The first thing Vanessa Carvin does
when she arrives on the small island
off the coast of Ireland is change her
name. To the locals, she will be Willow
Hale. The second is to shave her head
... no longer shoulder length blonde,
it’s now cropped and grey, more
in keeping with a solitary outsider
escaping Dublin to live a hermetic
existence in a small cottage, and not a
notorious woman trying to get away
from the media after her husband
committed a crime - one they think
she is guilty of, too. Escaping her old
life might seem like a good idea but
the choices she has made throughout
her marriage have consequences.
Here, on the island, Vanessa must
reflect on what she did, and did
not, do. Only then can she discover
whether she is worthy of finding
peace at all. Water by John Boyne ...
a story of a woman coming to terms
with the demons of her past and
finding a new path forward. Penguin
It’s 2050. A climate-changed world,
where humans and digital devices
are closely entwined. It’s a world filled
with natural disasters, drought, famine
and floods. People are displaced as
new immigration laws are put into
effect, and the gap between the
haves and have nots widens. Future
Imperfect by Babette Gallard is
the story of a family determined to
be together ... despite the horrific
obstacles in their way ... exhaustion,
terror, the xenophobia of people
struggling to protect their increasingly
scarce resources. Thought-provoking,
this novel raises the question of what
may happen to our world in the nottoo-distant
future. LightEye

Voice
of an angel
Singer-songwriter Jemma Kate Badenhorst has thrown herself into her career as
an artist and creates music that is deeply personal.
Bubbly and warm, Jemma’s passion for music is evident
in the way she talks about her journey – one that has led
her to stages around the country. She has always had a
passion for performing and says she danced throughout
her school career, originally starting with ballet, tap and
modern, and moving onto Latin and then Freestyle. In her
matric year, she competed in the
South African Championships and
was awarded second place. Soon
after that, she entered the world of
professional dancing.
Jemma moved to Cape Town to
study, and in 2013 her performing
career really took off when she
landed a role in The Rocky Horror
Picture Show at the Fugard Theatre.
She then spent some time working
as a singer on the MSC cruise
ships, before returning to Durban
and joining the Barnyard Theatre,
first as a dancer and then a singer.
During this time, she travelled and
performed with the company, and
met her husband Nico who was also
with the Barnyard at the time as a
bass player. Although they loved the
experience, there came a time when
Jemma and Nico realised it was time
to create their own music. “We were just ready,” she admits.
“Nico began writing all my music and I decided to focus a
lot on my singing and my music career.”
In 2021, Jemma and Nico welcomed their first baby and
she took a break from singing as she adjusted to life as a
mom. Last year, she felt ready to really throw herself back
into her work and released three songs, Home, Sweet
Love and Breaking Through, all of which are on local radio
stations now. Knowing that her music is out in the world
feels amazing, if a little daunting. “Everything I write is quite
personal,” she says. “Everybody gets a bit of insight into
your life, so it’s a vulnerable thing.”
Juggling a work-life balance with family isn’t always easy,
but Nico is her biggest supporter, especially since she
became a mother. “My husband
has been so supportive,
encouraging me to still
dance and perform, and still
do stuff that I love,” she says.
“Motherhood is so consuming
and it can take everything out
of you. I wouldn't have been
able to continue my career if my
husband wasn't so supportive.”
Besides writing and performing
her music, Jemma does mobile
theatre shows for corporates
and other events. She is also the
founder and owner of Freedom
Dance Studio and offers classes
at FITPOD at the Ballito Lifestyle
Centre, as well as in Umhlanga.
“I was very intentional about
being welcoming to anybody,”
she says. “I really wanted to
create a community of women, supporting women. I don't
care if you're doing it right or wrong, I just want you to
have fun!”
Professionally, her goal this year is to focus specifically on
her own music and show concepts, but the most exciting
prospect is growing her family. Jemma is due with her
second child this month, and is excited about what the
future holds.
After struggling with
depression and addiction
for many years, Nikita
Schmeltzer has turned
her life around and found
her true purpose in
motherhood.
Text: Jennifer Campbell Photograph: KELLY PRETORIUS
ikita is the proud owner
of The Artisan Hair Studio
in Salt Rock, a space she
has created with love. “At
my shop, I want to serve people,”
she says. “I want people to feel good
about themselves, to feel valued and
appreciated.” She opened the salon
at the end of last year, and being able
to run her own business represents
a huge milestone for her, having
been through recovery for substance
abuse and dealing with profound
childhood trauma.
Nikita spent the early years of her
childhood in an unstable home, and
when she was just 14 years old, was
admitted to rehab for depression.
Although she thrived at school, doing
particularly well at art and sport,
she says she never really felt like she
belonged. After school, while studying
hairstyling, she began using cocaine
and became increasingly wrapped
up in the world of drugs and alcohol.
“I was in a very vulnerable place at
the time and my life spiralled, “she
explains. “I realise now that I hadn’t
worked through my childhood issues.”
12 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga May 2024
It was at this time that Nikita fell pregnant, and with her
dad’s help, she returned to her family home in Kokstad.
Becoming a single mom wasn’t easy, but it shifted the
course of her life completely. “Today I have a beautiful
11-year-old daughter,” she says. “She’s my saving grace. If it
wasn’t for her, I probably wouldn’t have made it. I believe
God sent her to me through that pain to save me.”
Nikita slowly but surely started to rebuild her life. “When
that little girl was born, I took one look at her and
everything changed,” she says. “Bringing up a child by
myself has been so humbling and rewarding.” She opened
a small salon in Kokstad and met her husband Chesney,
who provided her with the love and support she needed.
When Chesney was offered a job in Australia, Nikita and
her daughter joined him, but when they returned home
to renew their visas in 2020, they found themselves
stuck in South Africa because of Covid-19 restrictions.
Lockdown, along with financial and emotional stress
took a toll on the couple and both of them turned to
substances. Chesney booked himself into a rehab facility
near Ballito, and this was a turning point for Nikita. “I was
left to cope by myself when I actually needed just as
much healing and help,” she admits.
Having hit rock bottom emotionally, she drove to Grace
Family Church, where she eventually reached out for help.
There, she joined Project Exodus, a recovery programme,
and has been part of the group ever since. “My healing
journey started there,” she says. “Through Project Exodus,
I realised that the drugs and the drinking were never
the problem. The true problems are trauma, emotional
abuse and abandonment issues. I had a lot of things to
work through. I’m still on a journey of healing, but now I
have the coping skills.” Nikita credits her faith, as well as
the support of her husband, dad and step-mom for her
success in turning her life around.
Nikita and Chesney have been in recovery for over
two years. In November last year, with Chesney’s
encouragement, Nikita opened her new salon. “It’s a new
chapter of hope and restoration,” she says. “I hope when
people visit, they feel the true joy that I’m trying to reflect.”
Through her work, she’s found a sense of community and
is motivated by the people she meets and connects with
every day.
Having been through her own journey of healing,
Nikita urges others to reach out to others who might
be struggling. “If we see people suffering, we need to
ask if they’re ok,” she says. “We don’t know what people
are going through behind closed doors. If we’ve got the
capability to help someone, we should do it.”
It’s also important to her that she breaks the cycle of
trauma and addiction for her daughter. “We can’t raise
strong women if we don’t heal ourselves first,” she says. “It’s
hard to face our wounds but we have to open them up to
find freedom.”
A calling for care
Palliative nurse Rebecca Howie has been working with Beacon of Care for the last five
years. She finds meaning in supporting patients (and their families) with serious illness.
Text: Jennifer Campbell
ost people are uncomfortable talking about
death, but for Rebecca, her work in end-of-life
care is deeply rewarding. “People ask me a lot
how I do this work, and it is hard. It takes a lot
of courage to accompany families during a difficult time”
she admits.
Originally from New Zealand, Rebecca found herself
drawn to nursing at a young age. At just 19 years old,
while studying a commerce degree at university, she
started working in a frail care facility. At the facility,
she trained to be a care giver, and decided then that
she wanted to be a nurse. She began specialising in
oncology and loved the relationships she formed with
her patients. “You really get to know people when
they’re going through treatment” she says.
After completing her oncology training, she moved
to Australia where she worked in oncology and bone
marrow transplant for two years. She then relocated to
London and gained more experience at chemotherapy
and haematology day care centres, as well as an HIV clinic.
After meeting her South African husband and starting
a family, she moved to Salt Rock. “When I moved here,
it was in my heart to work in home-based care, not
focusing so much on cancer treatment” she says. “I’ve
always been drawn to this kind of work. When people
are unwell, they are most comfortable in their home
environment. You become an important part of the
family’s journey. It’s a privilege being with people at such
a significant time in their lives.”
Now, Rebecca works with Beacon of Care, an
organisation that provides home-based palliative care
to people with life-threatening illnesses on the North
Coast. She completed a Certificate in Palliative Nursing
in 2020 and last year completed her Diploma in Palliative
Medicine through UCT. She says that these courses have
helped her immensely in her approach to patient care.
“Even though I had nursed for years, I not only needed
the knowledge in managing pain and other distressing
symptoms, but in these courses, communication is
We care for patients not only
physically but spiritually
and psychosocially to
improve their quality of life.
a large component, which has helped me grow in
confidence in having conversations with patients and
families that are often hard” she says.
Rebecca works as part of a multi-disciplinary team
and helps to plan individualised care for patients and
their families. “Each person is unique,” she explains.
“We care for patients not only physically but spiritually
and psychosocially to improve their quality of life. We
have doctors, nurses, a physiotherapist, dietician and
occupational therapist and a psychologist. It’s very
rewarding to work as part of a supportive team and we
are always learning so much from each other.”
Self-care is key for Rebecca and her team. “The kind of
work we do needs to be done out of a place of rest which
means putting routines into place that fill our cup,” she
says. To make sure that she can do her best every day,
she walks a lot, spends time in her garden and attends
Pilates. She also prioritises her own relationships with her
husband, children, and friends and attends Linc church.
She meets with her team every two weeks to discuss
patients’ needs and to plan care, but also to share, debrief
and to check in on each other.
Dealing with end-of-life is incredibly difficult for patients
and their families, and even though there is so much
uncertainty, Rebecca believes that being well-prepared
can help considerably in their bereavement. When she
meets with families, she talks a lot about what matters to
people and what their wishes are for their remaining time.
These conversations help patients and their families to
process their experiences.
“We want people to understand that we are an extra layer
of support,” explains Rebecca. “We don’t take the place
of the treating doctor. We see the patient as the head of
the team, along with their family, and as a team, we put
together a plan of care based on the patient’s and family
needs and what kind of support they need.”
A mom of three, Rebecca says that she loves life in South
Africa. “It suits my personality,” she laughs. Her and her
family love the laid-back, outdoor lifestyle and spend their
free time on the beach and in the bush. “There’s so much
life here, so much potential” she says. “I’ve found my home.”
Moms
on a mission
Most moms will agree that motherhood
is the most rewarding job they’ll ever do.
But, that’s not to say they don’t hustle hard
at other ventures too! From artists and
designers, to businesswomen and health
practitioners, we meet some of the North
Coast’s most inspiring mamas…
KITA VEALE, Homestead Décor
Q: How do you balance life as a mom with your work?
A: I go with the flow and I feel that it works for our family and my business.
Each day is completely different for me. I focus my energy on what needs me more that
day. Thank goodness my team at work are incredible and that my hubby helps me out
when I can’t be the taxi driver for the kids.
Q: What’s your favourite thing to do on the North Coast?
A: Definitely Karibu Padel! We absolutely love spending time there as a family. We all love
playing padel and the boys are in their element fishing.
Q: What’s on your wish list this Mother’s Day?
A: I just want to have fun and create memories with my family.
RENE VAN DEN HEEVER, Kijk Optometrist
Q: How do you balance life as a mom with your work?
A: Be present in the moment. Having a very supportive husband who helps juggle the balls
obviously makes it much easier.
Q: What’s your favourite thing to do on the North Coast?
A: The Salt Rock Hotel is such a hidden gem between the palm trees and beautiful view of the
ocean, but nothing recharges me like a walk on the beach with my family.
Q: How will you be spending Mother’s Day?
A: This year we will be celebrating Mother’s Day weekend together with my daughter Nina’s
birthday. I do, however, expect a handmade card.
Q: How do you balance life as a mom with your work?
A: Balance is achieved through routine and being fully present in situations at home and the
work place; keeping the two separate is very important.
Q: What’s your favourite thing to do on the North Coast?
A: Beach days are my favourite. With a busy work schedule, I’m always searching for anything
to rejuvenate my soul through nature so catching a sunrise or sunset with a delicious coffee
while my family surfs has become something I appreciate.
Q: How will you be spending Mother’s Day?
A: For Mother’s Day all I want is a good old-fashioned breakfast in bed, a home-made card
and a foot massage.
Lesego Mpyana, Social Entrepreneur & CSR Strategist, Move Africa
Q: How do you balance life as a mom with your work?
A: I have two young ones (4 and 5). I try to prioritise them and really build my work life around
their schedules as much as possible. I am also an 'all in' kind of person, so there isn't really
balance. I either throw myself into my work at a given time or spend very intentional time with
my kids.
Q: What’s your favourite thing to do on the North Coast?
A: Okay, priorities! I love to eat. We are weekend regulars at Burnedale. The kids love the
animals and play. I also love taking a nice stroll on the promenade with a good coffee in hand.
Q: What’s on your Mother's Day wish list?
A: Scented candles, chocolates and a good perfume!
Q: How do you balance life as a mom with your work?
A: I am lucky that my job allows for some flexibility. Networking is a critical part of the job, so
supporting school and university events goes hand-in-hand with what I do.
Q: What’s your favourite thing to do on the North Coast?
A: I absolutely love Christmas Bay! Spending time on the beautiful beaches on the North Coast is at the
top of my list.
Q: How will you be spending Mother’s Day?
husband who steps in when I need to work, so it’s definitely a team effort.
Q: What’s your favourite thing to do on the North Coast?
A: We love doing family-oriented things such as going to rugby or grabbing a coffee together
at one of the many amazing coffee spots in town.
Q: How will you be spending Mother’s Day?
A: We start the morning off together with the kids jumping in the bed and then spend
together is the best gift.
Q: What’s your favourite thing to do on the North Coast?
A NEW ERA OF
CANCER CARE
ICON’S RADIOTHERAPY
UNIT IN UMHLANGA GETS
A HIGH-TECH UPGRADE!
Icon Oncology, the leading cancer care provider in
the country, is proud to announce the upgrade of its
radiotherapy unit at Umhlanga Oncology Centre. This
is good news for cancer patients who need life-saving
radiotherapy treatment in Umhlanga and the north of Durban.
In mid-April the centre took delivery
of a brand-new Varian Halcyon® linear
accelerator (linac) which forms part of a
multi-million Rand technology investment
and refurbishment at the well-established
oncology centre.
ESTABLISHED EXCELLENCE
Since its launch in 2012, the Icon
Radiotherapy unit at the Umhlanga
Oncology Centre has delivered over 85,000
individual radiation treatments to 4,500
patients. The recent upgrade means that
oncologists in KZN can treat more patients
using the latest radiotherapy technology to
destroy cancer cells.
LATEST TECHNOLOGY
The Halcyon radiotherapy system is engineered to
deliver treatment harnessing the latest advances in radiation
therapy. It allows the very careful delivery of external beam
radiation therapy.
PRECISION
THE UMHLANGA
ONCOLOGY CENTRE
OFFERS A WARM,
RELAXED AND
COMPASSIONATE
ENVIRONMENT WITH
EXPERT CLINICIANS AND
SUPPORTING SERVICES
WHERE PATIENTS
CAN FOCUS ON THEIR
JOURNEY TOWARDS
BETTER HEALTH.
The biggest benefit of the machine is that it delivers a precise,
tightly controlled, and focused radiation dose to the tumour,
while it reduces the impact on surrounding healthy tissue. The
treatment is fast and the linac is designed to move quietly,
which means a more relaxed experience for our patients.
IMPROVED PATIENT EXPERIENCE
Cancer is a traumatic disease and patient
comfort is key to reduce stress and deliver
better outcomes for them. The Varian
Halcyon linac is designed to make the
experience as comfortable as possible
during treatment sessions. It also allows for
quicker treatment duration, which means
patients can focus on recovery and getting
on with their everyday activities.
THE RIGHT CARE
Icon Oncology’s holistic approach to
providing the right care for our patients
means we concentrate on putting our
patients at the centre of everything we do. Our purpose is
to give cancer patients the best opportunity to live healthier
lives. To deliver on this promise, we combine decades of clinical
expertise, research, cutting-edge technology, big data and
managed healthcare experience to deliver the best possible
care to our patients.
Staying healthy
Text: Jennifer Campbell Photographs: Mbali mpofu, rainmaker marketing
A dedicated family man, former
professional rugby player and
property expert Pat Lambie
absolutely loves the North Coast
lifestyle. We chatted to him about
how he maintains a balance and
keeps wellness a priority.
aily movement is an important part of
Pat’s routine. He fully embraces the
North Coast lifestyle by walking his
springer spaniel Wallace, trail running
and surfing, while also making time
for watt biking and body weight
workouts at home. For Pat, exercise is
about more than fitness – it’s essential for his
mental health too. “I feel like a better person,
I’m more productive at work and a better
husband and father at home when I have had
my exercise fix,” he says. “A little bit of exercise
every day is better than a handful of big, long,
hard sessions each week.”
He admits that for people with busy schedules,
it can be hard to prioritise exercise, but finding
a balance is key. “There is enough time in the
day for everything,” he says. “Setting aside some
time to exercise helps me to be more proactive
about it.”
When it comes to nutrition, Pat admits that
he absolutely loves food. “I’ve always had a big
appetite,” he says. “In order to eat a lot, keeping
a balanced and varied eating plan is always the
aim. No diets, just everything in moderation.”
Some of his favourite meals include eggs and
oats for breakfast; wraps and salads for lunch; and
pastas and chicken and vegetables for supper.
Pat is currently building a home at Seaton
Estate, which he hopes to complete later this
year. He’s looking forward to exploring the
walking trails and beach with his family, and
taking advantage of the lap pool, gym and other
amenities on his doorstep. “We see ourselves
taking full advantage of living at Christmas Bay
Beach,” he says. “With active young boys, I am
sure we will spend endless hours amongst all
the various sports facilities.”
Double the passion
For most people, opening a restaurant is a daunting prospect. Twin brothers Andile and
Ayanda Ngidi have taken ambition to the next level, having recently launched three
brand-new spaces in Salt Rock.
Text: Jennifer Campbell
Many North Coast foodies will remember The Danté
Experience in Umhlanga, a triple-story space that
housed a restaurant, five bars and a rooftop. The venue
was co-founded by Andile and Ayanda Ngidi and
was the first of its kind in KZN. In 2022, the brothers
sold the business and took some time to travel and
recharge. Now, back home and feeling inspired, they
have opened three new spots – Donna Modern Italian,
Butcher & Wine, and St Yves Bar – all of which are
located in Salt Rock.
Born and raised in Durban, the Ngidi brothers
discovered a passion for hospitality soon after school
when they worked as waitrons and bartenders while
they were studying for their business degrees. During
this time, they realised that it was the industry for
them. “We just knew it was the space we wanted
to throw ourselves into,” says Andile. Together
they started an events company in their early 20s,
where they learnt a lot about managing people,
coordination and running a business, and after a
short stint in the corporate world, found themselves
drawn back into hospitality.
Andile and Ayanda are similar in many ways and
have shared many experiences, but they each have
attributes that contribute something different to
the business. Ayanda is all about numbers and
administration, while Andile is the people person in
the duo. “We sometimes pull in different directions,
but we’re on the same page when it comes to what
we want to achieve,” says Andile. “The twin relationship
is very unique. We always say to people that we
are among the closest twins because we’ve done
everything together for so long. It’s been my brother
and me through thick and thin, always. We look out for
each other, we support each other. It’s motivating to
be on the same team.”
During their recent travels in the United States, the
brothers were exposed to a whole new world of
hospitality and they took some inspiration from the
spaces they experienced there. “When we came
home, we had millions of dollars of ideas,” says Andile.
“From there, we tried to mould the perfect model.”
After looking at a few sites in Umhlanga, the brothers
decided to venture further north, eventually finding
a spot in Salt Rock last year. They knew they wanted
to open multiple spaces and decided to launch three
concepts next to each other to create a hub where
26 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga May 2024
there’s something for everyone. “It’s hard work, but we
love people,” says Andile. “It’s so rewarding when people
enjoy a space that we’ve created.”
The brothers have had the concept of Donna Modern
Italian in their minds for a while – a space that’s wellsuited
to families and celebrates a rich culinary heritage
while also incorporating modern techniques and
contemporary design. Right next door, Butcher & Wine
is a classic steak house that also offers seafood and sushi,
while St Yves Bar (pronounced Saint Eves) is a fun spot for
after-work drinks or weekend celebrations with friends.
Each of the interiors has been beautifully done by Kirsten
Margaret Lotze, a designer that Andile and Ayanda
have known for many years. “We wanted the spaces
to include elements that are a bit different,” explains
Andile. Some of the stand-out details include a beautiful
mural of ‘Donna’, as well as custom wall papers and light
installations that really make a statement.
Having recently moved to Ballito, Andile admits they still
have a lot to learn about the area but they’re enjoying
life on the North Coast so far. “We’re excited to really be
part of the growth of the area,” says Andile. “It feels like
the next chapter of our lives is just meant to be here.”
BEST
DAY
EVER
Roxy and Billy Bolt recently tied the
knot in a beautiful ceremony in Cape
Town. We chatted to the couple about
how they brought their vision of a
unique and personal celebration to life.
Text: Jennifer Campbell Photographs: krust photography
Born and raised in Umhlanga, Roxy met Billy, the British
man of her dreams, when he was visiting South Africa.
Billy is a six-time world champion off-road motorbike
rider and youtuber and after a long-distance
relationship, the couple are thrilled to finally be living
together as husband and wife.
When coming up with a wedding theme, Roxy
wanted a Palm Springs aesthetic – funky, bold and
bright. “Both mine and Billy’s favourite colour is pink
so we naturally gravitated towards that,” she explains.
“And then I went with a touch of vintage with big
ballroom chandeliers, traditional silver cutlery, crystal
glassware and a grand piano.” The couple decided
against a traditional wedding cake, choosing instead
to cut a pizza as part of the celebration. “I knew I
wanted my first meal as a married woman to be pizza!”
says Roxy. In a unique twist, mini cakes were used as
the guests’ name tags on the tables.
The wedding included many beautiful details, but
it was Roxy’s dress that took centre stage. Designed
and created by Umhlanga artist Jane Wolff, the dress
included various elements as tributes to Billy, the
couple’s relationship and the things that are special
to them. “Jane came up with the idea to make custom
lace and for this I provided her with things like my first
plane ticket to go visit Billy, a drawing of us from a trip
32 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga May 2024
to Paris, and reference images for my love of hearts
and chandeliers,” says Roxy. The bodice was beaded
with personalised elements like lightning bolts and
57s (Billy’s race number), while silver beads and
diamantes made it really pop. “The end result had me
gobsmacked,” she says. “It was as regal as regal gets. It
was a dream come true.”
Billy kept his outfit a surprise, which Roxy loved.
After Roxy gave him a piece of her dress fabric as
a reference, he had a suit custom-made, which he
paired with Doc Martins. And when it came to the
bridesmaids, Roxy opted for the quiet luxury of
Umhlanga-based design Milliditz. “I always joked
with my girls that I couldn’t wait to dress them like
cupcakes when I got married,” she says. “We mixed
things up with each girl in a different style and in
various shades of pink.”
With loads of personal touches, a fun colour palette
and a stunning setting, the wedding day was nothing
short of perfect. Roxy’s advice to couples planning
their big day is to start the ceremony early. “It really
does go by in a flash! Everyone will tell you about the
sun and the heat and why you need to start later, but
it’s such a special day that you only get to do once
so make it last! I wish I started at 10am with a brunch,”
she laughs.
A lasting memory
For many years, Jane Wolff poured her energy into designing and
creating bridal dresses. Now, she has made a shift, focusing on her
love of art and floral preservation.
Text: Jennifer Campbell Photographs: jane wolff
34 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga May 2024
“I have always been an artist. From the day I could hold
a crayon, it was the most natural thing for me in the
world,” says Jane. “As I got older, I was drawn to florals,
birds and nature. There is a romance to flowers – their
fleeting beauty, and the process of aging in which I
find such deep romance.”
Jane was drawn to bridal design because of the
personalised nature of the industry. “I got into fashion
because it was a practical place to be creative,” she
explains. “For anyone who is artistically minded, the
wedding industry can be a wonderful place to be
because your artwork and unique vision is celebrated.”
Although she loved creating wedding gowns and the
opportunity the work gave her to create something
special and individual, she found herself craving more
ways to express her creativity. She started creating
artworks at home after work. “I love texture, floral
abstracts, dried and pressed flowers – the creative mess
that slowly transforms, like a puzzle and into something
beautiful,” she says. After becoming a mom six years
ago, she found herself leaning more into art as a
healing space and found deep satisfaction in exploring
and playing. The pressure and intensity of the wedding
industry caused her considerable stress, and she
eventually made the decision to change her path.
Although she has left the world of wedding gowns
behind, she hasn’t said goodbye to weddings
altogether. Among her offerings as an artist are
preserved bridal bouquets. “There is a significance to
the bouquet,” she says. “It represents the merging of
worlds before the marriage and after the wedding; the
blooming beauty of the bride in that exact moment
in time; and of course, it is also incredibly pretty.
Heirloom pieces are such a big part of the wedding
day and to be able to look back and remember the
moment you really began your journey in front of all
of your friends and family is very special.”
Although there are a number of ways to preserve
a bouquet, Jane prefers the natural process of
allowing flowers to age gracefully. Once she receives
a bouquet, there is a short window in which she can
prepare the flowers by removing any excess petals,
stems or leaves. She uses a silica gel to dry the flowers
out, sometimes using a press to flatten them. Once
the flowers come out of the gel (some weeks later),
she figures out how to arrange them. “At this point, the
bouquet will take its own journey and I put the pieces
back together in a way that works for the new look of
the flowers,” she explains.
It's important to understand that, over time, all flowers
will age and change, but for Jane this is part of the magic
of the process. “I love that the preserved flowers are
different from what they looked like on the wedding day,”
she says. “To me it adds a romance, having been carried
down an aisle, and loved by the bride.”
floral arch serves as a
beautiful focal point
for the wedding
ceremony, drawing
attention to the area
where the happy
couple exchanges
vows. “The arch sets the tone for the
rest of the wedding – be it romantic,
rustic or modern,” explains Cindy.
“Most arches can be moved after the
ceremony, and double as a backdrop
for a photo booth or to frame the
bridal couple. They’re great for adding
a touch of elegance, romance and
bloom
In full
Floral arches have become increasingly popular and make a striking feature at a
wedding ceremony. We chatted to Cindy Rynhoud, florist and owner of Love Laugh in
Ballito, about the trend and what it takes to create an impactful piece.
natural beauty to a wedding venue
and create a memorable backdrop.”
When it comes to designing a floral
arch for a wedding ceremony, there
are a few key elements to consider.
“It’s important to understand the
couple’s vision, wedding theme,
colour palette and any specific flowers
or styles they would like to include,”
explains Cindy. After visiting the
venue, she develops a design concept
that aligns with the couple’s vision
and the look and feel of the space.
She always chooses high-quality,
seasonal flowers and greenery, as
well as a sturdy arch framework that
can support the weight of the plants.
Cindy urges couples to understand
that proper preparation is key as a lot
of time and effort goes into preparing
the flowers even before the assembly
stage can begin. Ideally, the arch
should be assembled on site on the
day of the wedding. Because the
flowers are attached to the arch with
cable ties or floral wire and secured
with reusable floral mesh, there’s no
need to use floral foam. “It’s very ecofriendly
and sustainable,” says Cindy.
For the best possible effect, Cindy
38 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga May 2024
suggests ensuring that the arch is
balanced and symmetrical. “It will
appear in some of the most important
photos of your special day,” she says.
“Adding finishing touches with fillers
and flowers creates depth and texture.
This is when chandeliers or lighting
can be added.”
There are a few flowers that are
proving particularly popular at
the moment. Roses are classic and
romantic, are available in many
colours and last well in arches, while
peonies work well because of their
size. Cindy says that hydrangeas are
wonderful to bulk up an arch and
create a striking visual impact, but
it’s important to note that they don’t
enjoy heat. Lillies come in various
types and shades and offer a unique
look; dahlias boast vibrant colours and
add drama and personality to an arch;
succulents and aloes add a trendy
element to your design; Phalaenopsis
orchids, which include exposed roots
can be reused and enjoyed after the
wedding; and gypsophila can be used
on its own for a stunning effect, or
mixed with other florals.
“There are currently a number of
innovative twists and variations for
couples to consider when selecting
a wedding arch,” explains Cindy.
Hanging installations can be made to
look like floating clouds of florals or
greenery, while living walls or vertical
gardens made of flowers or foliage are
eco-friendly options that add texture
and depth to a space. Geometric
shapes are on trend. “We often use
triangles, hexagons and squares in
arch designs,” says Cindy. “The oval
arch is no longer the norm.”
Dried flowers and grasses are still
very popular, and can be kept as
memorabilia for the bridal couple.
More and more couples are also
looking at ways to make their
wedding décor more sustainable.
Some good eco-friendly options
include wild flowers and grasses;
local and seasonal florals; reusable
materials; and natural elements such
as branches, vines and foraged foliage.
Tash and Rich Lange
love capturing special
moments through
photography and film.
Romantic, warm and dreamy…
Tash and Rich are passionate about
creating images and videos that
evoke a sweet sense of nostalgia.
While Tash focuses on photography,
Rich captures the real, raw moments
in between with videography.
Based in Ballito, they have worked
together for a number of years
offering brand development and
photography for local businesses,
but it is family and wedding shoots
that remain at the heart of their
business, Stories by Goya. Working
together has its challenges. “There
was a lot of butting heads in the
beginning,” laughs Rich, but the
couple has found a way to make it
work, and each of them brings their
own style and strengths to a shoot.
Tash is a people-person with an
eye for detail, and Rich is a creative
spirit who likes to be behind the
scenes where he can capture special,
fleeting moments. “Storytelling is at
the heart of all our work,” explains
Tash. “To be able to preserve the art
of storytelling in some way is why we
love what we do.”
When Tash and Rich shoot a wedding,
they encourage the couple to keep
it real. “We’re there the whole day.
Let’s not fabricate it,” says Tash. “It’s
not about the photography and the
video, it’s about your wedding and
we’re there to capture what’s actually
happening. You’re marrying the
person you love most in the world,
that you love most in the world.
What’s not going to be beautiful
about that?”
When it comes to their visual style,
Tash and Rich have remained
traditional in an effort to create
work that won’t date over time.
“In 20 or 40 years’ time, you’re not
going to remember a trend that was
happening on Instagram,” says Rich.
That said, their particular aesthetic has
a desaturated, film-like quality with a
soft, dreamy feel.
Through their work, Tash and Rich
have connected with some wonderful
people, and there’s often a natural
progression where they do maternity
and family shoots for their wedding
couples. “We just love being able to
tell a real story about people, and to
capture moments, because it all goes
so fast,” says Tash.
A taste for adventure
Laura Lander spent 15 years travelling the world while
working on superyachts. Now, she’s settled back in Umhlanga
and shares her skills and experiences with others who have
the urge to explore.
Although Laura has been around the world, she is pleased
to be back on South African shores. Originally from Westville
and now based in Umhlanga with her Australian husband,
she enjoys the lifestyle that the area offers. The couple
met while working on a superyacht, and are happy to
have settled on the North Coast. “Even though there are
problems here, we love it! When you travel a lot, you realise
that there are problems everywhere,” she says. “You can
make a choice to stay and be part of the solution. South
Africa is where my heart is; it’s home.”
After school, Laura wasn’t sure what she wanted to do but
when she was offered the opportunity to work on a fivestar
private game reserve after university, her eyes were
opened to the world of hospitality. “I just love doing a job
that makes people happy,” she says. After some years at
luxury game lodges, Laura took a job as a junior stewardess
on a superyacht. Her work took her all over the world – off
the beaten track in Papua New Guinea, to the sparkling
archipelago of Vanuatu and some beautiful areas of India.
Some of her personal highlights include swimming with
bioluminescence in Palau, and discovering the tropical
islands of Seychelles. Although she saw some amazing
places over the course of 15 years, it was the people
she met that really impacted her. “It was an incredible
experience. The best thing for me was the opportunity to
live and work with people from different cultures,” she says.
Between the travels and the rewarding moments, however,
life at sea wasn’t always easy. “In this industry, you have to
be service-minded and comfortable following a lot of rules,”
says Laura. “It’s really hard work and the hours are long.”
Laura is now the director of Trilogy Luxury Training in
Umhlanga, which offers courses to people looking to enter
the superyacht industry, as well as seasoned professionals
looking to upskill. Although she has traded work on
superyachts for solid ground, she loves still being part of the
industry and being able to share her knowledge.
“I love being able to help the next generation of professional
superyacht crew members navigate their maritime career
path,” she says.
The romance of rail
Seven reasons why a stay on the Kruger Shalati should be on your romantic bucket list!
The truly spectacular views from your
bedroom ... be it one of the two dozen
Carriage Suites on the Train on the Bridge
or the seven Bridge House Suites, sitting
adjacent to the bridge in a picturesque
garden setting with the train’s gentle glow as
your backdrop. All are opulent, with a hint of
the 1920s rail safari. The views are equally
marvelous from the lounge and dining
areas and the swimming pools, which overlook the
Sabie River... the river flows all year-round, drawing
animals and birds that come to quench their thirst.
The fact that you’ll be recreating
history. The Kruger Shalati - The Train on
the Bridge, sits on the exact spot where the
train would park overnight close to 100 years
ago, when visits to the Kruger National Park were
first allowed. The refurbished train is permanently
stationed on the historically rich Selati Bridge
above the Sabie River ... a unique experience
with luxury accommodation and activities
reminiscent of days gone by.
The option of a romantic turndown
... with rose petals scattered around
the room, a scented bubble bath
and a bottle of Moët champagne or
Steenburg Brut sparkling wine on ice.
