We are delighted to present the Isabel’s upcoming 2024-2025 tenth
anniversary season which promises to be a truly exciting celebration. The
season has been curated around the theme of “Inspiration and Alliances,”
the intent of which is to celebrate inspirational retrospectives from the
past ten years, and to explore perspectives for innovative future directions
in programming at the Isabel over the next ten years and beyond.
Building on “Inspiration and Alliances,” the season includes performances
by returning artists, along with new and diverse artists. We are thrilled
to welcome back to the Isabel in June and July 2024 the National Youth
Orchestra of Canada for their residency and concert on July 18, which
officially launches their national tour, and is a bonus event for Early Bird subscribers. Other returning
ensembles in the coming season are Les Violons du Roy with soprano Karina Gauvin and contralto
Marie-Nicole Lemieux, and Tafelmusik, in a special concert dedicated to Tricia Baldwin, beloved
former Director of the Isabel. We are also delighted to welcome back the legendary Branford Marsalis,
pianists Angela Hewitt and Bruce Liu, alongside a debut performance by pianist Misha Dichter.
In addition, we are proud to present debut performances by a diverse array of artists: pianist
Megumi Masaki, cellist Nicolas Altstaedt with pianist Fazil Say, violinist Melissa White with pianist
Pallavi Mahidhara, pianist Michelle Cann with the Imani Winds, the Viano String Quartet with
guitarist MILOŠ, The Kingdom Choir, singer Andrea Baker and composer, conductor, and keyboard
player Howard Moody, VOCES8, Meta4, Près de votre oreille, and the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain.
A highlight of the coming season will be a three-day residency and performance by the Vancouver
Chamber Choir in March, followed by a performance at the end of that month by the Vancouver
Symphony Orchestra.
Indigenization continues to be an important priority in the upcoming season with September
performances by Inuk opera singer Deantha Edmunds with Inuit throat singers, Sylvia Cloutier
and Nancy Mike with the New Orford String Quartet, followed by Jeremy Dutcher featuring music
from his new recording.
We are especially pleased to announce the re-naming of the Isabel’s Karen Hitchcock Rehearsal Hall
as the Karen Hitchcock Recital Hall, which will align with the increased use of this wonderful space
for performances as well as rehearsals. In the upcoming season, the Isabel will offer a new Friday series
of four concerts featuring local artists performing in this intimate setting.
Viano String Quartet
Over its first ten years, the Isabel’s series programming has expanded and this growth has embraced
the increasingly critical realities of Indigenization-Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Anti-Racism.
In the words of the Isabel’s first Director, Jerry Doiron in the Fall of 2014, “The Isabel will become
a consummate storytelling space—stories that will reveal the human condition for what it is:
complex, often confusing and ever beautiful.”
We are ever grateful for the gift of this special place, its traditions, and exciting potential for the
future as we highlight inspirations and alliances in the Isabel’s tenth season.
There are no pianos, backing tracks or banjos, no pitch shifters or electronic trickery, only an
astonishing revelation of the rich palette of orchestration afforded by different-sized ukuleles,
vocal harmonies, and a bit of whistling. Prepare yourselves for a roller coaster ride through
every musical genre. From Abba to ZZ Top, Tchaikovsky to Nirvana, whether it's soul, funk,
classical, country, pop, rock, punk or folk, in the hands of the Ukulele Orchestra, musical
alchemy unites and audiences are transported.
Concerti Virtuosi
Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at 7:30pm
Rachel Podger, director
This program, by a signature Canadian ensemble and
friend of the Isabel, features wonderful examples of
baroque concertos, including Bach’s Concerto for Violin
and Oboe in C Minor, Telemann’s Concerto for 3 Violins
in F Major, and Corelli’s Concerto Grosso no. 1 in D Major.
Tafelmusik’s vibrant colors combine in Vivaldi's vivacious
Chamber Concerto in G Minor, and two blockbuster
concertos by Vivaldi, shine the light on the orchestra’s
bass-line players in what promises to be an inspiring
performance infused with vitality and brilliance.
This concert is dedicated
To see and hear Kingston indie rock outfit
Tiny Horse—led by guitarists and vocalists
Ciara Roberts and Rae Corcoran—is to step
into a place of possibility and freedom.
Their performances are equal parts smalltown
queer cabaret, ‘70s folk-rock rapture,
and Bowie-ish extravaganza. Their music
crackles with John Prine’s rich storytelling
and winking humor, Patti Smith’s punkish
abandon and revelry, and Haim and Taylor
Swift’s melodic brilliance.
KASADOR
Friday, November 22, 2024 at 8:00pm
Kingston band, Kasador, have never been
scared of change. The three friends at
Kasador’s core—Cameron Wyatt (vocals/
guitar), Boris Baker (bass), and Stephen
Adubofuor (drums)—have been through a
lot of it. Years of tumult through the band's
mid-and late-20's have been woven into
something powerful and real: a tight-knit,
sincere, and caring rock and roll band
hitting full sprint. The band has shared
stages with Arkells, July Talk, Sam Roberts
Band, and The Glorious Sons, among others.
A roots-pop artist with a voice that has been
hailed as “raw and powerful,” Alex Mundy has
been writing and performing music for almost a
decade. In 2019, she was selected as one of the
winners of the Isabel’s YGK Emerging Musician
Competition. In her own words: “When I have
something to say, music is my megaphone. The
writing process is my therapy…” Alex is set to
release her debut album in 2024. Her first single
from the album, Where We Are, was recently
featured on WPBS, and the accompanying
music video was featured in the 2023 Kingston
Canadian Film Festival. With songs that exude a
powerful nostalgic quality, indelible melodies, and
lyrical honesty, Alex Mundy is ready to share her
stories on the Isabel stage.
Debut
Chris Brown is a Canadian singer-songwriter
and multi-instrumentalist who now calls Wolfe
Island home. Brown has accompanied dozens
of notable musicians on stage, including
The Barenaked Ladies, The Tragically Hip,
and B.B. King, among many others.
As a duo, Brown is joined by the “lusty
alternative Joni Mitchell” (New York Times) and
“National Treasure” (CBC), Kate Fenner. Brown
and Fenner have been making music together
since their meeting as teenagers in Toronto.
During high school and years following, they
recorded and toured extensively with Toronto’s
Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, whose diaspora
contributes to music far and wide.
They take to the Isabel stage for the first time
alongside American jazz and folk rock bassist,
guitarist, and singer-songwriter, Tony Scherr.
The Shoestring Magic Flute
Sunday, October 20, 2024 at 2:30pm
In the whimsical story based on Mozart’s most famous
opera, Allegra finds a golden flute on her way home
forest. She blows again and out pops Papageno, a
strange bird-catcher with a padlock on his mouth.
Through the power of music and the magic of makebelieve,
Allegra and Papageno embark on an adventure
of sharing and self-discovery involving a four-legged,
two-winged, fire-breathing dragon, and the scary
Queen of the Night. How can Allegra help her new
friend and get home in time for her music lesson? Join
ARTIST TALK
Co-hosted by Blake Wynn,
entrepreneur and art collector
Sunday, September 22, 2024
2:30pm, Performance Hall
Evan Sharma is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist who
works at the intersection of art and science. At the age of twelve,
he was the youngest artist to be accepted into Canada’s largest
juried art show. Evan has used his art to help others, including
having funded over 140,000 meals for Kenyan children. His
exhibit, including pieces from the 2050 Series, envisions the
future of iconic landscapes, contingent on global adoption of
green technologies. Evan's conversation with award-winning
entrepreneur Blake Wynn delves into "My Experiments in Hope,"
his doctrine that positions art as a conduit for change. Join us for
an event weaving creativity, social impact, and the language of
hope into a remarkable tapestry.
The Dutch in the Americas
With footholds in North America,
the Caribbean, South America, and along
the west coast of Africa, the Dutch played a vital, yet
understudied role in the early modern Americas. Via the
West India Company’s transatlantic traffic in raw materials
(beaver pelts, pearls, sugar, gold), refined artistic products,
and people (both willing settlers and enslaved laborers),
the Dutch not only extracted desirable goods and materials,
but imported and contributed to varied visual and material
cultures of mapping and navigation, enslavement, plantation
economies, architecture and city planning across North
and South America, from what is now New York to North
East Brazil. The “Dutch” in the Americas were not a uniform
population but included French Huguenots, Swedes,
Sephardic Jews, allied Indigenous groups and enslaved
Africans. Outlining how the Dutch colonial project in
the Americas both diverged and overlapped with their
competitors, this talk considers the central role these “Dutch”
artists, artworks and material goods played in the Americas,
presenting an alternate view of the colonial Americas.
This program is supported by the Bader Legacy Fund and is in partnership
with Agnes Etherington Art Centre, in annual recognition of Bader Day
on November 15.
