for the love of the arts
Dear FynArts Supporters
Welcome to the twelfth annual FynArts Festival in Hermanus where the arts are celebrated among friends, families and
like-minded festival goers to embrace creativity, skill, talent and expertise.
A heartfelt thank-you to so many who make this ten-day festival possible. We are grateful to our sponsors, patrons,
lifetime and annual friends for their support. The FynArts Development Fund is the sole beneficiary of the festival,
and promotes the arts throughout the year by initiating projects in our local communities.
The hard work, wise counsel and unstinting moral support of our volunteers and advisors play an invaluable role in
keeping the show on the road as does the support from the media which we value highly.
Our festival cannot flourish without the support of the Overstrand Municipality. We thank them for their assistance
and advice in so many ways during the year.
While these supporters form the foundation of the festival, it is the artists, musicians, performers and presenters who
wear the crown. We appreciate and salute your creativity, skills, talent and expertise that make FynArts a top quality
festival.
Appreciation is also due to the following for their contributions to the festival:
Non-executive Advisory Board: Christopher Hope, Mandie van der Spuy, Richard Cock, and Shado Twala.
Management Committee: David Carter (chairman), Frieda Lloyd, Lincoln Wildschut, Adrian Louw and Nhlanhla
Biyela.
At the end, it is the power of teamwork that brings the festival to fruition. Thank you to Chantel Louskitt for
her integrity, enduring dedication and commitment to everything FynArts (and for her never-failing sense of humour
that gets us through many a challenge), to Hedda Mittner for doing a great job on the programme this year and
for lifting this booklet to another level, and to our festival intern Faith Bokolo, for her enthusiastic support.
Welcome to Hermanus FynArts 2024
In closing, whether you are a seasoned FynArts enthusiast or experiencing the festival for the first time,
it is you who bring the buzz and make it all so worthwhile for everyone. In thanking you, we are pleased to again
offer you a memorable experience filled with joy and inspiration.
Festival regards,
Mary Faure

Old Harbour Sunset Launch Concert
FynArts Festival Programme Launch
in the Old Harbour with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra
In 2022, FynArts celebrated its 10th festival with the first unrestricted audiences since 2020. This double milestone
called for a spectacular event. A ‘WOW!’ as Jans Rautenbach, the renowned South African filmmaker, and the first
recipient of the FynArts Legacy Award, would have called it.
Thanks to the goodwill and generosity of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and their talented musicians –
and the iconic setting – that first concert was certainly a WOW! It was followed by an equally successful event in 2023,
marking the launch of the festival programme and the opening of bookings.
We are deeply grateful to Pam Golding Properties Hermanus and the Golding Family for their generous support in
making it possible to present the Old Harbour Concert for the second time last year – and again this year, 2024.
2
There is surely no more joyful way to celebrate the arts and the launch of the festival programme.

Opening Concert
With the FynArts Festival Orchestra and soloist Emmanuel Bach (violin) conducted by Richard Cock
Hermanus FynArts is thrilled to present the outstanding
young violinist, Emmanuel Bach, who will be joining
the FynArts Festival Orchestra for the Opening Concert.
Based in the UK, Emmanuel regularly performs with
esteemed conductors in Europe, the UK, USA and
South Africa, including at the Johannesburg
International Mozart Festival.
The concert starts with the short and bustling Symphony
no 4 by Mozart, followed by his Violin Concerto no 5.
The most elaborate and mature of Mozart’s five violin
concertos, this piece contains Turkish episodes, linking
it to the Turkish invasion of Austria, and Janissary military
music… Mozart was always at the forefront of innovation!
After the interval the orchestra plays Schubert’s charming
Symphony no 5, the joyful and most popular of his early
symphonies.

the Mother City with its fresh and mesmerising choral
experiences. Inspired by the unique biodiversity of
Hermanus, VOX now presents an immersive programme

Bringing together the sublime polyphonic textures of
the Renaissance with spirited folk songs and music
composed for the silver screen, this promises to be
another stand-out performance from a choir that has
gained a reputation for imaginative programming and
innovative performances of seldom-heard or new choral
work.
This unusual trio of flute, marimba/vibraphone and

Reconnecting with his South African roots, UK-based
violinist Emmanuel Bach, accompanied by Jenny Stern
on piano, offers three highly expressive yet very different
works in this recital.
Taking their audience to the gateway to Romanticism
with Beethoven’s Tenth Sonata, you’ll be transported into
a world of sincerity, tenderness and, finally, joy. It is a work
of great thoughtfulness, but also optimism, marking
a pinnacle within his chamber music.
This is followed by Bloch’s extraordinary Second Sonata,
Poème mystique, an intense work inspired by a dream.
The recital concludes with a celebrated showpiece
by Saint-Saëns – his virtuosic Introduction and Rondo
Capriccioso.

and Nerina von Mayer (flute)
Performances
Acclaimed organist and pianist Winand brings his own

comedian and musician Victor Borge’s oeuvre to the
FynArts Festival. The legacy of Victor Borge (1909 – 2000)
stretches far and wide and has influenced countless
artists over the past decades.
Winand has had several sold-out performances of this
carefully curated and highly entertaining tribute show
– a breakthrough production that aims to establish him
in a genre that has made artists like Charl du Plessis,
Rocco de Villiers, and Jonathan Roxmouth household
names. Be prepared for the unexpected and many bursts
of laughter.
Grateful thanks to Ton and Anet Vosloo, Patrons of
FynArts, for their generous sponsorship of this concert.
Put the troubled world aside and join three of Cape
Town’s top musicians for an uplifting evening of
beautiful music inspired by legend and fantasy.
Albie, Pam and Nerina have collaborated for several
years as Viviamo per L’Arte (We Live for Art).

Pieces of Me
Written and Performed by Bo Petersen,
with Chris Petersen on piano
Join these three talented musicians from three different
generations on a musical journey. Together they perform
songs that young and old have grown to love, with
rhythms crossing generations of boundaries, interwoven
with stories that inspire.
The Generation Gaps is a culmination of talent and
artistry audiences can’t resist. Hanna’s deep, sultry voice
and unique storytelling ability, acclaimed jazz pianist
Bram’s quirky nature and moving arrangements, and
Wesley’s impeccable interpretation of soul and rhythm
will ensure that no one is left untouched by this
performance.
After several performances in America and Norway,
acclaimed South African actress Bo Petersen, currently
living in the US, brings her powerful autobiographical play
to FynArts for its South African premiere.
Bo was nineteen years old when she uncovered her
father’s torturous secret. Classified as coloured, he lived
as a white man after marrying Bo’s mother and never told
his wife or any of their five children about his true identity.
It was a secret that, if uncovered, would have had dire
consequences for all of them.

Gordon Froud
Diane Victor is an artist of

for her provocative images that
confront difficult, sometimes taboo,
subjects. Her satirical observations
are a biting critique on contemporary
South African society, on political
corruption, violence, gender
inequality and economic exploitation.
Artist and curator Gordon will talk

artist, and the new monograph,
Diane Victor – Prints, Drawings,
Smoke, published by Mare & Martin,

Are Art and Science
Good Bedfellows?
Mike Bruton
Mike, a scientist with a strong
affinity for art, will discuss the
changing relationship between art
and science through the ages. He will
argue that art and science are two
of humankind’s most creative
endeavours. As they are both
important agents of change,
they benefit from collaboration
and co-opetition without losing
their integrity.
Mike will give examples, inter alia,
of how mathematicians have
inspired artists and how artists,
from painters and writers to actors
and musicians, have helped scientists
to communicate urgent scientific
messages to the public.

The Lost City of
Alexander the Great
Hamilton Wende
Shortly after 9/11, award-winning
journalist, filmmaker and author
Hamilton travelled into northern
Afghanistan with a TV news team
and found himself on the frontlines

On a high mountain that overlooked
the Taliban positions, he discovered
that the area held the ruins of
a 2 000-year-old city founded
by Alexander the Great.
He tells a fascinating illustrated story
of his journey into war, memory and
ancient history, which became the
basis of his novel, House of War.

The Golden Era of the Imperial City
Felicity Jervis
Felicity reveals her ancestral home
and its multi-ethnic people
waltzing through years of fame,
power, glory, social scandals, music,
art and intellectual brilliance, rising
liberalism but growing racism,
secession, assassinations and
invasions, as the great Austrian
Empire stumbled towards wars
and degeneracy.
Story of the City of Music and
Dreams, home of Emperors, The
Waltz King, assassins, secessionists
and a motley of citizens – some
brilliant, some bad, and one who
escaped the wars to live in South
Africa. This 60-minute presentation

and videos.

The Creation
of Sissinghurst
Margaret Abbott
One of the most famous of all
English gardens, Sissinghurst was
created by Vita Sackville-West,
an Edwardian lady, poet and writer
and her husband Harold Nicolson,
author and diplomat. She was more
famous for her garden than any of
her many books.
Delving into her colourful and
unconventional past as well as
her flamboyant family, Vita was as
well known for her lovers as for
her remarkable garden.
Today Sissinghurst is the most visited
garden in all of England and it is still
breathtaking as well as original,
just like its creator.

The Making of a Musical Career
Kutlwano Masote
talks to Christopher Hope
Kutlwano Masote began as a brilliant
young cellist. He is today a performer,
producer, conductor, impresario,
composer and radio presenter.
He has worked with a dizzying range
of musical artists, from Ladysmith
Black Mambazo to Yehudi Menuhin.
And it is his association with Yehudi
Menuhin, also a great friend of
Christopher Hope, that begins
a conversation about what it takes
to make a successful musical career:
talent, courage and sheer damn luck.

Some Nudes
I have Known
Felicity Jervis
A light-hearted historical and often
hysterical personal introduction
by Felicity to some people – not all
beautiful – who took their kit off
to be painted and sculptured by
world-famous artists, facing ridicule,
outcry, ex-communication, even
demonization yet finally, fame.
Behind the scenes of Lady Godiva,
The Duchess of Alba, Titian and
his strawberry blondes, Nureyev,
Goya, Picasso, Richard Avedon,
Michaelangelo’s David, the nude
Olympians, the hidden Pompeian
‘pleasure paintings’ and the famous

The Stories
behind Hymns
Bevan Sylvester
Hymns hold a special place in the
hearts and lives of many people.
Sacred songs have been written
throughout history. Through them
people find solace, inspiration and
a profound connection to something
greater than themselves.
If you have ever wondered about
the story behind so many well-loved
hymns – why they were written and
under what circumstances – then
join Bevan, the new minister
at the United Church, who will share
this topic that is close to his heart.
This session will include some music
and song.

Blood
and Silver
Jan Glazewski
As a retired academic, Jan decided
to pursue his childhood dream to
recover the family silver buried in a
forest in former Poland, now Ukraine.
Jan’s father had hastily buried the
treasure on the family’s estate at the
onset of World War II, before fleeing
the oncoming Russian army – and
eventually ending up in South Africa.
Armed only with a rough map
hand-drawn by his father, and
accompanied by two dubious
Ukrainian metal detector men and
his niece, Layla, Jan set off in search
of the proverbial needle in a haystack.
Many misadventures ensued, as well
as unexpected discoveries.

Orchestral
Ambitions
Kutlwano Masote
Between WWII and 1994, black
artists living under Apartheid were
deliberately excluded from
participating in orchestral music
and other Western classical arts.
While white South Africans were
benefiting from state-sponsored arts
programmes, it was left to church
programmes and music centres
championed by black pioneers
to keep music education and
instrument tuition active.
Conductor, cellist and broadcaster
Kutlwano will look at how musicians
from these projects went on to
conquer international music stages,
who the new pioneers are, and how
we can work towards building
a thriving orchestral landscape.

Introduced
by Anton Leach, Director
British author Richard Peirce hunts
for the truth in this award-winning
feature documentary and uncovers
a shocking lion processing industry
that is threatening the survival of the
king of the beasts.
On his mission to discover how lions
became cows, Richard leads
the dramatic adventure from lion
farms in South Africa, to wildlife
traffickers in Laos and Vietnam.
The film was written, directed
and produced by South African-
New Zealand duo, Anton Leach
and Jasmine Duthie, who have made
Hermanus their home.
Anton will introduce the film before

Early Cape Wine Farms:
Constantia and Vergenoegd
Joanne Gibson
While researching the history of
Vergenoegd Löw, award-winning
wine writer Joanne realised that
this remarkably intact old Eerste
River wine farm was owned during
the 18th century by the same family
who produced Constantia, the worldfamous
wine enjoyed by the likes of
Casanova, Frederick the Great, Marie
Antoinette and George Washington.
Although official records suggest
that Vergenoegd did not produce any
wine during this period, 18th-century
art and architecture have helped her
to prove a conspiracy theory about
legendary Constantia wine.

Africans will want to know whether
we have the political leadership in

geopolitical shifts.

to choose between East and West,

Castaways
on Skeleton Coast
James Gray
On the night of 29 November 1942,
the British cargo liner the MV
Dunedin Star was shipwrecked
while making its way down the west
coast of Africa with 106 souls on
board. Against the odds the
passengers managed to make it
to the desolate shore, leaving most
of the crew floundering on the fatally
wounded ship.
What happened thereafter was
drama on the highest scale as
the South African authorities
scrambled to reach this Godforsaken,
inaccessible upper region
of the Skeleton Coast. James Gray
brings his story-telling skills to bear
on this epic rescue mission.
SUN 16 11:00 – 12:00
Growing
Legends
Nick Dall and Matthew Blackman
South Africa has a long tradition
of people who fought courageously
with deeds, words and olive
branches, to enable us to share
this land in peace. We often think of
Mandela’s political genius as unique:
a mix of force, negotiation, charm
and conciliation. But authors Nick
and Matthew will argue that this
tradition grew from the rich political
soils laid long before Mandela was
born – and is still alive today.
From Moshoeshoe, Olive Schriener
and Gandhi, to Cissie Gool, Sailor
Malan, and Steve Biko, right through
to Thuli Madonsela, the Mandela
approach of combative conciliation
makes South Africa almost exclusively
unique.

The South African
Musical
Norman Smuts
With its strong theatrical and choral
traditions, South Africa has enjoyed
remarkable success in the universally
popular world entertainment field
that is the musical.
In this all-encompassing presentation
of original/indigenous South African
musicals, Norman will display the
background to these achievements.
He will also look at how this art form
reflects the culture and history of the
various peoples of our nation and
how it was instrumental in changing
the country’s political landscape.

The End of Eden
Adam Welz
Penny will talk to fellow author Gail
Gilbride about her latest historical
novel. The Woman at the Wheel is
based on the real life of Bertha Benz,
whose husband Carl built the first
commercially-viable automobile,
which eventually evolved into the
Mercedes-Benz marque.
Like so many other women, Bertha
lived largely in her husband’s
shadow, but her contributions are
now celebrated in this inspiring story
of perseverance, resilience, and love.
Ernest Shackleton’s ship Endurance
was discovered perfectly preserved
below the Antarctic ice in 2022,
106 years after it sank. Darrel
Bristow-Bovey has had a personal
connection to Endurance ever since
his father first told him that he sailed
south with Shackleton.
History enthusiast James Gray will
talk to Darrel about this stirring story,
interwoven with very personal
memoir to tell an inspiring tale
about hope and great beauty, about
how to love and how to survive.
Most media coverage of climate
breakdown focuses on humans.
Very little attention is paid to its
effects on the millions of wild
species that share the planet with us,
even though most of them are more
vulnerable than we are.
Adam will talk to environmental
historian Kobus du Pisani about this
controversial book, described by the
New York Times as “disturbing and
important… a calm depiction of
catastrophe, as if Vermeer had
decided to paint some kind of
terrifying slow-motion atrocity.”

kept diaries. In Bullet In the Heart,
Beverley has retrieved the forgotten
fates of these brothers in war.
In 1986, seven young men were shot

Cape Town. In Hunting the Seven,
the author reveals who plotted
their assassination.
Christopher will talk to Beverley
about how both books celebrate
the saving grace of memory. Only by
reviving these forgotten lives do we
remember who we are.

New South Africa
– New Censors
Christopher Hope
Despite international warnings, the
South African Parliament has passed
new legislation that stifles the free
expression of ideas, under the pretext
of stamping out ‘hate speech’. This
censorship promises to be as absurd
and as draconian as any we knew
under the old regime.
It is all too familiar because we have
been here before.
With criminal penalties being
imposed on broad and ill-defined
categories of expression, speaking or
writing the ‘wrong words’ could land
you in jail for years.

uncertainties never quite do resolve

how bearing witness to the stories
of our country and of our time has
led to a life of deep purpose and
meaning.

FynArts Development Fund
Promoting the arts across cultures 174 582 NPO | PBO 930070839
FynArts community programmes serve an increasing number of practising and aspiring creatives living in Zwelihle,
Mount Pleasant and Hawston through the FynArts Development Fund, sole beneficiary of the FynArts Festival. The main
objective of the Fund is to promote the arts through education and skills development, and to provide opportunities for
young people across a diverse range of disciplines to showcase their art.
We continue to enjoy our collaboration with teachers from most of the local primary schools. We especially appreciate
their support in fostering the love of singing together, and the joy the concert brings to their packed audiences. More
recently we have joined forces with staff and learners at the Creative Space and with the CBD Revitalisation Cluster.
Events and workshops for individuals and small groups of creatives continue to grow. Monthly networking and support
‘coffee mornings’ for visual artists have also been initiated. After this year’s festival similar support for performing artists
is being planned.

Sculpture on the Cliffs 2024
Welcome to the eleventh showing of the Sculpture on the Cliffs public art exhibition.
Visitors to this open-air gallery are invited to immerse themselves in the awe-inspiring scenery where art meets nature
and pause, engage and reflect on the world around us.
Each artwork has been specifically designed and selected to be displayed and strategically placed on the cliffs.
Whether you are an art enthusiast or novice, or seeking inspiration or a moment of reflections, or simply taking a stroll
with your dog along the cliffs we hope you will be uplifted, inspired and challenged by these artworks.
Of the eleven invited artists, five have previously taken part in the exhibition.

Exhibitions – Sculpture on the Cliffs
Janko de Beer
Janko’s series of horse themed
sculptures, ‘Equus’, is based on
the mythical relationship between
humans and horses. The sculptures
are conceived and constructed
from dried bull kelp collected from
surrounding beaches, before being
moulded and cast.
Ian Redelinghuys
Ian creates sculptures from
a selection of repurposed metal
scrap, chopped, crushed, cut,
and accidentally formed, in
an abstracted processional whole.
This work invites contemplation
on themes of transformation and
impermanence.
Gordon Froud
Gordon is an artist, curator and
academic known for his use
of a wide range of materials and
found objects. His recent bodies
of work explore Sacred Geometry
as sculptural form.
Nkhensani Rihlampfu
Nkhensani’s work celebrates
humanity and the situations that
we overcome. Seeking to comment
on social, political and personal
issues, he focuses on human
figures, using calico rope as
his sculpting medium.
Wehrner Lemmer
Wehrner’s work portrays the intense
calm that nature affords him.
The tubular curves present in many
of his works represent the cycles
of life, both human but more so
the natural world.
Jaco Sieberhagen
Jaco combines steel and
colour to create his own distinct
visual vocabulary through which
he gives form to his thoughts and
observations, to take the visitor
to a space where they will pause
to observe and contemplate.
60
Paul Stein
In his work Paul aims to alter
the static nature of sculpture,
suggesting movement by
the interplay of forms, challenging
the viewer to use their imagination
and thus form a connection with
the work.
Strijdom van der Merwe
Strijdom’s sculptures result
from years of observation,
experimentation and knowledge
of material. Each site presents
its own challenges. An artist must
adapt and as much as possible,
each piece must be site specific.
Mark Swart
Mark works to create a balance
between the spiritual and physical
world. His philosophy is that form
follows function. He uses only
the essential lines in his design,
uniting imagination and sensation
with physical matter.
Francois Visser
Francois is best known for his
figurative sculptures and recurring
thematic symbolism. His narrative
works explore transcendental
thought through materials such as
bronze, aluminium, ceramic, steel,
wood and cement.
Jean Theron Louw
“The purpose of my work is
to awaken a consciousness of
our connectivity with the planet as
a whole. I want to draw my viewer
into moments of self-reflection
– soul searching – for this is what
makes us truly human.”

FynArts – Festival Artist
Mikhael Subotzky
Photographer
Curated by Subotzky Studio
and Goodman Gallery
“At the heart of my work is a fixation with
revealing the gap between what is
presented (and idealised) and what is
hidden, coupled with a desire to pull apart
and reassemble the schizophrenia of
contemporary existence”.
Mikhael’s first body of photographic work,
Die Vier Hoeke (The Four Corners), was
an in-depth study of the South African
penal system. Umjiegwana (The Outside)
and Beaufort West extended this
investigation to the relationship between
everyday life in post-apartheid South Africa
and the historical, spatial, and institutional
structures of control.
His works are found in public and private
collections around the world including
the MoMA, Centre Georges Pompidou,
Tate Modern and South African National
Galleries (SANG), among others.
This exhibition draws from his early
photographic works as well as more recent
related collage and works on canvas.
Mikhael was born in 1981 in Cape Town,
South Africa, and is currently based in
Johannesburg.

Opening: SAT 8 June at 14:00
Guest Speaker: Bina Genovese
Venue: FynArts Gallery
Mikhael Subotzky’s works are the results of his
fractured attempts to place himself in relation to the
social, historical, and political narratives that surround
him.
As an artist working in film, video installation and
photography, as well as more recently in collage
and painting, Subotzky engages critically with
contemporary politics of representation.
We are grateful to the Goodman Gallery for
their support and collaboration.

Chromatic Clay
Curated by Liz Coates
Firing a pot or other artwork is the
point of no return. What happens in
the kiln is irreversible and, to a large
extent, unpredictable. Until it enters
the kiln, clay can be reclaimed,
broken up, soaked, and reformed
into raw material, but in the kiln clay
becomes ceramic.
In the following pages you will
view some of the unique ceramic
artworks created by twelve highly
skilled contemporary artists.
Each has their own artistic approach
and specific language to address
their audience in the way they
want their work to speak and
to communicate their own
distinctive meaning.

Catherine Brennon
Through her artwork Catherine
pursues a connection with people
beyond her circle, her culture, or
her spoken language. She wants
to move her viewers, and remind
them how wonderful nature and
life are.
Sandile Cele
Sandile, simultaneously playful
and culturally layered, presents
an authentic and original voice.
Isiqhaza represents the fusion
of traditional lifestyle and rituals
embodied in artefacts, together
with sculptural forms and
functional objects.
Mark Chapman
Mark’s work is fun and whimsical,
a combination of cartoon and
Pop Art. ‘This body of work is
all about colour. Fun without
boundaries to bring a smile to
the faces of the viewers.’
66
Ella Cronje
Through Ella’s consistent interest
in myths, fables and legends
she allows the unexpected to guide
her into a fantastic psychological
arena – a fertile mind-space that
facilitates the continuous birth of
highly intricate symbolic sculptures.
Gretchen Crots
Gretchen’s work challenges
the rules of conduct surrounding
femininity and masculinity,
identity, morality, and authority.
Her use of profanities, sayings
and opinions lure in her audience
through a striking image and
vibrant colour.
Dale Lambert
Dale is a contemporary ceramic
artist who has a clear vision
of the colours and forms that
inspire her. Her aim is to create
vessels that are beautiful and
unique.
Carin Dorrington
Whether ceramic vases or
sculptures, Carin’s bold form and
bright, contrasting colour are
playful representations of everyday
objects, plant forms, organic
and abstract shapes that bring joy
and brightness into any space.
Adela Friedmann
Adela creates whimsical
characters that emerge from
her subconscious. These quirky
figurines in stoneware clay and
underglazes reveal underlying
truths about aspects of this world
while simultaneously delighting
the audience in unexpected ways.
Charmaine Haines
Charmaine works primarily
with vessels within the realm of
figurative clay embracing classical
shapes. The embellished clay
surface is further enhanced by
simplified abstractions of nature,
together with line, colour and
texture.
Exhibitions – Ceramics
Sonia Kastner
Sonja is currently exploring
the process of photo lithographic
printing. This technique allows
her to combine her love of design
and colour to produce one-off
quirky works with hidden
messages about the things
that inspire her.
Hennie Meyer
For Hennie, clay is a passion
and obsession, and his preferred
means of communication.
‘Finding the perfect balance
between form, surface and
structure is always a challenge,
an emotional struggle.’
Margot Rudolph
Margot draws inspiration from
Africa’s vibrancy. She uses
stoneware clay and the traditional
coiling technique combined with
colourful stains to capture Africa’s
vibrancy as she creates unique
works of art.

Exhibitions – Bonsai
Venue: The Marine Hotel Courtyard – Pool area
Open: Daily from 8 – 17 June from 09:00 – 17:00
View these magnificent specimens of an ancient art form that was first introduced from
China to Japan in the 6th to 7th century. This fine art is now recognised globally.
The exhibition will include a selection of some of the finest Bonsai trees from the region,
all locally grown in the Overstrand. A diverse range of planting styles and species will be on
display, with many species being indigenous to South Africa.
The Japanese word Bonsai literally means ‘plantings in tray’ although the modern meaning
of the word goes a bit further: ‘miniature, artistic tree in a pot’. (Master Bonsai – Rudi Adam)
Kujira or ‘whale’ in Japanese is the apt name for the Bonsai Club in the Overstrand. Some local bonsai experts will
be in attendance to discuss how to join the bonsai club, get involved, fall in love with the little trees, or to just enjoy
the exhibition.
There is also a Beginner’s Bonsai Workshop at the Eatery Restaurant on WED 12 June (see details on P36).
Booking essential.
