PREMIER’S PLEA TO GET THE JAB AFTER FLU CASES SPIKE
FLU FEARS GROW
TROY DODDS
The NSW Premier has made a plea with
locals to get the flu jab this year as
cases skyrocket.
The latest respiratory surveillance report
shows more than 4,700 people in NSW were
diagnosed with influenza in the last four
weeks, a 16 per cent increase compared with
the previous year.
NSW hospitals received 480 influenza-like
illness admissions between January 6 and
April 14 2024. This is compared with 284
during the same period in 2023.
Parra News can also reveal there have been
2,953 influenza cases in the Western Sydney
Local Health District (LHD) so far this year,
an increase of 20 per cent.
Concerningly, cases of RSV are also on the
rise in the local area with 4,672 cases so far
this year in the LHD.
The NSW Government is encouraging
people to book in for the influenza vaccine
through a local GP or pharmacist ahead of
winter.
People who are considered to be at higher
risk of severe illness from influenza are eligible
for a free flu vaccine, including children
aged six months to five years and people aged
over 65.
“Influenza is highly contagious, and it can
be life-threatening, especially for vulnerable
groups such as young children, pregnant
women, older adults and people who have
chronic medical conditions,” said Premier
Chris Minns.
LOCAL NEWS
Concerns remain unheard
Nine of 14 Councillors exit chamber over “conflict of interest” in farcical scenes
ELLIE BUSBY
A
local resident’s plea for help
regarding no-grounds evictions
has gone unheard,
after majority of Councillors again
left the Chamber over a conflict of
interest.
An effort to get Parramatta Council
to advocate for the State Government
to end no-grounds evictions
has again fallen on deaf ears for the
second Council meeting in a row.
At the April 8 Council meeting,
Independent Councillor Kellie
Darley moved a motion urging the
NSW Government to come through
on its election promise to end
no-grounds evictions.
Claiming to have a conflict of
interest in the matter, nine out of
14 Councillors walked out of the
Chamber – resulting in a loss of
quorum and the motion having to
be dropped.
Eight of them declared it was
because they were landlords themselves.
At the latest meeting, Parramatta
resident of seven years Jennifer
Andrews intended to address the
Chamber to voice her own concerns
A key housing issue has not been discussed at Council because too many Councillors are landlords.
as a renter who has experienced
being dealt a no-grounds evictions
notice.
However, she was unable to take
the stand after the same Councillors
declared they had been advised to
leave the room – resulting in only
five Councillors remaining.
Although she was unable to speak
at the meeting, a Council document
has revealed some of what Andrews
intended to say.
“Many of you Councillors are
landlords yourself and have multiple
investments properties that you
rent out,” it reads.
“So why would you want to help
me in my fight against the State
Government to bring in what they
promised?”
Andrews goes on to urge the
Council to advocate for the city’s
renters to the NSW Government.
“As a local member in our community
under the local Parramatta City
Council I am asking you to please
put pressure on the State Government
to act on their promises to
end no-grounds evictions,” she
continued.
“I am only asking for help in something
that the State Government has
already promised to do, but failed to
deliver.”
The most recent Council meeting
also saw Darley bring a re-worked
motion back to the Chamber, which
called on Council to implement
emergency council clean-ups
bookings for residents who have
received an eviction with only 30
days’ notice.
But it also failed to be discussed.
The Councillors who disclosed
they had a conflict of interest due to
being landlords themselves include
Councillors Michelle Garrard,
Angela Humphries, Paul Noack,
Sameer Pandey, Dan Siviero, Georgina
Valjak, Lorraine Wearne and
Lord Mayor Pierre Esber.
Time for real change, not hot air
The way Australia responds to and handles
violence against women is fundamentally
broken. Throw another broken system into the
mix, being the state’s bail laws, and you have a
recipe for consistent tragedy.
And none of this is new.
For years and years, there have been calls for
bail laws to be reformed.
News...........................................................1-17
Business......................................................18
Life & Style.........................................19-22
It was meant to be funny but in a city like
Sydney, it rang ruefully true. “New couple
immediately give up running after meeting at
run club,” blared the headline of Double Bay
Today. Most posts on the satirical online news
site get 1,000-2,000 likes. The fact this one has
garnered more than 7,000 and been pinned
top the Instagram page proves it has struck a
chord.
Another article jokes about how a run club
member is at imminent risk of being expelled
from the group. He’s too focused on fitness
and not enough on finding a girlfriend.
If I still had any doubt, it was dispelled when
an old school mate – a proudly unfashionable
single bloke hoping for lightning to strike – excitedly
sent me a link to a recent article from
‘Mamamia’ of all places. “Run clubs are the
new dating apps”, it said.
We’re a city made for the great outdoors,
one that worships the body beautiful. Why
wouldn’t we with all that gorgeous sunshine
and glistening waterfront?
Even for those of us in Parramatta who don’t
live near the harbour or a beach, there’s always
the river with its intricate network of
walking and cycling trails. No better backdrop
against which to lose your belly or stretch
those quads.
But our addiction to looking our best collides
with another problem. This isn’t a city where
it’s particularly easy to meet people. Hence
the growing popularity of run clubs, the perfect
solution in a time-poor age whether you
are a stressed corporate professional, international
arrival looking to find your feet, or veteran
with rickety knees who’s found a second
wind as a race course marshal.
In my early 30s, a decade ago now, I joined
a free weekly bootcamp in the city. It was part
of a weekly Meetup held in Hyde Park. At the
time, I was working an intense full-time job.
However, I’d also recently arrived back in Sydney
after a nearly four-year stint abroad.
So, reconnecting with the city and finding
new social circles – preferably with an international
tinge – was also a big motivation. The
group was put through its paces by an American
expat called Ben who worked in finance
during the day.
With the menace of a platoon commander,
he’d scream at us to go harder as we winced
through burpees, squats and jumping jacks,
interspersed with jog downs past landmarks
like the Opera House and Mrs Macquarie’s
Chair.
For the first 12 months, survival was my
main priority rather than making friends. But
it soon became clear, others were more strategic.
For example, packing a change of shirt
and deodorant, perfect for looking your best at
those post-bootcamp drinks.
New couples formed in front of our eyes.
Groups of runners splintered off to catch up
for brunch on Saturday mornings or go out to
parties.
For a while, I threw myself into it with a punishing
schedule worthy of Robert de Castella:
Blackmores, five or six City2Surfs, Sydney Half
Marathon, even a Melbourne Half or two and
Entertainment...............................23-35
Business Directory....................36-37
Auto...............................................................38
This is not a Labor or a Liberal issue. All governments
of all colours have their share of
blame to burden them.
But right now, there is a chance for Prime
Minister Anthony Albanese and Premier Chris
Minns to cement their legacies.
A legacy that, once and for all, tackles the
issue of violence against women by their partners
or former partners. A legacy judged purely
by numbers and statistics.
Those numbers and statistics right now are
an indictment on previous governments and
the current one.
It is simply not good enough.
Time for the rhetoric to stop and real change
to be implemented.
Are run clubs the new dating apps?
some weekend endurance race around Port
Stephens that involved scaling sand dunes
barefoot.
In hindsight, after a first few decades in Sydney
cloistered in high-achieving academic
settings, it was a wonderful phase of life, getting
out and about and enjoying the city. And
even though we’re now going grey, have put
on weight and don’t fit into the fashionable
clothes we once did, a few friends from that
period have lasted to this day.
The pandemic cruelled much of this momentum.
It changed our city, and I think segregated
areas like Parramatta from others that
carried on as normal. Keeping as fit as possible
remained a necessity. But, ensconced in
heavy lockdown, it became a more solitary
pursuit. For example, tackling the Ermington
Park Run course at night.
How bizarre it all seems now that fun runs
were cancelled due to COVID and we obsessed
over whether outdoor fitness classes
should be exempt.
Having an active, healthy life is a wonderful
thing. We teach our kids this early, putting
them through groups like rugby, soccer,
netball and scouts. But there is a dark side as
we get older. The solitary confinement of allnight
gyms popping up all around the city.
Increased steroid use and distorted notions of
body image.
Today, my rule of thumb is that if it’s worth
running, it’s worth doing with other people.
Getting some fresh air, Vitamin D and if you’re
lucky, a new group of mates too.
LOCAL NEWS
“We won’t be fooled”
Council to seek answers over promised oval, park
ELLIE BUSBY
Parramatta Councillors have accused a
state-owned corporation of throwing
the local Council “under the bus” over
the construction of the much-needed Wentworth
Point oval.
With the new Wentworth Point high school
on track to open for students in term 1 of 2025,
City of Parramatta has again called on the
State Government to deliver an oval for the
fast-growing community.
“It’s with some urgency that we need Landcom
to get ahead and start building the school
oval,” Councillor Paul Noack said.
“The high school down at Wentworth Point
is almost completely constructed, they’ll
start students enrolling next year and they’re
without an oval.”
A NSW Department of Education update on
the development of the high school revealed
that the next steps for the new oval involved
getting approval from City of Parramatta.
“Once the City of Parramatta Council has
approved the Transport for NSW modification
to change the location of Ridge Road to allow
for new playing fields; a State Significant
Development (SSD) modification will be
submitted to the NSW Department of Planning
and Environment (DPE) for Phase 2 of
the high school,” the document said.
But Noack slammed this, saying the NSW
Artist’s impression of the Wentworth Point high school.
Government and Landcom are trying to
put the blame on Parramatta Council for
construction not beginning on the new green
space.
“Talk about throwing us under the bus, it’s
all our fault that Landcom aren’t going ahead
with the construction of that much-needed
school oval,” he said.
“We need that school oval built ASAP,
irrelevant of what the needs of Landcom are
in terms of their lust for more buildings out in
Wentworth Point.
“What we’ve got to do is call on our political
leaders to take firm action, to make sure, one,
we have the school oval built as soon as possible,
it should be built now.”
Councillor Dan Siviero agreed with Noack,
saying the oval and much-anticipated Peninsula
Park are both long overdue.
“Providing green open space to people goes
a very long way,” he added.
“We can’t talk about how great education
is without providing great outdoor spaces,
specifically green spaces, for children.
Layout of the new high school.
“With the right support and the right advocacy,
which continues and will continue, this
will get the children of the future what they
ultimately deserve.”
Parramatta Council will now write to State
Member for Parramatta Donna Davis and the
NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces
Paul Scully, calling for urgent action by the
NSW Government to deliver the oval and
Peninsula Park.
Noack warned Wentworth Point will not be
conned out of its school oval and 3.9 hectare
Peninsula Park.
“We won’t be fooled. We want what was
promised back in 2014.”
LOCAL NEWS
Social housing wait
list out of control
The social housing wait list in the local
area has ballooned out to 30 months, almost
doubling in less than a year.
New figures confirm the median wait time
for a social housing property in the Western
Sydney district is 30 months, compared with
28.5 months in December last year and 16.4
months in June 2023.
“The figures are damning. Thousands of
people who are unable to find affordable
housing in the private rental market face waiting
up to a decade for a place to call home,”
said Homelessness NSW CEO, Dom Rowe.
“It means domestic violence survivors are
forced to choose between sleeping in a vehicle
or returning to a dangerous home. Others are
stuck in unsafe and overcrowded accommodation
or sleeping on a different couch every
night.”
Rowe has called on a major spending blitz to
address the issue.
“The government needs to build 5,000 new
social homes each year for the next decade to
take NSW’s share of social housing from one
in 20, to one in 10 homes,” he said.
“The government must spend $30 million
over three years to expand additional accommodation
to ensure women and children
aren’t forced to return to violent homes.”
By the end of March, there were 57,401
households on the waitlist across NSW,
including 8,657 on the priority waitlist.
“Demand for emergency accommodation is
skyrocketing,” Rowe said.
“Moves last year to broaden access to
temporary accommodation without increasing
supply swamped an already clogged
system.”
Flu season nears
Health officials desperate to avoid repeat of last year’s numbers
NSW Chief Health Officer, Dr Kerry Chant, is encouraging locals to get vaccinated against the flu.
Story continued from » p. 1
Health Minister Ryan Park said
the flu season was expected to
spike further soon.
“Influenza has started to
increase in some parts of
Australia, and it’s expected to
start to increase across NSW
soon, so it is very important you
get vaccinated to protect yourself
and others as you don’t want to
end up in hospital or put vulnerable
community members at
risk,” he said.
“Everyone six months and
older is recommended to get a flu
vaccine and these are available
through GPs for any age group,
as well as through pharmacies
for everyone aged five years and
over.”
NSW Chief Health Officer, Dr
Kerry Chant, said it was important
not to have a repeat of last
year’s horror flu season.
“Last year, we saw an increase
in ED presentations among
young children with some being
admitted to intensive care with
life-threatening complications
from the flu. We don’t want to
see a repeat this year, so we are
reminding families to book their
children aged under five years
in for their free flu vaccine now,”
she said.
“It is a very quick and easy
process to book in with your
local doctor or pharmacist
who can also administer your
COVID-19 vaccine at the same
time if recommended. This
simple act can help you and your
family stay healthy this winter.”
Cases of COVID are reasonably
low in the local area, according
to the latest figures.
Local councils express grief after
incidents at Bondi and Wakeley
ELLIE BUSBY
“Our community is in shock”:
Local Councils have paid their
respects to the lives that were
lost at the recent attack in Bondi, as
Australia continues to grieve.
Cumberland Council has called
for calm and compassion following
the recent attacks in Bondi and
Wakeley, with a minute’s silence
held at the latest meeting.
Mayor Lisa Lake said the “tragic
act of violence” has left people in
disbelief.
“I extend my deepest condolences
to the loved ones of those that lost
their lives. To those injured, my
thoughts and wishes for a full and
speedy recovery are with you and
your families,” she said.
“My thoughts are also for those
who were there at the time and
witnessed this terrible act of
violence, and for those who, on
learning of this attack, experienced
distress and sorrow having recalled
previous trauma from their own
past.
“I wish you all comfort and peace
during this difficult time.”
Lord Mayor Pierre Esber (second from left) with other western Sydney Mayors recently at Bondi Junction.
The Council has also addressed
the “senseless attack” on Bishop Mar
Mari Emmanuel of the Christ the
Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley,
which led to a violent confrontation
between police officers and rioters.
“To the Assyrian community
of Sydney, there is no doubt this
unprovoked attack has caused you
great shock and distress. I offer you
our support. We are thinking of you
at this time,” Lake added.
“To the paramedics and police
who attended the scene to ensure
safety, I thank you for your service.
“I urge everyone to maintain a
sense of calm and compassion,
and to reflect on our humanity as
the common bond that unites us
all.”
City of Parramatta has also
expressed its deepest condolences
to the Bondi attack victims and their
families.
Lord Mayor Pierre Esber, who
recently visited Bondi Junction
with other Mayors from western
Sydney to lay flowers, spoke of the
community’s strength following the
stabbings at the shopping centre.
“I was there the other day and I
led a delegation of about four or five
Mayors and a Deputy Mayor, I must
admit it was quite moving, it moved
me a bit when you get down there
and you see all those flowers and all
the people,” Esber said at the recent
Council meeting.
“And just talking to all the people
around in the cafes, it was quite
sombre and moving. It will take
a while but I’m sure the people at
Bondi Junction are pretty strong
and tough.”
Police in search
for missing teen
MAN ACCUSED OF STEALING $200,000 WORTH OF POWER TOOLS
Police have charged a man following
investigations into the theft of approximately
$200,000 worth of power tools.
In March 2024, officers from Cumberland
Police Area Command began investigating
steal from motor vehicle offences in the
Merrylands area.
It is alleged that the tools were stolen from
motor vehicles from various locations including
Merrylands and Holroyd.
Following extensive enquiries, police
executed a search warrant at a home on
George Street, Parramatta last Friday and
arrested a 35-year-old man.
Police allege the man was in possession of
numerous power tools, a Yamaha motorcycle,
electric scooter, and a small bag containing
methylamphetamine.
The items were seized for forensic examination
as investigations by police continue to
take place.
The 35-year-old man was taken to Granville
Police Station where he was charged with
a range of offences, including six counts of
‘larceny’, five counts of ‘destroy or damage
property’, ‘steal motor vehicle’, ‘deal with
property proceeds of crime => $100,000, ‘break
and enter intend to commit serious indictable
offence and ‘break and enter intend to commit
serious indictable offence (attempt)’.
He was bail refused to appear before
Parramatta Local Court on Thursday, June 20.
As inquiries continue, police have released
an image of a white Ford Focus, which can be
viewed on police social media channels.
They believe the vehicle could assist them
with their inquiries.
Anyone with dashcam footage or information
that may relate to this investigation is
urged to contact Granville Police Station or
Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Information
can be treated confidentially.
Have you seen Mohammed?
Police are appealing for public assistance
to locate a teenage boy missing from the
Sydney Olympic Park area.
Mohammed Abukhalifa, aged 14, was last
seen on Jamieson Street, Sydney Olympic
Park, about 5.30pm on Friday, April 26.
When he failed to return home and
could not be located or contacted, officers
attached to Auburn Police Area Command
were notified and commenced enquiries
into his whereabouts.
Police and family hold serious concerns
for Mohammed’s welfare as he lives with
autism and is non verbal.
Mohammed is described as being of
Mediterranean/Middle Eastern appearance,
172cm tall, slim build, with short
black hair and brown eyes.
He was last seen wearing a navy-blue
CANCER MEDICINE
NOW ON PBS
Australians with an invasive form of
early breast cancer that is at high risk of
returning after initial treatment will have
affordable access to the first additional
type of medicine for their condition in
more than 15 years.
From tomorrow (May 1), VERZENIO
(abemaciclib) will be made available
through the Pharmaceutical Benefits
Scheme (PBS) for approximately 1,800
Australians with hormone receptor
positive (HR+), human epidermal growth
factor receptor 2 negative (HER2-), at
high risk of recurrence after early breast
cancer.
Currently, these patients face a one-inthree
chance of their cancer coming back
despite surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy
and ongoing hormone therapy.
“Nobody wants their cancer to return.
Unfortunately, for around a third of all
patients with early breast cancer, it will
come back,” said Professor Fran Boyle
AM, Medical Oncologist at Mater Hospital
North Sydney (and an investigator in
VERZENIO clinical trials).
“Patients with high risk factors are three
times more likely to have their cancer
return than those with low-risk characteristics,
and it generally returns as incurable
advanced disease.”
Eligible patients will pay just $7.70
(concession) or $31.60 (general patients)
each month for VERZENIO.
Without the subsidy, the medicine would
cost more than $100,000 for the two-year
course of treatment, after which time the
treatment is ceased.
Kids should get their heads out of the game if they sustain a concussion while playing
sport.
ELLIE BUSBY
Heads up: With winter sport having
now kicked off across the state,
parents are being reminded to be
on the lookout for any signs of a concussion
in their child.
“When in doubt, sit it out,” is the message
The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is
sending to Parramatta’s young athletes this
sporting season.
Professor Gary Browne, Emergency
Physician and Senior Physician in Sports
and Exercise Medicine at The Children’s
Hospital at Westmead, said its important
to recognise the symptoms of a concussion
early on.
“If parents just take one message away in
terms of prevention of significant concussion
injury, if they recognise it very early on
and they remove their child or young person
and they don’t return back to play until
they’re totally asymptomatic, that really has
a huge impact on a concussion outcome,” he
told Parra News.
According to Browne, common sign of
a concussion include appearing dazed,
having difficulties remembering before
or after the hit, trouble moving, showing
personality changes and repeating questions
they’ve been asked.
He said medical advice should be sought
immediately if a child is showing serious
signs like seizures, headaches, dizziness
Motorists are being
advised of changed traffic
conditions on the M4 Motorway
next month for essential
investigation work.
The work will be carried
out along the M4 Motorway
eastbound above the road
shoulder between the
Burnett Street on ramp at
Parramatta and the Church
Street off ramp at Granville
from Wednesday, May 1
to Friday, May 31, weather
permitting.
Workers will be on site
weekdays from 10.30am to
3pm to avoid peak traffic
periods and minimise
impacts to motorists, with
the road shoulder to be
closed along this section
during this time.
For the additional safety
and protection of workers,
a traffic control vehicle will
be positioned within the
road shoulder near where
the surveying work is taking
place.
The work will result in slow
going for motorists.
or loss of balance, nausea or vomiting,
increased tiredness, light and noise sensitivity,
difficulty with their vision or sleeping,
numbness and problems concentrating.
“Some of these symptoms are not immediate
in young children, they can actually
have their head strike or their head impact
and they don’t seem to much in the way of
symptoms and they can evolve over the next
few hours, sometimes over the next day or
two, so that’s the importance of just recognising
that head impact,” Browne added.
“The kids who do tend to have a broader
range of symptoms, what we call a higher
symptom burden, they often do go on to
have a more prolonged injury, and in those
cases they’ll often get sleep disturbances
and mood changes and other behavioural
and emotional problems as well.
“But they tend to fall in the minority of
cases, the vast majority of children will
often get one or two of these symptoms, the
symptoms tend to resolve very quickly over
a couple of days to a week.”
Browne said the current recommendation
is that children who sustain a concussion
while playing sport should sit out for at least
21 days before getting back in the game.
“This is very much an expert consensus
based on the fact that the young brain is
developing and the young brain takes time
to really recover,” he said.
For more information, go to www.schn.
Work to take place on motorway
“Temporary traffic
changes will include a
reduced speed limit of
60km/h with signage in
place along the M4 Motorway
and adjacent roads
to notify motorists of the
changes,” a Transport for
NSW spokesperson said.
Motorists are reminded
to observe speed limits and
follow the direction of traffic
controllers and signs.
Better place to play
open at Northmead
LOCAL NEWS
ELLIE BUSBY
A
revamped Arthur Phillip Park has
officially reopened, revealing a $1.24
million upgrade of the Northmead
public space.
Transformed into a “modern facility”, the
park now features a larger playground with
an accessible play space, nature play area, a
half-court basketball space, a climbing tower,
additional picnic and BBQ areas.
New drinking water fountains, waste bins
and new solar pathway lighting have also
been installed, with landscaping and tree
planting offering shade throughout the park.
To thank the community for its contribution
towards the park, the official reopening was
marked with a free outdoor cinema event for
locals, along with live music, outdoor games,
children’s workshops and roving entertainment.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre Esber
said the outdoor cinema event was a great
opportunity for the community to enjoy free
activities during the school holidays and
experience the improved park.
“Our community played a significant role
in shaping the improvements for our muchloved
park and we’re proud to deliver this
significant recreational space with more
shade and picnic areas that our community
need,” he added.
“We know how important open spaces are
to our local schools, sporting groups and
residents, these upgrades will provide plenty
of opportunities for outdoor fun throughout
the year.”
These upgrades now complete Stage 1 of
the Arthur Phillip Master Plan, with Council
confirming they are currently pursuing additional
funding to deliver the following stages.
Adopted by Council in July 2021, the
renewed master plan for Arthur Phillip Park
aims to provide a long-term future vision and
statutory requirement to fund new districtlevel
recreational facilities and amenities.
The NSW Government contributed $1.15
million to the park upgrade through its Public
Spaces Legacy Program Funding.
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul
Scully said he is pleased the State Government
has been able to support additional growth in
the area by delivering critical infrastructure
and high-quality open space to support more
homes.
“Arthur Phillip Park has been transformed
into a beautiful space which will be enjoyed
by families and local sporting groups for
decades to come,” Scully said.
“Parramatta is a thriving area and the
Government knows that to support a growing
community, we must provide the infrastructure.
Only last year we announced an injection
of $10.6 million to fast-track a pedestrian
link through Parramatta.”
LOCAL NEWS
The day the fun stopped
It’s been 20 years since the iconic Wonderland Sydney closed its doors for good
FINN CAMBRIDGE
Last Friday (April 26) marked 20 years
since Australia's Wonderland at Eastern
Creek closed its doors.
Employing thousands of people and entertaining
millions over its lifetime, Australia’s
Wonderland holds so many wonderful memories
for many in western Sydney.
Australia’s Wonderland opened its doors in
1985 as an alternative to the failing Luna Park
in North Sydney. It was built by an American
company, Kings Entertainment, which was
owned by another Stateside corporation,
Taft Broadcasting. It was also funded by a
conglomerate of Australian companies such
as James Hardie Industries.
At its opening, the park housed a dozen rides,
the flagship of which was the Bush Beast,
which was, like the park, the biggest in the
Southern Hemisphere. It also had rides such
as the Bounty’s Revenge, an inverting pirate
ship and the Tasmanian Devil, which spun a
set of gondolas around which would result in
them swinging under centrifugal force.
In 1988, Wonderland added a water park,
The Beach. This was followed by the Demon
roller coaster in 1992 and Space Probe in 1995,
the latter having some of the most elaborate
theming ever seen at an Australian theme
park.
The entrance to Australia’s Wonderland at Eastern Creek. Photo: Wonderland Memories.
However, this growth was stunted when the
park was sold to a Malaysian based company,
Sunway Group. Sunway seemed to have no
interest in running the park, adding only a
relocated cable car` from Moore Park. They
even shut down the kids section of the park.
So, it was no surprise when Sunway
announced in February 2004 that the park
would shut for good in April that year, to be
razed and turned into an industrial estate.
The owners cited the closure on everything
from 9/11 to global financial issues, however,
many believed mismanagement and a lack of
care were the real reasons.
The park shut its gates
for the
final time on April 26, 2004.
In the years since
Wonderland’s closure,
o n l y
one new theme p a r k
has been opened in S y d n e y ,
Wet’N’Wild Sydney (now known as
Raging Waters) located at Prospect.
This leaves Sydney with a lacklustre amusement
park scene, although it has improved
with the opening of nine new rides, including
the Big Dipper, at Luna Park.
In recent years, there have been proposals
from a number of people to rebuild Wonderland.
But with a lack of government will and
cooperation, none of these plans have gone
anywhere.
BUSINESS
WITH REBECCA DI NOIA
WESTERN SYDNEY BUSINESS CENTRE • 4721 5011
Step out of your comfort zone: It could
be a huge win for your business!
IT’S IN
THE BAG
Are you a business
owner who often
feels disconnected
from the rest of the world
due to being too busy working
in your business? Do
you find it hard to keep up
with the latest technology
trends because you don’t
have enough time to learn
them?
Last week, I went to
Queensland to attend
Retail Fest Australia. It was
a three-day e-commerce
expo designed for business
owners across Australia.
The event offered a wide
range of workshops covering
various topics, including AI,
SEO, and marketing. The
workshops were designed to
help business owners learn
about the latest industry
insights and improve their
e-commerce business
skills. Additionally, industry
speakers share their experiences
and an exhibition
with service providers such
as 3PL, logistics, CRM, and
SMS marketing available to
support businesses.
On the first day, I attended
a three-hour E-commerce
Accounting 101 workshop.
I learned about cash flow,
gross profit, pricing, inventory,
and most importantly,
how to improve them by
understanding the numbers
and the relationship
between each of them. This
knowledge can help with
marketing strategy.
While spending time away
from your business to work
on it, it doesn’t mean you
can’t have fun. There were
after-parties in the evening,
and if you’re an early riser,
you could join a morning
run along the beach at 7am.
As for me, I had the chance to
check out some local restaurants
and tried Persian food
for the first time.
Overall, those three
days gave me a different
perspective. It helped me
view my business from an
outside point of view and
identify areas that need
improvement. So, if you’re
wondering whether you
should attend industry
events, maybe ask yourself
if it’s time to step out of your
comfort zone. You might be
surprised at what you could
learn or, better still, the
connection you can make.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
The Sun, Venus, Jupiter and Uranus
activate your family zone, so home is
where the heart is this week. Even though
you may be faced with a frustrating
domestic problem, be thankful for the
relatives who nurture and support you.
As birthday great Audrey Hepburn said,
“I may not always be offered work, but I’ll
always have my family.” Mars stirs your
restlessness on Friday, so try to escape on
a grand weekend adventure in the great
outdoors.
This week’s stars increase your Piscean
tendency to blurt things out and spread
secrets. So think before you speak! When
it comes to a recalcitrant relative or an
annoying neighbour, be more diplomatic
as you build bridges and let bygones be
bygones. And don’t let negative self-talk
hold you back. Be inspired by actress
and humanitarian Audrey Hepburn
(who was born on May 4, 1929), “Nothing
is impossible. The word itself says ‘I’m
possible’!”
Dynamic Mars (your patron planet)
charges through your sign, from Tuesday
night until June 9. So your fiery,
passionate, proactive, boisterous, bossy
Aries side will be on full display. Do your
best to get must-do, routine tasks out
of the way early in the week. Then you
can enjoy the activities that really make
your heart sing. Be inspired by birthday
great, actress and humanitarian Audrey
Hepburn “I believe, every day, you should
have at least one exquisite moment.”
Jolly Jupiter (planet of prosperity)
is jumping through your sign until
May 25-26. This lucky placement only
happens every 12 years, so make the
most of it while it’s still around! This
week the Sun, Uranus and Venus (your
ruling planet) are also transiting through
Taurus so confidence, authenticity and
robust self-esteem will take you far. Be
inspired by birthday great, iconic movie
star Audrey Hepburn, “Always be a firstrate
version of yourself.”
Restless, gung-ho Geminis can be too
quick to ditch family members, dismiss
friends, and disregard colleagues who
stuff up or disappoint. But is that always
the best thing to do? Perhaps most people
deserve a second chance? As Holly wood
star, humanitarian and birthday great
Audrey Hepburn wisely said, “People
have to be restored, renewed, revived,
reclaimed and redeemed. Never throw
out anyone.” Friday favours networking,
travel and adventure.
Have you been hibernating in your cosy
Crab cave? With mighty Mars charging
through your career zone (from Tuesday
night until June 9) do your best to initiate
positive changes at work. It’s time to be
bold rather than brooding, and proactive
rather than reactive. And spend some
quality time in nature. If you’re lucky
enough to have one, then get out and
potter in the garden. As birthday great
Audrey Hepburn observed, “To plant a
garden is to believe in tomorrow.”
Prosperity planet Jupiter is jumping
through your career zone until May
25-26, which only happens every 12
years! So don’t procrastinate Cats – a
lucky opportunity could come out of the
blue. You need to make hay while the sun
shines and strike while the iron is hot!
Be inspired by birthday great, actress
Audrey Hepburn, “Opportunities don’t
often come along. When they do, you
have to grab them.” But don’t over-promise
and then under-deliver.
The Sun, Venus, Jupiter and Uranus
boost confidence and enthusiasm, as
you pursue ambitious and adventurous
aspirations for the future. Avoid being
too safe and sensible Virgo! It’s time to
let go of a perceived failure that has been
holding you back. If you learn from your
mistakes, then you can finally move
forward. Loved ones will help you along
the way. Your motto is from birthday
great, Audrey Hepburn, “The best thing
to hold onto in life is each other.”
Libra is the zodiac sign that rules
appearance, aesthetics, fashion, cosmetics
and personal pampering. And this
week’s stars urge you to look for the inner
beauty in yourself – and other people. So
here are some beauty tips from birthday
great, movie star Audrey Hepburn (born
on May 4, 1929), “For beautiful eyes, look
for the good in others; for beautiful lips,
speak words of kindness. And for poise,
walk with the knowledge that you are
never alone.”
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Love planet Venus (visiting your
relationship zone) squares your ruler
Pluto (in your family zone) so close
relationships could be compulsive and
conflicted, especially mid-week. And
jealousy could rear its ugly head. Smart
Scorpios will go out of your way to avoid
power struggles and controlling behaviour,
as you argue less and compromise
more. Friday is wonderful for work functions
and family get-togethers … as long
as you are willing to compromise.
It’s time to enjoy the simple pleasures of
life! This week you’ll be at your creative
and playful best as Mercury and Mars
activate your leisure and pleasure zone.
In the words of birthday great, actress
Audrey Hepburn, “Enjoy the day to the
hilt. The day as it comes. People as they
come.” But there is also a tendency to
eat and drink too much, and spend too
much time sitting on the sofa. So try
to balance indoor fun activities with
outdoor physical action.
Do you have to be so conscientious
Capricorn, and such a stickler for doing
things the right way? This week (with
Pluto squaring Venus in your fun zone)
resist the urge to be overly sombre and
super serious. Try to find the sweet spot
between being organised and being
spontaneous, as you have fun AND get a
lot done. Heed the wise words of movie
star Audrey Hepburn (born on May 4,
1929), “The most important thing is to
enjoy your life – to be happy.”
A TINY GETAWAY IN THE
Eco-friendly tiny homes are all the rage
these days, so when I got offered the
opportunity to stay at one recently, I
jumped at the chance to get back to nature.
I was given a list of around 10 Tiny Away
homes to choose from, but after much thought
and research I couldn’t help but pick a place
that was located right in the heart of Wine
Country – the Hunter Valley.
Despite nearly every individual I know
visiting the Hunter Valley in recent years, I
had personally never stepped foot in the place
– probably because I’m not a massive wine
drinker (except for that work Christmas party
about 10 years ago… sorry, boss).
But like many people informed me prior, the
Hunter Valley is more than just vineyards and
wine tastings – there’s breweries, distilleries,
and cheese and chocolate shops.
Well, sign me up!
With my bags packed and loaded into my
fabulous new Toyota Kluger Grande, we hit
the road bound for Pokolbin.
This luxurious SUV was a dream to drive.
It was spacious, packed plenty of punch and,
given the hybrid nature of the vehicle, not
even an extra tank of petrol was required for
the entire journey – talk about eco-friendly!
After about two-and-a-half hours on the
road, we finally arrived at Tiny House 888
– our perfect tiny home located in Central
Pokolbin in the heart of Wine Country.
The Smelly Cheese Shop has all the goods.
Once we pulled up, I immediately took out
my phone to start snapping pictures of this
incredible property located in the middle
of the wilderness. I mean, I had to make the
people back home jealous, right?
After I was satisfied that I had taken enough
photos of this cute, little rural escape, my wife
and I stepped inside and were quite surprised
at how spacious this tiny home actually was.
Not only did it feature a decent sized and
comfortable bed, but it also had a smart
television, split air conditioning, fridge and
the necessary kitchen amenities and cooking
equipment you’d need for a two-night stay.
The bathroom was also a pleasant surprise.
I revealed to my wife the night before we left
that we’d be using a compost toilet for our
upcoming stay and to be truthful, I almost
had to look for another guest to bring along
with me. Fortunately, her fears were alleviated
when she saw the bathroom in person.
For people that don’t know, Tiny Away
homes follow ecologically sustainable principles,
which means their bathrooms include
a waterless eco-friendly compost toilet, hand
basin and gas heated shower. It’s designed in
this way to satisfy people’s needs with natural
resources and processes to save water and of
course, the environment.
Tiny House 888 is the perfect place to stay for a weekend in the Hunter Valley.
Another great aspect of this tiny home experience
is that you’re completely away from
all the hustle and bustle, so once you’re done
visiting all the incredible sites of the Hunter
that day, you can retreat back to your property
and not have to see or hear from a single soul.
Tiny House 888 isn’t just charming on
the inside, outside is just as appealing.
Surrounded by trees, fire trails and fairy
lights, we spotted several kangaroos enjoying
the serenity just like us whilst relaxing
outside. And when it started to cool down and
dusk was setting in, the nearby fire pit was
just about begging us to be lit.
If you’ve never been to the Hunter Valley
before, it’s seriously a great weekend
away for couples, friendship groups and
families.
And when you’re staying at centrally
located accommodation like Tiny
Away’s Tiny House 888, the best the
Hunter has to offer is basically on your
doorstep.
Of course this wouldn’t be a travel review
without some recommendations, so be sure
to give these places a visit if you’re making the
trip up north.
A fun stop for lunch is 4 Pines at the Farm
in Pokolbin. Born a decade ago from a casual
conversation between a beer-loving father
and son, 4 Pines at the Farm is large venue
home to exceptional beer and seriously
awesome food.
A visit to the Hunter wouldn’t be the same
without some cheese and crackers, and the
Smelly Cheese Shop at Pokolbin Village
Tiny House 888 is even prettier at night.
is the perfect stop to pick up everything you
need for a little picnic by a vineyard or a
cheeky snack back at your accommodation.
Like I mentioned earlier, wine isn’t really
my thing but the good news for me was, the
Hunter Valley is home to some great distilleries
as well.
I was able to enjoy a free tasting at the glitzy
Small Mouth Vodka, located in the Hunter
Valley Gardens precinct, and sipped on some
delicious gin and moonshine at the famous
“THE HUNTER VALLEY
IS MORE THAN JUST
VINEYARDS AND
WINE TASTING”
Hope Estate, which has been home to some
exceptional concerts over the years.
If you’re after a sweet treat you can’t go past
these two fine establishments – Cocoa Nib
Artisan Chocolate at Keith Tulloch Wine and
the uberpopular Sabor Dessert Bar on Broke
Road. Photos I posted from these two places
had everyone hounding me when I returned
home. What I really liked about Sabor is that
they can pair a wine with your dessert – so
how could I say ‘no’ to a glass of port with my
Black Forrest cake?
Lastly, dinner. The
IN THE MIRROR with Cassidy Pearce
Your guide to ensure mum
is pampered this Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day is just
around the corner,
but, thankfully, you
haven’t yet left it too late to
find the perfect gift.
In my completely unbiased
opinion, beauty products
make for some of the best gifts
for Mother’s Day –
there’s something
for every budget,
and it is an easy
way to add a bit of
luxury to her life.
If the important
woman in your
life is the type to
spend a little too
much time getting
ready in the morning,
here are some gift ideas to
show her you get her.
Spice up her makeup routine
One thing all mums have
down pat is their makeup
routine. They know their
shades, they know what their
favourite products are, and
chances are they’ve been using
them since before you were
born.
If your mum has ever shown
an interest in trying something
new, or you notice her products
starting to get a little
low, Mother’s Day
is the perfect time
to help her out.
I wouldn’t get
anything too
shade-specific,
like foundations
or concealers,
but if you have a
general idea of the
types of colours your mum
likes to use in her makeup, go
for a new eyeshadow palette
like the Tartelette In Bloom
Clay Palette, or a new blush,
like the Hourglass Ambient
Lighting Blush (pictured
above).
Make her feel pampered
You can’t go wrong with a
nice bath or body product to
pamper mum this Mother’s
Day.
Fresh makes some really
beautiful skincare and body
products that smell lovely and
are a step up from your normal
day-to-day products, without
feeling too fancy that she’d
be hesitant to use them. I love
their Lotus Youth Preserve
Dream Face Cream (pictured)!
Indulge fragrance lovers
Though a very simple gift
to some, there’s a reason why
perfumes and candles are so
popular for Mother’s Day.
The secret to getting this one
right is to truly listen to the
person you’re buying it for – do
they like fruity scents, floral
scents, or perhaps sweeter
scents?
If you’re not sure, you can
always go the discovery set
route, so mum can try a host of
different scents before choosing
to purchase her favourite
(unless you’re generous
enough to buy it for her). Plenty
of brands do these for candles
and perfumes, including Le
Labo, Yves Saint Laurant,
MALIN+GOETZ and Juliette
has a gun.
Make an investment
in her hair for her
Though you can get hair tools
at all price points, the good
ones that last will set you back
a pretty penny.
If mum has been complaining
about an old hairdryer or
straightener, it may be time for
you to step in.
One of my favourite hair tools
is the Shark FlexStyle (pictured
above), and given it comes with
every attachment you could
possibly need to blow-dry and
curl your hair, it’s the perfect
all-in-one for mum.
ENTERTAINMENT
MOVIES, TELEVISION, MUSIC AND MORE – PARRAMATTA’S LEADING ENTERTAINMENT GUIDE
ON TOP
OF THE WORLD
CASSIDY PEARCE
Nowadays, The Royal Family
Dance Crew has become world
renowned for their impeccable
transitions, formations and signature
hip hop style. But, their
tour manager Loren Espulso has known them
since founder and choreographer Parris Goebel
was just 17.
“That was when the original ReQuest girls
landed in Sydney and wanted to do a show.
They were looking for somewhere to rehearse,
so the Royal Family manager contacted me
and I offered off my rehearsal space, found a
venue, and we had 200 people turn up to the
show – it was sold out,” she said.
She’s watched the Royal Family Dance Crew
grow to become a global product firsthand,
with them now having performed with icons
like Justin Bieber in multiple music videos
including ‘Sorry’ and ‘Yummy’, and in Rihanna’s
iconic Super Bowl Halftime Show.
“I’m so humbled to be a part of it,” she said.
“They are family, and it is a very tight-knit,
small team. It’s absolutely incredible to watch
a product go from a young girl’s dream to
a worldwide product as we’re seeing at the
moment. And, it’s not just appealing to dancers
and the entertainment industry, we’ve got
all types of people coming to see the show
worldwide because they’re so entertainment,
and the name has grown so big.”
But, she said it’s incredibly important
to remember their humble beginnings in
competitive dance, which made them so
renowned in the industry in the first place.
“I don’t want to just narrow it to those big
jobs, because it’s not that at all,” she said.
“She [Goebel] made her mark when she
chose to go, ‘I’m going to the Hip Hop Internationals.
I’ve got a group of girls. Obviously, all
the male crews are winning, but we’re going
to win’, so they’ve won gold medal after gold
medal after gold medal.”
Now, they’re bringing a brand-new show to
Australia, with a touch of nostalgia.
“The ‘Skulls and Crowns’ show is going to be
the original works. We’ve actually allowed for
the most popular sets throughout the last 20
years, and those will make a comeback,” she
said.
“I think the crowd will naturally go off,
because they’ll sit there going, ‘Oh, I remember
that set!’.”
Iconic sets include those from Rihanna’s
Super Bowl and Justin Bieber’s ‘Sorry’ music
video, putting a twist on a classic Royal Family
show.
“The show is always entertaining, always
upbeat, and completely incredible,” she said.
“They also know how to take people on a
journey. You don’t just go, ‘I like dance, so I’m
going to watch a dance show’, it’s a lot more
than that, especially with this show’s history.”
May’s show will mark their third year at
Sydney Coliseum Theatre.
“We love it, the space is incredible and the
team are all fantastic,” she said.
They’ll also be doing accompanying workshops
with the show, with Espulso encouraging
everyone to head down – whether you’re a
dancer or not.
“Anybody is more than welcome to come.
They can sit and observe the workshops, or
they can participate,” she said.
“It’s pretty incredible to watch the number of
people that just come to watch them teach, it’s
grown drastically over the years!”
The Royal Family Dance Crew will be on at
Sydney Coliseum Theatre on Saturday, May
25 at 7pm. For more information or to book,
CASSIDY PEARCE
This Sunday, May 5, pianist Sonya
Lifschitz and composer Robert
Davidson are bringing their latest
work, ‘So Much Myself: Piano Portraits’ to
Riverside Theatres in Parramatta.
‘So Much Myself: Piano Portraits’ is a beautiful
original collection by the same team
who created ‘Stalin’s Piano’.
It aims to probe the big questions of our
time, celebrating the voices and stories of
people bringing their fullest selves to the
challenges of convention, danger, inertia
and prejudice.
BOB McKINNON PRESENTS
In the work, Lifschitz blends her own voice
with the recorded words of figures as diverse
as Marie Curie, Frida Kahlo, Dame Nellie
Melba, Patti Smith, Malouma, Julia Gillard
and Nina Simone to truly bring them to life.
Remnants of these extraordinary lives are
placed then into musical frames provided
by Lifshitz’s piano and derived by Davidson
from each person’s spoken intonation, creating
a five-part musical portrait gallery that
must be seen.
‘So Much Myself: Piano Portraits’ will be
COUNTRY
CORNER
Lamb does her ‘Damn Best’
Aussie country starlet Christie Lamb has
dropped a brand new track, ‘Damn Best’.
‘Damn Best’ follows on from the success
of Lamb’s Golden Guitar winning album
‘Truth’.
Working with producer Stuart Stuart
(Sheppard, Dean Lewis, Amber Lawrence)
for a second time, ‘Damn Best’ showcases
Lamb at her best. The catchy feel-good track
showcases Lamb’s storytelling, hooky melodies,
powerhouse vocals and her country
swagger.
“‘Damn Best’ is all about what it means to
be country. It’s about values and how often
it’s the simplest things in life that brings us
the most joy and make life so much better,”
Lamb said.
“This one goes out to the honest, hardworking,
open road loving, everyone’s your
mate, kind of country fans.”
The song is out now on all the usual
streaming services.
Hubbard’s new album out now
Former Florida Georgia Line member Tyler
Hubbard continues to build on his touring
and streaming success since the release of
his self-titled solo debut last January.
Hubbard continues forging his path as
a solo artist with his sophomore album
‘Strong’, further cementing his position
as a staple in country music.
Hubbard co-produced the album
alongside Jordan Schmidt, and he wrote
or co-wrote each of the 13 tracks. The result
is a dynamic and vibrant collection of songs
that showcase Hubbard’s free-spirited
energy and his ability to craft songs that
highlight life’s most memorable moments.
On ‘Strong’, the 21-time No. 1 hitmaker
finds magic in young love on spirited tracks
including ‘Park’ and ‘BNA’, embraces the
good times on ‘American Mellencamp’ and
‘Night Like That’, and displays his passion
for family and fatherhood.
At the movies...
REVIEW
Civil War

1 hour, 49 minutes
For 109 pulsating minutes, ‘Civil War’ pulls
at the heartstrings, makes you angry, leaves
you totally shocked and rattled and most of
all, leaves you with one burning question:
Could this actually happen in modern day
America?
This chilling thriller tells the story of a modern
day civil war through the eyes of a group
of photo journalists covering the destruction
of the United States, as the uprising attempts
to take over Washington DC and bring down
the President.
There's veteran photographer Lee Smith
(Kirsten Dunst), who has seen it all on battlegrounds
– but is still haunted by what she
witnesses every day. And writer colleague
Joel (Wagner Moura), who is desperate for
an interview with the President. And along
for what is at times a dangerous and edge of
your seat road trip across a crumbling America
is old-school reporter Sammy (Stephen
McKinley Henderson) and aspiring photographer
Jessie (Cailee Spaeny).
‘Civil War’ could have made the mistake of
building up to the conflict, explaining how
we got here. It could have also opted to do
that mid-film in a quieter moment, but it
doesn't. Instead it throws you straight into
the action, and the ‘why’ doesn't seem all
that important.
The character development is so superb
that when the inevitable happens and lives
are lost, it hits hard. Brutally hard.
‘Civil War’ is not for everyone. It’s confronting,
it’s heart-racing and at times it is terribly
sad. But it is one hell of a movie – and definitely
worthy of film of the year discussions.
How to beat Str8ts –
Like Sudoku, no single number can
repeat in any row or column. But...
rows and columns are divided by black
squares into compartments. These
need to be filled in with numbers that
complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set
of numbers with no gaps but can be in
any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black
cells remove that number as an option
in that row and column, and are not part
of any straight. Glance at the solution to
see how ‘straights’ are formed.
AUTO
Here comes the Cyberster
MG offers first look at stunning new vehicle set to launch in Aussie showrooms
NATHAN TAYLOR
Since 1924, MG has
been steadfast in its
forward-thinking, innovative
mindset; inspired by the
unwavering can-do attitude of
its founder, Cecil Kimber.
Following this path, the brand
has grown beyond its roots as
an iconic sports car manufacturer
to become an innovative
EV brand. MG’s evolving brand
identity is testament to this
shift, with the Red Dot Design
Award recognising this in its
‘Product Design’ category.
MG Motor Australia’s Chief
Executive Officer, Peter Ciao
said the Cyberster is a design
that better represents where
MG stands today, and in the
direction it will head in the
future.
“The Cyberster pays respects
to 100 years of MG creating vehicles
that people love to drive.
We don't think of ourselves as
just car owners, it's more than
that,” he said.
“These cars and MG are a
part of history and we’re lucky
enough to be their custodians. A
lot like a Swiss watch. You never
really own it, you just keep this
watch for the next generation.”
Ciao expressed his enthusiasm
following the arrival of
Cyberster test cars in Australia
ahead of its launch later this
year.
“In 2017 when I came into
Australia with MG, I trusted
the commercial logic – build a
team, a brand, a company and
focus on professionalism and
provide the best value, or better
value than other options. So
that's why I can still remember
my first interview in Australia.
‘Yeah, MG relaunching in
Australia to offer one more
choice for Australian customer
and I will try my best to do a
professional job and keep this
option as a better choice for
Australian customers.’ After
seven years, there is no change,
I’m still focused on this. And we
focus on our professional job to
offer best product, best service,
best offer for customer. That's
what we are doing,” he said.
The Red Dot Award is one of the
world’s longest-standing design
competitions. First presented in
1955 as Design Innovations, the
Red Dot Award has been titled
as such since 2000. Each year, a
jury of circa 50 internationally
renowned experts select the
best designs across three categories:
Product Design, Brands
& Communication Design, and
Design Concept.
Renowned globally, the Red
Dot Award represent the most
prestigious accolade in the
realm of design and innovation.
Organised by founder and
CEO Professor Dr Peter Zec,
the Red Dot Award doesn't just
acknowledge aesthetic appeal,
but a standard of excellence
in design. Designated via a
rigorous selection process,
MG’s win is synonymous with
industry recognition – underlining
the marque’s innovation,
creativity and desire to push
the boundaries of design for
everyday Australians and New
Zealanders.
The Cyberster will join
the international and local
award-winning MG4 when it
debuts in Australian showrooms
next year.
The Cyberster is coming to Australia.
“Part-timers” lose again
Sitting in 14th spot after five losses, Parramatta need things to change... and fast
TROY DODDS
The part-time Parramatta
Eels have struck again.
After leading Manly 14-6 at
half-time last Friday night, the Eels
conceded four second half tries and
were comprehensively beaten in the
end, 32-18.
The Eels remain in freefall heading
into a much-needed bye this
weekend, sitting 13th on the ladder,
with many questioning whether
Brad Arthur should remain in the
top job.
Arthur has coached more than 250
games at Parramatta and is a decade
into the full-time role, but it appears
patience is running thin, with many
pondering whether the 49-year-old
is the right man to lead the club out
of its 38-year Premiership drought.
Last week, he declared he was
coaching a “part-time footy team”,
questioning his side’s effort and
determination.
But despite the defeat to Manly,
Arthur saw the positives out of
Friday night’s performance –
admitting he held major concerns
after the defeat to the Dolphins in
Darwin a week earlier.
“I was concerned after last week
with the lack of effort and how we
fell into a massive hole,” he said.
“But we haven’t lost the footy team.
They’re still there. We’ve just got to
decide if it’s full-time all the time,
with that effort and courage that we
showed. If we keep doing that we’ll
fight our way out of it.
“But in the second half we beat
ourselves. We had 12 sets with the
footy to their 25, you just can’t do
that against a good side.”
Arthur was clearly frustrated
at winger Maika Sivo, who was
sin-binned at a crucial time in the
second half after forcing his elbow
into the head of Manly centre
Reuben Garrick.
“It’s dumb, isn’t it?” he said.
Captain Clint Gutherson agreed.
“It was just stupid,” he said.
“We were right in the game, 10
minutes left... it’s just silly things
at the moment that’s really hurting
us.”
Parramatta have only won three
games this season and after the
bye face Brisbane and Melbourne.
There is every chance those two
games could decide Arthur’s fate as
he desperately tries to get the club’s
season back on track.
SPORT
Tuesday, April 30 2024
Rotorua awaits unstoppable Wenty
NATHAN TAYLOR
A
young, powerhouse team
from Wenty Leagues
Netball Club will travel
to New Zealand in September
to compete at the Kurangaituku
Netball Tournament.
The U14’s team were one of three
international squads invited to
play in the prestigious competition,
which sees teams from all over New
Zealand descend on Rotorua for the
two-day contest.
Wenty Leagues were selected to
travel after a dominant run in the
Blacktown City Netball Association,
which has saw them become undefeated
premiers the last four years.
Their inclusion in the upcoming
Kurangaituku Netball Tournament
was a virtual no-brainer.
“Our former team manager Nancy
put our name down a few years ago
because she thought it would be a
good opportunity for the girls to see
what other countries are doing with
their netball,” coach Ana Church
told Parra News.
“We’ve been undefeated premiers
the past four years and, after so
much success, the organisers
invited us to play and see what we
are made of.”
The showstopping Wenty Leagues U14’s netball team are bound for New Zealand later this year.
Church, who coaches the successful
team alongside her husband
Mark, said their group of nine
superstars are looking forward to
competing against the best of the
best.
“They are all ecstatic, they can’t
wait,” she said.
“This is a yearly competition
which sees clubs from all over New
Zealand battle it out to see who
is the best. They send out three
international invites each year, and
we were one of three teams that got
invited.”
Any trip oversees is expensive
these days, let alone sending a
whole sporting team of teenagers
over. In order to help fund the costly
journey across the ditch, Wenty
Leagues Netball Club have held
numerous fundraising activities to
assist in raising money for the girls
to travel over.
“We did a 5km sponsorship
run recently and we’ve got more
Bunnings BBQs lined up,” Church
said.
“We have a few more fundraisers
in the works as well, so people can
check out our Facebook page to see
our upcoming events and how they
can donate.”
While the group aren’t quite sure
how they’ll go against teams from
oversees, they are just proud to be
among the select few chosen to
compete.
Church believes the side has been
successful over the years due to the
love each player has for one another.
“They’re a wonderful bunch of
girls,” she said.
“I find girls either get along or they
don’t, and it’s amazed us that we’ve
found a group of girls who love each
other to bits. They are like family.”
