Community
Uplifting the Next Generation of
Firefighters with Southwestern
College’s Basic Fire Academy
At San Diego Gas & Electric, our employees feel a strong sense of purpose beyond delivering clean,
safe and reliable energy services to our 3.7 million customers. As part of our commitment to
the communities we serve, we support a variety of initiatives through shareholder contributions,
employee giving programs, and volunteerism. Our philanthropic strategic priorities include: climate
action, emergency preparedness and safety, economic prosperity, and K-16 STEM. Many of our
initiatives focus on advancing racial and gender equity in alignment with our company value to “champion
people.” We understand that in order for our region to thrive and
become more sustainable, it is important for all of us to do our part
to ensure no one is left behind.
Southwestern College’s Basic Fire Academy
The Southwestern College (SWC) Fire
Science program is building the next
generation of firefighters through its
Basic Fire Academy in San Diego’s South
County. As the fire service industry
commits to increasing racial and gender
diversity throughout its ranks, SWC is
focused on improving the number of people of color and
women who enter its student body to properly reflect the
rich diversity of the communities they will serve. The Fire
Academy is a fully state-accredited fire training school that
provides the necessary education and hands-on experience
required for the State Fire Fighter 1 certification. Many
graduates have successfully received job offers from the
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department (SDFD), CAL FIRE
and the Chula Vista Fire Department (CVFD).
12 GBSAN.COM | MAY 2024

San Diego Gas &
Electric (SDG&E) and
SWC have partnered
up to encourage
a wider variety of
community members
to become professional
firefighters by
removing financial
barriers that may be
holding them back
from pursuing
higher education.
SDG&E’s Emergency
Preparedness
and Safety grant
initiative prioritizes
the safety of San
Diego by investing
in partnerships that
properly equip first
responders in the
face of increasing
climate and wildfire
threats. Through this
initiative, SDG&E
has supported
students like Lino
Pacheco. Lino is a
Chula Vista native
who graduated from
the Fire Academy
in May 2022 and
is now fulfilling his dream of being a firefighter at
the SDFD. Attending the academy was one of Lino’s
greatest experiences and he recognizes the immense
relief it was to have a scholarship that supported him
through his training. “Without it, I know myself and
some of the other recruits would have faced financial
hardships,” said Pacheco.
Diverse representation in leadership roles can provide
individuals with a sense of belonging as they embark on
their own careers. Lorraine Hutchison, director of the
SWC Fire Science program, continues to be an example
of the power of representation. Until her retirement
in 2015, Lorraine proudly served as the first African
American woman promoted to
engineer, captain, battalion chief,
and deputy chief at the SDFD.
Now her work at SWC continues
to be centered around recruiting
and training underrepresented
individuals to further enrich
the fire service industry. “By
purposefully broadening the
diversity of our firefighting
student body, we pave the way
for hiring agencies to access
a wider spectrum of skills
and perspectives in their
personnel,” said Hutchinson.
Throughout Lorraine’s
past and current roles,
she continues to amplify
the important role and
responsibility firefighters
hold. “Fire service individuals
are indispensable pillars
of community resilience
and safety, embodying the
ethos of service and sacrifice
that defines the firefighting
profession,” said Hutchinson.
“Beyond their response to
emergencies, fire service
individuals also contribute
to community outreach and
education efforts, promoting
fire prevention, safety awareness and preparedness
among residents.”
When entering the firefighting service, individuals
commit their lives to protecting others which is why
access to comprehensive training opportunities and
advanced equipment is vital to ensure they feel confident
in their abilities. A firefighter embodies the courage,
dedication and selflessness needed to risk their lives daily
for the sake of public safety. Through their partnership
with SDG&E, SWC is paving the way for the next
generation of firefighters.
Youth
Camp Connect
Camp Connect reunites brothers and
sisters who are separated and living
apart in foster care, and this is one
of the critical programs offered by
local nonprofit, Promises2Kids.
Through monthly visits,
group outings, and a
summer camp, siblings
have opportunities to
see one another and
maintain their bonds.
Promises2Kids is dedicated
to creating a brighter
future for foster children
in San Diego County,
by providing the hope,
support, and opportunities
they need to change their
lives for the better.
It was smiles as wide as
the silver screen for 49
children and 20 volunteers
who spent the day getting
lost in some of the most
memorable movies
at Universal Studios
Hollywood. There was
something to light up
every face. It was a day
filled with thrilling rides,
delicious treats, and reallife
characters.
For siblings Theo (6), Ash (9), and Alexis (10), it was
a big day that they had been looking forward to for
months. They entered care in 2022 due to severe abuse
and neglect. Unfortunately, they were placed in separate
placements and are living apart.
14 GBSAN.COM | MAY 2024
Camp Connect at
Universal Studios
The anticipation of waiting in lines for the rides was
almost too much to bear before Alexis suggested they
play “I Spy.” As they quickly focused on trying to
outsmart each other, the time flew by. Each had fun
guessing, and Ash groaned before laughing when the
object was revealed to be
right under his nose.
When it came time to
settle down on the bus ride
home, it was clear that
this was time well spent.
They had an entire section
to themselves to sprawl
out and reflect on a busy
day making memories
together. Alexis pulled up
video clips on her phone of
movies with the characters
they had met that day,
and while watching, Ash
let Theo borrow his jacket
because he was cold. Later,
they took turns taking
photos of each other with
Theo’s new Minions plush
on each of their heads. “I’ll
do it as long as you send
me the one of you, Alexis,”
Ash said.
As Promises2Kids often
finds at these big events,
every moment including
the little ones, are truly
cherished.
Thanks to the generous support of the community,
siblings like Theo, Ash, and Alexis, will have the
opportunity to reconnect again next month.
Mingei International
Welcomes New Chair
20 GBSAN.COM | MAY 2024
Jennifer Findley photographed in
the Founders Gallery at Mingei.

Jennifer Findley of JFiN
Collective will succeed
long time Mingei
International Museum
Trustee, and current Board
Chairman, Maureen (Mo)
King this July. Mo served
as Mingei’s Capital Campaign
chair for its $50 million dollar
transformational renovation,
which revealed an exciting and
beautifully transformed new
space in Balboa Park, in 2021.
Mo is now passing the torch as
Chairman to Jennifer.
Jennifer is an art advisor for and
founder of the JFiN Collective.
At the JFiN Collective, Jennifer
provides art advisory and
consulting services and helps
both established and emerging
collectors develop, create, and
maintain curated collections.
Jennifer is an avid Op-Art
collector, focusing her personal
collection on groundbreaking
artists from the 1960s such as
Bridget Riley and Yvaral. Before
founding the JFiN Collective,
Jennifer was a trademark and
copyright litigator working for
leading international social
media and fashion companies.
Through her journey, she has
learned the ins and outs of
curated art collections and
has developed strong relationships with the leading
galleries and auctions houses around the globe. She
works closely with both established as well as cuttingedge
artists and young creatives.
As a resident of La Jolla, Jennifer is a proud supporter
of the San Diego art and design community, and
has a special passion for Mingei. A founding board
member of Soho House San Diego, Jennifer serves on
numerous philanthropic boards, and navigates the art
Jennifer Findley with current Chairman,
Maureen King, in Mingei’s collections storage
Jennifer Findley with artist Yomar Augusto and
designer Justin Huelbig, in front of Augusto’s
large-scale, contemporary mural created for
the Over_Under exhibition at Mingei
world with her husband, Carl,
and their two young daughters,
Margot and Poppy. Jennifer
believes in exposing children
to the power of art, and her
daughters love attending Mini
Mingei art-making activities
and playing on the Nikigator at
Mingei.
In her new role, Jennifer will
bring together her passion for art
and design with Mingei’s mission
of sharing new perspectives on
folk art, craft, and design with
a growing audience. Jennifer
is excited about Mingei’s work
with living artists who share
fresh perspectives through the
traditional mediums of folk art
and craft. Contemporary work
has been highlighted in recent
commissions, the PIÑATAS
exhibition, and the coming
exhibition Blue Gold - The
Science and Art of Indigo, a
part of Getty’s Pacific Standard
Time initiative, which will
contain several new pieces
from contemporary artists and
craftspeople.
She is also passionate about
Mingei’s commitment to design.
Mingei founded San Diego
Design Week in 2020, which
played a key role in San Diego/
Tijuana successfully being named the 2024 World
Design Capital. As Chairman, Jennifer is excited to
create new connections between the Museum and the
greater San Diego arts and design community.
Mo will continue to serve on Mingei’s board of
directors as Chairman Emerita and is thrilled for
Jennifer to serve as Chairman as Mingei carries
forward exciting plans for innovative exhibitions and
events in our region.
About San Diego
THE STAR OF THE SHOW
BY KEN KRAMER
The Star of India
aboard San Diego’s iconic 160-year-old sailing ship the Star of India,
fully crewed on this bright November afternoon and every bit as
glorious and poised at sea as when she was launched five days before
Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address in 1863.
Then known as Euterpe
Some experiences are
so uncommon and
purely exhilarating,
you wonder if at
that moment there is
anything happening
on earth to match it.
We had been invited
Maritime Museum volunteers train all year for this. Some of the
bravest scramble up the masts to unfurl the sails which quickly catch
the ocean breeze. Every deckhand is part of a precise and marvelous
choreography.
Beyond Point Loma, we can take best advantage of the wind, and a
lovely quiet settles over the ship. It truly feels like the Star of India
is back in her element. A small bell is rung, summoning passengers
and crew to a brief memorial ceremony for Museum members who
have recently passed. Their names are called and single roses are
tossed into the sea.
and it seems wise to stay out of the way.
A band plays old songs of the sea, and a
few guests begin to clap and dance. The
ocean, the sounds, the history of it all,
combine to create a setting that is simply
incomparable.
In late afternoon, The Star of India turns
back toward the embarcadero. Charter
boats and private yachts form a kind
of honor guard alongside, tourists and
sightseers aboard them strain to snap the
perfect photo at the golden hour before
sunset. It has been a truly magnificent day!
As seen through the lens of videographers
Suzanne Bartole and Zach Camerino,
it will be a joy to share our Star of
India experience with you as part of an
upcoming episode of Ken Kramer’s About
San Diego, Thursday evening, May 9 at
8:00 on KPBS-TV, repeating Sunday May
12 at 4:00.
San Diego Maritime Museum volunteer crew
members prepare to unfurl sails as the Star
of India departs its berth along Harbor Drive.
Now the world’s oldest active sailing ship,
the Star of India can boast a remarkable
history. Operating under the name Euterpe,
after the Greek muse of poetry and music,
her first voyages were less than stellar. She
endured a collision, a fierce hurricane,
illness among the passengers and crew, and
a mutiny aboard. Then the captain died
and was buried at sea. For decades, Euterpe
earned her way hauling cargo from England
to India, emigrants to New Zealand and,
under her new name, salmon from Alaska
to California. In all, she circled the world
21 times and remains the oldest iron-hulled
merchant ship afloat.
On board today, the sails flap briefly, and
in response to a shouted command, the allvolunteer
crew instantly grabs ropes to tighten
them. They know exactly what they are doing,
Roses are tossed into the sea as
part of a memorial ceremony while
sailing aboard the Star of India.
Ken Kramer is creator and host of Ken
Kramer’s About San Diego on KPBS-TV,
a weekly variety show of stories about
the history and people of our county. His
a part of San Diego’s media landscape
for more the four decades. He graduated
Sharp HealthCare
LEADING THROUGH INNOVATION
Sharp Ventures launch
event in April 2023
In April 2024, Sharp HealthCare celebrated
the first anniversary of the Sharp Prebys
Innovation and Education Center
(SPIEC). This extraordinary new facility
serves as a hub for not only Sharp, but also the
broader San Diego community. More than 100
events, training programs, conferences and
seminars have been held at the center to date. Sharp
welcomes community organizations to consider the
SPIEC for hosting meetings and conferences.
The opening of the SPIEC also marked the launch
of Sharp’s Innovation Initiative, heralding San
Diego’s largest health care provider as a leading
nonacademic health system paving the way for the
transformation of care.
Within the SPIEC, the James S. Cox Technology
Immersion Lab serves as the hub of innovation
and idea development. Here, researchers, clinicians
and technologists partner to explore advanced
technologies, including artificial intelligence,
software development, machine learning, advanced
analytics and more - all with the aim of improving
health care delivery and enhancing patient outcomes.
The lab was designed to showcase state-of-the art
technology to expand The Sharp Experience.
Sharp A3 Institute
Sharp Ventures
Another major milestone of Sharp’s Innovation
Initiative was the launch of a formal innovation
program, Sharp Ventures. The goal of Sharp Ventures
is to advance health care innovation through the
incubation and commercialization of new ideas with
leading industry partners.
The challenges of health care are complex, so identifying
the right partners and cultivating a culture of innovation
are critical. With Sharp Ventures, innovators from around
the country can work side by side with key leaders at
Sharp in the development, testing and deployment of
fresh ideas.
The Sharp Advanced Analytics and Artificial
Intelligence (A3) Institute
The health care industry continues to experience rapid
transformation, and no change is more imminent than
the potential for artificial intelligence (AI). In response,
Sharp Ventures is launching the Sharp A3 Institute to
further explore how AI can improve care. Through the
institute, Sharp will:
Deploy best-in-class technology at scale to maximize the
impact of AI in clinical and administrative settings.
Serve as a regional hub to better understand the impact
of AI on health care from the perspectives of patients,
providers and the community.
Transform health care delivery through the creation of
commercial products and services to serve San Diego
and beyond.
The institute will invest directly with early-stage
companies that align with Sharp’s core strengths, notably
in data analytics and digital health, and aims to establish
an endowed innovation fund for opportunities focused on
balancing the potential of AI and the delivery of health care.
Foundation, private and venture philanthropy will
play a key role in helping bring the institute to life.
The ENVISION campaign will support the growth,
development and operation of the institute, the
Sharp A3 early-stage investment program, software
development, research, and the creation and growth of
an endowed innovation fund.
DREW MOSER
LEADING WITH THE HEART
BY: NICHOLE NAOUM
Drew Moser with Peter
Seidler and friends
Drew Moser wears many hats - CEO
of the Lucky Duck Foundation,
dedicated family man, sports
enthusiast, and community
advocate. His involvement with
the Lucky Duck Foundation began
with a deep admiration for its board
members, whom he describes as the embodiment of
teamwork and dedication.
Drew’s journey with the Lucky Duck Foundation
began with a simple yet profound realization
revolving around the power of teamwork. Inspired
by the dedication of the foundation’s board members,
including the late Peter Seidler, Dan Shea, and cofounders
Pat and Stephanie Kilkenny, Drew saw
an opportunity to make a real impact. “Teamwork
was instilled in me at a young age, and I saw it as
the ultimate teamwork situation of working with a
multitude of entities to address San Diego’s most
pressing issue while working with and for the most
generous, caring, and humble people in Lucky Duck
Foundation’s board of directors,” Drew shared.
30 GBSAN.COM | MAY 2024

Under Drew’s
leadership, the Lucky
Duck Foundation
has implemented
several successful
initiatives and
programs to address
homelessness. From
funding immediate
shelter beds to
supporting residential
detox programs, the
foundation is focused
on providing tangible
solutions for those
in need. Drew’s
approach is simple yet
effective - apply sound
business principles,
collaboration, and a bias
for action to fund and
implement strategies that
are humane, timely, and
cost-effective.
In Sept. 2023, Lucky Duck Foundation announced a
$500,000 investment to launch its “Seniors Safe at Home”
homelessness prevention and employment program
Looking ahead, the Lucky
Duck Foundation has
exciting events lined up
including the Showcase
Soiree on September 12th
at the Sound in Del Mar.
These events not only raise
funds but also provide
opportunities for the
community to come together
and support the cause. “The
support we receive from the community is overwhelming. It is a
testament to the generosity and compassion of the people of San
Diego,” Drew noted.
In May 2023, the Lucky Duck Foundation & Rolf
Benirschke Legacy Foundation launched the Timmy’s
Place pizzeria and print shop to employ homeless youth
When asked about the challenges facing San Diego, Drew pointed
to the lack of adequate shelter and residential detox beds. He
stressed the importance of providing immediate solutions while
also working towards long-term housing goals. He added, “We are
focused on the here and now and providing an immediate pathway
off the streets coupled with appropriate supportive services to help
people put homelessness behind them once and for all.”
Outside of his work with the foundation,
Drew enjoys spending time with his
family, coaching his kids’ sports teams,
and cheering them on from the sidelines.
His passion for making a difference in the
community is evident in everything he
does, both professionally and personally.
Drew Moser is not your typical CEO.
He is a leader, a mentor, and a beacon of
hope for those in need.
University of San Diego
SENDING FORTH THE CHANGEMAKERS
BY RYAN BLYSTONE
University of San Diego
For a few thousand University of San
Diego (USD) students, a significant life
chapter is reaching its crescendo in May
- graduation! And, secondly, but quite
importantly, a graduation ceremony
enjoyed with family and friends. Lots
of pictures and videos will follow with
smiles and happy tears in abundance.
The class of 2024 graduates during the 75th
anniversary year of the University’s founding, eager
to celebrate in person and to walk across the stage
as they hear their name called. For undergraduate
degree recipients who would have been 2020 high
school seniors, most, if not all, have not had a proper
ceremony since their festivities were canceled or
greatly altered due to the Covid-19 pandemic four
years ago.
The newest Torero alumni will raise the university’s
overall total to 80,000 with representation in all 50 U.S.
states and more than 100 countries – with most living
in California and the San Diego region. They reflect
the growing diversity of USD’s student population,
which includes being a Hispanic-Serving Institution,
having strong female representation in the sciences,
engineering and all STEM disciplines, and helping
military-connected men and women add a degree to
their already impressive skill set.
Why do students attend USD, a private, independent
Catholic university whose curriculum is grounded
in the liberal arts tradition? What inspires them to
take action as their knowledge, faith and passion help
define their career path? Some reasons include: a
quality facultystudent
ratio;
experiential
learning;
study abroad;
collaborative
research;
joining a club or
organization to
build community
connections;
participate in
community
service learning;
and to be in
beautiful in
the nation by
President James T. Harris
Above all,
USD students
become true
Changemakers
in the
community
and the
region. Their
experiences
bring them
to local
businesses, nonprofit organizations or to government
service. It can even propel a student to go where no
other Torero has gone before - Michael Dominick
’05 (BS/BA Engineering) made USD history as
commander of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-8’s mission into
space earlier this year.
University co-founder Mother Hill spoke eloquently
about beauty, goodness and truth and its connection
to education.
Ninth-year USD
President James
T. Harris, III,
DEd, agrees, and
enjoys what he
sees, too.
“I think we
are living out
our mission
and we try to
do that every
day,” Harris
shared with
“People are
LEGAL COMMUNITY INVITED TO HELP END CHILD HUNGER
E
nding hunger is a
community effort, and
Feeding San Diego
is inviting the local
legal community to
approach the bench. This summer, legal professionals
can support critical hunger-relief programs by being
a part of Food from the Bar. This friendly fundraising
competition for legal professionals is now in its 12th
year and provides an opportunity for the local legal
community to give back.
During the month-long campaign, legal teams compete
to raise funds, volunteer, and host food drives for
Feeding San Diego’s programs that support children
facing hunger. The campaign kicks off on June 1st and
Frank J. Johnson
Feeding San Diego is
looking for additional
participants to join
and help meet the
fundraising goal of
$100,000. A team
can be a law firm,
insurance company,
legal staffing agency,
legal association, or
even an individual
legal professional.
During the summer
months, nearly
half of San Diego County students will lose access
to nutritious meals that they rely on while in school.
When school lets out for summer, kids who rely on
free and reduced-price meals can’t access them and
parents must suddenly provide three meals a day.
Inflation continues to negatively impact household
budgets, and food budgets simply don’t stretch as
far or buy as much as last year. According to Feeding
America, there are more than 100,000 children in San
Diego County who experience food insecurity. Many
families rely on Feeding San Diego’s programs during
BREAKING THE POVERTY CYCLE BY
EMPOWERING YOUNG PEOPLE
Ignite students at Barona
The San Diego Automotive Museum
(SDAM) is reintroducing the IGNITE
Academy, a transformative educational
experience that aims to Inspire, Guide,
Network, provide Internships, Train,
and Educate students in the automotive
industry. The Academy focuses on
developing skills and providing industry-relevant
training while also offering mentorship, financial literacy,
and assistance with job placement through internships.
IGNITE’s ultimate goal is to break the poverty cycle
by empowering young people to pursue careers in the
automotive sector and make a positive contribution to
their communities and society.
To boost the Academy’s growth and success, the
Apprenticeship Volunteer Committee was created and
spearheaded by Stephen F. Hamilton, a distinguished
professor emeritus at Cornell University. In addition to
several youth and apprenticeship publications, Stephen
spent a few years at Mercedes Benz in Germany, studying
their apprenticeship program, which began in 1890. Steve
examined their program and brought his knowledge back
to America, participating on a committee of like-minded
individuals who created a curriculum and advised
the Department of Education on executing successful
apprenticeships for youth. Together, the committee
set the framework for state- and federally-funded
apprenticeship programs. The SDAM Apprenticeship
Committee partnered with the Mercedes Benz
Apprenticeship Program at Mercedes-Benz of Carlsbad,
owned by Hoehn Family Motors, one of the Academy
partners. The Academy is making remarkable progress,
thanks to Steven’s dedicated contributions.
CHAMPIONS
FOR HEALTH
WHEN EVEN A HUG HURTS…
BY ADAMA DYONIZIAK, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CHAMPIONS FOR HEALTH
Rheumatologist Dr. Rashad Ansari
As the mother of a son in remission
from leukemia, Karla was a fierce
advocate for her son, and was present
when he rang the bell to celebrate the
completion of treatment. However,
advocating for herself was a different
story. Karla was feeling pain and
swelling in her hands and legs since 2019, but she
always thought that in comparison to her son, her pain
was nothing.
It was not until 2021, when treatment for her son
was completed, that she realized that the emotional
relief she felt did not lead to physical relief. “I thought
64 GBSAN.COM | MAY 2024

everything bad that
I felt was because
of stress – I had a
lot of swelling and
redness moving up
my legs.” Karla says
her legs looked
like she had red
boots on, with
continuous pain
and easy bruising.
“If I hit myself on
something that
would cause quite a
bit of pain. Even a
hug would hurt... a
hug from my daughter at one
time felt like someone hitting
me with a hammer.”
One physician recommended
ibuprofen, which did not
help. Karla was feeling more
and more desperate and saw
another physician with whom
she shared that her mother was
diagnosed with rheumatoid
arthritis. Additional tests
confirmed inflammation and
arthritis. She was so happy to
have a doctor who listened to
her and respected her.
Since Karla was uninsured,
she was referred to Project
Access at Champions for
Health for her specialty
care appointment with a
volunteer rheumatologist.
Karla recalls Evelyn from
Project Access securing transportation assistance and
medical interpreting for her appointments. “With Ms.
Evelyn, she made me feel like part of the family, very
comfortable.”
Karla M Project Access patient
Karla says she was blessed to meet not only Dr. Rashad
Ansari, the Project Access volunteer rheumatologist,
but also the amazing team at his office. Karla was
Evelyn Penaloza from Project Access
nervous about
her treatment,
but “when I met
with Dr. Ansari,
he is so busy,
but he is always
so kind.” Dr.
Ansari, who has
volunteered his
services for 20
years with Vista
Community
Clinic and now
with Champions
for Health, adds,
“The best thing
about being a physician is
helping people lead lives
with less pain. You learn
more from listening to
people than talking to them.
I ask questions and just listen
as long as it takes to make
sure that I help them.”
Karla had tears in her
eyes as she shared
about the compassion
and commitment of Dr.
Ansari and his team who
stayed after hours for
her consultation when
the freeway between her
home and the office was so
flooded that it collapsed,
making driving impossible.
“My deepest respect is for
the doctor. It is like he feels
what I feel. I appreciate it
so much. Becoming his patient was the best thing
that has happened to me.”
Since 2008, Project Access has facilitated $27 million
in care for 9,600+ uninsured patients just like Karla
by providing free consultations and surgeries. Open
doors for a Project Access patient so that they can
Community
Building a Vibrant Jewish Future
A COMMITMENT TO LEADERSHIP, RESILIENCE, AND UNITY
Hundreds gather for annual
Federation360 fundraiser
The San Diego Jewish community stands
at a generationally defining moment
as it grapples with both internal and
external forces shaping its future. As May
commemorates Jewish Heritage Month,
it is a time to reflect on the journey ahead
and the collective efforts required to
ensure a vibrant Jewish future.
The tragic events of October 7 in Israel have triggered
new, more violent antisemitism, threatening Jewish
communities worldwide. In fact, the American Jewish
Committee recently found that antisemitic incidents
have surged by an alarming 400% across the nation,
permeating the public sector with harmful rhetoric and
actions ranging from slander to physical assault.
The Role of Leadership in Navigating Uncertainty
Now more than ever, strong leadership is essential in
navigating the complexities of the times. Recognizing
the urgent need for action, the Jewish Federation of San
Diego has doubled down on its commitment to cultivate
a new generation of communal leaders equipped with the
skills and knowledge needed to confront the challenges
ahead while also strengthening today’s leaders.
Through leadership development programs like the
Courageous Leadership Initiative, the Teen Peer Leaders
Fellowship, the Pauline Foster Women’s Leadership
Institute, and many others, Federation is investing in
Jewish leadership at all levels. These programs not only
enhance competencies but also foster a sense of shared
66 GBSAN.COM | MAY 2024

identity and
purpose. Many
participants in
these programs are
engaged leaders
both in the Jewish
community and
the broader San
Diego community.
Combatting
Antisemitism
and Enhancing
Community
Security
Federation President & CEO Heidi Gantwerk Speaks
at Local Conference on Combatting Antisemitism
Jewish communal leaders participate in
Federation’s Courageous Leadership Initiative
By partnering
with organizations like the Secure Community Network,
Federation has bolstered local community security
efforts, ensuring that Jewish institutions remain safe
and welcoming spaces to engage with Jewish life.
Working closely with Jewish institutional leadership,
Federation provides free trainings, assessments,
ongoing communication, consultation on federal grant
applications, general security-related advice, and more
- all designed to equip the community with the tools
needed to prepare for and respond to security challenges
as they arise.
Additionally, Federation is spearheading communitywide
initiatives to coordinate responses to antisemitism.
This includes the Antisemitism Roundtable, which
was first convened in early 2023 and continues
to serve as a communal space for organizations
addressing antisemitism to engage in information
sharing, identify opportunities and challenges, and
develop relationships to strengthen the community’s
approach to combating antisemitism.
Looking Ahead: A Unified Vision for the Future
Through these efforts and more, Federation seeks
to promote advocacy and education while fostering
a nuanced understanding of modern Jewish life,
San Diego’s connections to Israel, and the increased
challenges faced by the Jewish people. Despite
these challenges,
participation in
Jewish life is at
an all-time high,
highlighting the
resilience and
determination of
the community.
Federation
remains
committed to
providing fun and
engaging Jewish
experiences that
build community
and strengthen
identity,
recognizing their
vital role in maintaining cultural heritage and unity.
None of this work would be possible without the
unwavering support and generosity of the San
Diego community. Philanthropy plays a crucial
role in sustaining programs that empower future
leaders, enhance safety, and combat antisemitism. By
supporting Federation, donors contribute to building
a stronger, more connected Jewish community for
generations to come.
ensuring lasting, vibrant Jewish life in San Diego and
The Heartbeat of
Father Joe’s Villages
Father Joes Villages
Father Joe’s Villages owes its existence
and continued success to the selfless
dedication of community members who
transform their care and concern into
meaningful action. For nearly 75 years,
our organization has been sustained by
the unwavering support of thousands
of volunteers, whose contributions make our work
possible. In 2023 alone, over 5,200 volunteers
generously devoted more than 52,000 hours of their
time and talent to our cause.
These volunteers undertake a myriad of tasks, from
meal preparation and service in our two kitchens, to
conducting art classes, organizing events for children
and families, providing haircuts, and spearheading
drives to collect essential items like blankets and
diapers. Their impact resonates deeply within the
fabric of our community, touching the lives of those we
serve in profound ways.
At Father Joe’s Villages, we recognize that every
volunteer and every hour they dedicate is invaluable.
Their commitment leaves an indelible mark on the
lives of individuals experiencing homelessness, helping
to pave the way towards a brighter future for them.
We extend a warm invitation to individuals and
groups from all walks of life to join us in our mission.
Whether you are an individual, a family, a religious
organization, a community group, a military unit, a
corporation, or a local business, there is a place for
you at Father Joe’s Villages.
Food 4 Kids Backpack Program at Edison
Elementary School in City Heights

A
backpack is an important school supply
for any student. A backpack holds
a student’s textbooks, pencils and
notebooks. For some students in the
community, it also carries the food they
receive through the Jacobs & Cushman
San Diego Food Bank’s Food 4 Kids
Backpack Program every Friday to take home at the end
of the school week.
The Food 4 Kids Backpack Program, which was created
in 2006,
provides
weekend
food
packages to
chronically
hungry
elementary
school
students from
low-income
households
who are
at risk of
hunger over
the weekend
when free
Food 4 Kids Back Program
school
meals are
unavailable. The program, which began with 60 students
in its first year, is currently supplementing the nutritional
needs of 3,500 students at more than 80 elementary
schools in 19 school districts in San Diego County.
Principals, teachers, social workers, and guidance
counselors who help run the program at their respective
schools look for subtle clues to help identify children
they believe could benefit from the program. “When we
notice that children are trying to save extra food in the
lunch line, we immediately reach out and ask how we can
support,” shares Monica Martin, a counselor at Encanto
Elementary School.
The answer in many cases is the Food 4 Kids Backpack
Program. Every Friday afternoon before heading home,
students enrolled in the program pick up their weekend
food pack filled with nutritious, kid-friendly food placed
securely in their backpacks by staff. These food packs are
put together every week by dozens of volunteers at the
Food Bank’s North County warehouse in Vista. By the
end of the current 2023-2024 school year, volunteers will
have packed approximately 120,000 food bags.
In addition to receiving food for themselves, the students
are also given an additional “family pack” once a month,
which includes a selection of meal-based food items like
pastas and beans for the student to share and cook with
their family. With the establishment of this program,
the Food
Bank is able
to help fill a
nutritional
gap local
schools could
not easily
address on
their own.
“The Food
4 Kids
Backpack
Program is a
hunger-relief
program, but
it is more than
just simply
feeding these
kids who
are at or near the poverty line. This is an investment
deeply rooted in giving our future generations the proper
nutrition they need outside of school hours in hopes of
setting them up for future success,” Casey Castillo, CEO
of the Food Bank shared with GB Magazine.
The expansion of this program over the years has been
made possible because of the support of the Food Bank’s
generous donors. Hundreds of students have been taken
off waiting lists and added to the program, but many
more children are still waiting for their turn to have their
backpack filled with a bag of food on Friday to nourish
them over the weekend.
STEP
EXPANDING FOR THE FUTURE
STEP Building
Each year, approximately 150,000 young
people between the ages of 18 and 24
make a noble commitment by enlisting
in the armed forces. These brave
individuals, along with their families,
face high expenses and low pay combined
with the struggles of deployment,
frequent moves, spouse unemployment, and childcare
shortages. Most of these families, like many other
families in America, have little knowledge of personal
financial management, so even small life problems -
like the family car breaking down - can cause a spiral
to financial crisis.
Support the Enlisted Project (STEP) was created 11
years ago by a group of Veterans driven by a mission
to create a solution to help our young military and
Veteran families solve a problem that plagues most
Americans: poor financial habits. Thanks to STEP,
military families work one-on-one with a social worker
certified in personal financial counseling to not only
provide financial assistance in a crisis, but also to
equip families with the education and tools necessary
to establish and achieve long-term financial goals.
Headquartered in San Diego, STEP offers specialized
case management, financial education, and emergency
financial support for young military families in
eight counties throughout Southern California.
Recently, STEP expanded its services to Washington
State, extending support to 20% of military families
across the nation. Additionally, STEP hosts monthly
distribution events providing essential items such as
food, diapers, hygiene products, and more to military
personnel, Veterans, reservists, members of the
National Guard, and their families.
Amidst its highest caseload in history, STEP is reaching
out to the community for financial support to build
its capacity to meet the escalating demand. The STEP
Capacity Building Campaign, publicly announced
in 2023, aims to raise $6.5 million in donations. These
funds will enable the organization to increase the
number of social workers allowing them to serve more
clients monthly, increase the emergency financial
assistance funds, secure a property accessible for all
clients, and provide adequate warehouse space for
stationed, the cost of living here
makes it difficult for youngenlisted
meet which can create a host
of financial problems. STEP’s
one-on-one financial counseling,
along with providing funds for
unexpected emergencies makes
their services invaluable. With
the recent influx of military
families moving to San Diego,
STEP needs to expand so that it
monthly distributions. The campaign goal is ambitious,
but the community response has been overwhelmingly
supportive with commitments exceeding $4.2 million to
date. Thanks to a partnership with the Walter J. & Betty
C. Zable Foundation, all gifts made to the Capacity
Building Campaign will be matched up to $1 million,
helping STEP reach
their goal.
Kim Koch, Chief
Operating Officer
of the David C.
Copley Foundation
emphasized the
foundation’s
commitment to
supporting STEP’s
vital mission. “The
to support STEP’s
Campaign. While
San Diego County is
STEP’s unwavering dedication to
supporting military families in
financial distress underscores the
critical role it plays in alleviating
the burdens faced by those who
serve our country. Through
community support and strategic partnerships, STEP
continues to expand its reach and impact, ensuring
that our nation’s heroes and their families receive the
support they deserve.
