consciousness,” which referred not only to being more openminded<br />

about violating longstanding social mores but also to<br />

affecting one’s psychology through meditation or drug use.<br />

<strong>The</strong> popularization <strong>of</strong> unobservable elements <strong>of</strong> Freudian and post-<br />

Freudian psychology concerned mainstream psychologists, who<br />

direction it was taking. A new approach was sought, the result <strong>of</strong><br />

which was behaviorism.<br />
