GEOGRAPHY AND
ECONOMY
Alaska is not part of the
continguous USA – often
referred to as the ‘Lower 48’
– and its capital city, Juneau,
while on the mainland of the
continent, is not connected by
road to the rest of the North
American highway system.
It is bordered by Canada’s Yukon
and British Columbia to the
east, the Gulf of Alaska and
Pacific Ocean to the south and
southwest; the Bering Strait,
Bering Sea and Chuckchi Sea to
the west and the Arctic Ocean to
the north.
Its territorial waters even
touch those of Russia and Alaska
has a longer coastline than all
the other US states combined. It
is also far and away the largest
state in the US – being more
than twice of the size of the next
biggest, Texas.
While the oil and gas industry
dominate the Alaskan economy,
with more than 80 per cent of its
revenues derived from petroleum
extraction, its other main export
product is seafood, primarily
salmon, cod, pollock and crab,
while tourism also plays a
part in the region’s wealth and
employment, thanks to the many
fly fishing lodges, charter boats
and outdoor stores.
Every region of Alaska offers
accommodations that cater to
the needs of the angler, ranging
from rustic camping to allinclusive
luxury lodges and
everything in between.
Saltwater fishing charters are
extremely popular, with expert
captains offering everything
from salmon and halibut fishing
to chasing rockfish, cod and even
bass.
Alongside the substantial
freshwater fishing in Alaska‘s
pristine rivers and streams,
there are also some great ice
fishing opportunities as winter
arrives.
