HIS FAVOURITE SNAPS
FROM THIS SEASON...
shoots starting to come through for the future of Bristol City.
The Robins arrive at the bet365
Stadium unbeaten in their last
seven matches, winning four,
scoring 11 and conceding just
two in that time.
Whilst this end of season form
came too late to challenge for a
play-off place, it provides plenty
of optimism for a successful
campaign to come when
Manning puts his own stamp on
the squad during the summer
months.
Nigel Pearson started the season
in the Ashton Gate hotseat with
a mixed set of results coming in
the early rounds of the campaign
before the change of Head
Coach on October 29.
The Robins saw off Sheffield
Wednesday and secured a point
against QPR before Manning
was appointed on November
12, securing a 3-2 victory over
Middlesbrough in the first
Championship match of his
career.
Results thereafter continued
to fluctuate, with City securing
enough points to keep
themselves away from the bottom
three without testing the mettle
of the top six.
But with their end of season
form picking up, next year the
Robins could be a side to keep
an eye on.
This season’s earlier encounter
at Ashton Gate resulted in a
dramatic late victory for City after
Nathan Lowe netted his first goal
for the Club.
ast weekend, we secured fifth place in the
Women’s National League North table with a
resounding 5-0 victory over Fylde at Emerys
Stadium with a performance and result that
epitomised the progress we have made this season.
We finished 10th last season, so to see an
improvement of five places this time around
shows the progress we have made as a Club
over the course of the season and it gives us
plenty of optimism as we begin to think about
next season, following tomorrow’s final game
against Nottingham Forest.
We’re heading in the right direction; there’s no
doubt about that. The important thing now is
to keep looking forward and keep progressing
as a team.
It would be remiss of me not to thank those
who have supported us throughout the season.
Your support really does mean everything to
the group and to see you heading down to the
Emerys Stadium and beyond this season has
been a real source of joy for us all.
The important thing now is to round off the
season in a positive way against Nottingham
Forest tomorrow. Then rest up over the
summer and prepare to continue the strides
we have taken this season into next.
Have a good summer and enjoy the game.
Marie.
Liam Manning is in charge of the fourth club of his career
following his move to Ashton Gate in November 2023.
After his playing career came
to a premature end in 2010,
Manning turned his attention
to coaching, first taking charge
of West Ham United U23s in
2015 after spending time with
Ipswich Town’s Academy.
Following a spell with City
Football Group and New York
City, Manning’s first senior
management position came in
Belgium when he was named
Lemmel SK’s Head Coach
in July 2020. He guided the
Belgian side to third in his first
and only season in charge.
August 2021 saw the former
New York City Academy
Director return to England
to take charge of MK Dons,
guiding MK to third in his
Official Women’s Team Partner
first season, before a play-off
semi-final defeat to Wycombe
Wanderers denied Manning
a shot at promotion to the
Championship.
A slow start to the 22/23
campaign saw Manning
dismissed in December 2022,
though it wouldn’t be long
before he returned to the
dugout as, three months later,
Oxford United named Manning
as their Head Coach.
With the U’s second in League
One in November, the 38-yearold
departed the Kassam
Stadium to join Bristol City to
make the first step up to the
Championship of his coaching
career.
FROM THE HEAD COACH
steven schumacher
Good afternoon and welcome back to the bet365 Stadium for our
final fixture of the 2023/24 campaign against Bristol City.
We enter the last weekend of the season
on a run of form which has seen only five
teams collect more Championship points
in the past two months.
Such has been the strength of the
division, we have required a sequence
of results equivalent to play-off form
to secure our safety during the past
eleven matches.
The run has needed a strong collective
effort, and it is credit to the staff,
players and supporters who have come
together to get the job done.
It is an achievement to get out of
trouble in the circumstances, and it was
the primary objective for the remainder
of the season when we arrived, but we
won’t be over-celebrating. A relegation
battle is a position in which we are
determined not to find ourselves again.
Following the excellent win against
Plymouth Argyle in our previous home
fixture, I still felt we needed to control
our own business with a result against
a top Southampton team last weekend
and that proved to be the case.
We played with attacking intent, in a
way that chimes with how I want us to
look moving forward, and more than
warranted the three points. The only
disappointment was that we didn’t score
more with the chances we created.
It wasn’t the first time we have gone
toe-to-toe with a promotion-chasing
side. We won at both Preston North
End and Hull City and merited more
against Ipswich Town, Leeds United
and West Bromwich Albion too.
That tells me that, when the mentality
is right and we play to our potential,
we are a good team at this level, which
should give everyone reasons to be
optimistic for the future.
By getting our pre-season and
recruitment right this summer, I firmly
believe we will lay the foundations for a
much better season in 24/25.
We conclude the campaign against
Bristol City and I would like to welcome
their Head Coach Liam Manning, and
the players, staff and supporters who
have made the journey to the bet365
Stadium today.
My message to the lads straight after
last weekend’s win at St Mary’s was to
give everything to win three in a row
and finish this season with momentum.
The Robins have been in similarly good
form during the past two months and
will have the same objective.
It is important we have a strong
mentality from the outset to maintain our
performance levels and end on a high.
Finally, I would like to take the
opportunity to thank every Stoke City
supporter for your backing since I arrived
at the Club almost five months ago.
Your unwavering support here at the
bet365 Stadium has been matched by the
loud and proud fans who have travelled
the length and breadth of the country
in their numbers. For that, you have my
continued gratitude and appreciation.
Enjoy the game.
And now we can all
breathe…
What a football season this
has been and with the final
match of the season upon
us, Stoke City will be playing
in the second tier of English
football next season.
A smart finish from Tyrese
Campbell earned a well
deserved three points at
Southampton and sealed the
deal. The away supporters, as
has been the case all season,
were a huge credit, and
watched on as survival was
rubber-stamped, meaning
they could enjoy their
Saturday night.
From next week the planning
for the new season will
commence and that will be
another hectic period with
the football transfer rumour
mill in full effect. That part of
the football cycle feels like it
has its own life and for lots
of supporters it’s a fun time
guessing who’s coming and
who’s going.
I have enjoyed every minute
of every match in my first
season covering Stoke City
for BBC Radio Stoke. It’s
been a pleasure and to share
it with the listeners has been
a privilege.
All the summarisers I
have worked with helped me
expand my knowledge on
Stoke, the long and unique
history of the football club and
what it means to its supporters.
I can fill up two pages with
the amount of thank yous I
would like to say but here
goes with a few.
Jan, Emma, Melissa at the
press entrance, Joe and Jude
who work in the press room
on matchdays as well as all
the media chaps at the club.
The security chaps in the
tunnel who allow me to hang
around waiting to speak to
the management staff pre
and post-match.
Holly, a wonderful steward
(she splits her time
supporting Stoke & Chelsea -
I know I don’t get it too!).
Phil who always gets an away
team sheet out of me! Pete
Smith for being my very own
statistician.
Ozzie, Annie, Denise, and
Lauren who all sit below me at
home games and provide me
with chocolates (lucky me).
And finally, Kav, the young
man I met on December 23
home to Millwall and Head
Coach Steven Schumacher’s
first game in charge.
He has had a huge positive
effect on me. I wish him all
the best and if you do spot
him at home or away, check
out his red wheels. What a
chap Kav is.
Have a lovely summer and
see you all soon.
WITH THE SENTINEL’S PETE SMITH
here are final days and there are final days. Stoke have
T by and large done all right when they’ve signed off for a
season, winning 51 last games compared to losing 34, and some
wins have been pretty special even if there has been nothing
riding on the outcome.
On 13 occasions, Stoke have
ended term with a win by
at least three goals, most
recently when they won
4-1 at a behind closed doors
City Ground and scuppered
Nottingham Forest’s play-off
plans in the process back
in 2020.
Six of those times they
have won by four goals.
Adam Rooney scored a hattrick
in a 5-1 demolition of
Brighton and Hove Albion
back in 2006, which proved
to be Johan Boskamp’s last
game in charge. Mick Mills
oversaw a 5-1 thrashing of
Grimsby Town in 1987 and
top-flight safety was secured
with a 4-0 whipping of
Wolves in 1984, when Paul
Maguire got all four.
But only once have
they beaten a team by
five goals, hammering
Liverpool 6-1 here nine years
ago this month.
Tickets were changing hands
for hundreds of pounds as
Steven Gerrard prepared for
his 710th and final Liverpool
appearance on this day in
2015 at the then Britannia
Stadium. Gerrard scored
but in no other way did the
match go as he planned.
“I might have had a slightly
tight hamstring the night
before, but it was fine
during the match. We had
no excuses. It was just a
disaster,” Gerrard wrote
in his autobiography. “A
catastrophe. Everything
that could go wrong did go
wrong. We were 5-0 down at
half-time. Yes – wow.”
Mame Diouf scored two,
Jon Walters, Charlie Adam
and Steven Nzonzi added
others and Peter Crouch got
the sixth.
Mark Hughes later recalled:
He said: “We went into this
game, our last home game
of that season, and it was
still very much a game of
significance for us. We were
looking to get three points
that would take us to 54
points, which would be a
record Premier League total
for Stoke.
“For us there was very
much something on the
game. Maybe less so for
Liverpool, who finished
sixth, maybe – but really
apart from the fact it was
Stevie G’s last game I don’t
think they had much to play
for. That doesn’t denigrate
how well we did because on
the day we were excellent.”
Robins skipper Matty
James has chalked up
43 appearances for
Bristol City this season,
predominantly from the
start. Liam Manning’s side
have fared much better
with the former Leicester
matchday squad, with
only one three-point haul
coming when he has been
absent, that being the 1-0
victory over Swansea City
in early March. In total,
James has missed out on
six matchday squads, with
the Robins losing five of
those games.
The Robins’
undisputed number
one, Max O’Leary
all including five
in Bristol City’s last
ACADEMY NEWS
Good afternoon
and welcome
to the bet365
Stadium for the
final game of the
2023/24 season.
It has been a season of
change across the Football
Club, and the Academy
has been no different with
a number of personnel
changes across the
departments.
We have again achieved
some notable success
stories and events that will
live long in the memory.
There is no doubt that the
highlight was Nathan Lowe
scoring the winning goal
for the first team at Bristol
City, which reduced certain
staff members to tears, and
the outpouring of pride
from all of the Academy
staff was a joy to behold.
Sol Sidibe and Tommy
Simkin both making their
first team debuts were also
standout moments. To see
them develop as players
and people through the
Academy journey makes
their achievements
particularly rewarding.
We have had several
players achieve
international recognition
for their respective
countries with Jaden Dixon
adding to our crop of
young players representing
England only a few weeks
ago when he made his
debut for the Under-17s
against Northern Ireland.
Emre Tezgel has had a very
successful loan spell at MK
Dons, scoring and assisting
a number of goals in recent
weeks, and he gets the
chance to experience the
League Two play-offs in
the hope of achieving a
promotion on his CV at
such a young age.
David Okagbue and Matty
Baker have also had positive
experiences in the same
division at Walsall and
Newport County respectively,
which is testament to the
Academy’s mantra of
providing the best player
pathway and opportunities
for its young players.
Within the younger age
groups, there has also
been several highlights.
The Under-14s recently
reached the Albert Phelan
Shield final and will take on
Southampton a week today.
Our Under-10s reached the
final four of the Premier
League Futsal tournament
too, which was our best
finish to date.
The Under-17s also reached
the furthest round in our
history by reaching the
semi-finals of the Premier
League Cup, where they
narrowly lost 2-1 to Wolves.
All of the above goes
to prove we have good
players throughout Stoke
City Academy and it’s our
job to provide the best
pathway and opportunity in
the years to come.
Finally, I would like to
thank our owners and
the staff, players, parents
and supporters for their
continued support.
Our gratitude extends to the
wonderful support of our
Headline Academy sponsors,
Broxap, who we have been
delighted to collaborate with
on several projects, including
the recent Street Furniture
Challenge.
I hope you have all enjoyed
seeing the players wear the
red and white with pride
this season.
STOKE CiTY
WOMEN
Good afternoon and
welcome back to the
bet365 Stadium for
the final match of
the season.
ast weekend, we secured fifth place in the
Women’s National League North table with a
L resounding 5-0 victory over Fylde at Emerys
Stadium with a performance and result that
epitomised the progress we have made this season.
We finished 10th last season, so to see an
improvement of five places this time around
shows the progress we have made as a Club
over the course of the season and it gives us
plenty of optimism as we begin to think about
next season, following tomorrow’s final game
against Nottingham Forest.
We’re heading in the right direction; there’s no
doubt about that. The important thing now is
to keep looking forward and keep progressing
as a team.
It would be remiss of me not to thank those
who have supported us throughout the season.
Your support really does mean everything to
the group and to see you heading down to the
Emerys Stadium and beyond this season has
been a real source of joy for us all.
The important thing now is to round off the
season in a positive way against Nottingham
Forest tomorrow. Then rest up over the
summer and prepare to continue the strides
we have taken this season into next.
Have a good summer and enjoy the game.
IN THE
COMMUNITY
Stoke City Community Trust’s Ability Counts
U16s became league champions for the first
time recently, taking home the crown of the
Staffordshire FA Ability Counts League title
with a perfect 100% record from 20 matches.
Even more impressive was the fact that the
team did it without conceding a single goal.
For most of this team it was a new
experience and one they handled well. Craig
Lockett, Senior Coach, Disability
SEN (football and activities) said: “I’m
very proud of the achievement and of all
the support from coaches, parents and
players. We go again to see if we can get
more rewards for our efforts. Without the
assistance of Tony Liversage, who provided
extra training, along with parents to help
make the players stronger and more resilient
we would not have achieved our goals in
such a short period.”
We now start to plan for the 2024/25 season
and should you know of any young person
aged 6-16 with a disability, then get in
contact with the Stoke City Community Trust
by emailing craig.lockett@stokecityfc.com.
Massive congratulations on the win!
