Starting School
September 2024
Welcome to Brereton CE Primary School
Thank you for choosing Brereton CE Primary School to care for your child.
We are really looking forward to welcoming you all into our school community.
Starting school is a big step in your child's life. It is a time of excitement and
sometimes anxiety. At Brereton C of E Primary School, we want the
transition from Pre-school into Reception to be as smooth and as happy as
possible. We aim to achieve that by providing you with a wealth of information
and answering any questions you may have, so that you can help and support
your child in this transition.
If you have queries or questions, please do not P hhesitate o o Hto eget a din i ntouch; g no
question is a silly one! We want to do everything we can to support and
reassure you.
‘There is wonderful joy ahead’
Getting Ready for School
You have probably already started talking to your child about school. You can help
your child feel comfortable and positive about school by emphasising how enjoyable
it is. You can tell them that they will make many new friends, and enjoy playing
with lots of new things.
Make a point of talking about school and how children go to school to have fun
and learn. Tell them that all the teachers will care for them and that they will
have special teachers who will be in their classroom every day. You could visit our
website or Facebook page and share some of the photos and videos with them.
We have also created videos introducing members of staff which you may choose
to share with your children before arriving in September.
Supporting Learning at Home
You may have spent time enjoying nursery rhymes, counting rhymes and
bedtime stories with your child. These are vital in helping your child to develop
Literacy and Numeracy skills.
You can also help your child's reading development by sharing books together
and talking about the story and pictures. Pointing out every day print e.g.
signs and notices will also be helpful. Let your child see you reading too.
Give your child lots of materials and opportunities to write, mark make and
draw and encourage their efforts with lots of praise. If you want to help
your child to write their name, please begin with a capital letter and use lower
case letters for the rest of the name. Please support correct letter formation.
We currently use a commercial phonics scheme called Read Write Inc to
compliment our teaching and you can support this by purchasing the Set 1 Flash
Cards to assist your child at home.
When cooking, you can show your child how to use scales and how much things
weigh. Cooking together is a great way to learn! Look out at the different
shapes of packets and tins. You can help counting skills by counting buttons,
stairs, sounds etc. Look out for numbers in the signs and notices when out and
about.
A Quality Start to School Life
School can be a very different context to preschool settings and research has
shown that part-time attendance in the first instance helps to make a smooth
transition. Even though your child may have been happy and settled in their
preschool setting, the change to a school setting places different demands on
them. Therefore, in order to give your child the best possible start, they will
be attending school part-time for the first week.
Open Door Policy
Your child’s well-being is our primary concern. Should you ever have any worries
or concerns we would want parents to speak to us as soon as possible. A problem
can often be quickly resolved!
New Starter Meeting
We are looking forward to welcoming parents and carers into school to
discover more about life at Brereton. EYFS staff will deliver a
presentation within which they will explain daily routines and how learning will
be supported. Office staff will also be available to support with data
collection and to share how medications will be administered within school.
Members of the Governing Body and PTA will also be there to welcome
you to the school community and to answer any questions you may have.
Representatives from Badged and Sam Dales will also be present with
uniform samples.
Visits
We are keen for the children to come into school during the summer
term and see their classroom and meet the staff.
therefore arranged three dates for visits:
Tuesday 18th June 9:30-11am
Monday 1st July 1:15-2:45pm
We have
Please come in via the visitors entrance (School Lane) and drop-off
and collect from the school’s main entrance.
Tuesday 3rd September 8:20-8:45am
You and your child are invited to come into school, prior to the other pupils returning.
This session will be informal and is designed to help the children become accustomed to
the start of school. Please enter school via Newcastle Road South, go to the blue
gate by the hall and walk up the Reception outdoor area. There a member of the
team will greet your child and show them into the classroom. We will ask you to
wait on the playground and we will then bring the children out to meet you. This will
replicate the end of each school day. Our Reception children are always dismissed
through their external classroom door once we can see their parent or named carer.
Whilst in the classroom, staff will take the children in to find their own labelled pegs
and explore the new layout of the classroom before enjoying a short story.
To Order Call:
First Week - Wednesday 4th-Friday 6th September
Children will attend part time for these first three days.
Our gates open at 8:35am and children can come straight into the
classroom. Please say goodbye to your child at the gate to the EYFS
outdoor area, as coming into the school building can make leaving harder.
Children are generally happy to say goodbye and carry on into school but if
your child does become upset a member of staff will comfort and care
for them. Please feel free to ring the school for reassurance if you are
worried. School begins at 8:50am and the blue gates are then closed. If
you arrive after this, please come in through the main entrance.
The children will have lunch at school before being collected at 1pm. Please
collect from the main entrance.
Full Time Attendance
All Reception children are asked to attend full time from Monday 9th
September. Pick up is from 3pm.
If parents feel anxious about this then we can discuss an increased transition,
please just let us know.
School To Order Uniform Call:
We believe that children should take pride in both themselves and their
school. A smart school uniform gives children self-confidence, selfdiscipline
and a sense of belonging to something special, as well as
helping to develop high standards in other aspects of school life. The
uniform consists of:
Grey trousers/ skirts/ tunics
White shirts
School tie
Navy blue cardigan/ jumper with school logo
Sensible school shoes (no trainers)
Grey or white socks only please
PE uniform - navy shorts, navy shirt with school logo and black
slip on plimsolls.
All school uniform is available from Sam Dale Limited Holmes Chapel
and at Badged Sandbach.
Please can you make sure that all items are clearly labelled with your
child’s name.
School Meals and Packed Lunches
Reception will eat in their classroom and the staff will support them with
cutting up their food etc.
Currently, all pupils in Reception Class, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to
Free School Meals. All food is prepared on the premises and we offer
a multi choice menu of freshly cooked main meals (which includes a
vegetarian option) and a choice of pudding, fresh fruit or yoghurt. The
daily salad bar offers a variety of choice from pasta, tomato, apple,
sweetcorn, lettuce, couscous and grapes.
A detailed menu of all the school meals is available on the school website.
If your child has a packed lunch please ensure that it is sent in a suitable
container clearly labelled with his or her name. If a drink is included it
should be a carton of juice rather than a fizzy drink or a can.
Morning Break
As part of the government fruit scheme all children under the age of 7 are
entitled to a free piece of fruit and until the age of 5 your child is entitled to
free milk. This is prepared daily by the school cook and all children are
encouraged to select a piece of fruit during morning break. You can also send
your child to school with a healthy snack, but please do not send chocolate,
biscuits, sweets or crisps.
As an alternative, the school cook sells toast from the canteen at morning
break time. This is ordered in class each morning and paid via ParentPay.
Toast is priced at 25p.
Illness
If your child is unwell and unable to come to school please ring
and let us know on the first day of absence before 9.30am.
If your child falls ill during the school time we will contact you
immediately. Please ensure that we have a number where you can
be reached.
Water
We encourage children to drink water throughout the school day by
providing each child with a named clear bottle which can be filled with
water. Research has shown that it is beneficial to children’s health
and ability to learn if they drink water frequently throughout the
day. Water coolers are sited in the corridors to provide filtered water
for replenishing bottles. Bottles are clearly labelled with your child’s
name, these are regularly washed and kept in school.
Security
Your child’s safety is of paramount importance to us. Therefore, we
request that should it be necessary for anyone other than a child’s
parents or those with parental responsibility to collect your son or
daughter, staff are advised in advance. In the case of someone
arriving to collect your children where staff have not been informed
of a change of plan either verbally or by letter, a member of staff
will telephone the parents to verify these arrangements. Whilst we
understand this may cause some inconvenience, we are confident that
you will endorse this procedure to ensure your child’s safety.
Communication
School Spider
School Spider is the host of our website and is our main communication
tool. Any information you need to know about, trips, special events etc will
be sent by e-mail through School Spider. You will also have a parent log in
which will enable you to book parents evening slots and reply to surveys and
forms. A new starter pack, containing registration forms, will be handed
out at the New Starter’s meeting and these can be completed on the night
or returned to the school office by post or e-mail.
ParentPay
We are a cashless school. You will receive a ParentPay activation letter
which you will use to create your ParentPay account. All trips etc will be
paid via ParentPay.
Class Dojo
Class Dojo is a system we use in school to reward all children. This is
something that all parents can access once the children have started in
school. A letter will be sent home during the first few weeks to explain
how to access and use the software.
Website Weekly Blog & Newsletter
As a school we endeavour to update parents as often as possible on what is
happening within school. Each Friday we will add a new blog along with pictures and
reminders. Our aim is to ensure parents know as much as possible about the learning
in school and are prepared for the upcoming week. A school newsletter is also
e-mailed to all parents every Friday.
We hope that your child will be very happy with us here at Brereton. We look
forward to working in partnership with you to provide the best possible education.
We are committed to creating an open and supportive relationship with you. If you
have any queries or questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
