Welcome 

This year is flying along but sadly it’s been a little soggier 

than we’d hoped. Easter was a classic British wash out, but 

we live in hope. 

To kick start (a hopefully) sunny summer we have plenty of 

offers to help drive footfall and transaction value. Offering 

customers something a little different can be a terrific way 

to encourage upselling and improve loyalty. Check out our

Our new Soave is complex and rich, the work of three 

passionate Italian sisters, dedicated to producing food 

friendly wines, which show the best of what Italy has to 

offer. Another new addition is the Assyrtiko, our first wine 

from Greece and ideal for coastal, seafood lunches! Moving 

onto Portugal, allow us to tempt you to the incredible value, 

Corte Alta, a rich, full bodied and velvety red, ideal with a 

BBQ or burgers. 

If your customers love Aperol (who doesn’t?!), why not try 

Chandon Garden Spritz? This premium pre-made aperitivo 

is delicious, made with Seville oranges, blended with 

traditional method sparkling wine. It’s a super quick serve 

as it can be poured directly over ice, served in a balloon or 

wine glass with a slice of orange and rosemary.

On June 5th we celebrate World Environment Day with a 

range of Organic wines. Customers are often looking for 

ways to lessen their impact on the environment and I can’t 

think of a better way to do good than by enjoying a lovely 

glass of wine or two… 

In June we’re joining the rest of the English wine trade 

and celebrating English Wine Week from 15th – 23rd. With 

our extensive English Wine range, you shouldn’t have any 

difficulty locating a winery a stones throw from your door. 

Adding a local wine to your list is a great way to make 

the most of seasonal trade with many customers open to 

paying more for a local wine option.

Sauvignon

Sauvignon Blanc remains one of the world’s 

most recognisable grape varieties; whether 

from its heartland in the eastern Loire 

Valley, its newer found fame in New Zealand 

and even Cloudy Bay’s quirky take on oak 

ageing their 100% Sauvignon Blanc Te 

Koko, a practice more commonly found with 

Chardonnay. 

Whilst Sauvignon Blanc is best known in the 

renowned Loire appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly 

Fumé, venture just 30k to the hugely underrated 

town of Menetou Salon where you will find wines 

that are bursting with citrus fruit and ripe pineapple. 

If you are a lover of French Sauvignon Blanc, then this 

is a must try. 

For the more traditional New World Sauvignon 

Blanc lover, it doesn’t get much better than Orchard 

Lane from the famed Marlborough region in the 

north of the South Island. Boasting ripe fruit and 

oozing tropical richness, this is a superb example of 

the region. Chile’s Central Valley is home to some 

deliciously crisp and easy drinking Sauvignon 

Blanc, ideal for gentle sipping with or without food. 

Translated as ‘who knows?’ Sepa Moya hints at the 

nature of the wine within; cheeky and carefree yet 

made with serious intent resulting in superb value 

and quality.

Pinot Grigio Day 

The humble Pinot Grigio grape is among the 

most popular wines in the UK. Traditionally 

from Italy, it is grown around the world, 

from places like Romania, Chile and New 

Zealand. 

With Pinot Grigio being a must have on most 

wine menus, we know it well for its easy drinking 

nature, simplistic profile of apple, citrus and 

floral bouquet. Well, this is Pinot Grigio in its 

basic form, but it can actually deliver much 

more; with rosé Pinot Grigio giving fabulous 

value for money when looking for a fresh, dry, 

elegant summer rosé; to the style of Pinot Gris 

which highlight the aromatic, spicy quality of 

the grape. What most people don’t know, is that 

Pinot Grigio/Gris is actually permitted in the

Our Vouvray from the family run Cherreau Carré 

is medium-dry with a lifted floral bouquet, apply

work for the conversation of South Africa’s wild

Jeremy’s outstanding Old Vine Chenin has a 

creamy texture, due to the use of new oak, and

Rivalry is the story of twin towns in the heart of 

Swartland, a healthy dose of rivalry for the finest 

vineyards and the harmony of a perfectly balanced 

glass. Unwooded and unpretentious, the Rivalry 

Chenin Blanc, sustainably crafted from protected 

bush-vine Chenin Blanc, offers intense tropical 

flavours, a sumptuous fruit palate, well-balanced 

by a crisp, fresh finish, with extended lees contact 

giving added complexity. 

Chenin Blanc is a hugely versatile grape 

variety, whose high acidity enables it to 

produce wines that range from bone dry to 

lusciously sweet and sparkling. 

Whilst the heartland of Sauvignon Blanc is the 

eastern Loire Valley around the towns of Sancerre 

and Menetou Salon, Chenin Blanc hails from the 

central Loire Valley, around the towns of Angers, 

Saumur and Tours. It has now made its second 

home in South Africa where the wines tend to be on 

the drier side but with added lees contact and use of 

wood. The town of Vouvray, north of the river Loire 

to the east of Tours, is testament to the versatility

Wine Week 

The ethos at Knightor winery is 

uncompromising and innovative. Founded 

by Adrian Derx in 2011, head winemaker 

David Brocklehurst and his team are 

peeling back the oft-associated elitism of 

wine, whilst championing the complexity 

and enjoyment to be had from our cool 

climate grapes. 

Situated above St Austell Bay with vineyards near 

Portscatho and Looe, it is a bustling enclave of 

winemaking, an events space and emerging foodie 

destination. Knightor looks to capture the delicate 

aromas and flavours of the grapes producing 

premium quality still and sparkling wines in small 

batches. 

The cool climate and low yields allow them to 

produce lighter, fruitier, lower abv wines with 

good acidity that are refreshing as an aperitif and 

shockingly good with food. Minimal intervention 

means all the wines are vegan friendly, low in 

sulphites and any sweetness comes from fruit, not 

sugar. The results are often beautiful and always 

ephemeral, like the most unique experiences with 

the delicate lightness that is the hallmark of the best 

English wines. The breadth and range of tastes is 

surprisingly wide as they push the boundaries of wine 

into the apéritif and cocktail space with vermouths 

and spritzes.

Polgoon Vineyard 

John and Kim Coulson purchased Polgoon 

in 2002 after working for many years 

as fish merchants in Newlyn. The land 

had been derelict for over ten years, and 

previously had been a flower farm. 

The harsh reality of growing grapes in Cornwall, is 

that despite the natural shelter, a great microclimate 

and the proximity to the sea (meaning frost damage 

risk is low,) the region’s relentless rain would always 

pose a high risk. Ready for the challenge, the 

Coulson’s ordered 3,500 vines, which were planted 

the following springtime in 2004. Initial plantings 

were of Rondo, Pinot Noir Précoce, Seyval Blanc and 

Ortega. John and Kim’s determination resulted in 

quick reward after a great first harvest in 2006. 

The first vintage to be made went on to achieve 

the Best Still Rosé trophy in the UKVA awards the 

following year. 

John is a self-taught winemaker, through studying 

a huge amount of books, internet resources and 

shared knowledge from other producers. Because 

of Polgoon’s early foray into growing and making 

wines, the steep learning curve has been pivotal to 

their success. It forced John to adapt and develop his 

winemaking principles based on what can actually be 

done in Cornwall with wine. As such, a growing range 

of precise and expressive still and sparkling wines 

have been formed. The signature of these are delicate 

with clean, English fruit expression. 

Polgoon Seyval Blanc Sparkling | Cornwall 

A single variety, single estate, rather special sparkling 

from Polgoon. A flirt with green pear on the nose 

followed by delicate citrus notes. Crisp and lively, 

a perfect accompaniment to Cornish 

seafood and shellfish.

Pinot 

Noir 

Many people in the wine industry have a love affair 

with Pinot Noir and it is often described as the 

‘Holy Grail’ of grape varieties, but for others it is 

often misunderstood, “It’s a bit thin”, is one of 

the comments that we hear at tastings. This is, in 

part, due to the fact that the UK market has been 

flooded with powerful, blockbusting reds from the 

New World, so anything lighter can often get lost 

in a tasting line-up. If you like a red that is more 

delicate, elegant, and something you can have a 

couple of glasses over lunch without feeling the 

need to go for a snooze afterwards, then perhaps 

it’s time to give Pinot Noir a try. 

So why are Pinot Noir’s lighter than most other 

reds? Well, Pinot Noir is a particularly thin-skinned 

grape variety, and as colour and tannin are 

extracted from the grape skins in the winemaking 

process, thin skinned varieties like Pinot Noir 

produce wines that are lighter in colour, body, 

and tannin. The thin skins also make the grapes 

susceptible to extremes of temperature and 

weather, which means that Pinot Noir vineyards 

are usually planted in cooler regions and climates, 

once again aiding the production of a lighter style 

of wine. Now don’t take this lack of deep colour 

or lighter body to mean that the wine is somehow 

inferior, don’t even take it to mean that it has a less 

intense flavour. Just that it’s not always as obvious 

as its thicker-skinned counterparts and sometimes 

you just need a little bit of time with it to fully 

appreciate its delicate flavour profile. 

Top Tip: In the hot summer months, try putting your 

Pinot Noir in the fridge. 

Here we explore three very different examples of 

Pinot Noir, from vineyards located in the heights of 

the Andes to the grape’s heartland in Burgundy. 

France 

Vallet Frères Bourgogne Pinot Noir | France 

Vallet Frères was founded in 1864 and is now in the 

hands of the fourth generation of the family. Grapes are 

hand-harvested and sourced from several parcels from 

premium vineyard sites in the Meursault and Gevrey- 

Chambertin regions of Burgundy. Since yeasts are an 

expression of the individual vintage and vineyard, only 

the natural grape yeasts are used for the fermentation. 

The wine is then aged in oak barrels for 16-18 months, 

of which 20-30% is well toasted new oak. A pretty, 

translucent ruby colour with earthy, strawberry fruit and 

a light pepperiness on the nose. Mouthwatering acidity 

balances the moderate gentle ripe tannins and elegant, 

pure, somewhat savoury red fruit. This is a wine to truly 

savour and get to know over a few glasses.

El Viejo del Valle Pinot Noir | Chile 

Chile is usually thought of as being a hot country, but the 

higher you go into the Andean foothills, or the further 

south you travel into Patagonia, you can find plentiful 

cool climate vineyards perfect for cultivating Pinot 

Noir. ‘El Viejo del Valle’ or ‘The Old Man of the Valley’ 

is sourced from a small Hacienda in the Andes where 

glacial streams and pure mountain air allow the grapes 

to express their natural fruit characters. The result – a 

deliciously long, bright, textural Pinot. Summer fruits of 

redcurrant, raspberry and wild strawberries on the nose 

follow through to a juicy palate. A touch of oak adds spice 

and smoky complexity. 

Vieille Monnaie Pinot Noir | France 

A unique take on Pinot Noir from two growers' 

plantings in the sun-drenched vineyards of the Southern 

Languedoc. A small portion of the wine (around 15%) 

spends some time in oak to give added character and 

weight. This southern French example is fuller than 

Pinot Noir from Burgundy due to the additional heat 

and sunshine. It has a warm, rich nose with aromas of 

dark wild cherry and just a hint of toasty oak. The palate 

is nicely balanced with an exciting, savoury bitterness 

provided by ripe, tasty tannins.
