Diego Perez Palomino is making a name for himself among high school journalism students across the St. Louis region. After attending a conference last summer at Mizzou, Palomino, a Parkway Central High junior, was inspired to create a place for area student journalists to share their work with each other. The goal is to help students see how different local schools are covering the news in their community. Seeing this as a gap to fill, Palomino created an online magazine called 314 In Focus where any journalism student can post their stories that were published in their school newspapers. “I know at my high school we have (our student newspaper) The Corral, and within The Corral, it’s just us,” Palomino said. “Sometimes (the newspaper staff) would just want to look at other high schools for inspiration and it was kind of difficult to see how other schools were writing because we would be looking at each one individually online. So I wanted to create something like Netflix and have one place where you can find a variety of different things without having to be looking around everywhere at each school’s website.” Palomino said students from Parkway Central, Parkway West, Parkway North, Kirkwood, Ladue Horton Watkins, Nerinx Hall, Webster Groves, Troy Buchanan and University City high schools have each contributed to 314 In Focus. But the ambition didn’t stop there. After attending another conference, the Missouri Interscholastic Journalism Association’s J Day for journalism students, Palomino wanted to host his own conference for high school students in the St. Louis area who are interested in pursuing a career in journalism. With the support of his journalism advisor, Christine Stricker, and fellow Parkway West journalism student Ruthvi Tadakamalla, the 314 Media Day conference began to take shape. Scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on May 21 at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park, 314 Media Day is free for anyone to attend, and features a lineup of speakers on different topics, including Toriano Porter, a St. Louis native and journalist on the editorial board of The Kansas City Star. Also featured are Parkway West journalism students Elizabeth Franklin, Missouri Student Journalist of the Year, and Serena Liu, Missouri’s Representative for the 2023 Al Neuharth Free Spirit Conference. Palomino thanks anonymous donors and a Parkway School District grant for funding the 314 Media Day conference. (Photo courtesy of Diego Perez Palomino) reached out to the St. Louis Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists to help him secure the venue at the history museum. Palomino’s journalism teacher, Stricker, said she is impressed with his persistence and organizational skills in putting the conference together. “He did so much of the planning on his own,” Striker said. “I was just there to be like, ‘Yeah, I’ll send that email for you,’ but he did 99% of it. He has that passion. I know it’s hard to organize a program. It can be discouraging, there are times you want to give up and he hasn’t, so I’m very impressed.” Stricker isn’t the only person taking notice. Because of his 314 In Focus magazine, Palomino was invited to present a session at this year’s J Day in March. Palomino and fellow student journalist Leo Brown led a session on journalism community solutions, sharing how students can connect journalists in their own community or school. Palomino credits his love of soccer with getting him involved in journalism. “I’m from Mexico and soccer is a big part of that country’s culture,” Palomino said. “It’s something I grew up on. I kind of figured I wasn’t going to become a professional soccer player, but I wanted to keep soccer in my life. So I thought about sports journalism, and that kind of just got my foot into the door of the newspaper room, and then it evolved from that.” Stricker describes Palomino as a visionary who has a global view when it comes to local issues. “He’s a curious kid, with a unique view of the world,” Stricker said. “I’m excited to see how it all plays out. He has huge potential. The way he sees things is different from other kids. He looks for story ideas outside of his bubble.
