A Modern Farm House Interior with 

a Modern Timber Frame Exterior

When Peter and Tammy purchased a small, 

nearly 100-year-old cottage on Wood Lake, 

they thought they might be happy with it. 

But after spending a few nights there, they realized 

they weren’t the only inhabitants – they were sharing it 

with squirrels and other furry critters. That’s when they 

decided to build a new cottage on the same footprint 

next to the water. 

After doing some online research, they found 

Discovery Dream Homes and loved the look of their 

timber frame cottages. “I saw the photos of the homes 

with high frontage, tall windows and beams, and fell 

in love with their creations,” says Tammy. “And what I 

liked about Discovery is that you could start with any 

look which could then be customized according to 

your wishes.” 

After several back and fourths with the architectural 

designer, their desired layout was developed and 

approved. “We appreciated that we didn’t have to go 

elsewhere for the plans – it was all done in-house,” 

continues Tammy. 

Their new four-bedroom, four-bathroom timber frame 

home is just under 3,000 sq. ft., on two levels with 

a walk-out on the lower level. “When you come in 

through the front hallway, you have a clear view to the 

lake, with a sugar maple centred perfectly amidst the 

windows, just like a landscape painting!” says Tammy. 

“Our builder recommended that we leave some mature 

trees on the lakeside, and I’m so happy that we did.” 

With all of their projects, the client can use Discovery 

certified builders, or can arrange for their own 

contractor. In this case, after interviewing several 

builders, Peter and Tammy went with Discovery’s 

recommendation of Kevin Mills and his son Cody of D 

& K Contracting, one of the premier builders in the area, 

and a preferred builder for Discovery Dreams Homes, 

specializing in custom log and timber frame builds. 

Tammy describes the style as “marrying a modern farm 

house interior with a modern timber frame exterior.” 

The main floor boasts extensive windows that look 

out onto the lake and a high 22 ft. beamed ceiling, 

complemented by a stone guillotine fireplace. Ship lap 

on the walls adds to the rustic look. 

This energy-efficient home has a propane furnace, 

double-paned windows, and heated floors, along with 

a well-sealed building envelope. 

“Discovery president Ray King and his team went 

above and beyond to ensure our home was built to our 

satisfaction,” says Peter. “If there were any changes or 

hiccups during the construction, he was on top of it. 

I would highly recommend Discovery to others. The 

building process, from shovel in the ground to move 

in, took about a year.”

When working with clients, project manager Hunter 

King, with the help of the Discovery team, aims to 

make the building process a pleasurable experience, 

and is always there to answer any questions they might

Bernie had lived in his home for 18 years and 

was tired of the builder’s grade kitchen. He 

didn’t like the layout, which was dated and 

inefficient, with the kitchen sink tucked away in the 

corner. Friends in town had used Kitchen Cabinet 

Solutions and recommended the company to him. 

“I visited Stacey Lawrence, the designer there, with 

some of my ideas, and she was very receptive,” says 

Bernie. “She listened, and knew exactly what I wanted, 

and the plans the team came up with were dead on.” 

“This was such an exciting project to work on,” says 

Stacey. “Bernie came in with wall measurements and a 

plan to remove bulkheads and he set us free to design 

the space. It wasn’t an easy design. He knew he 

wanted both a full-sized fridge and freezer and double 

wall ovens. That’s a lot of large appliances. Making it 

all feel symmetrical and balanced while still being high 

functioning and efficient to use while cooking was a 

challenge.” 

In the new plans, the kitchen layout was changed 

to make it bigger, bringing it into the dining space. 

The appliances were moved around for ease of 

convenience, the sink and dishwasher moved to a 

large peninsula for easier use of both, with seating on 

one side. The space now includes a full-size upright 

freezer, along with a central almost hidden space for 

the microwave, and a coffee bar. 

While there was a peninsula before, Bernie says that 

nobody wanted to sit at it. The new peninsula is much 

more usable and topped with a gorgeous Dekton 

countertop, in the colour Khalo with a comfortable 

overhang for seating. 

Stacey says that several design features of this new 

kitchen make it stand out. “The countertop has a rich, 

warm veining. It’s bold and organic, and taking it 

up as the backsplash and down as a waterfall on the 

peninsula is just sensational. The range hood is a simple, 

yet unique, design, that Bernie and I sat and drew 

together until it fit his vision. It pulls the eye up towards 

it, making the space feel taller and the cooktop area feel 

special, all without stealing focus from the backsplash,” 

she says. “Bernie is incredibly detail oriented, and he 

didn’t miss a beat in his kitchen.” 

Across from the peninsula is a coffee station, with 

wood cabinet bases. Above them, behind the Morning 

Dew glass doors, the upper cabinet interiors match the 

wood stain of the bases. The maple wood doors on 

the lower cabinets are finished in a custom-made Olive 

stain balancing the Morning Dew cream tones of the 

upper cabinets. 

“Having the two tones makes the room warm yet still 

airy, with all the lightness on top,” says Stacey. “Pulling 

the base colour up into the floating shelves, behind 

the glass doors, and into the hood helps to balance the

airiness, adding some weight to work with those large 

appliances.” 

Mixing the cabinet colours also lends well to mixing 

the metal finishes of the handles. The wood bases have 

similar handles but in a different finish to the Morning 

Dew cabinets. And all the metal finishes work well 

with the lighting fixtures. 

“I knew I didn’t want an all-white kitchen,” he says. 

“I really liked the mixed palette Stacey came up with, 

using stain on the lower maple cabinets and the offwhite 

Morning Dew on the thermofoil uppers.” 

Stacey notes that the electrical outlets are cleverly 

hidden under the upper cabinets behind the light 

valance so as not to intrude on the Dekton backsplash. 

And the black circle atop the peninsula is a phone 

charger that also pops up for another outlet. 

Electrical was done by Tri-Tech Electric, with general 

construction by Build It Bros Ptbo. 

The floating shelves on the side wall add variety to the 

upper level, echoing the tones of the base cabinets, 

providing a spot to display unique dishes while not 

overwhelming the room. 

The new kitchen is much brighter. Even though the 

windows are in the same position, there is more light 

coming in because of the placement of the cabinets, 

according to Bernie. The pendant lights hanging 

over the peninsula are at the right height to keep the 

sightlines clear to the exterior. 

“I’m very happy with the end result – the whole 

peninsula is more user-friendly and lends itself to 

socializing with people sitting at the counter,” says 

Bernie. “Stacey Lawrence and the team at Kitchen 

Cabinet Solutions were very good to work with - any 

bumps along the way were addressed quickly and the 

work was done in a timely manner.” 

“I think this kitchen is spectacular,” says Stacey. “The 

warm wood and the daring countertop are so inviting. 

Bernie was such a joy to work with, filled with great 

ideas and no fear of doing things a little differently.”

Boaters in the Kawarthas know Young’s Point 

Marina as an idyllic spot located at the 

entrance to Clear Lake, just upstream from 

Lock 27 on the world-famous Trent-Severn Waterway. 

This family-owned business is operated by Jason 

Paris, along with his wife Donna, their son Jordan, 

and a crew of friendly, knowledgeable staff. Over the 

26 years Jason has owned the business, it has grown 

steadily. They now have 35 dock slips and service 

about 500 boats per season. 

Their fully licensed and registered staff mechanic 

can service and repair all types of marine engines 

including Sea-Doo watercrafts and other PWCs. They 

do insurance repairs, propeller rebuilding, boat 

cleaning and repairs. They have boat winterization 

and storage for 300 boats, boat pickup and delivery 

up to 6,000 lbs., and a concrete launch for boats up 

to 40 ft. long. They now have a hydraulic trailer and 

can accommodate larger boats up to 38 feet long for 

winterizing and storage or maintenance. 

Young’s Point Marina is well-known in the area for

Jason says that boating activity has increased on the 

Trent-Severn Waterway and expects this coming summer 

to be the same. “Interest in boating is on the rise – it’s a

...does makeover on family room 


Kerri and Neil had lived in their home for 25 

years and thought it was looking dated. Every 

year for the past few years they’d tackled 

painting and other projects on their own, but were at 

the point where they thought they needed to bring in 

a professional. “We’re at a new stage in our lives with 

our daughter grown, and we thought it was time that 

our home reflected that,” says Kerri. 

Kerri knew about Angela Jones, owner of Lakeshore 

Designs, from when she’d had her shop on George Street 

in Peterborough, and had loved her window displays 

and sense of style. And several of her friends had rooms 

designed by Angela, so when it was time to select 

someone for the project, Kerri knew where to turn. 

A few years ago, Angela had done a makeover on 

the couple’s bedroom, which Kerri describes as a 

“showpiece” on a grey and white palette, with new 

carpeting, bedding and deep reddish brown 

mahogany furniture. 

“The family room is where we spend the majority of 

our time, and since we haven’t had anything done 

there in 20 years, we thought it was long overdue,” 

says Kerri. “I knew that Angela was the one I wanted 

to handle the job.” 

The old fireplace was removed and a new gas 

fireplace with surround and a large, built-in TV have 

been placed together on the wall which is now the 

centrepiece of the room. 

Kerri loves the new colour palette of beige, grey, 

white and black, which carries through on the twotone 

walls, ship lap ceiling, and grey-stained floors 

topped with an accenting area rug. “We love sinking 

into the two swivel club chairs and we enjoy relaxing 

on the reclining leather sofas with their plug-in charge 

stations,” says Kerri. 

The accent pieces that Angela chose, baskets and 

two-level table, tie the room together. “I love what 

Angela did with the patio door – she closed in the 

bottom half with shutters, and framed it with white 

and grey drapery that allows lots of light in through 

the upper part.” 

At a recent family gathering, Kerri’s aunt and uncle 

visited and were blown away by the changes, 

remarking on how different the room looked. “The 

family room is now so warm, inviting and up-to-date, 

and complements the bedroom beautifully,” says Kerri. 

“It’s like night and day compared to how it was before.

Land Trust (KLT) 

has been protecting the 

natural and working 

lands of the Kawarthas 

for future generations. 

As your regional, 

charitable land trust, 

we’re dedicated to 

conserving what makes 

our region so special — 

its natural beauty. We 

could not have achieved 

the conservation 

successes that we have 

without the support 

of our community of 

volunteers. 

In 2001, Kawartha 

Land Trust, then 

known as Kawartha 

Heritage Conservancy, 

was founded by a small group of volunteers who were 

passionate about protecting nature in the Kawarthas. 

From those early days to the present day, volunteer 

contributions have informed every aspect of our work. 

At KLT, we often refer to volunteering as “giving 

the gift of time.” Last year, volunteers gave over 

4,200 hours of their time to KLT to help forward 

conservation in the Kawarthas. 

“Like many charities, Kawartha Land Trust would not 

be able to achieve our goals without the dedication of 

our volunteers,” said Chris Ferguson, KLT’s Volunteer 

Programs Specialist. “Volunteer involvement builds KLT’s 

capacity — providing a variety of skills, experience, 

and diversity of perspectives that only strengthen the 

organization and what we can achieve together.” 

From trustees and board directors ensuring excellent 

governance and strategic oversight, to our operational 

volunteers serving as 

community outreach 

ambassadors, planting 

trees, removing 

invasive plant species, 

creating maps, curating 

and supporting events, 

writing, and much 

more, KLT’s volunteers 

contribute to every 

area of our work.

volunteers, like 

Jenny Fay, choose 

to give their time in 

a variety of ways. 

In the past year, 

Jenny has conducted 

ecological inventories 

on land we hope to 

protect, conducted 

species surveys, 

given out seedlings 

at our Passport to Nature “Trees for All” event, helped 

maintain our walking trails, and more.

“Caring for the land has always been one of my 

passions, which is why I spent my career working in 

Ontario’s provincial park system,” said Jenny. “After 

30 years, I was ready to stop working every day, but 

still wanted to nurture that passion. Volunteering 

with Kawartha Land Trust lets me do that. I have the 

opportunity to explore various natural landscapes, 

meet interesting people, and contribute to projects 

that will help KLT protect its properties for future 

generations.”

Making the Best 

of Your Holiday 

While boating, it’s important to be prepared, carry 

a spare propeller, safety gear, tools and more. Art 

Guest from O.P.S. (Only Propeller Service) says it’s 

also important to inform people about problems with 

ethanol fuels, and the benefits of yearly service and 

proper storage. 

“As many people are aware, there are problems with 

ethanol fuels, regarding their storage and their use in 

recreational vehicles,” he says. “We are seeing more and 

more problems with water in fuel, water being a biproduct 

of phase separation, which can occur in ethanol 

fuels when they are not being used up regularly.” 

He says that if gas is sitting in your tank for periods of 

time not being used, water begins to appear in your 

fuel and fuel system. After longer periods of time, 

eventually even acids are being produced, attacking 

your carburetor and internal fuel systems. Staff at O.P.S. 

have seen aluminum carburetors destroyed from this 

chemical reaction. 

“We are advising all of our customers to use non-ethanol 

fuel or premium fuel, now available as recreational gas 

from some suppliers. We also are recommending the use 

of ethanol stabilizer, which we carry,” he says. 

To properly maintain your recreational vehicle, he 

recommends that a licensed mechanic and/or facility put 

your vehicle to bed for the season by: 

1) Proper fuel stabilization 

2) Oil changes, both engine and gear case (this is cheap 

insurance), and 

3) Proper covering (prevents interior damage of your 

recreation vehicle) 

He also recommends that a proper facility “wake it up” 

for the next season. These few things can save you a lot 

of lost time enjoying your vacation or weekend. 

He says that customers can save a lot of time and 

unwanted expense when they purchase a “new-to-you” 

boat, snowmobile or outboard motor. 

“Don’t just jump in and drive,” he says. “It’s best to 

have a competent shop check it over before irrevocable 

damage is done. Old gas, poor maintenance or no 

maintenance can make your nice purchase just another 

piece of junk.”
