re looking 

to grab an early dinner. That $20 deal really gets you a filling meal and 

there’s plenty offered to suit any taste from seafood, meats and pasta. 

We’re already planning a future visit.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Having just visited the Ocean City 

visitor center, I cannot fathom why 

it has taken so many years to travel 

to the site. And you are wondering 

why a bird watcher might be 

interested in a visitor center? The answer 

is the wonderfully preserved patch of dune 

forest lying immediately south of the center, 

visible from the elevated parking area, hosting 

hundreds of breeding herons and egrets, 

making the site the hottest natural vista on the 

Atlantic Seaboard. 

Reminiscent of the old Stone Harbor 

Heronry back in its heyday, the Ocean City 

rookery is a window into our past when dune 

forest stretched from the Carolinas to Cape 

Cod. The cedars and hackberry supported 

millions of splendid birds whose breeding 

plumes led to their demise at the hands 

of plume hunters just over a century ago, 

destined to adorn the hats of fashionable 

Victorian ladies. Today, after a century of 

protection, it’s now finding nesting space that 

challenges birds. But the Ocean City visitor 

center planners wisely elected to preserve 

the bird-strewn patch of dune forest and the 

birds give thanks with their presence April 

through August. On the day of my visit, the 

treetops billowed with the spread raiment of 

Great Egret breeding plumes. Filament fine 

and fanned like a feathered starburst. “Make 

a nice hat,” a visitor quipped. But in these 

times, the spray of feathers attracts only the 

eyes of prospecting female egrets. Crouched 

on their nests, many of the females were 

already incubating eggs. Lower down, incubating 

Snowy egrets were doing the same. 

This is one of the few times of year the bare 

skin behind the bill blazes lime green on Great 

Egrets, red on Snowy. Bronze-colored Glossy 

Ibis and jug-shaped, Black-crowned Night 

Herons round out the show. The Yellowcrowned 

Night Herons favor the east side of 

the colony and the nests of incubating birds 

are so low, human observers can see themselves 

reflected in the bird’s amber eyes. As 

arresting as the sight of so many stately birds 

is the cacophony of sound — the conjoined, 

grunts, squeals, and squawks of hormonally 

fueled birds mixed with the electric chatter 

of Boat-tailed Grackles, bleat of Red-winged 

Blackbirds and guffaws of Laughing Gulls. 

Winds waft from the south treat visitors to 

the wholesome reek of thriving heronry. 

Welcome to the Jersey Shore as our ancestors 

knew. A window into our past, a tribute to our 

conservation-minded present, and a down 

payment on a bountiful future.

Maybe there’s a fine line between 

edgy drama and soap opera 

drama. Or maybe there’s something 

I’m not getting. Please help 

me decide. 

I was really enjoying the beginning of the 

relatively new series called Beef on Netflix. 

The action in the series starts when a hardcore 

street “dis” turns into a full-blown road rage 

event between the two main characters. 

Vindictiveness, vandalism, venom — all 

the nasty “v” words pop up in this show. And 

I was along for the ride... for a few episodes. 

Somewhere, it started to feel like a soap opera. 

Then it tried to bring back the edge, maybe 

too late. 

I know I’m in the minority here, so let me 

know what you thought of the show? It has 

won several awards — multiple Primetime 

Emmys, Golden Globes, and Critics Choice. It 

has a nearly perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes 

with a very high score on the audience side 

as well. The two actors, Steven Yuen and Ali 

Wong are hilarious and have been showered

with awards. A few of you out there loved it, I 

know it. Tell me what I’m missing. 

Another show I was anticipating was the 

new reimagining of Mr. and Mrs. Smith (the 

popular 2005 movie starred Brad Pitt and 

Angelina Jolie). The very hip and stylish Mara 

Erskine and Donald Glover star as the couple. 

They have wonderful chemistry, and the 

first few episodes were explosive. Very fun 

to watch. At some point, it turned all at once 

gruesome, less stylish and more clunky. 

This show hasn’t been out too long, the 

first season is available. Amazon/MGM produced 

it, and Prime reports it had one of its 

top-five audiences watching its premiere. It 

hadn’t been on soon enough to get any nominations 

for awards. 

With a critic score of nearly 100% and 

audience score of 66% on RT, I know fans are 

out there. Tell me what keeps you watching. 

I love a good spy show, but this one went to 

places I don’t normally consider for an intelligent 

spy storyline. 

Beef is getting a second season, but the 

story and characters will be completely new, 

according to Esquire magazine. There’s no 

indication yet whether Mr. & Mrs. Smith will 

come back, but it did end on a cliffhanger. 

Am I being too picky? Did you burn 

through the first seasons of either of these 

shows, or both? There was a compelling reason 

to start binging — yet I fell off. Help me to 

understand or let me know I’m just not getting

Congratulations — you’ve decided to 

run a foot race. You may be a little 

nervous, but you’re also determined. 

Your first race is a great time 

to remember the old saying, “You 

wouldn’t worry so much about what others 

think of you if you realized how seldom 

they do.” This quote, attributed to Eleanor 

Roosevelt and many others, is especially true 

on race day. The other runners are running 

their own race. They aren’t judging your pace, 

your body or your sneakers. 

Choose a race that fits the distances 

you’ve been running and set a goal. Do you 

want to achieve a certain time, or will you be 

proud just to finish? Before the race, get a good 

night’s sleep. Check the weather and set out 

your running clothes. Don’t try anything new 

for the race. While it’s important to change 

your running gear when it wears out, race

drink — adrenaline may have your stomach 

churning already. Run without headphones, 

especially if it’s your first race. You’ll want to 

hear the announcements and the encouraging 

words of the spectators and your fellow runners. 

After the race, walk around to cool down 

and help reduce soreness. This is also a good 

time to thank the volunteers. 

Arrive early. If you ran races years ago, 

you remember standing in line to fill out registration 

forms on the day of the race. Those 

days are over. Today, you go to a website like 

RunSignUp.com, find your race, fill out the 

form and make your payment. For the analog 

personalities among us, this may be an 

adjustment, but it is handy in the long run, 

because this website also has race-specific 

information, such as where to pick up your 

packet, where to park, and details like “All 

runners must maintain a 16:00/mile.” You can 

also check out the results from last year’s race 

to see what you’re up against. 

Concentrate on starting out slow — 

excitement can unleash your inner jackrabbit. 

As you run, enjoy the scenery and the atmosphere 

— it’s nice to have people cheering 

you on. Walk a bit if you need to. Remember 

that the person who finishes last in every race 

is still ahead of the people who don’t join. 

The Great Cape May Footrace is Saturday, 

May 11. There is no race-day registration, so 

all runners must sign up before the event. 

Registration is $40 for the 5K and $50 for 

the 10K. There’s also the Escape the Cape 

Triathlon on June 2, and the Cape May Point 5 

Mile Race on June 15.

My parents have this no-shoe rule. They 

live in a tiny cottage not far from the beach 

with hardwood floors and I totally understand, 

but my husband does not. Every time 

we visit, my mother or father have to tell him 

to take off his shoes. I have already told him to 

take them off before we get to the front door. 

He thinks my parents are controlling and 

inflexible. He also thinks their rules are ridiculous 

and chooses to torment them with his 

noncompliance. I agree about them being controlling, 

but I also think it is their house and 

we should be respectful. Can you think of any 

kind of compromise which will end this silly

Yes, by all means compromise. Pop over to 

Casale’s Shoes and buy your husband a spiffy 

pair of soft-soled, sheep-lined slippers. Have 

a little chat with him and tell him about the 

game plan, insisting that they never see or 

smell the outdoors. Present them to Mom and 

Pop informing them that they will stay at their 

house. Explain that your husband has sensitive 

tootsies, and this is the perfect solution. 

You also might want to invite the gang out to a 

Sunday Funday at the Filling Station, emphasis 

on FUNday. Harmony is the goal.
