Every week, the Exit Zero crew goes for lunch (or dinner or, 

maybe even on occasion, breakfast) at one of Cape May’s excellent 

dining establishments. Then we give you the skinny on 

what we ate, what we talked about (or some of what we talked 

about), who spat their drink from laughing too hard, who served 

us, who we bumped into and, you know, the general lay of the land. 

The place: Behr Brewing on Seashore Road in Cape May. Owners 

Steve and Cat Wilson have been pumping out new brews since opening 

their doors in February 2022 and it’s become a favorite spot of ours. So 

much so, we partnered with Behr to create EZ Livin’ — a mango wheat 

ale available on tap at Exit Zero Filling Station. 

The vibe: We were there to celebrate a birthday and our group was 

able to hangout comfortably in their lounge area complete with cozy 

couches and chairs, a fireplace and TV. Beertender Jenn pours a mean 

beer and was just wonderful — when it came time to sing “happy birthday,” 

she grabbed the attention of the whole bar to join in — how sweet! 

The bar area was pretty full and some guests were outside enjoying the 

beautiful weather at a picnic table, dog-friendly by the way! Behr offers 

a great space to grab a few drinks, plus they frequently have food trucks 

on property, too. Mac’s Cafe was there that day and we grabbed some 

hot dogs and cheese fries to munch on which were delicious. Check out 

their food truck schedule on their Facebook page before your next visit. 

The brews: We were hanging out for a bit and tried our fair share of 

beers. Favorites included the Hawaiian Eyes tropical sour, Bluebehry 

wheat beer, Pale Behr pale ale and Behr Pong American light lager. Behr 

offers flights to try a bunch before selecting your favorite. You can also 

enjoy them in a 4-ounce, 8-ounce or 16-ounce pour at the bar or grab a 

32-ounce or 64-ounce growler to take home. Their tap list does change 

so keep an eye on their website and social media for updates. 

The takeaway: Behr Brewing is open seven days a week and a 

great spot to spend any day, but they’ve got some great stuff scheduled 

throughout the week. Head over for Mario Mondays, Vinyl Night Tuesdays, 

Movie Marathon Wednesdays, Feel Good Yoga Thursdays and 

Game Day Sunday. Plus, you’ll also be able to catch the Phillies on the 

screen when they play all season long.

We who live in this age are fishand-bird 

fortunate. In one sense 

it has always been this way. 

When Christopher Columbus 

first touched down upon these 

shores, he cast eyes upon the greatest natural 

aviary the earth has ever known, one that 

hosted a forest pigeon estimated to be the 

most abundant bird species on the planet. 

Just off San Salvador, Columbus and his ship 

were overflown by flocks of tiny curlews 

migrating from Arctic breeding areas and 

wintering grounds in South America. The 

curlew’s numbers were estimated to equal 

those of the forest pigeon. In addition to the 

pigeon and the curlew, the continent hosted 

approximately 700 other bird species. Tens 

of millions of songbirds, clouds of ducks and 

geese, a prairie ecosystem flocks of prairie 

chickens so abundant that pioneers were said 

to have been driven close to madness by 

the conjoined sound of breeding males. One 

species of Prairie Chicken, the Heath Hen, 

even flourished in Pine Barrens Heath from 

Virginia to New Hampshire — it is believed 

the bird served up by the Pilgrims at that first 

Thanksgiving day repast. 

The Heath Hen, the Passenger Pigeon, 

and the Eskimo Curlew are now gone, killed 

off by wanton slaughter and habitat destruction. 

Tragic? Yes. But the good news is that 

most of those 700 species housed on our continent 

still remain. From tiny hummingbirds 

to stately herons and egrets, North America’s 

natural dowery remains mostly intact. Luck 

played a role but determined resolve and conservation-minded 

decisions figured in our 

good fortune, too. 

Today, Cape May hosts the largest 

Laughing Gull colony on earth, yet a century 

ago, the population was a fraction of its 

current abundance. The splendid hosts of 

breeding herons and egrets that breed in our 

coastal rookeries, too, were close to being 

wiped out in the dark days of the late 1800s. 

Indeed, it was the specter of beaches bereft of 

gulls and marshes devoid of egrets that gave 

rise to the Conservation Movement — the 

great public outcry against the slaughter of 

birds and the avocation of protecting our natural 

dowery. The last great alliance between 

sportsmen, ornithologists, and average citizens 

and it spawned such conservation giants 

as Teddy Roosevelt, Gifford Pinchot, and 

John Burrows and it gave rise to institutions 

like the Audubon Society, and the Fish and 

Wildlife Service who continue to safeguard 

our birds and other wildlife.

East Lynne Theater sure knows how 

to start the season with a bang! 

On Saturday April 20 at 8pm, they 

launch their 44th season with 

“Jersey Lawman,” a one-night-only 

staged reading based on the memoir, “Jersey 

Lawman: A Life on the Right Side of Crime” 

by Jim Plousis and George Ingram. 

“Jersey Lawman” is presented by six actors 

who portray 42 characters in chronicling the 

nearly 50-year law enforcement career of former 

Cape May County Sheriff, Jim Plousis. 

The staged reading is adapted and directed by 

Thomas Raniszewski who also joins the other 

five actors in the production. East Lynne’s 

very own Mat Lobatka, who starred in their 

2022 production of “Who am I This Time?” 

portrays Plousis. Making his stage debut in 

“Jersey Lawman” will be Michael Sharp who 

currently works as a Corrections Officer at the 

Cape May County jail. 

Exit Zero has had a peek at the script 

which includes some of Jim’s astounding tales 

of true crime and strange encounters — reallife 

accounts of murder scene investigations, 

stealthy prison breaks and scheming mobsters. 

Among a cavalcade of colorful characters 

are notable criminals such as convicted 

mob boss, Nicky Scarfo and Ponzi scheme 

mastermind, Bernie Madoff. Presidential paramour, 

Monica Lewinsky makes an appearance 

as well as Obie Hayes, a Cape May 

County pine barrens hermit whose hankering 

for roadkill cuisine is stomach-turning. 

Jim Plousis was the youngest elected 

Sheriff of Cape May County’s Sheriff’s Office 

since its establishment in 1692. Taking office 

in 1985, Jim served six consecutive terms 

as sheriff and set standards in law enforcement 

which became a model for other agencies 

in the state. The script takes us from 

Jim’s presidential appointment as a United 

States Marshal to becoming the chair of the 

NJ Parole Board. 

“Jersey Lawman” is pay-what-you-will at 

the door. Proceeds will be split between U.S. 

Marshals Survivors Benefit Fund and East 

Lynne’s Capital Campaign. Jim Plousis will be 

present at the reading and join the cast for a 

post-show Q&A. Plousis’ memoir will be on 

sale, proceeds of which are donated to U.S. 

Marshals Survivors Benefit Fund.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, celebrate Earth Day! 

We’re fresh from the wonder of a 

solar eclipse, and we’ve had an 

earthquake, so this Earth Day is a 

good time to consider being kind 

to Mother Nature. 

The first Earth Day celebration was in 

1970. It was organized to call attention to the 

damage humans can do to the planet in the 

absence of regulations. It’s easy to forget that 

there once was no law barring the dumping 

of toxic waste, and no government agency 

tasked with monitoring our air, soil and water. 

There’s a long way to go, but we’ve made progress. 

Some of you are out there doing big ecofriendly 

things, like installing solar panels or 

eschewing cars. Others are giving up meat, or 

learning to sew, to alter clothing rather than 

replacing it. But the little things help, too. In 

the grocery store, choose less toxic cleaning 

products like vinegar, borax and castile soap. 

In the health and beauty aisle, opt for bar soap 

and shampoos, and get your hair spray and 

dry shampoo without propane and butane. 

Add native plants to your garden to feed the 

local bugs and birds and learn to tolerate 

dandelions and clover in your lawn, and on 

the golf course. Conserve water. Reuse wrapping 

paper. Borrow or fix things rather than 

buying. Plant a tree. Some “save the earth” 

tips are suited to Cape May. It’s a great town 

for walking and biking — drive less. Consider 

bamboo utensils over plastic for your summer 

parties. Get a clothesline for those bathing 

suits and beach towels. Buy produce from 

farm stands. When you need new light bulbs, 

Swain’s has LED products. Surround your 

home with plants like eucalyptus, lavender 

and catmint to repel mosquitos, or use old 

fashioned repellents like cloves stuck into 

oranges, or outdoor “candles” made of burning 

coffee grounds.

Park on Saturday, April 20 from 10am to 3pm. 

Expect educational exhibits, live music, a 

scavenger hunt and earth-friendly craft exhibits, 

along with a pop-up food court. 

On Earth Day, Monday, April 22, join a 

beach clean-up. Meet outside of Convention 

Hall at 10am to help your Cape May neighbors. 

The City of Cape May will provide garbage 

bags, gloves and water. Or, help out 

at the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge. 

Their beach has been closed to protect nesting 

shorebirds, and now they are cleaning up

My niece invited us over to their new 

home for dinner last month. I have to say, I was 

shocked when, after dinner, they lit up a marijuana 

pipe and passed it around. I declined 

and hid my annoyance. My wife and I are in 

our 40s and were not, in our younger days, 

above experimentation, but I just found this so 

blatant and tone deaf to the rest of us. Do you 

think we are acting like fuddy duddies? And, 

again, we both simply declined and took our 

leave as soon as we thought it appropriate. But 

I don’t see myself going back there anytime 

soon. Further, what happens when they visit 

us? — Feeling Out of Place

The answer is, yes, you are acting like

Wise answers to perplexing questions 

fuddy duddies, but you can’t change how you 

feel, but the laws have changed. On the other 

hand, it would have been nice for your niece to 

have given you a heads up. No one wants to feel 

like an odd man out at any social occasion. As 

to dinner at your place, that is a simple solution 

— announce ahead of time — no smoking. The 

Answer Lady suggests dinner at Beach Plum 

Farm. Mingle with the chickens and enjoy a 

lovely farm-to-table dinner. 

Dear Answer Lady 

My BFF since childhood has a tendency 

to interrupt me whenever I have something 

serious going on and I start to tell her about it. 

She always interjects with her own anecdote 

of something similar that happened to her. 

She never just listens — I want to know what 

she thinks about MY problem or to at least 

empathize with me. Or not say anything but 

just listen. I don’t want to lose her friendship, 

but, what are friends for? — A Friend in Need 

Dear In Need 

You might have to be direct with her. She 

may not realize what she’s doing and IS trying 

to empathize. Try saying at the beginning 

of your concern, “I have something to tell you 

and please don’t say anything until I get it all 

out.” At the end of your issue, finish with, “I 

want to know what you think?” She might still 

egocentricize, but you might be able to direct 

her comments more toward solutions and less 

toward the self. Consider taking her to Oyster 

Bay for dinner to test the waters. Come up with 

a less-heavy concern and see how she reacts.

• STOP idling your car 

• Turn off lights when not in use/needed 

• Use LED light bulbs and unplug electronics when not in use 

• Grow your flower or vegetable garden with plants that attract bees 

and butterflies, and require less water 

• Tread lightly – explore local nature centers and trails 

• Build responsibly – Support Green Energy!

to the shelter with he brother Scout. He is 

learning basic manners and is treat-motivated, 

helping his training progress. Bear is 

dog social and would need a slow introduction 

to cats just like his brother. He would make a 

great family companion for one who would 

keep him active. 

SCOUT is a young boy who arrived at the shelter 

with his brother Bear when their owner 

could no longer keep them. They are hoping 

to get a second chance at a happy life with a 

new family. Scout is a friendly pup who is a bit 

sensitive — loud noises scare him, but he loves 

people and learning new things. A family that 

could keep him active would be best. 

TAZ is a six-year-old feisty guy who arrived 

at the shelter when his family could no longer 

care for him. He takes a while to warm up, but 

once he does, he’s a happy and energetic dog. 

Taz loves running around the yard to explore, 

and would rather not go on car rides. It would 

be best if he was the only dog in the house, 

though he loves cats.
