new. This was not the case when Einstein brought forward his theory<br />

nonetheless, Einstein proceeded to completely restructure our understanding<br />

<strong>of</strong> such basic notions as space, time, mass, and energy, turning them from<br />

absolute facts <strong>of</strong> the world into more restricted truths about how we see the<br />

universe from a particular frame <strong>of</strong> reference.<br />

For Isaac Newton, space and time are absolute and independent<br />

<br />

If you had a God’s-eye perspective on the universe, you could give<br />

every point and object a unique address, locating it in this absolute<br />

space. Space is where things are, and all things are located at a<br />

<br />

<strong>of</strong>f, moment after regular moment, and we can talk about what<br />

is happening at every point in space at any one moment. What<br />

happens at those points is governed by the three laws <strong>of</strong> motion and<br />

the law <strong>of</strong> universal gravitation.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se rules give the same results for all observers moving relative<br />

to each other in a straight line at a constant speed, but this presents<br />

<br />

space. If absolute space is real, then our science should be able to<br />

determine its properties. But Newton’s theory—because it holds<br />

equally well for everyone moving at the same speed—cannot<br />

do this.<br />
