A PLASTIC SPOON MADE OUT OF PAPER
I picked up a throw away ubiquitous white plastic spoon from the railway station
the other day. On a closer inspection it had the words Made from Paper on the
handle.
This wonderful encounter got me thinking about what is (or in this case what I
presumed to be) ‘original’.
For years I simply took for granted the idea of the throw away plastic spoon as
a done deal, a solid foundation of what really ought to be metal, but as its to be
thrown away it is made from plastic, as that’s cheaper!
Then I got thinking about the context of originality in art, indeed this exhibition is
called RE Original Prints and whether what we are looking at in the art gallery is
indeed original.
“Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels
your imagination. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul.
If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable;
originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if
you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not
where you take things from - it’s where you take them to.”
Jim Jarmush.*
This very apt quote from a great artist (who one could say is truly ‘original’) and
pronouncing the thoughts of another great artist, who we could also advance to
being ‘original’, delivers a quandary that is both a dilemma and a virtue.
The idea of the ‘original print’ is an established and generally accepted historic
counterbalance to that of (mere) ‘reproduction’. A further dive into the worlds of
the ‘original, the fake, the false or the reproduced’ brings us back to the riddle of
the Made from Paper plastic spoon, or have I further diversified into a branch of
‘eco-originality?
