MID-APRIL 2024 • Spring has arrived!
Markfield, Field Head, Stanton-under-Bardon, Thornton & Bagworth
John and Nita Smith of Thornton
Nurseries celebrate their Platinum
Wedding Anniversary
ON MONDAY 20th March 1954 a young man born
and raised in Thornton married his childhood
sweetheart, originally from Derby, at Cross Hills
Chapel.
John and Nita Smith have two children David and Debbie,
who were also born in the village, five grandchildren and nine
great grandchildren, three of whom are the fourth generation to
attend Thornton Primary School.
In 1962 John gave up his day job and, between them, Nita
and John worked hard to found Hilltop Nurseries, later known
as Thornton Nurseries. The nursery is now in the expert hands
of David and his son Ben.
John
still holds
a season
ticket to
watch his
beloved
team, the
Foxes,
but
daytime
matches
only now
though!
John also
worked
for the
BBC for
50 years as a Radio Leicester Down to Earth presenter.
Meanwhile Nita was very involved in helping to
raise funds to build and, latterly, maintain Thornton’s
Community Centre. Nita was president of Thornton
WI for many years and so, although never a true
‘Thorntonian’, believes she has now been accepted into
the village!
Together they have travelled far and wide in this
country, and beyond – North to Iceland, South to
South Africa and many countries East and West including cruising 1,000 miles down the Amazon followed by
Orinoco and the Mississippi.
To celebrate their milestone of 70 years of marriage, John and Nita are cruising once more, this time in
search of the Northern Lights.
Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council
Community Equipment
Grant Fund launched
A
COMMUNITY EQUIPMENT GRANT fund opened for
Parish and Town councils and constituted community
groups on 1st April 2024. The grant fund will help
fund items of equipment for use by the community.
The total grant fund of £25,000 will be distributed on a first come first serve
basis, with a maximum of £3,000 available for any one group or organisation
and there is also a limit of £3,000 of grant funding for each parish area.
Items that could be purchased through this grant could be a bench/seat, sign/
noticeboard, defibrillator, tables and chairs as an example. The grant will be for
50% of the item cost or a maximum figure.
Paul Scragg, Senior Green Spaces Officer said: “This grant gives councils
and small groups the opportunity to purchase items which may help complete a
project, be an item wanted and benefit many, but budgets would not simply allow
for. The fund is on a first-come basis so I would urge anyone interested to apply
as soon as possible.”
WHAT IF calling
someone stupid was
illegal?
In a reality not too distant from
our own, where the so-called
Mental Parity Movement has taken
hold, the worst thing you can call
someone is ‘stupid’.
Everyone is equally clever, and
discrimination based on intelligence
is ‘the last great civil rights fight’.
Exams and grades are all
discarded, and smart phones
are rebranded. Children are
expelled for saying the S-word
and encouraged to report parents
for using it. You don’t need a
qualification to be a doctor.
Best friends since adolescence,
Pearson and Emory find
themselves on opposing sides
of this new culture war. Radio
personality Emory – who has built
her career riding the tide of popular
thought – makes increasingly hardline
statements while, for her part,
Pearson believes the whole thing is
ludicrous.
As their friendship fractures,
Pearson’s determination to cling
onto the ‘old, bigoted way of
thinking’ begins to endanger her
job, her safety and even her family.
Lionel Shriver turns her piercing
gaze on the policing of opinion
and intellect, and imagines a world
in which intellectual meritocracy
is heresy. Hilarious, deadpan,
scathing and at times frighteningly
plausible, MANIA will delight
the many fans of her fiction and
journalism alike.
Not all our furniture is antique,
but by the time I’ve
paid for it, it will be.
I’ve got an extremely
comprehensive health
insurance policy. For
instance, if I should ever come
down with yellow fever, they’ll
repaint my bedroom so I don’t
clash with the walls.
My dad’s motto is ‘neither a borrower nor a lender be’, which is why he lost his job at the British Library.

News From the Friends
of St Peter’s
ST PETER’S CHURCH,
Thornton is a medieval,
Grade I listed building
admired by all who visit.
However, because of
this grand lady’s age she
does need considerable
care and repair. In
1995 two ladies, having
embarked on major
cleaning tasks decided
help was needed and
the Friends of St Peter’s
(FOSP) fund raising
group was born.
Over the years this group has
held many events including
Open Gardens, Quiz Nights,
Craft Fayres, Christmas Tree
Festivals, Clear Out Sales, Quiz
Nights and so on.
These events have been enjoyed by many and have raised much needed
funds and I am sure that Thornton villagers are very appreciative of all the
trustees have done over the years.
The FOSP continues to raise money for the needs of this ancient
building. However, we really need people to step forward and join the
FOSP committee. Currently there are just 7 of us trustees. The group
meets around every couple of months usually when there is a need,
plans fundraising events, and agrees how the raised money should be
spent in conjunction with the church council. Meetings are friendly, happy
occasions. (One member said he laughed more at our meetings than at any
other.) You do not have to be a church goer to join the team. If you are
even a little bit interested in joining the team, please do contact us.
If you are unable to join the committee, but would like to support and help
our lovely building, please do contact us.
Our Annual General meeting is on 17th April, 7 pm at St Peter’s Church,
Thornton. Everyone is welcome. Just come along and see what we do.
Our next event is St Georges Day celebration at the Bricklayers Arms,
Thornton Tuesday 23rd April 7.30 pm. Tickets £12 include Last night
of the Proms style celebration and homemade pies. Contact Eric on
078540709904 for tickets. This is preceded by a bell ringing demonstration
at St Peter’s church from 6.45 until 7.15 pm.
By popular demand we are holding another Clear Out Sale on 4th May,
10 am to 1 pm at Thornton Community Centre, Thornton, LE67 1AH. If you
would like to reserve a table, £10, please contact me, details below.
Leicestershire Police and Crime
Commissioner Election
Polling Day Thursday 2 May 2024
Crime is Down
4.4% across
Leicestershire
Vote to Re-Elect
Rupert
MaTThEws
My Ten Point Plan for a safer Markfield, Bagworth & area
1 - Improve neighbourhood policing.
I will open more police offices to the public and
keep more beat officers on the beat.
2 - Tackle burglary
Burglary is down 6.8%. I will continue to deploy
anti-burglary patrols and prevention advice.
3 - More high profile visible policing
I will ensure all villages & estates are regularly
visited by police officers.
4 - Target anti-social Behaviour
ASB is down 11.5%. Neighbourhood Watch
groups and Parish Councils will get the training
and resources they need to tackle ASB.
5 - Maintain Order on our streets
We need to see robust policing of violent or
intimidatory protests and demonstrations.
6 - Combat knife and violent crime
Serious violent crime is down 12.1%. I will support
the expansion of stop & search.
On 2 May
Vote to
Re-Elect
7 - Fight the growth of drug crime
Drug crime drives violent crime, theft and
burglaries. I will continue to support our
undercover teams.
8 - Boost policing in rural areas
Rural Crime is down 10.2%. I will enhance the
Rural Policing Team with drones and other
equipment to help them tackle rural crime.
9 - Tackle speeding and Road safety
I will crack down on e-scooters and road racing
and extend the use of the new-style “speed vans”.
10 - Restore public trust in policing Bad
behaviour by officers will not be tolerated.
THE HERALD • MID-APRIL 2024 • Tel: 01530 244069 • Email: info@markfieldherald.co.uk
Make sure you have
Voter ID at the upcoming
elections
ALL VOTERS will need to show an
accepted form of photo ID at the polls
taking place on 2 May 2024.
In April 2022, the Government passed the Elections
Act 2022 which requires all voters to show ID at
polling stations. This means that if you’re planning
to vote in person, you’ll need to bring an accepted
form of photo ID with you. If you turn up at the polling station without any
accepted ID or a Voter Authority Certificate, you won’t be allowed to vote.
Most voters will already have an accepted form of photo ID that they can
use, but it’s important that you double check the list of eligible forms of ID
in advance to make sure that you don’t miss out on your chance to vote.
All accepted forms of ID must include your photo and be suitably secure,
such as a passport, driving license or blue badge. If you have an accepted
form of ID but the date has expired, you’ll still be able to use it if the photo
is still a good likeness.
Don’t have anything which is on the list of eligible ID? Don’t worry, you
can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate. This is a temporary form of ID
issued by the local authority which will allow you to vote.
It’s free to and easy to apply either on the Government website by 5pm
on Wednesday 24 April. You should only apply if you don’t already have an
accepted form of ID.
No photo ID needed for a postal vote
If you would prefer not to show ID at a polling station, you can apply
online to vote by post or proxy. Photo ID isn’t required to apply or vote in
these ways, although your proxy will be required to show their own ID at
the polling station.
The deadline for applying for a postal vote is 5pm Wednesday 17
April 2024, and the deadline to apply for a proxy to vote on your
Still have questions? There’s lots of information on the Electoral
Commission website.
Take a look at Sora
- and be amazed!
SORA is an
AI (Artificial
Intelligence)
application
that can create
realistic and
imaginative
scenes from text
instructions.
The text instructions
for the video on the
right were: A stylish
woman walks down
a Tokyo street filled
with warm glowing
neon and animated city signage. She wears a black leather jacket, a long
red dress, and black boots, and carries a black purse. She wears sunglasses
and red lipstick. She walks confidently and casually. The street is damp and
reflective, creating a mirror effect of the colorful lights. Many pedestrians
walk about.
To see more amazing examples of what Sora is capable of, visit the
website at https://openai.com/sora
The videos include: historical footage of California during the gold rush,
a tour of an art gallery with many beautiful works of art in different styles,
a white vintage SUV with a black roof rack as it speeds up a dirt road
surrounded by pine trees on a steep mountain slope, several giant woolly
mammoths approach treading through a snowy meadow, and a closeup
video of two pirate ships battling each other as they sail inside a cup of
coffee. It seems that if you imagine ANYTHING, and describe it in text,
then Sora will create a video scene of it. Whatever next?
Help to sow seeds of
friendship this spring
A LOCAL FRIENDSHIP group
says it will do all it can to help
bring people seeking company
together this spring.
Leicester Oddfellows, a group of over 800 mostly older and retired members
who meet up regularly to enjoy events and activities in and around
Leicestershire, is extending a welcome to anyone interested in getting to
know new people locally.
“There are lots of obstacles that can get in the way of making friends,
particularly as we get older,” said Mike Harris, Branch Secretary at Leicester
Oddfellows. “Not knowing how to start or where to look is often the first and
most difficult hurdle, so we want people to know that we’re here and will help
to remove as many barriers as possible.
“We have a variety of events for you to try and a whole host of people to
enjoy doing them alongside. There really is something for everyone.”
Leicester Oddfellows’ upcoming social activities include monthly subsidised
fish and chip lunches, a day trip out on the Great Central Railway and
another one to Sunnyside Garden Centre followed by a guided tour of
Donington Le Heath Manor, as well as a weekly games morning.
Mike added: “We keep the prices of our events to a minimum in order to
make them as accessible and affordable as possible.”
The Society also runs around 60 online events every month which are free
and open to all.
Leicester Oddfellows is part of one of the UK’s oldest and largest friendly
societies. Its members can access a wide range of benefits, including care
and welfare support and a travel club, and there are also opportunities to
volunteer and play a part in fundraising initiatives.
Don’t just sit
there, whatever
you do!
THE AVERAGE adult in the
UK sits for nine hours a day.
Office workers probably
clock up even more time in
a chair.
Serves 4 Preparation time 15-20 minutes Cooking time 40 minutes
For a dish that looks so classy and
tastes so complex, it’s hard to believe
that everything happens in one pan.
Ingredients
• 200g basmati rice
• 1 tbsp butter
• 2 tbsp rapeseed oil
• 2 onions, peeled and finely sliced
• Salt and ground black pepper
• 500g golden beetroot, peeled and
cut into 1cm cubes
• 150ml white wine
• 50g cashew nuts, roughly chopped
• 2 green chillies, finely chopped
• 6cm piece fresh root ginger,
peeled and grated
• 2 cloves garlic,
peeled and finely chopped
• 2 bay leaves
• 40 curry leaves (if you can’t find
them, leave them out)
• 1 tsp cumin seeds
• 1 tsp black mustard seeds
• Pared peel of 1 unwaxed lime
• 400ml vegetable stock
To serve
• 1 small Chioggia beetroot, finely
sliced on a mandolin
• Juice of 1 lime
• 3 tbsp pomegranate seeds
• ½ small bunch of fresh
coriander, leaves and tender
stems roughly chopped
• Greek yoghurt
1. Place the basmati rice in a sieve and rinse under a
running tap, agitating the rice grains with your hands to
rinse away as much starch as possible. When the water
that runs through the sieve is no longer cloudy, tip the rice
into a bowl and cover with 2cm fresh water. Set aside.
2. Meanwhile, heat the butter and oil in a large, deep frying
pan over a medium heat. When the butter is melted and
bubbling noisily, add the onions along with a pinch of
salt and a generous grind of black pepper. Cook, stirring
regularly, until the onions are soft and well on their way
to being caramelised, about 12-15 minutes. Turn the heat
up to high, then stir in the beetroot, pour in the wine and
cover the pan with a lid. Cook, without peeking, for 8
minutes, then remove the lid and check the tenderness
of the beetroot with a sharp knife. If it still feels hard,
continue to cook for a few minutes with the lid on (adding
a splash of water if all of the wine has evaporated). Once
tender, turn the heat down to medium and stir through
the cashews, chillies, ginger, garlic, bay leaves and curry
leaves (if using). Cook for a minute until fragrant, then add
the dried spices.
3. Drain the rice, then stir it through the spiced vegetable
mixture, along with the lime peel. Pour over the vegetable
stock, cover the pan with a lid and cook for 8 minutes.
4. Meanwhile, toss the sliced Chioggia beetroot in the lime
juice in a small bowl and set aside.
5. Remove the pan from the heat and leave it with the lid on,
without peeking, for 8 minutes before serving. This will
help a crispy rice base to form.
6. Serve the rice in the pan at the table with the pomegranate
seeds and coriander sprinkled over the top. Arrange the
Chiogga beetroot slices in the middle of the rice and serve
immediately with a dollop of Greek yoghurt on the side.
But it is not good for you.
Research has found that too much
sitting increases your risk of weight
gain, Type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis,
depression, anxiety, stress, cancer,
and even early death.
“Excessive sedentary time
is associated with a plethora
of physical and mental health
complications,” says Prof Lee
Smith, an expert in physical activity
and sedentary behaviour at Anglia
Ruskin University.
And James Betts, professor
of metabolic physiology at the
University of Bath, says that sitting
too much may also lead to weaker
and less flexible muscles. “Using
your muscles and loading your
bones can definitely strengthen
them – or conversely, disuse can
rapidly make them weaker,” he
says.
The good thing is that too much
sitting can be easily dealt with.
Simply interrupt your sitting with
activity breaks. Get up and walk
around during every TV advert
break. Walk around during phone
calls. Go for a walk after dinner. Use
the stairs whenever you can.
The good news is that other
studies have found that if you
make time for even short bursts
of exercise during your day, it will
help to offset the harm of too much
sitting.
I tell women what they want to hear. Usually something like, ‘Well, I’m going to go now’.

Answers on page 22.
Microchipping dogs is already a legal requirement
and from 10 June 2024, it will also be compulsory
for cats. But that’s not the end of the legal
obligations associated with owning a pet.
Dogs must wear a collar and tag when in
a public place, and the tag must detail the
owner’s name and address.
Dog fouling (picking up poop after your dog)
consistently ranks as the number one thing
local councils receive complaints about. If you
fail to comply, you could receive a fixed penalty
notice of up to £100, or £1,000 if prosecuted.
Dog barking can be classed as a ‘statutory
nuisance’. Your local authority’s environmental
health department can formally ask you to stop
your dog from continuing the behaviour, and if
you don’t, they can take your dog away from
you. Prolonged periods of barking can also be
stressful for your dog and impact its well-being.
Animal Welfare Act 2006: among other
rulings, the act emphasises the need for
owners to supply a suitable place for their
pets to live and exhibit normal behaviour. It
also states that pets must be protected from
pain, suffering, injury and disease, and that a
suitable diet must be provided.
Unlike dogs, cats have a right to roam, but if
they are hit by a car the driver will not be liable
under the Criminal Damage Act for any injury
or death, unless there’s clear negligence.
Update on refuse collection services
Weekly
food waste
collection by
March 2026
FOOD WASTE collection must be introduced weekly for all
households by 31st March 2026.
Last year the Borough Council sought guidance on options for food
waste collections, to compare different collection systems to maximise
the recycling rate, to assess the carbon impacts, and to clarify the
number of collection vehicles required. The equipment required for this
collection is likely to be a large container with a lockable top for outside
and a small caddy for indoors.
BROWN BINS AND FLY TIPPING: The cost of a garden waste
recycling brown bin will be increased to £42.50 for 2024/25, but even
at that price the service is still receiving a subsidy of around £250,000.
Participation in the garden waste service remains high with more than
31,000 subscriptions annually.
The service is very competitively priced when compared to most
other local authorities, and this gives residents an economic alternative
to the temptation to fly tip their garden waste. Nevertheless, fly
tipping of all sorts of waste increased by 8% to 592 between April and
December 2023 when compared with the same period in 2022.
RECYCLING OVERALL: The recycling rate in the borough dropped
by 1.5% to 41.2% last year, slightly more than the drop in recycling
performance across the whole of England of 0.7%. The national rate
for England is 43.4%. The drop locally is mainly attributable to dry
recycling rates returning to pre pandemic levels and warmer weather
meaning less compostable waste is produced. The UK government
target is 50% by 2020, and 65% by 2035.
Demand for large item collections continues to be popular with 4739
items picked up during the period April – December 2023.
The “Big Bin” collection service introduced in November 2023
has been very well received. It helps those who don’t have enough
rubbish for a skip or enough space for one, or don’t have a car to take
rubbish to the tip. 107 bins had been booked in the first few months,
enabling residents to dispose of a large amount of household rubbish
responsibly at low cost.
Overall, the waste collection changes the council will need to deliver
in the next 2- 3 years are thought to be the most comprehensive seen
in the last 20 years.
WHAT A BUSY
time we had at
our children’s
craft afternoon
– entitled
“Eggsciting
Easter!”
We made Easter
gardens, palm
branches, crowns,
cards, stained-glass
windows, book
marks and story
wheels. Each of the
crafts was relevant
to a significant event
in Holy Week. Also,
to remind us of
springtime and the
promise of new life,
we made chocolate
nests complete with
eggs and a chick,
and were treated to
one of Iris’s famous
knitted chickens
containing a cream
egg.
Following the
“making” session
we had a short
act of praise when
everyone joined
together in singing
songs and waving
our palm branches,
as well as watching The Bible Society’s film “The Super-cool Story
of Jesus”. Then, to conclude the afternoon, both children and adults
continued to enjoy each other’s company as we shared tea-time treats,
drinks and hot cross buns. We trust that an “eggsciting” time was had by
all!
(N.B. “Eggsciting Easter!” was the second of our craft afternoons - the
first being “Crafty Christmas”. We are intending to arrange more in the
future.)
“Ladies and gentlemen. A fifty pound note has been found in
the theatre. Will the person who lost it please form a queue
at the stage door.”
My brother is a complete pessimist. He carries a card in his
wallet that reads: ‘In the event of an accident - I’m not surprised.’
I love lying back, relaxing in the bath. Sometimes I even put water in.
Hello everyone,
I HOPE THAT you are enjoying the lighter evenings now that
the clocks have ‘sprung forward’ – I certainly am!
A brief update this month on a range of casework that I have been working on
across the Markfield, Stanton, Bagworth & Thornton Area:
Highways Issues
I HAVE BEEN working on several cases in Markfield village
relating to the re-lining of the parking bays on Main Street, a
replacement bin on Chitterman Way, several housing queries
(that I have passed across to Cllr Harris – as the HBBC ward
rep), as well as concerns about the standard of resurfacing of
roads such as Ratby Lane.
I continue to work with the Highways Department on these issues and will
update residents in due course.
Network North
LAST YEAR the government announced the cancellation of
HS2 north of Birmingham and the reallocation of funds to the
Midlands and the North under the umbrella of the Network
North plan.
Funding awarded as part of the Network North plan should be additional to
existing resources to ensure that the benefits are realised within the North and
Midlands regions.
Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP+) and Network
North Public Transport funding:
The BSIP+ is a revenue-based grant funding that consists
of two tranches of £1.79 million - the first was received in
October 2023 and the second is due to be received in July
2024.
The Network North Public Transport is a funding of £4.05 million, due to be
received in July 2024.
This means a total of £7.63 million is available over 2023/24 and 2024/25
financial years.
The focus of this funding is to improve passenger transport by delivering the
best overall outcomes in growing long-term patronage, revenues, and therefore
maintaining bus service levels and providing essential social and economic
connectivity for local communities.
A further four-year capital and revenue funding announcement for the period
from 2025/26 onwards is anticipated in the near future, which could provide an
opportunity to carry out improvement schemes that may not be covered in the
current BSIP+ and Network North Public Transport funding.
Road Resurfacing Fund
UNDER THE Network North plan, the council has received
an additional £2.258 million of funding in 2023/24 from the
Road Resurfacing Fund for local highways maintenance,
particularly for the resurfacing of carriageways, cycleways,
and footways to prevent potholes and other road defects from
occurring. The council will receive the same level of additional
funding in 2024/25.
The Department for Transport has announced that the total minimum additional
funding that the council will receive over the 11 years from 2023/24 to 2033/34
will be £131 million. The amount of money in each of the future years has yet to
be announced, although is likely to be backloaded, meaning larger allocations
will be provided later in the funding period.
Bardon Hill Community Fund
AS CHAIRMAN of the Bardon Hill Community Fund, I am really
keen that grants are allocated to worthy community groups
within the Markfield, Stanton, Bagworth & Thornton Area.
Over recent months the fund has received a significant number of applicants
from Coalville; and whilst this is welcomed, I would very much want more of this
limited resource allocated to ‘good causes’ in our area.
As such if you know any groups who are in need to financial support for
community-based projects/initiatives please let me know and I will be able to
steer you in the right direction with Bardon Hill Quarry!
If you have any issues that I can be of assistance with please do not hesitate to
get in touch,
Best Wishes,
Good dog!
RECENT scientific research
has found evidence that
having a dog is good for
you.
“Science is finally catching up
with what humans have intuitively
known for thousands of years.” So
says Professor Emeritus Aubrey
Fine of Cal Poly University, a
paediatric clinical psychologist.
A recent study at Konkuk
University in Korea found that
participants’ alpha-band brain
waves increased while playing
and walking with dogs, while their
beta-band brain waves increased
while grooming, massaging, or
playing with dogs. All participants
were left feeling “less fatigued,
depressed and stressed”.
In one American academic
journal, Circulation:
Cardiovascular Quality and
Outcomes, a study found that,
overall, dog owners have a 24
per cent decreased risk of allcause
mortality, and that that
percentage rises to 31 per cent for
cardiovascular-related issues.
According to Tommy Wood,
assistant professor of paediatrics
and neuroscience at the
University of Washington School
of Medicine, dogs “support our
health and wellbeing in many
ways.”
My wife said I’m an idiot who can’t do the simplest of things right. So I packed her bags and left.

Pause for Thought
THE EASTER SEASON can mean lots of different things to
many people, as we are surrounded by symbols like the
Easter bunny, chocolate eggs, hot cross buns, Easter chicks
and maybe even the Christian Cross.
This time of year is usually when we transition from the cold and wet
of winter as there are signs of spring around us. We may find ourselves
becoming a bit more hopeful for sunny warm days and perhaps even a
summer holiday. Even the word Easter conjures images of new life and
hope for something else, rather than the dreariness of winter, as it is
thought to have come from the name of an Anglo Saxon God worshipped in
the 8th century called Eostre, who was the Goddess of spring or fertility.
Hope is a key element of the Christian faith as without hope we find it very
hard to exercise any sort of faith at
all. The bible tells us that ‘Faith is
the confidence in what we hope for
and assurance of what we do not
see’. In essence, it helps us have
certainty of good things to come and
it has even been proven to help our
overall health and wellbeing. If we
are going through hard times, it can
be challenging to navigate our way
without hope as it is what keeps us
going, believing and trusting that
better days are ahead. No matter
what faith you associate with, or
even if you do not have a faith in
any God at all, hope is an essential
element of being human. It helps us
stay motivated, keep believing the
best of ourselves, and each other.
Circumstances are always subject to
change but hope is up to us. Stay Hopeful, you’ll be glad you did!
The taxman was surprised to receive a letter which read:
‘Dear Sir, Last year I cheated on my tax and I can’t sleep for thinking
about it. I am therefore enclosing a cheque for £2,000. If I find that I
still can’t sleep, I’ll send you the balance.’
at Markfield
on 23rd and 24th
March.
A steady stream of
visitors watched artists
demonstrating different
techniques and mediums
and were encouraged to
participate themselves.
The professional
organisation and warm
welcome provided by
the event’s success. The ME sports cafe provided ‘refreshments with a smile’ encouraging people to sit and chat
surrounded by the exhibits.
A significant number of paintings and cards were sold and a number of complimentary comments were written in
the visitors book.
The Art group would like to take this opportunity to thank all involved, particularly those who helped out behind the
scenes, and prior to the event with advertising. We are of course grateful to all those who travelled from near and
far to view our work.
Bosworth Medieval Festival returns this August
THE HUGELY popular Bosworth Medieval
Festival will be making a welcome return
this August.
The two-day event – which attracts thousands of
visitors, re-enactors and traders from across the UK
and beyond – will take place on Saturday 17 and
Sunday 18 August this year, at the Bosworth Battlefield
Heritage Centre.
The event will feature battle re-enactments by The
Wars of the Roses Federation – including the Battle
of Bosworth as the finale on both days – living history
encampments to explore, author talks, as well as entry
to the award-winning exhibition and free car parking.
This year’s event is set to be even more special as the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre marks its 50th
anniversary of being open to the public. The Battle of Bosworth was a pivotal moment in English history, which
saw King Richard III lose his life and his crown to Henry Tudor – bringing the Tudor dynasty to the throne. The reenactment
aims to help visitors to learn more about this crucial point in English history, as well as honouring those
who fought and died on both sides.
Tickets for the festival are now on sale. VISIT: https://www.bosworthbattlefield.org.uk/bosworth-medievalfestival-2024/
Mayflower Club
ON THE 6TH MARCH we celebrated
Saint David’s Day. We tried to do
something different this year with a
DRAGON Drive.
It was supposed to be similar to a Beetle Drive
but it rapidly degenerated into chaos and
confusion so, we ended up with a “who drew the
best and the worst dragons” award. Jane won the
award with the best dragon whilst John drew the
worst which vaguely resembled a rather poorly
Extra Terrestrial! Never mind they all received
a Welsh hand flag and sampled traditional leek
soup followed by Welsh Cakes with jam and
butter.
On the 13th March, just for a bit of fun, we held
a “Where’s there’s muck there’s brass” mock
auction. Members were shown household brass
ornaments and other metal vintage items. They
were told the story behind each item and then, a
bit like the Antiques Road Show, they had to “bid”
for them through a mock auction using monopoly
money. The auction got quite heated and frenzied
as members tried to outbid each other. It was a
good laugh and although bidders didn’t actually
win the items, they won some sweets instead.
On the same day one of our stalwart members
Alan, celebrated his 90th Birthday. Happy 90th
Birthday Alan from us all.
On the 20th March we also celebrated another
Saint’s Day, this time it was Saint Patrick. To
mark the occasion members had to complete an
Irish Limerick with varying degrees of success. I
have to say they were all funny but there were no
budding Poet Laureate amongst them. This was
followed by a hot bowl of traditional Irish Stew
which went down well on a rather cold and windy
day.
HERE ARE some of the events we have
in place for the coming weeks:
On the 27th March we held our annual Easter
event. To make life easier, instead of hiding the
Easter chocolates members drew them out of
a bag. Our Easter bonnet parade was a bit low
on numbers this year so, a reluctant Peter was
dragged into the parade simply because he was
wearing a cap but adorned with a vase of spring
flowers he looked the part. Together with Peter,
Barbara and Eleanor won the coveted prize of an
Easter chocolate bunny.
ON 16TH MARCH several of our members attended the
local Federation Annual Council Meeting held at Leicester
Grammar School.
We always enjoy this chance to meet up with members of other local WIs
as well as the opportunity for retail therapy with the various stallholders
present. We had three speakers including Mrs Henrietta Chubb JP who
informed and entertained us with the history of, and her role as, High
Sheriff of Leicestershire.
The main speaker of the day was columnist and writer Polly Toynbee
whose engrossing talk left us with much to think about.
As well as the business of the day and the shopping opportunities
there were displays of the entries for the various competitions run by the
Federation. We would like to congratulate our member Lynn Mellor on
her 3rd place in the category ‘a piece of jewellery inspired by water’; (we
think she should have won).
• AT OUR MEETING on 20 March, Rev Dr. Rob Hunter came to talk
to us about the role of Coroner. Rob is a Retired/Honorary Member of the
Coroners’ Society of England and Wales.
A Coroner is an independent officer whose role is to investigate where a
death is suspected to be violent or unnatural, where the cause of death is
unknown or the deceased died in state detention. The Coroner may decide
to hold an Inquest which differs from a Court hearing in that interested
parties can attend and have the opportunity to ask relevant questions of
the witnesses. As well as the serious side of the role Rob also lightened
his talk with a few anecdotes of his experiences. Rob is an excellent
speaker and his talk was very much enjoyed
• AT OUR APRIL MEETING Baroness Bolsover will be talking to us on
the subject of Afternoon Tea and we will be taking notes ahead of our
own afternoon tea to be held in June. The competition will be a decorative
teaspoon.
Fewer babies
coming
FOR THE FIRST time since
the Black Death killed
about 50 million people in
the mid-1300s, the world’s
population is going to
decline.
According to experts, global fertility
rates have hit an historic tipping
point, and seem unlikely to recover.
Millions of women are simply having
less children.
The global population currently
stands at just over eight billion. But
in the coming decades, as the older
people die and fewer babies are
born, this figure will fall.
Women need to have an
average of 2.1 children each, for
the population growth to remain
static. Worldwide, in 1950 it was
at 4.84. By 2021 it was at 2.23. It
is predicted to fall to 1.83 by 2050.
The UK, like other high-income
countries, has a lower-than-average
fertility rate, at just 1.49 in 2021. It is
expected to fall to 1.38 by 2050.
This will mean that our population
of about 67 million will become
increasingly old. And this will have
a huge impact on our national
finances, as the old will put pressure
on the health services, while there
will be fewer young people in work,
keeping the economy going.
Message from Dr Luke Evans MP
OUR AREA has so much
to offer, not only is
Leicestershire one
of the most picturesque
counties with miles of
rolling hills (great for
long walks with dogs!),
but we’re brimming with
economic and strategic
potential, and businesses
from all around the world
have recognised this with
many choosing to grow
their business from right
here in Hinckley and
Bosworth.
For example, did you know the
world’s leading manufacturer
of construction equipment,
Caterpillar, has a site in Desford
where they employ over 1,800
local people in high value,
cutting edge jobs? For 70 years
since they opened in Desford,
Caterpillar have researched, built
and tested advanced building
equipment of everything from
backhoe loaders to electric
diggers, which are then exported
all around the world. This was
the company’s first site outside of
the USA and they’ve grown from
strength to strength since!
It was a real pleasure to
welcome the Minister of State for
Business and Trade to Caterpillar
recently to highlight some of the
development and manufacturing
happening right here and talk
about what it means for jobs and
investment in our community.
It is thanks to the team of 1,800+
people at Caterpillar and other
businesses in our area leading
the way on innovation and
sustainability, that we recently
found out Hinckley and Bosworth
is the fourth biggest net zero
economy in England and Wales!
This is tremendous news for
local people, as jobs in the sector
– which makes up more than
12% of Hinckley and Bosworth’s
economy, representing a value of
£258 million – have an average
wage of £44,600, compared to
the national average of £35,400.
Enjoy this issue?
Please pass it on to a friend or
relative when you’ve finished
with it. Thanks!
(L-R) Rob Walker, UK Operations Manager at Caterpillar,
Business and Trade Minister Nusrat Ghani, Dr Luke
Evans MP and Denise Peet, Head of Government Affairs
at Caterpillar UK.
And I know many of you
will be pleased to read that
opportunities at some of
these growing businesses are
open to apprentices. Since
2010 more than 11,000 new
apprenticeships and traineeships
have been created in Hinckley
and Bosworth, opening the door
for people to learn valuable
skills while gaining knowledge
of the workplace. I’ve really
enjoyed speaking to apprentices
across our area about what the
experience means to them and
the benefits of gaining important
qualifications for the future while
you work.
You may have seen some
of the news over the past few
months relating to the National
Insurance Cuts from 12pc down
to 8pc. Not only is this a tax cut
for workers (who will keep, on
average, around £900 more of
what they earn each year) but
will benefit our small and medium
businesses too, with business
taxes being permanently cut by
£11bn per year.
As ever, you can find out more
