Scene 4:
It is Friday the 15 th of July. Frances turns up to confession Peter is not there. He is selfishly
gone to dinner with his family and to receive a present and is absent from his diocese and
duties.
Frances: Father are you here? Father! Can you hear me? I haven't gone yet, I thought I'd say
goodbye. Father!
Frances looks at her stomach and feels it with her hands.
Frances: I think the demon is finally starting to take me over father. I am not going to allow it
to.
Frances leaves, but really stays on stage. She has a hang man's rope and ties it around her
neck, stands on a chair (the litany of the saints is played to symbolise how Peter sacrificed
her for the priesthood) and then after a few seconds steps down. She takes her own life. She
thinks the demon is going to do it (the baby) and she will not let it have that control over her.
Frances symbolically exits through the audience descending to heaven/the beyond, as she
leaves she sings this song: "When you were born you cried, and the world rejoiced .... Live
your life so that when you die the world cries and you rejoice "
