Workplace Tragedy Memorial Service
Council hosted its Annual Workplace Tragedy Memorial
Service at Holroyd Gardens in Merrylands on Saturday
27 April. The service was held at the Wall of Memory at the
former Goodlet and Smith Brickworks site to commemorate
those who have been injured or tragically killed at work and
those who have died as a result of a work-related illness. Sadly, 45 Australian
workers have been killed at work this year, while thousands more suffer
serious workplace injuries that may result in long-term injury or a more
permanent disability. Everyone that goes to work has the right to return
home safely and we will continue to advocate for the importance of work
health and safety to make our workplaces safer.
Towering additions
coming to Parra CBD
ELLIE BUSBY
Two multi-million dollar towers
are set to soar over Westfield
Parramatta, after the plans
were given the tick of approval by the
State Government.
Developer Urban Property Group
is set to deliver 350 new residential
units as part of its $600 million buildto-rent
development at 2 Fitzwilliam
Street in the heart of the CBD.
The western residential build-torent
tower will reach a maximum of
48-storeys tall. Along with accommodation,
the building will also feature a
roof deck, rooftop pool, gym facilities,
children’s play areas, games rooms,
music and multi-purpose rooms, a
co-working space and a cinema.
The eastern tower is set to be a
maximum of 35-storeys and will offer
commercial office and retail use,
which will include a ground floor
retail offering designed to complement
the neighbouring Westfield
Shopping Centre food offerings.
Four basement levels would be used
for vehicle parking and servicing.
A through-site link would also
connect pedestrians from the site to
the Parramatta Train Station and Bus
Interchange. The link would function
as public space, providing opportunities
for cafés, retail, community
spaces, public art and landscaping.
The state significant development
will also generate approximately
1,537 construction and 105 operational
jobs.
Urban Property Group will now be
commencing a design competition
for the project in May.
An artist’s impression of the
approved towers.
Chief Executive Officer of Urban
Property Group Patrick Elias said
they’re “ecstatic” that the project has
been given the green light.
“This site, lying dormant for over
two decades, is ripe for transformation.
We’re charged with enthusiasm
to rejuvenate this neglected space,
injecting life and vibrancy into the
southern side of the Parramatta Train
Station,” he said.
“Our ambition for Parramatta is
to redefine what’s possible within
the Build-to-Rent sector, seamlessly
weaving together retail convenience
and commercial spaces.
“As we embark on the design
competition phase, we look forward
to collaborating with top architects
and designers to bring our vision to
life, setting new standards for urban
living.”
The development received 10
submissions from the public when it
was placed on exhibition, with eight
objecting and two in support of the
project.
According to the Department of
Planning, Housing and Infrastructure
(DPHI), the development will
provide a range of benefits for the
region and the state as a whole.
“[The development] will provide a
greater diversity of housing choice for
rental households in the Parramatta
LGA in immediate proximity to
existing and future public transport
options and provide up to 635m2 of
retail to support street activation and
the creation of a through-site link to
improve the public domain and landscaping,”
planning documents said.
The new development will tower over Westfield Parramatta.
Mother’s Day a reminder to us all
My mother loves the saying, “You never
know her value until you see her empty chair”.
It’s a poignant line ahead of Mother’s Day
this Sunday.
Fortunately my Mum is still with us, and we
get to enjoy Mother’s Day this Sunday as a
family; with a dinner out, some gifts and great
conversation.
But I’m reminded at this time of year how
difficult Mother’s Day can be for so many people
out there.
People who have lost their Mum, particularly
recently.
Those who have a troubled or fractured relationship
with their Mum, that is unable to be
repaired.
And those who are desperate to become a
Mum, but are struggling to make parenthood
happen for whatever reason.
Whatever stage you may be at in life, whether
it’s the happy family era or one that brings
sadness on occasions like this, our thoughts
here at Parra News are with you this coming
Sunday.
Some years ago, as part of my professional
work, our firm was commissioned to help
produce Blacktown City Council’s annual report.
Even for a long-time Sydneysider, it was
a revelation to learn more about an often overlooked
area of the city.
I had no idea Blacktown was the state’s largest
local government area by population. With
425,000 people, it is forecast to soon surpass
the entire state of Tasmania. It is a city of diverse
cultures, home to people representing
more than 182 different languages – including
large Filipino and Sudanese communities
less frequently encountered anywhere else. I
also became acquainted with attractions such
as Blacktown International Sports Park, the
spiritual home of baseball in NSW.
The overall impression, even back then, was
of an ambitious city on the up, looking to professionalise.
Now that I think about it, it was around this
time that Tony Bleasdale became Mayor. I
only knew Tony by reputation, having seen
him across crowded rooms at several Business
Western Sydney events in Parramatta. Instantly
recognisable by his lilting Pommie accent,
passion for Blacktown and love of a good anecdote,
his was a 60-year love story with his
adopted country, Australia.
He migrated here at age 15, initially starting
out as a bricklayer and construction professional
before his election to Blacktown City
Council in 1996. Highlights of an impressive
public contribution include receiving an Order
of Australia medal in 2010, as well as charitable
involvement with Westmead Hospital,
Cancer Council NSW and the Blacktown Relay
for Life.
Tony Bleasdale’s sudden death on a flight
back from Asia last week appears to have involved
tragic and unlikely circumstances. As
Mayor, he had been leading a council delegation
to sister cities in China and Korea in order
to drive jobs and investment back to Blacktown.
In recent days, it’s been fascinating to read
more about Tony Bleasdale’s life. The portrait
that has emerged is of an avuncular, good
bloke. “It didn’t matter whether it was the governor
or the garbage collector. He knew everybody
and he was friends with everybody,”
Deputy Mayor Chris Quilkey told 2GB.
It quickly becomes obvious that it was his
years living in the Western Sydney suburb of
Shalvey that gave him deep affinity with the
plight of the disadvantaged in society. Specifically,
he saw firsthand how concentrated public
housing in the Mount Druitt area, detached
from public amenities, sporting facilities and
access to quality job opportunities, helped to
concentrate poverty. “I wanted to do what I
could to improve the lives of ordinary folk,” he
once said.
Perhaps Tony Bleasdale will be most remembered
as a fierce advocate for equity between
the west and the rest. The Greater Sydney
Commission’s notorious “three cities” vision
for Sydney left out Blacktown. No leader of the
state’s biggest municipality could be satisfied.
Inspired by the Parramatta story, he wanted to
Entertainment.................................31-41
Mother’s Day..................................42-43
Business Directory...................44-45
renew the Blacktown CBD in its own inimitable
style.
In March last year, Blacktown City Council
signed a major $2 billion agreement with
Walker Corporation to revamp the Blacktown
CBD. Though much remained to be finalised,
it was a big vision to revitalise the city centre
with new jobs, housing, quality infrastructure
and public spaces. Above all, it was about
making Blacktown a destination in its own
right. Not an afterthought on the train line, or
a dormitory on the way to somewhere else.
It was Tony Bleasdale who rang the alarm on
the shortage of local aquatic facilities in Western
Sydney and advocated to release Prospect
Reservoir to the public. He highlighted how
Blacktown City Council’s five swimming pools
meant that the city had one pool for every
77,000 people, compared to one pool for every
17,000 in Randwick.
He was also a passionate advocate for developers
paying their fair share to ensure councils
had a sustainable funding source.
It’s easy to feel superior as a resident of Parramatta,
which has received so much government
investment in recent years. Yet immediately
to our west are some of Sydney’s most
economically deprived suburbs, attached to
skyrocketing growth areas from Schofields
and Tallawong to Box Hill and Marsden Park.
Blacktown Council started in 1906 from
humble beginnings, but is in the midst of its
grand adventure to become a city of the future.
Men like Tony Bleasdale were part of that
story. Others will finish it.
46-storey tower tops out
The $357 million Paramount on Parkes will open this August
ELLIE BUSBY
Located in the Parramatta
CBD, ALAND’s long-awaited
Paramount on Parkes has
celebrated a huge construction
milestone.
ALAND has recently held a
topping out ceremony to mark the
end of construction on the major
$357 million development on Parkes
Street.
Set to open in August this year, the
new 46-storey tower will contain
331 luxury apartments, a ground
floor retail precinct, resort-style
amenities and six floors of dedicated
commercial space at the summit.
Apartments will be available in
one-, two- and three-bedroom
formats and offer open-plan living,
and private balconies.
Residents will also have access
to an outdoor swimming pool,
playground, landscaped gardens
and other communal space on the
podium level.
As someone who was born and
raised in western Sydney, ALAND
founder and owner Andrew Hrsto
said he was immensely proud of
Paramount on Parkes, one of the
A topping out ceremony was recently held to mark the end of construction on the major development.
largest projects that ALAND has
developed.
“Paramount stands as a beacon
of our enduring commitment to
providing much-needed housing in
the Parramatta CBD and western
Sydney generally,” he said.
“With its blend of residential
apartments, ground floor retail
and commercial spaces, and views
of our much-loved Parramatta
Eels stadium, Sydney CBD and
surrounding parklands, this building
illustrates our dedication to
meeting the evolving needs of this
community and is also a landmark
achievement in ALAND’s own
journey.”
Hrsto also paid tribute to the
5,000-strong workforce that was
involved in the development of the
156-metre-high tower.
“On this momentous occasion, I
extend my heartfelt gratitude to all
those who have contributed to the
realisation of this visionary project,”
he said.
“As we gather here today to
mark this occasion, let us reaffirm
ALAND’s ongoing collaboration
with both state and local authorities,
and our commitment to help tackle
the housing supply problems that
we are facing in New South Wales.”
Speaking at the event, Federal
Member for Parramatta Andrew
Charlton called Paramount on
Parkes a “remarkable contribution”
to the future of the growing and
dynamic city.
“As the fastest growing CBD in
Australia, Parramatta needs more
An artist’s impression of Paramount
on Parkes.
high-quality housing, close to our
exceptional transport hubs, lifestyle
amenities, and beautiful parklands
– Paramount on Parkes exemplifies
this,” he said.
“With vistas of the river, Little
India and the CBD, it is a real contribution
to our city, offering a symbol
and benchmark for mixed-use
development here in Parramatta.”
YOUR CITY NEWS
Lord Mayor Cr Pierre Esber presents a cheque to
Westmead Hospital Foundation General Manager
Bianca Crvelin.
It was a privilege to visit Westmead Hospital
recently to hand over a cheque for $5,000
to the Westmead Hospital Foundation in
support of local nurses and their unwavering
commitment to our community.
The donation coincides with International
a pioneer in modern nursing.
Council is proud of our local nurses who
are the backbone of our healthcare system,
giving comfort, care, and expertise to
patients 24/7.
The Westmead Hospital Foundation has been
$44 million apartment complex
proposed for Carlingford
ELLIE BUSBY
Plans for a total of 91 new units
and an 80-place childcare
centre in Carlingford have
been revealed.
Property developer Capio Property
Group has revealed the first
look at the proposed $44 million
apartment complex, with the plans
now lodged with City of Parramatta
Council.
Located at 15A and 15B Moseley
Street and 25-31 Donald Street,
the proposed development will be
constructed in two stages.
Stage one will see a total of 46
apartments built over a part four,
part seven-storey building.
Under stage two, 45 apartments
and an 80-place childcare centre
will be constructed as part of a
six-storey building. A total of 22
residential units will be allocated
for affordable housing.
The units proposed will comprise
of a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom
apartments.
According to the Statement of
Environmental Effects, the development
will deliver a “quality product”
An artist’s impression of the proposed Carlingford development.
within the Parramatta LGA.
“The proposed development
provides additional housing within
proximity to services and facilities
to meet the needs of residents
within the Carlingford area,” it said.
“The development provides
greater opportunity for connectivity
and communication between
members of the community
through the provision of communal
open space areas and pedestrian
linkages throughout the site.”
29 per cent of the site will be used
as communal open space, with a
combination of open lawn, children’s
nature play, private terraces,
a BBQ and dining area proposed.
A shared basement will provide
space for 131 car spaces, three
motorcycle parking spaces and 92
spots for bikes.
The development will be within
approximately 750 metres walking
distance from the entrance to
Carlingford Light Rail Station.
A traffic report said the development’s
traffic generation on the
surrounding area will be minimal.
“The surrounding road network is
considered to be capable of accommodating
the additional traffic
projected to be generated by the
subject development,” it said.
“And it is considered that the
subject site provides an acceptable
proximity and connectivity to
nearby public transport infrastructure
and services.”
If given the tick of approval, four
houses will be demolished at the
site to make way for the multi-storey
apartment complex.
Ultimately, it will be the Sydney
Central City Regional Panel who
will determine if the proposed
development goes ahead.
Action, not just words
Five pillars: City of Parramatta launches impressive new First Nations Strategy
ELLIE BUSBY
Officials gather at the launch of the First Nationa Strategy. Photo: Jason Nichols.
A
new First Nations Strategy
from City of Parramatta is
promising to turn words
into action, as the local Council
continues to build on its relationship
with Dharug and the First
Nations community.
Launched at Parramatta Town
Square last week, the new fiveyear
strategy intends to drive
understanding, recognition, and
respect of Dharug and other First
Nations people across the City of
Parramatta.
It’s a first for a Council within
greater Sydney beyond a Reconciliation
Action Plan.
The strategy will work towards
First Nations people having
better access to local services and
programs, grant funding, and
greater input into Council’s work
and decision-making processes.
Council said it will also build on
its ongoing efforts to acknowledge
Dharug history and celebrate their
rich culture.
The strategy has been developed
in consultation with the First
Nations community, service providers,
staff and the wider community
for almost two years.
City of Parramatta First Nations
Committee chair Jayne Christian
said consultation with Dharug
and the First Nations Indigenous
community was key.
“The First Nations Strategy is
the result of a process informed by
the Aboriginal Community that
distils what’s important to the
Aboriginal Community connected
to Parramatta,” she said.
“It allows for the cohesive functioning
of the whole community
and it embeds these principles
and objectives into how the
City of Parramatta measures
success.”
For Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre
Esber, the strategy sets an example
with the First Nations community
that they can all move forward
together.
“We want to centre Dharug and all
First Nations people at the heart of
what Council does,” Esber added.
“We are moving past a reconciliation
plan and taking the next step
towards practical outcomes – I am
proud Council is stepping up and
delivering this strategy.”
Esber said this new strategy allows
for a bigger vision to become a
reality.
“Our goals and actions must also
reflect the needs and aspirations
of Dharug and other First Nations
people who have a connection to
this Country,” he said.
“Parramatta has always been
an important gathering place for
Dharug and other First Nations
people, and we want to ensure it
continues to be.”
City of Parramatta said the strategy
is focused around five pillars:
social justice, cultural leadership,
social cohesion, celebration and
accountability.
It intends to build on the legacy
of Council’s Stretch Reconciliation
Action Plan, which increased spend
in procurement from First Nations
businesses and delivered greater
incorporation of First Nations
culture into programming.
LOCAL NEWS
The big push for shopping
centres to clean up their act
ELLIE BUSBY
“Our shopping centres need to be
cleaned”: From cigarette butts to bird
poo, Councillors and residents are
concerned local shops could be losing business
due to lack of cleanliness.
More needs to be done to ensure local
shopping centres are clean and inviting to
shoppers, according to Councillors at the
latest Cumberland Council meeting.
The issue was raised when Councillors
began discussing the draft Cumberland Local
Shops Study, which was developed to explore
how local shops can be enhanced to meet
the needs of the community now and in the
future.
Councillor Paul Garrard said he supported
the report, but that it doesn’t look at the
cleanliness of the local centres in a strategic
context.
“Cleanliness is major. People won’t go to
centres that are untidy and by that I mean not
necessarily in terms of their décor around the
place but I’m talking about the stuff that can
be picked up and cleaned up on a daily basis,”
he said.
“I feel that there’s just not enough emphasis
being placed on the cleanliness of our centres.
“I’m happy with some of the work that’s been
done, and I know it can be done, but it needs
Ibis birds are leaving quite a mess around town.
to be intensified and this report doesn’t look
at that.”
Bird poo in particular is a concern to
Garrard, who said more needs to be done to
clean it up.
“I go through Granville Shopping Centre
today and I see the road smothered in ibis shit
from one end of it to the other,” he continued.
“There’s poo everywhere: on our chairs, our
tables, our furniture, on window sills, under
awnings, you now have these solar panels,
there’s a place under the solar panel where
[birds are] now roosting.”
The report also received 18 submissions
when it was placed on public exhibition earlier
this year, with many residents also criticising
the cleanliness of local shops.
“There is a high amount of litter e.g. cigarette
butts, paper, cardboard at front of shops, at
the entrance to Constance Street [in Guildford]
and around back at Porst Place,” one
submission read.
“It is generally dirty. It needs to be hosed
down. No rubbish allowed. Clean up
Constance Street. It is visually unpleasant.”
Another said the Woolworths Granville
carpark is “always untidy, needs disposing
of rubbish left by shoppers” and is “not an
inviting entry for a worthy retail.”
Do you think more needs to be done to
clean up local shopping centres? Let us
Walk with safety in mind
Local students get behind Walk Safely to School Day this Friday, May 10
ELLIE BUSBY
Now in its 25th year, Walk
Safely to School Day is back
this Friday – and plenty of
local schools are getting in on the
action.
Last year, Westmead Christian
Grammar School turned its car park
into a playground in an attempt to
get more families to walk to school.
It worked, with Deputy Principal
Netta Collins saying more than 90
per cent of the students walked to
school that day.
Now the local school is hoping to
encourage even more children to
lace up their walking shoes this May
10.
“We’ve been trying to increase the
engagement with it year on year,
obviously COVID shut it down a
little bit, but last year what we did
was we actually turned it into a
healthy morning moment with the
whole school community,” she told
Parra News.
“So, as they arrived to school
in the morning we had skipping
ropes out and just had some really
fun things so, when they came in,
instead of seeing a sea of cars, it was
Local students and police officers have come together to share key safety messaging. Photo: Melinda Jane.
actually a new playground for them
in the morning and so it was really
delightful.”
Championed by the Pedestrian
Council Australia, Walk Safely to
School Day aims to raise awareness
of the health, road safety, transport
and environmental benefits that
regular walking, or alternative
active transport can provide for the
long term well-being of children.
Collins said there’s a huge number
of benefits to walking to school in
the morning – especially for the
students who don’t necessarily have
access to their own backyard.
“When they walk to school there’s
a different level of engagement
between parents and children, it
gives space for conversation and
dialogue,” she said.
“But it is also getting them physically
active, it kind of gets everything
started in terms of getting the brain
charged up and ready to go for the
day.”
“A big percentage of our families
live in apartments, so they don’t
have access to those backyards and
front yards for kids to run around in
the same way, so walking to school
just activates so many things.”
Coinciding with National Road
Safety Week, Walk Safely to School
Day also encourages families to
have conversations about road
safety.
“We absolutely reinforce how
important it is for families, parents
to be holding the hands of their
children if they’re under the age of
10,” Collins added.
“Especially when it comes to
crossing the road, making sure that
they’re holding their hands when
they cross the road, using traffic
lights where they’re available and
keeping them safe, and if possible
walk with the adult on the outside,
closer to the road, and the child on
the inside.”
initiative, visit www.walk.com.au/
ELLIE BUSBY
Cumberland Council has praised
local para-athlete Ethan Hallak for
his recent achievements in wheelchair
basketball.
It’s a slam dunk for 19-year-old Cumberland
resident Hallak, who has just been
selected to represent NSW at the National
Junior Wheelchair Championships 2024.
Hailing from Greystanes, where he
attended St Paul’s Catholic College, Hallak
was recently recognised for his sporting
success at the latest Cumberland Council
meeting.
With a love of basketball dating back to
2017, Hallak’s talent was discovered early
on in his playing days – leading to him being
selected to represent NSW at the Frank
Ponta Cup.
For three consecutive years in 2022, 2023
and 2024, Hallak has also been a NSW State
level para-athlete in basketball.
At the recent 2024 National Junior Wheelchair
Championships, Hallak was one of the
leading players and helped guide the team
to an impressive fourth place finish.
Now the 19-year-old is taking aim at his
future, as he continues to work towards his
dream of becoming a Paralympian basketball
player.
Cumberland Mayor Lisa Lake, who
presented Hallak with the framed Mayoral
minute that recognised his accomplishments,
said his determination and resilience
has helped him find great success on
the basketball court.
“Ethan is driven through his success in
the sport so far and his dream is to one
day represent Australia as a Paralympian
basketball player, proudly hailing from
Greystanes,” Lake said.
“Ethan’s journey demonstrates a tremendous
spirit and determination toward
sporting excellence.
“Ethan’s achievements so far in basketball
are outstanding and his pursuit of greatness
is an inspiration to all. I look forward to
observing his continued success.”
Hallak, who is currently balancing his
studies at Western Sydney University
with his sporting commitments, was born
with proximal femoral focal deficiency – a
rare condition where the upper part of
the femur bone is either malformed or
missing.
Councillor Glenn Elmore also congratulated
Hallak on his amazing journey.
“It’s a really heartfelt story, and I think we
should feel proud of [Hallak] and what he
has achieved,” he said.
Greystanes Ward Councillor Diane
Colman said she’s looking forward to
cheering Hallak on in his future sporting
achievements.
“It takes a lot of determination and of
course a great deal of talent, so I’ll be looking
forward to seeing a local Greystanes boy,
because I’m a Councillor for Greystanes,
playing for Australia sometime soon,” she
said.
Treat Mum to
an unforgettable
dining experience.
Isla now leads baby name list
It’s official! NSW has a new baby name
queen with Isla officially proclaimed
the state’s favourite after claiming top
spot for the first time ever, while Oliver has
reclaimed the boy’s throne in a fight to the
finish line.
Oliver’s dominance has seen it NSW’s
favourite name for the ninth time in 10
years but having lost top spot to Noah last
year, Oliver has regained its crown by just
18 more registered births.
For the girls it was an even tighter race
with the top two girl’s names, Isla and
Amelia, separated by only four registered
births, having previously been tied when
the preliminary top 10 was released in
January.
But Isla has reigned supreme, moving
up from third spot in 2022 to claim NSW’s
premier position for the first time, ending
the dominance of Charlotte, Olivia and
Amelia which have been the only names to
hold number one since Chloe more than a
decade ago in 2011.
10 new names entered the top 100 for the
girls with Amara, Maisie, Margot, Lucia,
Lottie, Cleo, Kaia, Callie, Kiara and Zahra
all joining the list, while the boys saw
just eight new names with Miles, Isaiah,
Darcy, Tommy, Spencer, Parker, Mateo and
Marcus.
Debutants, Cleo and Amara, proved to
be this year’s fastest climbers, up 61 and
54 spots respectively from 2022, smashing
their way into the top 100 at 87th and 68th
while Delilah also rose in popularity,
climbing 35 spots from 90th to claim 55th
spot in 2023.
Last year’s champion, Charlotte, fell four
positions to fifth while Bella and Addison
had the biggest drop overall, falling from
positions 69th and 71st to 96th and 97th
respectively, clinging on to their top 100
status.
$230 MILLION TO TACKLE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CRISIS IN NSW
The State Government will provide
$230 million over four years as part of an
emergency package to enhance support for
domestic, family and sexual violence (DFSV)
victim-survivors and expand programs that
reduce the rate of violence against women
and children.
Labor says it is taking urgent action to
address the unacceptable rate of violence
against women and children, including
implementation of NSW’s first dedicated
Primary Prevention Strategy – a new step in
NSW’s approach to preventing DFSV.
The Government will also undertake
further long-term reform to prevent domestic,
sexual and family violence in NSW.
This work will be informed by the lived
experience of victim-survivors and expert
advice to government, including from leaders
in the domestic family and sexual violence
sector who engaged directly with the NSW
Cabinet last week.
“Too many lives have been lost and too
many families have been broken because of
domestic and family violence. It is a blight
in our communities, and it is a problem that
deserves our government’s concerted attention
and response,” Premier Chris Minns said.
“We are listening to leaders, organisations,
victim-survivors, and communities from
across NSW to drive solutions. Domestic,
family, and sexual violence is preventable; we
cannot accept the status quo.
“This funding announcement is an important
step to doing better, to recognising that
domestic violence supports need to be applied
not just from a crisis response perspective, but
with an eye to disrupting the cycle of domestic
and family violence early and permanently.”
The State Government will also soon
announce a plan to improve bail laws in New
South Wales.
Professor George Williams.
One of the nation’s most esteemed and
respected university leaders, Australian
constitutional law expert Professor
George Williams AO, has been named the
next Vice-Chancellor of Western Sydney
University.
Williams was appointed by the University’s
Board of Trustees as successor
to Professor Barney Glover AO, who
completed his term in April after more
than a decade of exemplary service.
Williams becomes the fifth Vice-Chancellor
in the University’s history and will
commence his term in mid-July.
“When the opportunity arose to lead
this University, I gave it everything I had
because I believe there is no university or
region in Australia with greater potential,”
Williams said.
“Western Sydney University and this
region are essential to the nation’s
economic and social growth.
“I am honoured to be appointed by the
Board of Trustees as Western Sydney
University’s next Vice-Chancellor. I am
proud to join a world-leading institution
that is delivering real-world impact when
it comes to teaching, research and innovation,
and is a formidable force for positive
social, environmental and economic
change – both locally and globally.
“I am inspired by the University’s longstanding
commitment to widening higher
education participation and its unique
position among the higher education
sector as an institution firmly anchored to
the Western Sydney region’s own remarkable
growth and development.”
Western Sydney University Chancellor,
Professor Jennifer Westacott AO, said
Williams is an exceptional candidate,
and impressed the Board of Trustees with
his clear commitment to the University,
his deep passion for the western Sydney
region and its potential, and his ambition
to take the University to the next level.
“Professor Williams deeply understood
the role our University will play in both
leading and supporting the transformation
of Western Sydney and ensuring it benefits
the community, particularly through the
impact of the airport and the huge growth
and opportunity currently underway,’’
Westacott said.
Currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor
Transformation, Planning and Assurance,
Anthony Mason Professor and Scientia
Professor at the University of New South
Wales (UNSW), Williams has forged
a highly distinguished career in law,
academia and Australian public life over
many decades.
“Western Sydney University’s mission
has a special resonance for me. I know
first-hand the transformative power of
education – I myself come from a modest
family background that had little experience
of higher education,” Williams said
this week.
LOCAL NEWS
Local and independent news
publishers gather in Port Douglas
Local and independent news
publishers gathered in Port
Douglas last week for the
second annual LINA Summit.
The Summit brings over 75
delegates together from across the
country, representing more than
50 news-making organisations and
industry stakeholders.
Among topics of the week were
sessions related to revenue and
sustainability for newsrooms,
audience trust and engagement,
public interest journalism, and
how journalists and publishers can
support their work by harnessing
new technology, including AI.
Parra News Managing Editor, Troy
Dodds, was among those at the
Summit.
“It’s been fantastic to hear a range
of new ideas, and to learn about a
range of initiatives available for our
industry,” he said.
“There’s a wide-ranging group at
the Summit – so there’s an opportunity
to learn from each other, and to
teach other as well.
“We will all be bringing great ideas
and initiatives back to our newsrooms.”
The 2024 LINA Summit comes as
LINA members during last week’s Summit in Port Douglas.
the government considers how best
to respond to the threat of rising
misinformation and disinformation,
and other recent developments
including Meta’s announcement
that they would not be renewing
deals with publishers made under
the news media bargaining code.
Last month LINA called on the
government to provide support to
small publishers which would be
disproportionately impacted should
Meta remove news publishers from
Facebook and Instagram.
In her opening address, Communications
Minister Michelle
Rowland thanked LINA and its
member publishers for their
submissions informing the government’s
approach to the News Media
Assistance Program (News MAP),
currently in development.
“I am focused on ways to enable
a diverse and sustainable media
landscape to support a strong and
healthy democracy. Local, hyper-local,
digital and independent news is
key to this,” Rowland said.
LINA Executive Director Claire
Stuchbery said the Summit, which
was co-hosted by Port Douglas’
local news service Newsport, is
an opportunity for publishers to
connect with one another while
workshopping new strategies and
receiving training and insights from
expert leaders in the media.
“It’s important that we support
news publishers through this turbulent
time of industry transition by
providing them with resources to
diversify income streams, connect
with new audiences, and continue
to produce high quality news within
their communities,” Stuchbery said.
“Local newsrooms play a critical
role delivering information and
connecting communities in a media
landscape that is becoming increasingly
impacted by news deserts and
content syndication.”
LINA is a not-for-profit industry
association established in 2021,
supporting local and independent
digital news. LINA’s goals are to
strengthen public interest journalism
and provide capacity-building
support, networking and services
for newsrooms.
HOROSCOPES
Relax & Unwind
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
With the Sun, New Moon, Venus, Jupiter
and your ruler Uranus visiting your
domestic zone, Home Sweet Home is
the place to be this week. Expect a fresh
start involving a relative, a renovation
or DIY project, a new home or an additional
family member. Or perhaps you’ll
receive some surprising news about a
pregnancy, engagement, marriage or
divorce! A financial matter looks solid, as
long as you’ve done your homework and
got a second opinion.
Have you been pandering to other
people Pisces? The Sun and Saturn
encourage you to stand strong and make
decisions that suit you. A current situation
has more flexible options than you
previously thought. Past mistakes can
be fixed, contracts can be cancelled, and
agreements can be broken. Your motto is
from birthday great, singer and activist
Bono, “The world is more malleable
than you think, and it’s waiting for you to
hammer it into shape.”
Have you been shopping up a storm
when you should have been saving
or paying off debt? Expect a financial
hiccup as the Sun, New Moon, Venus,
Jupiter and Uranus highlight money
matters (and also bring up issues involving
your personal values and self-esteem).
You’ll find the less you base your
core self-worth on money, status, image,
physical appearance and unrealistic
media expectations of what beauty is,
the happier and healthier you’ll be.
It’s time for Bulls to bewitch and
bewilder! With the Sun, New Moon,
Venus, Jupiter and Uranus all lighting
up your sign, your positive and negative
Taurean traits are boosted this week.
So expect to be more sensual, stable,
patient and dependable … and more
possessive, pedantic, slow-moving and
stubborn! Your motto for the moment is
from iconic Taurus actress (and birthday
great) Katharine Hepburn, “My greatest
strength is common sense.”
Communicating with others becomes
complicated and nuanced, as the New
Moon urges you to dig beneath the
surface and get to the bottom of an old
emotional issue. You’re also keen to
assist someone in need but resist the urge
to indulge in gratuitous gossip. Courtesy
of the Sun/Saturn link, Tuesday favours
being as disciplined and organised as
you possibly can. Whereas Wednesday is
all about escaping through the power of
your imagination.
Venus, Jupiter, Uranus and the New
Moon activate your hopes, dreams and
wishes zone, so divert your attention
away from current problems and draw
up a wish-list for the rest of 2024. Don’t
waste the opportunity to escape into
your imagination, set intentions and
dream ambitious dreams for the future.
The Sun and Saturn stimulate your travel
and education zone, so it’s important to
keep in touch with school mates, college
friends and/or international contacts.
L E O
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
V I R G O
AUGUST 24 TO SEPTEMBER 23
L I B R A
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
Your career is about to get a welcome
shot in the arm as Venus, Jupiter, Uranus
and the New Moon all barnstorm
through your work zone. So it’s time to
show your boss, colleagues and competitors
what you are truly capable of. With
an extra boost from the Sun/Saturn
link, it’s definitely time to be brave,
bold, organised and businesslike. Draw
inspiration from Hollywood movie star
(and birthday great) Katharine Hepburn,
“Without discipline, there’s no life at all.”
Most Virgos have very high expectations.
On Tuesday the Sun connects
with Saturn, which will amplify your
perfectionist streak. Which could lead to
unwanted stress when you have to deal
with New Moon changes, unfamiliar
situations and/or updated information.
You’ll discover that perfection is hard to
find! So your motto for the week is from
Spanish painter (and birthday great)
Salvador Dali, “Have no fear of perfection
… you’ll never reach it.”
Prosperity planets Venus and Jupiter
(plus Uranus and the New Moon) are
transiting through your ‘money-fromothers
zone’. So some lucky Librans will
benefit from an inheritance, gift, bonus,
divorce settlement, insurance claim,
bumper tax return or superannuation
pay-out. Make sure you spend any windfall
wisely, with a view to future financial
security. Mars and Mercury are in your
relationship zone, so be proactive about
communicating with others.
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
The Sun, New Moon, Venus, Jupiter
and Uranus are all transiting through
your partnership zone. So, when it comes
to relationships (of the romantic and
platonic variety) expect the unexpected!
But avoid being a stubborn Scorpio.
Instead, loosen up, go with the intuitive
flow, and keep your negative thoughts
to yourself. As Joni Mitchell (a fellow
Scorpio) observes, “There are things to
confess that enrich the world, and things
that need not be said.”
Sagittarians can be very scattered, but
this week the Sun, New Moon, Venus,
Jupiter (your power planet) and Uranus
are all transiting through the earthy,
steady sign of Taurus. So you will feel
more grounded, focused and settled
than usual. The mid-week New Moon
also suggests a fresh start involving work
or health as you commence a new job,
devise a more nutritious diet, or reboot
your fitness routine. Tuesday is terrific
for work matters and family functions.
The Sun makes a positive connection
with your ruler Saturn, so concentration
is high, your attention to detail is even
better than usual, and any work you do
will be of an extremely high standard.
Coupled Capricorn – it’s a wonderful
week to work on deepening the love and
commitment between the two of you.
If you are looking for lasting love, don’t
accept second best. Be discriminating,
as you patiently wait for the right person
to come along.
IN THE MIRROR with Cassidy Pearce
My verdict on the new, must-have
product known as Tubing Mascara
If you’re not using a tubing
mascara in 2024, what are
you doing?
Tubing mascaras, despite
looking exactly the same as
regular mascaras on the eyes,
wrap each individual lash in
water-resistant, tube-like polymers
rather than coating all
the lashes in pigment together.
This means that not only
are they smudge-free, they’re
also significantly easier to
remove, meaning for people
like me who dread taking their
makeup off at night solely
for this reason, they’re truly
life-changing.
If you’ve been looking to give
one a go, here are my thoughts
on some of the most popular
tubing mascaras on the market
right now.
Tarte Tartelette Tubing
Mascara
Retailing for $43 for 8mL,
the Tarte Tartelette Tubing
Mascara is described as being a
lash-extending 24-hour flakefree,
smudge-proof long-wear
mascara that creates a false
lash effect on the eyes.
THE VERDICT: I like this
mascara a lot. The shape of
the wand does an excellent
job at creating length and
volume without too many
coats. However, whilst this one
does wash off relatively easy, it
doesn’t come off in that traditional
tubing mascara style,
and is instead more comparable
with a traditional mascara.
Mecca Max Whip Lash
Tubing Mascara
Mecca Max’s Whip Lash
Tubing Mascara retails for $26,
making it the most affordable
of the bunch. This one has a
focus on lengthening, promising
to make your lashes longer
and longer with each coat.
THE VERDICT: Whilst it’s
not bad for the price, this one
definitely isn’t my favourite.
I find that it takes quite a few
coats to layer it up for my
desired look, however if you
wanted longer natural lashes,
this could be a good choice –
especially because it comes in
brown! I prefer Mecca Max’s
Wink Ink Super Mascara
which, although isn’t a tubing
mascara, I find comes off fairly
similarly to the Tarte option.
Clinique High Impact Zero
Gravity Mascara
Clinique’s High Impact Zero
Gravity Mascara is said to
instantly lift and curl lashes
by 50 per cent, and keep them
lifted for 24 hours. Retailing for
$53, it is the most expensive on
the list.
THE VERDICT: Initially,
I wasn’t really a fan of this
mascara. However, I do think
its performance has improved
with time as the formula has
dried out a little more. The
wand tends to struggle to grip
my lashes, meaning it takes
a while to build up. But, it
removes flawlessly with water.
Overall, I do think there are
better options for cheaper!
Velour Lashes Pretty Big
Deal Peptide & Tubing
Mascara
The Velour Lashes Pretty Big
Deal Peptide & Tubing Mascara
comes in at $40 for 9mL of
product. It’s described as a
3-in-1 lengthening mascara
infused with a peptide-packed
lash serum to deeply condition
and nourish lashes.
THE VERDICT: For me, this
mascara provides the perfect
happy medium. Though the
Tarte option beats out the look
of this one on the eyes slightly,
this one is easier to remove
with water, and $3 cheaper.
ENTERTAINMENT
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE –
PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
GRAND LAUGHS
AT NEW SHOW
CASSIDY PEARCE
Few Aussie actors have become
household names in the same way
as Lynne McGranger, who has appeared
in Channel Seven’s ‘Home
and Away’ as Irene Roberts for over
30 years.
However, when the opportunity arose to take
a break from the soap and jump into a new
project, she said there was no hesitation.
“When you’ve been doing something for 30-
odd years, it’s really exciting to do something
different,” she told Parra News.
“‘Home and Away’ will be there when I finish
up in mid-September and I go back, and I’m
sure I’ll be excited to rejoin the cast and see
my Summer Bay family.”
McGranger started off her career in theatre
back in the early ‘70s, performing in amateur
shows while she was teaching until becoming
involved in the Q Theatre and the Murray River
Performing Group before transitioning into
television.
Though she’s been loving her time on ‘Home
and Away’, she admits she’s been yearning to
go back to her roots in a fuller capacity for a
long time.
“I’ve been lucky enough over the years to do
pantomime in the UK – I’ve done that on and
off for 25-odd years – and that’s been wonderful,
but to do something like this which
is a bit more adult-based, even though it’s
family-friendly, and to be involved in workshopping
things too, and a bit of impro, is just
great,” she said.
“‘Home and Away’ is wonderful because
you’re living the life of the character you’re
playing, but you’re forever learning flippin’
lines! Whereas, when you’re doing a theatre
piece, it’s there. The only changes are the audiences
you get, and any bits of impro you have
on the night.”
Her new project, ‘The Grandparents Club’,
was brought to her by its writer Wendy Harmer,
who knew her from back in her early theatre
days.
As far as its genre goes, McGranger said it’s
important to note that ‘The Grandparents
Club’ is known as a comedy-musical, as opposed
to a musical-comedy.
“Think of the old-fashioned revues, so there’s
a bit of stand-up, there’s a few scenes, there’s
a bit of song and dance, there’s the odd monologue,”
she said.
Alongside Laurence Coy, Andrew James and
Meredith O’Reilly, the show will be telling the
story of those meeting up in the Grandparents
Club, sharing stories of their grandchildren
over bingo and trivia.
“You sit down and eat your schnitty and you
have your glass of Chardy and you talk about
your grandkids,” she said.
Though the show is geared towards grandparents,
McGranger said everyone is encouraged
to come along when the show makes its
way to Penrith next month.
“Hopefully people will recognise themselves
in parts of the show, particularly the grandparents
that come, but it’s family-friendly, so
we’re encouraging grandparents, and kids,
and grandkids, and even great-grandparents
to come and see it!” she said.
Promising a lot of laughs, fantastic music,
and plenty of familiar scenarios from the
show, McGranger said she’s hoping that those
buying their tickets are just as excited about
the new Australian musical as she is.
“I think because it is my grassroots, I feel very
comfortable on stage. I think I’d be more nervous
if I was cast in a full length film, because
I’d get bored so easily, and I’d be worried that
all the sitting around would make me bored,
but I don’t think there’ll be any room for boredom
in ‘The Grandparents Club’!” she said.
“It’s a 90-minute show, it’s non-stop, it’s exciting
and the rest of the cast are wonderful.”
‘The Grandparents Club’ will be on at the
EVAN Theatre in Penrith on Saturday, June
1 at 3pm and 7pm. Tickets are $64.80. To
COUNTRY
CORNER
Aldean drops new album
With 28 number one
singles, 17 billion streams
and 20 million albums sold,
reigning ACM Artist of the
Decade Jason Aldean has
released his highly anticipated
11th studio album,
‘Highway Desperado’.
The album also features
his current single ‘Let Your
Boys Be Country’.
Written by Allison Veltz
Cruz, Jaron Boyer, and
Micah Wilshire, ‘Let Your
Boys Be Country’ highlights
the simplicity and
innocence of childhood and
rural life.
Cash to release new
album
We lost the legendary
Johnny Cash in 2003,
but that doesn’t mean
we’re not getting new music
from the man in black.
‘Songwriter’, made from
previously unreleased in
1993 recordings, will be
coming out in June.
In early 1993, the Cash
found himself between
contracts in his then nearly
40-year career and recorded
an album’s worth of songwriting
demos at LSI Studios
in Nashville of songs he’d
written over many years.
LSI at the time was owned
by his son-in-law Mike
Daniels and daughter Rosey,
and he wanted to help the
family financially while
also recording some songs
special to him. Not long
after the fruitful session,
Cash met producer Rick
Rubin, and the recordings
were shelved as the two
embarked on an important
and prolific musical partnership
that revitalized the
Man in Black’s career that
would last the rest of his life.
Now, they’re coming to
life.
The 11-track collection
showcases the breadth of
his writing, one that has
always represented the
great expanse of the human
condition: there are songs of
love, family, sorrow, beauty,
spiritual salvation, survival,
redemption, and of course,
some of the lighthearted
humour Johnny was known
for, all sung in his unmistakable,
trademark, resonant
voice.
The album will be released
on June 28.
New top-line collab
Lee Brice, Nate Smith
and Hailey Whitters have
dropped ‘Drinkin’ Buddies’
to the streaming services.
“Cheers to all our Drinkin’
Buddies out there. Huge
thanks to Nate and Hailey
for bringing this thing all
the way home! Can’t wait for
y’all to hear this one!” Brice
said.
It’s available now.
At the movies...
REVIEW
The Fall Guy

2 hours, 5 minutes
Action comedy ‘The Fall
Guy’ is the perfect example
of a movie that asks its audience
to suspend reality
while still delivering a good
enough story.
Set in Sydney and boasting
an all-star cast including
Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt,
Hannah Waddingham and
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, ‘The
Fall Guy’ is a remake of a
1980s TV series of the same
name.
It follows stuntman Colt
Seaver (Gosling) as he gets
back into the movie industry
following an accident as he
tries to rekindle his romance
with director Jody (Blunt).
A producer brings Seaver
to Sydney to help find missing
action star, Tom Ryder
(Taylor-Johnson), who, before
his accident, Seaver was
performing stunts for.
As he searches for the
missing action star, Seaver
finds himself drugged in a
club and seeing unicorns
all the way to fighting in
the back of a garbage truck
across the Sydney Harbour
Bridge.
Despite the film’s clear
dismissal of reality, ‘The Fall
Guy’ delivers an enjoyable
125 minutes where Gosling
and Blunt’s natural charm
are the saving grace.
The over exaggerated action
throughout the film
feels like its a message itself
especially as director, David
Leitch, is a former stunt
performer turned director.
It feels like a round of applause
for all the hardworking
stunt men and women,
who help to make the movies
we see so magical.
While ‘The Fall Guy’ requires
a certain level of belief
suspension, it is an easy
way to spend two hours with
a few laughs.
Ê The new season of ‘Have You Been
Paying Attention?’ will kick off this Monday,
May 13 at 8.40pm on 10. Quizmaster Tom
Gleisner is ready and raring to discern the
funny from the facts, with rambunctious
Olympics and the US Election on the cards
for this year, you just know it’s going to be
another outrageously bonkers season!
Ê New ABC factual series ‘Tony Armstrong’s
added as they get slowly digitised.
Ê Funny UK reality star Charlotte Crosby
professional football club in the world, in a
working-class city in north Wales. The first
two episodes are now available to watch,
with the rest dropping weekly.
Ê Apple TV+ has renewed space drama ‘For
All Mankind’ for a fifth season. In further
paranoid thriller that takes us back to the
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
7 need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
5
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
8ts.com
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
MOTHER’S DAY GIFT GUIDE
Great local gift ideas for Mother’s Day
This Mother’s Day shop local
and show your mum how
much she means to you with
a gift she’ll never forget.
Sweet treats
Nothing quite says Happy Mother’s
Day like breakfast in bed, but
this year skip the soggy toast and the
instant coffee and instead treat your
mum to the brunch of her dreams.
Swing by Parramatta Square the
day before and pick up a box of
delicious pastries from Threefold
Pastry, or visit Westfield Parramatta
for a Cinnabon or two.
Support local businesses and
pick up a coffee and a treat from
Parramatta cafés like Homage
Specialty Coffee and Lucien
Baked Goods, or Darcy Street
Project in Epping.
For those whose mothers aren’t
exactly morning people or prefer
savoury to sweet, pick up a sandwich
from Harvey’s Hot Sandwiches
or a healthy lunch from Fishbowl in
Parramatta Square and head over to
Parramatta Park for a nice, relaxing
picnic.
Flowers
Show mum how much you care
with a beautiful bouquet of flowers
from one of the many talented local
florists.
Check out Parramatta Square’s
Royal Rose or Million Roses, which
delivers to a range of different
suburbs across the Parramatta
Local Government Area (LGA).
Want something that will last
forever? Get your mother some
unique pressed flower art from
Florapeutic in North Parramatta.
Day spa
A gift voucher can sometimes
be seen as the ‘lazy gift’, but every
mum will appreciate any opportunity
to pamper herself at one of the
local day spas.
Located at 31 Grose Street,
Parramatta, Moroccan Hamman
Day Spa is dedicated exclusively to
women and provides the ultimate
relaxation experience – perfect for
mums in desperate need of a ‘Me
Day’.
Face Body Day Spa
on Victoria Road,
Parramatta, is also
a great choice for
mum’s looking for a
total refresh. Popular
services include
facials, massages,
waxing, body
scrubs and
steam rooms.
Shop local
T h e
Parramatta LGA
has no shortage
of great shops, but if you really want
to get a gift that will stand out to
your mum check out all the quirky
local independent-owned stores.
There’s Aquarius Rising Bookshop,
which has been bringing
the new age alternative vibes to
the Parramatta scene since 1988.
Located diagonally across from
the Roxy Theatre, the shop sells
everything from crystals and
jewellery to journals and music for
relaxation.
Parramatta Clay and Arts Inc.
is perfect for those after a unique
gift for their mum, with some great
creations available to purchase as
well as plenty of workshops on offer
for those who have always had an
interest in getting their hands dirty
and making their own art.
And if your mum is a rugby league
supporter, you can never go past
Peter Wynn’s Score, which has
everything a sports fan could ever
need.
Goannas crush Centrals
Parramatta beat Werribee 134-0 on recent AFL development trip to Melbourne
NATHAN TAYLOR
Victorians live and breathe AFL, so
when a group of teenagers from the
Parramatta Goannas beat a local
Melbourne side 134-0 recently, it’s worth
writing about.
The incredible result happened just last
month when 21 Goannas Academy players
travelled to the Aussie Rules capital of the
world for a development trip.
Not only did the Goannas get to visit the
training bases of both Carlton and St Kilda,
but they also got to tour AFL House, the
Melbourne Cricket Ground and be on the
Marvel Stadium pitch for when the GWS
Giants ran out for their blockbuster Round 6
clash against the Blues.
“The purpose of the trip was to provide
further opportunities for developing aspiring
players across greater Sydney,” Goannas
President and Academy coach, Michael Bright
said.
“The footy experience in Melbourne
concluded what was an elite 10-week program
for the group that was designed to fast-track
their development prior to the junior AFL
season beginning.
“The key takeaways for the players were
memories and mates forever. Right from
the start they gelled as a group and that was
reflective across our trip and the level of footy
Parramatta Goannas Academy players loved their Melbourne trip.
that they played.”
The Goannas trained and played at such an
elite level during the trip, that they belted the
Werribee Centrals Junior Football Club in a
friendly match 134-0.
The sensational result was further proof that
young players from western Sydney are now
matching it with kids who have grown up with
the game of AFL in their backyard.
Goannas player Ruari Mercer said he loved
every bit of the unique experience down in
Melbourne.
“Marvel Stadium was probably my favourite
and the MCG my second favourite – it’s been
excellent,” he said.
“It’s top-level AFL… seeing Carlton’s headquarters
has shown it’s a bigger and better
experience down here.”
Bright said the four-day trip was a fulfilling
experience for all, and he hopes the players
take plenty of knowledge back to their junior
clubs.
The Parramatta Goannas forming a guard of honour for GWS.
“Players from the program represent five
clubs across greater Sydney, who will all
benefit from having their players a part of the
program,” he said.
“The priority is not only the growth of
the game in greater western Sydney from a
community perspective, but also to ensure
we are providing opportunities for aspiring
players to receive the highest level of coaching
available out of their traditional academy
programs.”
Wanderers celebrate night of nights
NATHAN TAYLOR
They may not have got the
results on the field, but that
hasn’t stopped the Western
Sydney Wanderers from celebrating
their season that was.
Last week they held their Wanderers
Medal – the club’s annual
awards night – at Doltone House in
Club Marconi.
After re-signing with the club last
month the good news kept rolling
for A-League Women’s star Danika
Matos, who was crowned the winner
of the prestigious Wanderers Medal.
A one-club player, Matos started
her professional career with the
Wanderers back in 2019 and has
Danika Matos accepts her medal.
Young gun Nicolas Milanovic cleaned up with three awards.
been a consistent part of the club’s
defence.
Also celebrating in style was
A-League Men’s captain Marcelo,
was announced as the male winner
of the coveted Wanderers Medal.
Marcelo, who played in his second
season with the club, has been an
important leader both on and off
the field and a driving force of the
Wanderers’ defence.
The night’s other winners
included Nicolas Milanovic and
Sophie Harding who, after standout
seasons for their respective sides,
were voted Members Players of the
Year Award winners thanks to the
thousands of votes from Wanderers
members.
Milanovic was also called up
Marcelo wins the Wanderers Medal.
alongside teammate Lachlan Brook
to collect the A-League Golden Boot
Award for most goals scored, while
Harding also returned to the stage
to pick up her second piece of silverware
for the A-League Women’s
Golden Boot Award.
For his third award of the evening,
Milanovic was voted the winner of
the Rod Allen Media Player of the
Year.
The Wanderers Powerchair Player
of the Year Award was presented to
Steve Webb, the club’s Wandercrew
Volunteer of the Year was awarded
to Matthew Squadrito, and The
Chairman’s Award for contribution
to the western Sydney community
was bestowed to Dr Tom Tutton.
Tutton has been working closely
with the Wanderers Foundation
and community teams to bring
to life a Sensory Friendly Space
at CommBank Stadium as well
as assist with the club’s football
clinics for children on the Autism
spectrum.
The Wanderers men’s team missed
out on Finals football by the skin of
their teeth, and the club will now
conduct a review on exactly what
stopped them from reaching the
post-season in consecutive seasons.
Mass changes are expected in the
coming months.
